The Lost Boys wasn’t just a massive box office success, it was also a game-changer in vampire media, making the undead hip again and convincing a whole generation that they too could become juvenile vampire hunters (though I know a lot of people who wouldn’t mind joining Kiefer Sutherland’s punk-rock group of dreamy Nosferatu).
And as is often in the case in Hollywood, the film’s near-instant popularity meant that the studio was immediately interested in a follow-up, with director Joel Schumacher even coming up with a pitch titled “The Lost Girls” meant to follow a different tribe of female vampires. Of course, we all know that this project never materialized, and fans were forever left to wonder about what a proper Lost Boys sequel might look like. Or were they?
What a lot of horror fans don’t realize is that we actually did get not...

Only '90s kids raised in video stores — or, more likely, their dads — will recall Luis Llosa's 1993 military thriller "Sniper" with any clarity. "Sniper" stars Tom Berenger as Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett as he becomes lost in the jungle while trying to complete an assassination mission with a militarily inexperienced sharpshooter played by Billy Zane. The bulk of the film takes place in the woods of Colombia, although it was shot in Australia. The film was well-liked but critics noted that it was pretty generic; Roger Ebert gave "Sniper" three stars, noting that it was competent but lacked originality. The film boasts a 38 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that comes from a mere 13 reviews.
What only fans of "Sniper" might know is that Tom Berenger returned to play Thomas Beckett in Craig R. Baxley's "Sniper 2" in 2002 and P.J. Pesce's "Sniper 3" in 2004. These two sequels...

Had you witnessed last night’s episode of Supernatural, you saw the Winchester-British Men of Letters alliance finally start to implode, something we’ve been waiting to see for some time now. But, with the season finale less than two weeks away, it’s expected that major developments occur.
With that, it doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that the trailers become increasingly more vague, even when they’re of the extended variety like the one embedded at the top of this article. Still, we can glean from the footage provided that both the unfolding situations involving the British Men of Letters and Lucifer’s baby will play key roles, unless, of course, the scene hinting at the latter was taken from a future episode.
That aside, it’ll be interesting to watch Mary Winchester finally get her hands on Toni Bevell, whom she still owes payback for brutally torturing her son,...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).
Howard tells Michelle that some kind of...

The 100, Season 2, Episode 11, “Coup de Grâce”
Written by Charlie Craig
Directed by P.J. Pesce
Airs Wednesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW
On this week’s The 100, Clarke takes command, Bellamy joins forces with Maya, Octavia straddles the line between Grounder and Sky Person, and Cage usurps his father.
“Coup de Grâce” is not only an astonishingly well-done episode of The 100, but also a brilliant piece of television. While the show is naturally concerned with the flow of its story–and the various pieces of its story falling gracefully into place–The 100‘s biggest concern lies with the characters and how being in this harsh, unforgiving landscape is transforming them. Some of them are broken by it, some of them adapt to survive, and some of them rise steadily to the challenge of living in such a dangerous, lawless place.

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 21: “King of the Damned”
Written by Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming
Directed by P.J. Pesce
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW
Throughout the season, there has been two wars for power, as Abaddon has threatened Crowley’s position as the ruler of Hell, while Metatron has set himself up as Angel enemy number one by tossing everyone out of Heaven. With Castiel reluctantly taking up the mantle of resistance leader, Metatron no longer remained uncontested, while Abaddon continued to pose the biggest threat to the world and the Winchesters. This week’s episode sees major blows delivered on both wars, in a compelling outing that sees a key Angel potentially switch sides.

We don't know about you guys, but we're gonna just forget that last week's episode of "Supernatural" happened and instead focus on tonight's Ep. #9.21, "King of the Damned." In fact, here's a clip to help wash away any remaining traces of the bad taste left by that whole spinoff idea.
"Supernatural" Episode 9.21 - "King of the Damned" (airs 5/6/14, 9-10pm): Castiel (Misha Collins) captures one of Metatron’s angels (guest star Gordon Woolvet) and asks Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help with the interrogation.

Also, Castiel (Misha Collins) sets a meeting with Gadreel (guest star Tahmoh Penikett). Pj Pesce directed the episode written by Eugenie Ross-Leming and Brad Buckner.

This is it Fringe fans. It’s all over. Are you ready?
Broyles lies to get Michael’s location out of one of the loyalists. He sends the info to Olivia. Michael is being held on Liberty Island, which is a fortress. Broyles can’t get them in, and breaching the perimeter would be a death sentence. Olivia has an idea - one that Peter hates. She will go in using the other universe. Walter (naturally) has a stash of cortexiphan hidden away. The idea is that if he injects her with multiple doses it will trigger her powers and give her a window to move between universes. This comes with a huge amount of potential side effects, but Olivia insists that she can handle it.

