As of this writing, there have been well over 400 WrestleMania matches since the event began back in 1985. Since then, countless WWE wrestlers (and even a couple celebrities) have battled it out in so many different ways and with quality that runs the gamut from unwatchable to undeniable. In what is supposed to be WWE’s biggest annual show, some matches fall short, but others rise to the occasion and put together some unforgettable performances.
But today we’re celebrating the very best matches WrestleMania has ever offered wrestling fans. But first, some ground rules. First, as there are so many WrestleManias to cover, we are only going to allow one entry per event. The modern shows with two nights of festivities will only count as one combined event. Second, to keep things from becoming repetitive, there will be no match redundancies. If two wrestlers battled it out in multiple WrestleManias,...

This article contains mild Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire spoilers.
Before Godzilla vs. Kong finished its opening weekend, genre director and lifelong kaiju fan, Adam Wingard, knew he had to get these two crazy guys together again. Despite releasing the film in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic—Godzilla vs. Kong was in fact one of the first bright spots for movie theaters in the spring of 2021 when social distancing kept cinemas at a quarter capacity—the vibe in the auditorium was still electric by picture’s end.
“I remember there’s a moment at the end of the movie when Godzilla and Kong briefly team up to kill Mechagodzilla,” Wingard says while stifling a sheepish chuckle at the absurdity of it all. “And when that happened, the roof blew off the place. People were just so into it, man, they were so excited, cheering, and stuff. It hit...

In Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong," the two Titans clash viciously and almost push one another to the brink of destruction. However, the rise of a new threat, Mechagodzilla (possessed by King Ghidorah's consciousness), prompts the two to cooperate and take down their common enemy. Although Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways after this event, is this temporary truce meant to last? This question leads us directly into "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," in which Wingard has returned to orchestrate a memorable showdown between the colossal Titans amidst an unknown threat poised to destroy the world as we know it. While a classic premise for a creature feature, it is a story that fans of the MonsterVerse are eager to experience, especially with the promise of a brand new antagonist lurking in the shadows.
Although another showdown between Kong and Godzilla is inevitable, it is hardly the...

There are few television shows where one moment, you can see wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper fully freaked over a poltergeist and the next, catch The Partridge Family‘s Shirley Jones in an ascot mildly put out by a haunted house. Such is the joy of Celebrity Ghost Stories.
One of the show’s many notable qualities is that the celebrities within one episode are strangely matched, like someone tore out pages from a bunch of People magazines from the 1970s and beyond, threw them in the air like confetti, and then picked 3 or 4 celebs at random to group together per episode. This isn’t a criticism — what would the alternative even be, weird theme nights? — but it’s amusingly whiplash-inducing all the same.

Muhammad Ali will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2024, Variety has learned exclusively.
Ali will be inducted during the Hall of Fame ceremony taking place on April 5 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He will be inducted by his widow, Lonnie Ali. The ceremony will be livestreamed on Peacock beginning at 10 p.m. Et/9 p.m. Ct.
Ali dabbled in professional wrestling at different times in his career. He famously fought an exhibition match against Japanese pro wrestling legend Antonio Inoki in Tokyo in 1976. In the leadup to that matchup, he appeared at a Wwwf (now WWE) show, where he entered the ring and challenged Gorilla Monsoon. Ali would go on to appear as a special guest referee for the main event of WrestleMania I in 1985, which saw Hulk Hogan and Mr. T face off against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. Ali also appeared...

