Exclusive: Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 luscious pop classic movie starring Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent, has recouped its costs — not only the $28 million Broadway price tag, but it also recouped sizable sums in London’s West End and Australia.
Luhrmann tells me that it’s “so gratifying that breaking even is such a big deal in the theater.”
As an antipodean, he’s especially gratified with Moulin Rouge!’s hit status in Australia.
“Australia, the English one, the Broadway one — they’ve all done it,” and “that’s down to the relentless drive that Carmen and her team in Australia, New York and London had to fulfill the dictum that the show must go on,” he says with brio in referring to Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Sydney-based Global Creatures, the principal production company behind Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
“Check with Carmen,” Luhrmann suggests.

More than 20 Broadway producers have pledged $1 million in matching funds for the Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Fund of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The producers will match every new donation made by the public up to the million-dollar mark.
With the pledge, fund organizers have set a $2 million goal by April 12.
The emergency assistance fund, administered by The Actors Fund, is designed to help onstage, backstage and behind the scenes workers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and work shutdown. Broadway theaters have been dark since March 12, with plans to reopen – for now, anyway – on April 13 (an extension beyond that opening date is likely).
The matching fund challenge was initiated by Spencer Ross with a $50,000 pledge.

Now that Spider-Man: The Musical has official shut down and shit the bed, the Big Apple has a monster-sized hole in it just waiting to be filled. Enter King Kong. Holy cow, that sounded inadvertently dirty.
The sky-high $75 million cost of Spider-Man was incurred in large part by a long, haphazard development process for a show that opened cold on Broadway, with all those expenses folded into the New York production’s budget.
By contrast, King Kong has already been developed in a Melbourne, Australia, production (said to have come in at around $30 million), so the capitalization of the American staging, while still poised to be high by Broadway standards, won’t be weighed down with those expenses. And since the heavy lifting required to mount Kong has already been accomplished once, there’s zero likelihood that previews will stretch over months as they did with Spider-Man.
Incidentally, "mounting Kong" sounded even more inadvertently dirty.

This $20m film is based on Latif Yahia's claim to have been a body double for Uday Hussein. But his story doesn't add up
This weekend sees the UK release of The Devil's Double, a $20m action blockbuster set in the "lawless playground of excess and violence known as Baghdad, 1987". The film is purportedly based on the true story of Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper), an Iraqi army captain forced to work as a body double for the eldest son of Saddam Hussein, Uday.
But in all the hype surrounding its release, one important point is in danger of being lost: the story depicted in this film almost certainly never happened.
On the surface, Latif Yahia's is a compelling tale. While on active service during the Iran-Iraq war, he was summoned to Baghdad to serve as Uday's "fidi" (or body double). When he refused, he was tortured and forced to undergo cosmetic surgery,...

A 28-year-old woman who tracked down her long-lost father last year has revealed that she is pregnant with his baby. Penny Lawrence went in search of her father Gerry Ryan following the death of her mother and grandparents. The Irish Sun reports that she eventually found Dublin-born Ryan in Houston, Texas. After meeting, the pair embarked on a sexual relationship which resulted in Lawrence becoming pregnant. However, they have insisted that their attraction is the result of Genetic Sexual Attraction, a term previously created by Barbara Gonyo to describe the feelings between parents and their children - as well as siblings - who meet as adults. "We are not committing incest, but are victims of Gsa," Lawrence told the paper. "We've never experienced a father-daughter relationship, (more)...

Louis Walsh has admitted that Irish viewers failed to support John & Edward in the early weeks of The X Factor. The boyband manager told The Gerry Ryan Show that he was disappointed when the Dublin-born brothers did not receive the backing of their homeland after making their debut on the show. RTÉ has released information on the earnings of its ten most highly paid broadcasters. In 2007 and 2008, Pat Kenny tops the list of earners with a salary of €922,949 and €950,976 respectively for each year. Gerry Ryan, Marian Finucane, Ryan Tubridy and Joe Duffy round out the top five in 2008. In previous years the national broadcaster released the salary information, on a voluntary basis, that were two years in arrears. However, the figures for both 2007 and 2008 have been released at this time. A statement said: "The broader spread of information is being released in recognition of public interest that, at time of economic difficulty and pressure on costs, RTÉ should be managing these costs downward just as it is taking a strong lead in the commercial state sector in reducing other costs...
