Friday Night Dinner knows the truth about families. Not that they bicker, mock and childishly compete – sitcom’s known about that since Steptoe & Son. No, Friday Night Dinner knows that families aren’t made up of people; they’re made up of odd habits.
Did you ever invite a friend home from school and pray that none of your family’s Weird Stuff would leak out into the playground the next day? That your mum’s special word for a fart wouldn’t follow you down the corridor into Maths, and the dinner hall wouldn’t echo with the high-pitched voice in which you all talk to the dog? Perhaps you hoped against hope that your brother wouldn’t be wearing his comedy Viz Buster Gonad t-shirt, that no-one would see the wooden clothes peg holding open the choke on your dad’s car, and that nobody would call...

Operation Mincemeat was an aptly absurd code name for what was, on the face of it, a preposterous British military mission: In 1943, with Allied forces planning to invade Sicily and wrest it from fascist Axis control, two intelligence officers conspired to convince the Nazis they were targeting Greece instead, pulling off the ruse with false documents and the stolen, dressed-up corpse of a fictitious British marine. It’s a true chapter of history that nonetheless sounds like a war film as dreamed up by Ealing Studios scriptwriters; it’s practically begging to be made into a farce, and sure enough, the gag-filled knockabout musical “Operation Mincemeat” hits London stages this very month. As coincidence would have it, the screen version of the same story arrives in U.K. cinemas near-simultaneously, though any similarities end there: stately and stiff-lipped, John Madden’s handsome film approaches its tall tale with a very British sense of decorum.

Kenton Allen, CEO of London-based outfit Big Talk Productions, has plenty to be pleased about. For the next two weeks, the company he has headed for over a decade will be dominating the Monday night primetime slot on BBC One in the U.K. First, at 8:30 p.m., with “The Goes Wrong Show,” and then at 9 p.m. with “The Outlaws,” about a group of small-time convicts completing community service together and which stars Christopher Walken in his first British television role.
“That doesn’t happen every day,” Allen tells Variety. “That’s quite a big thing for us to have an hour and a half of primetime on the nation’s biggest Psb.”
Allen is ostensibly here to talk about “The Outlaws,” which is written by and stars Stephen Merchant (“Jojo Rabbit”) alongside Walken and “Poldark’s” Eleanor Tomlinson, but in a wide-ranging conversation is happy to discuss everything from the U.

Friday Night Dinner is ten.
That’s ten years of crimble-crumble, humble bumbling, manic misunderstandings, and more lovely bits of squirrel than you could shake a dead fox at. For thirty-seven Friday nights across six glorious seasons the Goodman family – shirtless dad, Martin (Paul Ritter); long-suffering but ever hopeful mum, Jackie (Tamsin Greig), and their visiting prank-wanker sons Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) – served up a banquet of laughs to a hungry nation, ably assisted by chronically persistent, reality-adjacent next-door-neighbour, Jim (Mark Heap) and his faithful dog, Wilson, and a host of other regulars and monstrously memorable one-offs besides.
In celebration, then, of one of the most smartly-observed, perfectly-cast comedies of recent years, in chronological order, we count down ten of the show’s best.

Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe” is poised to go big at the BAFTA Television and Craft awards.
The Amazon and BBC anthology series leads the field this year with 15 nominations, narrowly topping the largest totals from the last couple of editions, and has the likes of John Boyega and Letitia Wright installed among the favorites in the lead acting categories. However, it will likely face stiff competition across the board from “The Crown” and “I May Destroy You,” the second and third most-nominated series respectively, come the ceremony on June 6.
Michaela Coel’s lauded HBO drama will go head-to-head with “Small Axe” in a mouth-watering mini-series category, which also includes “Normal People” and Channel 4’s darkly brilliant four-parter “Adult Material.” It’s relatively safe to assume the race will be of the two-horse variety, given that “Adult Material” hasn’t garnered as much fanfare as its rivals, and that...