The release date for WWE 2K24 is getting closer, and fans have been waiting to get their hands on it. The upcoming title will also include a 40 Years of WrestleMania edition, so fans can look forward to reliving some iconic matches. The roster for the game is also looking good, with several returning characters joined by a few surprise entries.
Among them, however, fans have noticed the absence of one superstar, leading to a lot of confusion, especially as the Showcase mode is filled with former WWE legends, so missing out on this particular superstar makes little to no sense, but that could still change before the game is out.
WWE 2K24 Showcase Matches Could Still Feature This Superstar

The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" guest star roster is impressive. The series has seen special appearances by the likes of Sean William Scott, Lance Reddick, P. Diddy, Tom Sizemore, and more, but among the best of the best is "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who played the wrestler known as "Da Maniac" in the hit FX comedy series. First appearing in the episode "The Gang Wrestles for the Troops," Piper really gives his all to the character, who is a down-on-his-luck amateur wrestler who works in the local Philly circuit. It looks like he might live out of his car and he tries to sign autographs on parking tickets, but he's pretty good at the whole wrestling thing (and he's a fantastic Invigiron berry pill salesman!).

While The Iron Claw is earning high marks from critics and viewers alike (with an enviable A-Cinemascore rating), wrestling fans – who mostly love the film – have one issue with it. They don’t like the way wrestling legend Ric Flair was depicted, with many saying he came off as cartoonish. It’s not that Flair is depicted in a negative way; it’s just that fans feel the actor, Aaron Dean Eisenberg, wasn’t able to capture the legendary wrestler’s charisma in a way that makes sense.
“Well, look, what he (director Sean Durkin) should have done is use archival footage of Ric Flair and then have this guy maybe come in and do the mannerisms of Ric Flair in the ring,” said our own Travis Hopson (who also has his own site), who gave the film a very positive review but noted that as his only problem with the film.

Lock & Load, the sequel to 2021’s Holiday Monday, is once again directed and written by Nathan Shepka, though this time with a little additional script work by Tom Jolliffe. Shepka also returns as Nick, the independent security contractor. This time out he and his partner Derek are taking some target practice on another bank holiday when they get a call from Agent Stokes’ (Graeme MacPherson) wife. He hasn’t come home, do they know where he is?
They don’t know, though we know he’s been after arms dealer Miles Steiger and his partner The Chess Master, “Everyone’s a pawn in my game”, and unfortunately has had his cover blown.

The They Live episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
I bet you thought when we started covering adaptations that we would be going to the Stephen King well more than a few times and believe me, we will. Today though, we are covering our second John Carpenter helmed adaptation after we discussed The Thing in the inaugural episode. While that one was pretty well known for being a more faithful adaptation of the book his hero Howard Hawks had adapted, not a lot of people may realize that They Live was sparked from a very short comic that adapted a very short story.

WWE 2K23 features quite a few improvements to the franchise formula that will certainly be welcomed by wrestling game fans everywhere. Of course, some things never change, which means that WWE 2K23 still makes you unlock quite a few wrestlers via gameplay accomplishments and by spending both real and virtual currency.
The very good news is that WWE 2K23 makes the various unlock processes fairly painless. The problem is that the game doesn’t always do a great job of telling you exactly how to unlock those wrestlers or the best way to go about acquiring all of them. Hopefully, we can help ease that part of the unlock system just a bit.
How to Unlock Every WWE 2K23 Wrestler With Virtual Currency
The vast majority of wrestlers in WWE 2K23 are unlocked via the game’s Virtual Currency (Vc) system. Every wrestler available via the in-game store costs 1,000 Vc to unlock.

The original "Transformers" movie was about 20 years old before I finally got around to watching it, but it still took me by surprise. As a younger fan, high off of the 2007 movie directed by alleged pigeon killer Michael Bay, my first instinct was to dive right into the original animated series. The 1980s "Transformers" cartoon was immediately entrancing with its aesthetic, catchy theme song, and dated-yet-charming animation. After watching the series, the only natural step forward was to move on to the motion picture. A bigger movie budget meant better animation and a more ambitious story, which no doubt excited fans during its original theatrical run.
Then, the film's opening scene hits you like an Autobot truck. The cast of characters you've grown to love, such as the Autobots Ironhide, Ratchet, and Prowl, are immediately killed as Decepticons hijack their ship. Gone are the fights from the original cartoon that usually left both sides unscathed.