Two years ago, director P.J. Pesce saw fit to reduce Corey Haim to a mid-credits cameo in Lost Boys: The Tribe, which was both a celebration of douchebag vampires as well as an entirely anticlimactic follow-up to Joel Schumacher's 1987 cult vampire flick. As far as straight-to-dvd efforts go, The Tribe sold deceptively well (290,450 DVD units or roughly $5 million worth), thanks to a few decades of pent-up demand as well as the inevitable sheer curiosity factor. However, any desire to see the franchise continue was quickly sated by The Tribe's utter disregard for any semblance of vampire mythology. The spectacle of those so-called surfer vampires also left no unquenched thirst even to those unfortunate enough to have witnessed this sequel in the depths of the most unforgiving cinematic desert.

Chicago – Does anyone else remember when crappy straight-to-dvd sequels were pretty much reserved for horror movies and kid’s flicks? Sure, we expected a new “Leprechaun” or “Air Bud” movie every now and then, but the action market has really gotten into this game recently and produced their share of junk. Take for example the awful “Smokin’ Aces 2,” a shoot-em-up that makes Joe Carnahan’s original look like a genre classic by comparison.
“Smokin’ Aces” Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
To be fair, the original “Smokin’ Aces,” also recently released on Blu-ray to coincide with the ignominious debut of its quasi-sequel, Is a genre classic to a lot of young fans who turned it into a massive hit on the home market. Action films always do well on DVD and “Smokin’ Aces” is an unapolegetic bullet opera with a ridiculously talented cast.

Smokin Aces 2 is a bad movie, folks. I don't know what else to say about it. It's a shitty, shitty film. It's irredeemably bad. It's boring. It's aimless. It's pointless. It's ineptly directed, barely written, and terribly acted. The effects are laughable, the pacing is irregular, and the plot is nonexistent. It shouldn't be watched. It doesn't deserve its title, it doesn't deserve Vinnie Jones, and it doesn't deserve your time.
Lookit: I dug the original Smokin' Aces. It was solid, tightly-paced, well-constructed escapist fare that breezed toward a killer Mexican stand-off. Granted, it was little more than a long, elaborate setup for a 20-minute shoot-out, but the setup was painless and the shoot-out was glorious. Also, the capping of Ben Affleck nearly atoned for a decade's worth of cinematic sins.

Granted, it was little more than a long, elaborate setup for a 20-minute shoot-out, but the setup was painless and the shoot-out was glorious. Also, the capping of Ben Affleck nearly atoned for a decade's worth of cinematic sins.

Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball Quick Thoughts: I'm a fan of the original Smokin' Aces as a piece of escapist fun. It's also a film I would recommend fans of absurd black-comedy action features pick up and add to their collection. However, Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball (referred to as Smokin' Aces: Blowback in all of the special features) just isn't up to par, and for the most part it can't really help but look like the direct-to-dvd/Blu-ray film it is. Tons of obvious green screen work, second rate effects and an aging Tom Berenger as your biggest star doesn't exactly spell out top quality. Director P.J. Pesce was obviously working with a minimal budget and he did what he could with what he had, but a stand-out film experience this is not.

Not long after the certifiably insane Smokin' Aces came and went and then sold a Lot of dvds, we started hearing all sorts of little stories about sequels, prequels, or any sort of follow-up. Clearly someone at Universal (besides Aces director/co-writer Joe Carnahan, I mean) saw the potential in keeping this franchise afloat, even if that meant remanding the subsequent sequels to the "lesser" direct-to-video market. And even those who adored Smokin' Aces would have to see the logic there: Pretty much all the characters from the first flick were dead, and even those who survived ... aren't exactly huge stars.
So off to the video shelves we go with Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball, and this time the directorial reins are in the hands of P.J. Pesce -- and if you're looking for a guy to bang out a direct-to-video sequel, Mr. Pesce is your man. His previous...

When I’m sent DVD’s to review, I feel I have a a sense of responsibility to make sure that I bring you the best and well rounded view that I possibly can. When straight-to-dvd sequel, Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball came through my letter box from Universal Pictures, I thought to myself…. I want to watch this but I haven’t seen the first one! That was soon rectified by bumping it up to the top of my LoveFilm list and off we went!
The original Smokin’ Aces had an ensemble cast which included Ryan Reynolds, Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Alicia Keys, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven and Chris Pine as well as being directed by Joe Carnahan. The second installment however was less impressive having just one member of the original cast in the form of Tommy Flanagan (the guy in Gladiator who was Russell Crowe’s side-kick...