BAFTA pulled the curtain back on nominations for its TV and TV Craft Awards on Wednesday ahead of ceremonies that take place on June 6 and May 24 respectively. As always with award nominations, the list of those recognized had tongues wagging. Let’s walk through some of the biggest themes.
The snubs
There were some eyebrow-raising absentees among the nominations this year. Netflix’s The Crown scored a decent haul of 10 nominations, but none of them were for Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson, and Emma Corrin, who played Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, and Princess Diana respectively. The snubs were all the more notable given that all three were Golden Globe-nominated, while Anderson and Corrin were victorious at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association prizes. Other surprises included the absence of David Tennant for his role as serial killer Dennis Nilsen in ITV series Des, while critics also felt that series including ITV...

It’s never easy losing someone that has meant a lot to many people, and Paul Ritter, born as Simon Paul Adams, is no less of a loss to quite a few fans and costars that enjoyed his career over the course of the last couple of decades. While some folks might not know that much about him, the man’s career is easy enough to look up and be impressed by since he managed to become a common face among many different movies and TV shows. One thing that any actor might want to happen when it comes to their career

Until last year’s turn of events I’d never really binged on box-sets, but after being forced to modify my lifestyle somewhat, that’s exactly what happened. One of the first I tuned into was Friday Night Dinner, and one of the standouts was Paul Ritter.
For me, at the time, it was a case of ‘Paul who?’, which is a shame as the sad passing of this highly-rated actor came all too soon after he got the recognition he deserved, belying his towering talent.
One good reason for this was that Ritter carved himself a memorable stage career. Tony and Olivier nominations – for Coram Boy and The Norman Conquests respectively – were the crowning glory. Fresh out of university, he headed for Germany and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, a theatre in Hamburg, and it was here where he built upon his am-dram days in A-Level Theatre Studies.

Exclusive: Netflix has struck a big deal for the Colin Firth World War II movie Operation Mincemeat, we can reveal.
The streamer has pre-bought North America and Latin America rights for around $15 million from The King’s Speech producer See-Saw and Cohen Media Group after seeing footage in recent days.
Shakespeare In Love and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel filmmaker John Madden directed the movie, which stars Oscar winner Firth alongside Succession star Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Penelope Wilton, Jason Isaacs, Johnny Flynn, Simon Russell Beale, Hattie Morahan, Mark Gatiss and Paul Ritter.
It has been 10 years since See-Saw and Firth teamed on multi-Oscar-winner The King’s Speech, and we hear this could be another potential awards pic. Set in 1943 when the Allies were determined to break Hitler’s grip on occupied Europe, the remarkable true story follows intelligence officers Ewen Montagu (Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Macfadyen) who conjure an inspired and...

A mixed bag, all told.
One thing you can largely rely on in worrying times is television, and below are the top returning British shows that fought their way through the Covid-19 lockdown to come back in 2020.

Yes, we are inundated with streaming options.
Instead of the promise of all of our content being easier to navigate, not to mention less expensive, there is more to keep track of than ever before.
NBCUniversal's Peacock arrives to the public on Wednesday, July 15. Free for all with ads, to watch their originals, you'll need one of their premium plans. One has ads, and the other is ad-free.
We know services are always worth the additional cost for the ad-free versions. After all, with all the content available, time is essential.
But is one of the premium tiers worth the extra money?
Upon launch, there will be four scripted originals for adults.
They include Peacock's flagship show, Brave New World, based on the novel by Aldus Huxley, The Capture, a conspiracy thriller from the UK, Intelligence, a comedy from Nick Mohammed starring David Schwimmer, and Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing production on many scripted and un-scripted series to shutter, there were plenty wondering precisely how many original feathers NBCU’s Peacock would be able to launch with, especially after chairman Matt Strauss said the bulk of the streaming service’s originals slate had been pushed to 2021.
The service has now answered that question, announcing which originals will be available upon its July 15 launch. Headlining the list is the series adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” which is set to star “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Hail, Caesar!” vet Alden Ehrenreich, “Downton Abbey” alum Jessica Brown Findlay, and Harry Lloyd.
In addition, subscribers to the new service will be able to watch the first seasons of international thriller “The Capture,” David Schwimmer comedy “Intelligence,” sports documentary “In Deep with Ryan Lochte,” and the feature “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home” when the streamer launches.