As with the cult of fans of John Carpenter’s remarkably poignant 1988, sci-fi action movie They Live, Martin Scorsese will obey. In a review Scorsese wrote a number of years ago but going viral now, the legendary director named They Live as “one of the best films of a fine American director.”
In his review of They Live, Martin Scorsese offered a dissection on the themes. “This movie was Carpenter’s commentary on what he saw as the excesses of the Reagan era, and the movie shares many qualities with pictures made during the Depression, such as Heroes for Sale and Wild Boys of the Road. It’s lyrical and tough at the same time, with a strong sense of community among the displaced people living in makeshift homes on the outskirts of L.A…and the mood is unusually sad and bitter.”

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features seven matches… Including a Women’s Roh title match! Anyway, on with the review.
Match #1: Juice Robinson def. Travis Williams
My Thoughts: Juice Robinson makes another appearance for Aew and faces some decent competition in Travis Williams. This was a well-paced, competitive, start to Dark.
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Ruby Soho & Willow Nightingale def. Emi Sakura & Diamante
My Thoughts: The new team of Ruby Soho & Willow Nightingale get another outing, this time against the heel team of Emi Sakura & Diamante, who have worked together before and delivered each and every time. And the same is the case here, with Soho and Nightgale really gelling – I’d definitely like to see them stay together as a team for a while longer even though I’d like to see Willow Nightingale make her way up the singles scene too.

Science fiction easily lends itself to incisive cynicism about our future. It's understandable. Sci-fi is just one tool creators have to pull out today's big issues and blow them up into a scenario that we can consider from a distance. Still, too much grim introspection creates a feedback loop of depression when breakthroughs happen. We begin to think about robot apocalypses and unstoppable viruses, tech magnates going supervillain, and "Black Mirror" episodes coming true. Sometimes our paranoia is unfortunately justified, but we earn a chance to make it better.
This form of sci-fi is meant to be cautionary, not depressive, but we've all been going through a lot lately, and it's hard not to feel the weight of the world getting heavier. So let's have a nice day for once and look at some science fiction movies that leave us happier than we were before we pressed play. These are...

Do you smell what the Duke is cookin’? Rian Johnson, director of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, has made the claim that Dave Bautista is the best wrestler-turned-actor to ever walk down the aisle and onto the red carpet.
In a recent interview with The Atlantic, Rian Johnson heaped much praise on Dave Bautista, saying the former WWE Superstar was the biggest surprise in the ensemble cast. “When I was writing [his character, a men’s-rights streamer named Duke Cody], I was picturing a scrawny dude who’s trying to overcompensate. When Bautista was brought up, I was instantly so smitten by the idea. I’ve been a very big fan of his dramatic chops as an actor.”
When the interviewer suggested that Bautista was “low-key the greatest wrestler-to-actor ever,” Johnson agreed, even saying that could make even bigger waves under the direction of another master. “I think somebody like [Paul Thomas Anderson] is going to give him...

John Carpenter's films have a world-weary sense about them. From the claustrophobic body horror of "The Thing" to the dystopian movie "Escape from New York," no matter how ridiculous the sci-fi concepts that Carpenter brought, they always had a sense of authenticity and grittiness to them. So when it came to casting for his films, it only makes sense that Carpenter would want his lead actors to reflect that same type of authenticity and world-weariness. Such was the case for his 1988 film "They Live," a biting and provocative science fiction satire that follows an everyday man who gets caught up in an otherworldly conspiracy.
The main character only referred to as "Nada," is portrayed by none other than wrestling legend Rowdy Roddy Piper. The wrestler's performance in "They Live" helped keep the subversive film entertaining, with Piper's physicality and charm integral to Nada's character. Without Piper, Carpenter fans and...

