French film and TV company Gaumont has announced it is developing a six-part drama devoted to French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife Brigitte Macron.
The Paris-based company said the film would consist of six 45-minute episodes and be entitled Brigitte, une femme libre, which translates as “Brigitte, a free woman” but is not confirmed as the international title.
“Written by Bénédicte Charles and Olivier Pouponneau, this series retraces the romantic trajectory of the first lady, Brigitte Macron,” Gaumont said in a succinct press release on Tuesday.
Charles and Pouponneau previously collaborated on the Abu Dhabi-set spy thriller Mirage and serial killer mini-series Spiral of Lies.
Gaumont did not reveal any further information on the storyline, cast or other producing partners.

France’s first lady, Brigitte Macron, will be the subject of a biopic series produced by French mini-major Gaumont.
The six-part show is being penned by Bénédicte Charles and Olivier Pouponneau, who previously teamed on the thriller series “J’ai menti.”
Titled “Brigitte, une femme libre”, the series will chart the life of French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife. Gaumont is keeping the plot of the show under wraps and will be announcing the cast in the next few weeks.
Brigitte Macron’s life story surely provides plenty of material for a TV series. She met Emmanuel Macron while teaching theater at the Catholic high school Providence in Amiens. Macron was then 15 years old, while she was 40 and married with three children. In a recent interview with Paris Match, Brigitte Macron talked about her anxiety over their age gap, saying that her “head was in a mess” after she fell in...

Paris-based Lincoln TV is set to reunite with the creative team behind “Mirage” on a period series about the turbulent life of Sylvia Kristel, the 1970’s sex symbol and star of the erotic film trilogy “Emmanuelle.”
Titled “Sylvia,” the six-part series will be based on Kristel’s 2006 autobiography “Nue” (“Naked”), in which the late actress chronicles her rise and tragic downfall.
Currently at the script stage, the series is being created and penned by Bénédicte Charles and Olivier Pouponneau, who previously wrote “Mirage” with Franck Philippon. Lincoln TV, the well-established banner founded by veteran producers Christine de Bourbon-Busset and Marc Missonnier, has acquired the audiovisual rights to Kristel’s autobiography from the publishing house Cherche-Midi.
The project is currently being shopped to key French channels and Lincoln TV is aiming to partner up with a Flemish co-producer.
“We think the story of Sylvia will strike a chord in the post-MeToo era.

The Alliance, the new partnership formed by leading European pubcasters to counter the growing power of Netflix and other players, is revving up with two new international dramas, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Mirage.”
The Alliance was formed last year by France Televisions, Germany’s Zdf and Italy’s Rai. The partners unveiled their two new ambitious shows Wednesday at Series Mania in Lille, France.
For France Televisions in particular, the series are part of a wider move into high-end international drama that also includes French series like “Germinal,” based on Emile Zola’s classic novel, and the adaptation of Guillaume Musso’s bestseller, “La jeune fille et la nuit,” both of which France Televisions is developing outside of the Alliance.
The French pubcaster’s push has been spearheaded by Nathalie Biancolli, an industry veteran who helped created Snd, the commercial division of M6 network, and worked at...

Europe’s pubcasters have joined forces to combat such streaming giants as Netflix and Amazon in the international TV market — and the first projects from this collaboration are under way.
Continental Europe’s leading public broadcasters — Italy’s Rai, France Televisions and Germany’s Zdf — in March forged a scripted content co-production pact called the Alliance with the stated goal of co-financing innovative, higher-profile, and generally bigger TV series for viewers in Europe and the rest of the world.
Meant to give participants greater firepower against the Netflixes of this world, the Alliance has spawned several projects, including a high-end “Leonardo” skein, with Frank Spotnitz on board and Rai in the leading role. It is the first of the projects expected to hit screens, in 2019.
“There are so many available platforms these days that local audiences are getting used to seeing the best of what’s out there day-and-date with the rest of the world,...

U.S. showrunner Frank Spotnitz (“The Man in the High Castle”) and British writer Steve Thompson (“Sherlock”) have been recruited by Italy’s Rai and Lux Vide to develop “Leonardo,” an English-language TV series that will portray the Renaissance genius as a gay outsider.
“He was a real outsider for those times. He was an illegitimate child, gay, vegetarian and left-handed,” said Rai Head of Drama Eleonora Andreatta, echoing a description found in “Leonardo da Vinci,” a new biography of the Italian polymath by U.S. author Walter Isaacson.
The new eight-part show, which Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions is co-producing with Lux Vide, is expected to be the first project to hit the airwaves from The Alliance, the co-production group formed by continental Europe’s top pubcasters: Rai, France Televisions, and Germany’s Zdf. Connect3 Media, Racine Media, and Canadian production and distribution outfit Cineflix Media have attached Gomorrah series writers Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli to lead the book-to-tv adaptation of WWII crime story The Butchers Of Berlin.
Connect3 Media and Racine Media recently scored the rights to the murder mystery novel, written by Chris Petit, which is set in war-torn Nazi Germany 1943 and centers on financial crime investigator August Schlegel, who is assigned to a homicide case and finds himself immersed in a murky world. The book is the first in a developing series following Schlegel through the plotting and paranoia of the Third Reich. Fasoli and Ravagli are also currently writing crime series ZeroZeroZero for Canal+, Sky, and Amazon.

Continental Europe’s leading public broadcasters have joined forces in a scripted content co-production pact that aims to counter the growing force of U.S. streaming services.
The potentially groundbreaking production agreement, called The Alliance, has been forged by French pubcaster France Televisions, Italy’s Rai TV, and Germany’s Zdf. Three joint projects are already in the works.
The goal of the group is to co-finance innovative, higher-profile, and generally “bigger TV series for viewers in Europe and all around the world,” they said in a joint statement.
The statement quoted France Televisions CEO Delphine Ernotte Cunci as saying that European pubcasters invest an annual total of €14 billion ($16.7 billion) in original programming while Netflix invests “only €7 billion.” She called for the pubcasters to pool resources in order to have greater weight “on the international scene.”