Tamsin Greig stars in the new Epix limited series “Belgravia” from Emmy winner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”). He adapted his 2016 best-selling novel about the rise of the Trenchard family in London society in the 1840s and the secret that could be their undoing. As Greig explains in our interview (watch the exclusive video above), she is at the center of the action as Anne Trenchard, a mother still mourning her daughter who died giving birth a quarter-century earlier.
Greig is best known to American audiences for the showbiz satire “Episodes,” in which she played a beleaguered British writer at sea in Hollywood. In her native England, she is regarded as a triple threat, equally adept at drama, comedy and the classics. She won an Olivier (the British equivalent of the Tony) in 2007 for her performance in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of “Much Ado About Nothing.” And she has...

Epix released the official trailer for its upcoming series, Belgravia.
Belgravia will premiere in 2020 and cover the secrets and scandals among the upper echelon of London society in the 19th Century (That's the 1800s for those of you who failed history).
The limited series will focus on the Trenchard family after they accept an invitation to a legendary ball hosted by the Duchess of Richmond.
This ball occurs on the fateful night of the Battle of Waterloo and sets in motion a series of events that will have consequences for decades to come as secrets unravel behind the porticoed doors of London’s grandest neighborhoods.

If you liked “Downton Abbey,” then has Epix got the show for you! Because limited series “Belgravia” looks and sounds Exactly like “Downton” — the trailer even reveals an almost identical piano theme.
Here’s the thing though: “Belgravia” is a Julian Fellowes adaptation of a Julian Fellowes novel of the same name, and Fellowes, Gareth Neame, Nigel Marchant, and Liz Trubridge are the executive producers. In other words, it can’t be a “Downton” ripoff if it’s by the folks behind “Downton.”
(And yes, we checked with Epix: This lookalike — and soundalike — show has nothing to do with “Downton” other than the producing team. It’s not a spinoff or companion series.)

When hair, makeup and prosthetics designer Daniel Parker was approached for HBO’s Chernobyl, he wasn’t “terribly keen” about taking the series on, if he’s being honest. “Because one immediately thinks of zombies,” Parker explains, “and what they’re going to actually do with the subject.”

Author George R.R. Martin, whose series of epic fantasy novels "A Song of Ice and Fire" was adapted into "Game of Thrones", is moved by "Chernobyl".
"Binge-watched HBO's 'Chernobyl'. Terrifying, exciting, heartbreaking. If this one does not win a truckload of Emmys, there is no justice in Hollywood. And a special shout out to the talented Jared Harris for his amazing performance," Martin posted on Twitter.
"Chernobyl" dramatises the story of the 1986 nuclear accident, one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history, and the cleanup efforts that followed.
Apart from Harris, it has Stellan Skarsg?rd, Emily Watson and Paul Ritter leading the cast.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Chernobyl” Episode 5, “Vichnaya Pamyat.”]
Even though it’s a documented event in world history, there’s still something shocking, arriving at the end of “Chernobyl,” to see the fateful power plant explosion that set in motion the events of the series.
It’s particularly even more jarring when the series finale, “Vichnaya Pamyat” opens with a calm, serene look at life in Pripyat before the biological tumult arrived. It’s both a reminder of what was lost and an effective beginning of the end. Series creator and writer Craig Mazin and director Johan Renck wondered whether it was necessary to see the Chernobyl explosion in any other context than in the premiere, when it’s seen filtered through a living room window miles away.
“I remember Johan and I are having a discussion like ‘Should we even show this explosion in a big way at the end at all?'” Mazin told IndieWire.
Even though it’s a documented event in world history, there’s still something shocking, arriving at the end of “Chernobyl,” to see the fateful power plant explosion that set in motion the events of the series.

The word “Chernobyl” has become so synonymous with what happened in the nuclear power plant of the same name that it’s hard to imagine a series based on the 1986 disaster being called anything else.
HBO has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming five-part series based on the lead-up to and consequences of that fateful event. Filled with the kind of images that one would expect from a biography of that dangerous episode, this first look also underlines the fact that this is not going to shy away from the horror inherent in the event’s history.

The first teaser trailer is out for HBO's upcoming miniseries Chernobyl, debuting Monday, May 6 at 9/8c.