"They Live" isn't John Carpenter's best movie, but it is his most socially-conscious. An anonymous drifter named Nada (Roddy Piper) discovers that aliens have invaded Earth. Worse, they've already conquered us because they've foregone the usual "flying saucers blast skyscrapers with lasers" route. No, these aliens walk among us, disguised as ordinary humans, while feeding us subliminal messages: "Buy." "Conform." "Obey."
The story is an allegory for how media and culture indoctrinate us so we spend our lives serving capitalism. Piper's character is able to see the secret messages when he wears a pair of special sunglasses the aliens created. This too, is a metaphor, for having your eyes opened to the reality of the world.
Carpenter, a "no Bs" director if there ever was one, told Starlog Magazine #136 (November 1988) what he was satirizing:
"The picture's premise is that the 'Reagan Revolution' is run by aliens from another galaxy.

Fans of weird and eerie German movies, rejoice! Your Halloween spooky viewing has arrived, and it's carved out a steady spot in Netflix's Top 10 trending watches. "Old People" is German-Romanian filmmaker Andy Fetscher's horror thriller wherein the old eat the young, bludgeon them, and sometimes vomit on them. It's the sort of concept that M. Night Shyamalan would have a field day with, but Fetscher adds more chaos and a cadre of monsters at the door.
A title card at the opening reads:
In times of yore, an avenging spirit was thought to inhabit old people. A dark power that took possession of the frailest members of the clan and drive them into a seemingly blind rage.
That's right – this is functionally an elderly rage-zombie movie. What a time to be alive.
At its core, the story focuses on generational disconnect by observing lonely elders, excluded from local festivities,...

For John Carpenter, casting professional wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper in "They Live" was an easy choice.
"They Live," Carpenter's 1988 sci-fi action film, follows a nameless drifter who discovers a pair of sunglasses that reveal the world to him as it truly is. When he puts on the glasses, he sees that the American ruling class is made up of aliens, who disguise themselves as humans and enjoy lives of luxury while the rest of us toil away.
Piper, known best for his time as a bagpipe-playing villain in the WWF, played that drifter, who at the end of the film is credited as "Nada." According to an interview in Starlog Magazine, it was Piper's grit and physical toughness that drew Carpenter to him for the part:
"Unlike most Hollywood actors, Roddy has life written all over him. He has been hit so many times that he is really broken up.

When legendary pro wrestler Ric Flair recently held his retirement match at age 73, many said, "He's going to go out like Randy 'The Ram' Robinson." The reference is to Darren Aronofsky's film "The Wrestler" where it is implied that the protagonist of the film dies in the ring in search of another moment of glory. While Flair survived (after passing out twice during the match), the reality is that "The Wrestler" mimics the tragic lives of many other aging stars from the wrestling business.
The comeback narrative was eerily similar to the career of Mickey Rourke, who played Randy "The Ram" Robinson. Esquire documented the actor's fall from grace in the 1990s, which included a dead brother, a failed marriage, and bad plastic surgery. Aronofsky knew that Rourke was the perfect actor for the part, and Rourke knew that the meaty role would require him to return to some of those dark places.

Why do horror movies still feel undervalued? One thing’s for certain: In this age of geekery and craft reigning supreme, critics and academics no longer dismiss the genre as disreputable with the kneejerk regularity some once did. But even now there’s talk of “elevated horror” (see that concept’s lambasting in “Scream 5″) appearing in artier explorations of dread and terror — Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” Rose Glass’ “Saint Maud” — that are clearly distinguished from, well, non-elevated horror. The idea being that they engage your brain more than just showing brains…eaten by zombies or splattered against the wall.

Gene LeBell, a pioneering mixed martial artist and hugely respected Hollywood stuntman, has died at the age of 89. LeBell was a behind-the-scenes giant in films, professional wrestling, and combat sports. He introduced Bruce Lee to the art of grappling, and counted among his students the eclectic likes of Elvis Presley, Chuck Norris, Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, Roddy Piper, and Ronda Rousey. Over a career that spanned more than half a century, LeBell became known as "The Godfather of Grappling." His chokehold technique was legendary, which, allegedly, Steven Seagal learned the hard way.

