At 20 years old, Jenna Ortega’s been there and done that where the record books are concerned. She’s part of Disney history and has been long before Netflix’s Wednesday series, thanks to a certain TV show: Elena of Avalor. However, the role wasn’t without difficulties.

HGTV’s Christina Hall has two dogs, and she features them in Christina on the Coast 2023. A recent episode of the series shows Christina and her husband, Josh Hall, taking the dogs to an animal empath to learn more about their thoughts and feelings. And the reality star has had difficulties with animals in the past.
She had to rehome her previous dog, Biggie, due to behavioral issues
Christina Hall’s dogs — Cash, a French bulldog, and Stella, Josh Hall’s dog — appear in Christina on the Coast 2023. Before Christina and Josh blended their dog families, Christina had another dog, Biggie. Christina welcomed the Rottweiler puppy to the family in December 2020, just three months after her split from Ant Anstead.
In October 2021, Christina posted a photo with Stella sitting on her lap and Cash in the foreground. “Sunsets with my boys and sweet girl lapdog,” she captioned the Instagram post.

There was a time when conspiracy theories were entertaining. No, seriously, I swear it’s true! In fact, tons of films took inspiration from them, including Prometheus, Transformers 3, and even the very first Captain America, just to name a few.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Christopher MacBride‘s paranoid thriller The Conspiracy, a found-footage indie gem in the vein of Eyes Wide Shut, only leaning more into the horror genre.
The film was inspired by actual conspiracy theories, notably those surrounding the Bohemian Club and the Bilderberg Group, both secretive organizations closed to the public and made up of a who’s who of power players in international politics and business.
In the film, “When two young filmmakers (Aaron Poole & Jim Gilbert) select a crazed conspiracy theorist as the subject of their new movie, they have no idea the terrifying peril they will put themselves in. When...

Canadian actor and filmmaker Aaron Poole shared the first details of his arthouse father-daughter road movie “Dada” with Variety this week, shortly after wrapping principal photography of the film on Manitoulin Island, located north of Toronto in Lake Huron.
Working steadily in North American TV (“Most Dangerous Game”) and film since the late 1990s, Poole, a classically trained actor, stepped behind the camera for his Toronto-premiering “Oracle” (2020), which was nominated for best narrative short at Slamdance and won the top prize at Montreal’s Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma.
In “Dada,” Poole’s feature directorial debut, James Gilbert and newcomer Ciara Alexys play a divorced father and teenage daughter who drive around the perimeter of a nuclear facility on the eve of the girl’s 16th birthday, playing nonsense games and reading things.
“The story is a love letter and a suicide note,” Poole told Variety. “It was written in response...

Small town rural living tends to instill a sense of malaise in youth and neither Nicole (Maddy Martin) nor Veronica (Jenna Warren) are exceptions to that rule. They’ve already made a pact to eventually get out of here for no other reason than to aspire towards something that didn’t seem like a dead-end. Because that’s what life is like now—a purgatory of hardship, tragedy, and sorrow. Nicole’s family mourns the loss of her older brother Seamus (Kyle Meagher) in a farming accident that ultimately left them without a farm. Now Dad is unemployed (Aaron Poole), and Mom (Miranda Calderon) frustrated at their lack of options. Veronica struggles with the loss of her innocence at the hands of an abusive guardian. And neither can fully share their pain.

David Prior's 2020 film "The Empty Man" opens with a prologue that could easily stand alone as one of the most chilling short films ever made. It's 1995, and two couples -- Paul (Aaron Poole) and Ruthie (Virginia Kull), Fiona (Jessica Matten) and Greg (Evan Jonigkeit) -- are hiking through the Ura Valley in Bhutan. After crossing an old, swaying suspension bridge across a yawning chasm, Paul hears a soft sound like someone blowing into an empty bottle. Curious, he wanders off across the mountaintop in search of the source of this sound. As the others watch, he slips through an unseen hole in the rocks and disappears, as though he was never there at all.
It's another twenty minutes before the title card of the movie appears, stylized as "The Em ty Man." By this point, all of the hikers are dead except for Paul, who is trapped in a different kind of hell.

There is a thin line between the mockumentary and the pseudo-documentary. While both categories warp the concept of non-fiction filmmaking, mockumentaries are satirical and often comedic, while pseudo-documentaries exist in the horror space. Think "Best in Show" versus "Cannibal Holocaust". The pseudo-documentary uses the idea of the truth to weaponize our fear. The more real the film seems, the scarier it is to the viewer. Yes, it's only a movie, but a good pseudo-documentary will worm its way into the back of your brain, asking, "But what if it is real?"
This category of film is often included in discussions of found footage films in general, as both try to convince the viewer what they're watching is real. Found footage is typically footage that is, well, found and is presented as unedited evidence of a crime, haunting, creature, or anything terrifying, but, with the pseudo-documentary, the filmmakers utilize interviews and...