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming “Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball,” a prequel to Joe Carnahan’s kinetic hitman flick.
“Smokin’ Aces 2″ synopsis: Federal agents once again match wits with a cadre of creative killers in the high-octane feature-length film Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball. Walter Weed (Tom Berenger) is an unassuming desk jockey at the FBI when the Bureau uncovers a plot to assassinate him. A team of degenerate, psychotic assassins dispatched by mystery man Hal Leuco to win a huge bounty includes a resourceful beauty who has a unique method of killing her prey (Martha Higareda), a power-tool wielding psychopath (Vinnie Jones) and a deadly master of disguise (Tommy Flanagan). Also in the hunt is the fan-favorite Tremor family from the original film, featuring nymphomaniacal gun-nut (Autumn Reeser) and her lethal kinfolk (Maury Sterling, Michael Parks and C. Ernst Harth). Did you know that there was a sequel in the works for 2006’s Smokin’ Aces, with practically none of the original cast? Neither did we, until this trailer came across The Flickcast desk. It would be an interesting take, if it had any of the same people involved as the original film.
While the film doesn’t look like it will do much justice to Joe Carnahan’s original, the trailer was quite clever. It starts off by making sure we see some of our favorite faces from the original, such as Jeremy Piven, and then it throws a record scratch in to tell us that we won’t see them anymore.
Instead of a well-rounded cast consisting of Piven, Ray Liotta, Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Keys, and tons others, we now treated to the all-star cast of Vinnie Jones, Ernie Hudson, Tom Berenger, and the guy who had...

I still haven't seen Joe Carnahan's Smokin' Aces, but the high energy hitman flick it seems to have a fair amount of fans out there. (Personally I always thought it looked like a Guy Ritchie knockoff, but maybe I'm wrong on that.) At any rate, the film was apparently popular enough to warrant a direct-to-dvd sequel... er, I mean, prequel. Joe Carnahan obviously has better things to do with his time (like directing The A-Team, for example), but he is still credited as executive producer on Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball. The actual director of this flick, unfortunately, is P.J. Pesce -- the same man behind such memorable Dtv flicks as Lost Boys: The Tribe and From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter. None of the big name original cast members are returning for this film, but Tommy Flanagan will reprise his role as Lazlo Soot, and...

I'll admit, I didn't like Joe Carnahan's Smokin Aces as much as I was hoping to. Disappointed is probably the appropriate word. That's not to say there isn't things to like about the film... it just wasn't the balls out action film that many were expecting. And the direct-to-dvd sequel, Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassin’s Ball, isn't likely to be any better. In fact, it will probably be a lot worse, especially considering that Lost Boys: The Tribe director P.J. Pesce is at the helm. The press release advertises that the film "features a sexy cast, whip-smart script and hyper-kinetic visuals." The big selling point is that Lazlo Soot and the Tremor Brothers from the original theatrical film make their return. Here is the short plot synopsis (plot? do we really need a plot in a Smokin Aces direct-to-video sequel?): Federal agents once again match wits with a...

Sure, the title of the direct-to-dvd follow-up to Joe Carnahan's wicked violent Smokin' Aces isn't Electric Bugaloo, but I happen to like it better than Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball. So sue me. This prequel, from director P.J. Pesce (Lost Boys: The Tribe), follows the story of several of the world's greatest, sexiest and most obnoxiously insane assassins -- all looking to kill one man, the criminally pedestrian Tom Berenger. More specifically, the plot goes something like this: Walter Weed (Tom Berenger) is an unassuming desk jockey at the FBI when the Bureau uncovers a plot to assassinate him. Vinnie Jones has some crimes to commit.
The "X-Men: The Last Stand" actor has signed for two upcoming films: the comedy "Wedlocked" and Universal's Joe Carnahan-produced prequel "Smokin' Aces: Blowback."
In "Wedlocked," Jones plays a Croatian mobster who attempts to kidnap his crush, who is on her honeymoon with the American man she married to get U.S. citizenship. Dave Annable and Katharine McPhee previously were cast in writer-director Rob Hedden's film.
Shauna and David Jackson and Rann and Gina Watumull are producing the independent feature.

I was a little surprised that any studio greenlit a prequel to Smokin' Aces, given that it was a marginal hit at best and the director, Joe Carnahan, has much higher-profile projects in the works. But now the picture is a little clearer. Carnahan has announced on his blog that he won't be the one directing the new movie-- he's passed that duty on to P.J. Pesce, who last made the direct-to-dvd Lost Boys sequel. Carnahan sounds stoked about the news in his post, writing "I think he's going to do a great f*cking job." But you have to wonder if there's a little overcompensating going on. Lost Boys 2 wasn't exactly the best-received sequel that no one really asked for, as you can tell in the comments section below Carnahan's post. But if he trusts the guy, he trusts him. Everyone has to start somewhere, right?...