Tuesday’s episode of “Young Rock” is a special one. Not only does the installment chronicle Dwayne Johnson’s first-ever WWF match, but the episode was written by those who are incredibly familiar with the events chronicled within: Johnson, Hiram Garcia and Brian Gewirtz.
The episode, titled “Corpus Christi,” marks Johnson and Garcia’s screenwriting debut, while Gewirtz was a longtime head writer for WWE. Combined, the trio distilled a wealth of knowledge and memories into a half-hour episode that also includes appearances by wrestling legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H – a task that they admitted was difficult.

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Vince McMahon pretending that he is funding an independent promotion and a developmental school at the same time. Nxt…it exists. I enjoy the matches…usually. That being said, Nxt is most certainly a WWE product. It has the WWE house style getting mixed with a diluted version of the Ring Of Honor house style, but without any of the loose (very loose) psychology of either. I don’t despise Nxt, but I definitely don’t see it as so separate from Vince McMahon’s vision for pro wrestling as others do, so I don’t shower it with praise. There’s too many stories in Nxt. There’s too many titles in Nxt. There’s no true focal point, except for when someone like Finn Balor has the strap wrapped around his waist.

Welcome to this week’s Monday Night Raw review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Woody Allen creeps me out. Blagaingo! This is the final show before Starrcade. I love Starrcade. The 1980s are a sterling time in wrestling. You get the best matches from all corners of the National Wrestling Alliance. Greg Valentine, Roddy Piper, Nikita Koloff, Dusty Rhodes, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Magnum Ta and Ric Flair are some of the biggest stars in wrestling. The Road Warriors and The Steiner Brothers battle The Midnight Express and The Rock N’ Roll Express for tag supremacy as Jim Cornette falls fat-ass first from a scaffold every week on TBS Superstation. We have MTV and steroids and f—ked-up hair-styles and Traci Lords (who is at least 18 for sure), all of which will last forever and never lose their luster. Cobra is the greatest movie ever made.

Social media is in an uproar over Peacock’s decision to edit certain past events from its recently acquired WWE Network video library.
NBCUniversal has been trimming some matches, along with questionable racial content and profanity. Fans complaining are claiming that by doing so, the networks are “erasing history,” in the words of some enthusiasts.
WWE and NBCUniversal announced a multiyear agreement in late January that was reportedly worth $1 billion. The WWE Network will remain accessible in the U.S. until April 6, then shift to Peacock.
Sources indicate all content on Peacock is rated and subject to the network’s standards and practices. The WWE programming being edited is generally older footage that’s more raw than the family friendly WWE events showcased more recently on network television.
One huge fan complaint about the Peacock trims centers on WrestleMania 6. Aired on pay-per-view in 1990, the event saw the late Roddy Piper take on Bad News Brown.

Stephen DeBro’s new documentary “18th & Grand” weaves together boxing, wrestling, punk rock, roller derby and local history with an “only in L.A.” perspective that firmly situates the historic auditorium in the city’s culture.

Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for January 19th include Giant from the Unknown, The Village in the Woods, Godforsaken, The Clown Doll, and Dark Show.

The Slamdance Film Festival has unveiled its lineup of 25 features along with 107 shorts and episodics for the mostly virtual 27th edition of the festival — a number that equals previous editions of the festival.
The opening night film, which will screen at a drive-in in Joshua Tree on Feb. 13, is the world premiere of “No Trace” (Nulle Trace) from Canadian director and screenwriter Simon Lavoie. The festival will close with the world premiere screening of “18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium Story” at a Los Angeles drive-in on Feb. 25. The feature documentary by Stephen DeBro is the story of Los Angeles told through the prism of a historic fight palace and Aileen Eaton,...