Over and again throughout The Empty Man, we see characters sitting in the lotus position, cross-legged and attentive, a pose connoting receptivity. It is in the migration of this mindset from snowy Bhutan to small-town Missouri, muled from East to West by the unlucky occidental tourist who doubles as its title character, that David Prior’s film locates both its celestial sense of scale and a fine-grained gestural specificity. After literally stumbling into a cliffside cavern—the first unexpected plunge in a movie whose characters constantly find themselves either on shaky ground or descending into a darkness of their own volition—Paul (Aaron Poole) becomes transfixed by a skeletal figure whose meditative posture he adopts, seemingly permanently and much to the bewilderment of his fellow backpackers. Dragged back to the surface, he has become a husk, limbs locked and rapidly atrophying, staring out at the world with eyes wide shut.

"All it takes is one believer to change the world, and we got two!" "She just vanished..." eOne films has debuted an official trailer for an indie existential thriller titled The Education of Fredrick Fitzell, which is premiering at the Sitges Film Festival this month. Which is why we have a trailer for this now. The film is the first from Canadian director Christopher MacBride since he made The Conspiracy in 2012. Dylan O'Brien stars as Fredrick Fitzell, who seems to have a perfect life with a corporate job and relationship. After a chance encounter with a man forgotten from his youth, Fred literally and metaphorically journeys into his past, to figure out something that has been hiding there for years. The full cast includes Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Hannah Gross, Emory Cohen, Amanda Brugel, and Aaron Poole. This is one of these hyper-stylized films that is trying to offer something more intense than another bland story, and I'll admit I'm certainly curious. Mysteries and unanswered questions.

"The sport in its purest form - a hunt to kill." Quibi has revealed a full-length official trailer for a new film called Most Dangerous Game, another one of their launch offerings included as a "Movies in Chapters" selection (along with #FreeRayshawn). Even though we already have a "Most Dangerous Game"-esque film this year – The Hunt – here's yet another. Liam Hemsworth plays Dodge, who accepts the offer of a hunt to get out of debt. But turns out, he's not the hunter. He's the prey. "This action-thriller explores the limits of how far someone would go to fight for their life and their family. Let the games begin." This also stars Christoph Waltz, Sarah Gadon, Zach Cherry, Aaron Poole, Christopher Webster, Billy Burke, & Natasha Bordizzo. It actually looks solid, thanks to Waltz dropping another subtly creepy performance. Here's the full official trailer for Phil Abraham's Most Dangerous Game,...

Today marks the Blu-ray release of Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie's new horror film, The Void. Regular Screen Anarchy readers will recognize the co-directors as members of the renegade Winnipeg cinema collective Astron-6, but The Void is their first feature outside of that collective and it feels like a whole other beast. When a young cop named Carter (Aaron Poole) picks up an injured man on the side of the road and drives him to the nearest hospital, he has no idea that he's in for the night of his life. Working at the hospital, which is in the middle of packing up to close its doors, is his estranged wife Allison (Kathleen Munroe), and if the tension between them weren't thick enough already, a...

Void. “A completely empty space”… according to a quick Google search. Well, not so much, when it comes to art. In fact many an artist, whether it be in words, paint, sound, or pictures, have tried to fill it since mankind slithered out of the primordial soup eons ago. The attraction may be it is the blankest canvas of them all. And possibly the darkest…
The Void is the latest leap into the “empty space”, which lands chin deep in B-movie tentacle stew. Cooked up from the minds of Jeremy Gillespie and Steve Konstanski, both on writing and directing duties, and pretty much everything else. Their backgrounds are in art direction and practical effects, and they deftly handle the practical “Lovecraftian” creatures and blood splatter; lovingly dished up from the pages of a John Carpenter inspired recipe book.

A Perfectly written screenplay that will keep you hooked throughout! But, The Void is an example to all of those filmmakers who say "Let's fix it in the post production" and want to only use CGI blood instead of actual syrup mixed with whatever.
The characters and the plot that are cooked up for the movie are half-baked, and the actors, while not necessarily bad, are not given enough to rise up to a challenge of doing something more than what their half explained dimensional characters require them to do. One of the more action-packed features to come from the current crop of John Carpenter-inspired filmmakers, The Void finds collaborators Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski going much further than many of their peers: Where others might relish an hour or so of slow-build retro mood that leads to a single horrific set piece, these writer/directors graft enough plot for three different varieties of 1980s drive-in flicks into a single film. The result should find admirers among the fanboy crowd, raising the stakes for the team's next feature, even if it has little crossover potential.

Fans of Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie's work within the Canadian film collective known as Astron-6, specifically Manborg and Father's Day, are in for a surprise with their latest offering, The Void, which they wrote and directed together. Gone is the tongue-in-cheek, wink-and-a-nod satire of those two previous films, which has been replaced with a much darker and serious tone, all while still paying homage to a bygone era of genre cinema.

Three New Movies May Have Trouble Making Much of a Mark

Ghost in the Shell didn’t even do as well as I thought it may, opening with just $19 million, those late reviews helping to kill its weekend.

I was recently comparing directorial culture today with that of the 80s and 90s, referencing how new technology has allowed a disintegration of the old school “pay your dues” mentality. Forty years ago you had artists working their way up under the tutelage of established directors through the more niche technical departments. See James Cameron (matte painter on Escape from New York) and Joe Johnston (visual effects on Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark) as examples. I’m not saying this type of mailroom intern to studio executive evolution isn’t still possible or relevant, just that young filmmakers can currently make a calling card film like the $750,000 budgeted Safety Not Guaranteed and find themselves helming a $150 million blockbuster like Jurassic World in only three years.
