Younger readers may not be aware of this, but there was a time before the streaming wars when a movie could still be profitable without having a successful run at the box office. In fact, the direct-to-video market used to be so huge that it was worth producing smaller projects specifically for video and DVD, especially when a wide theatrical release might result in them losing money. Unfortunately, the reduced budgets often resulted in cheap cash-grabs when it came to franchises, with most movie sequels decreasing in quality the further they strayed from their cinema screen origins.
However, there were exceptions to this trend, as the lowered expectations also meant that creative risks could sometimes be taken with existing properties – with filmmakers being allowed to innovate instead of simply rehashing what came before. One example of these creative outliers is the Warlock series, as the third movie is actually a...

Human remains recently discovered by hikers in the Mount Baldy wilderness outside Los Angeles were identified as those of British actor Julian Sands, who had been missing since January, authorities announced Tuesday.
On Saturday morning, civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after they found the remains, which were then taken to the San Bernardino County Coroner for identification.
“The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood,” the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. “The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results. We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands.”
An avid outdoorsman, Sands was reported missing by his family Jan. 13 after he had gone hiking in the Baldy Bowl Trail area of the San Gabriel Mountains that day.

A month mostly filled with successful sequels and franchise installments comes to an end with an unexpectedly promising original. Not wholly original, as “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is based on the 1974 table-top role-playing game which counts as its own genre. However, the picture is closest in spirit to “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”
It is an IP sell with plenty of Easter Eggs and in-jokes for fans of the brand. If only "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," an enjoyable fantasy-action romp, was actually the first-ever "D&d" movie. Unfortunately, it's not. That dubious distinction goes to 2000's "Dungeons & Dragons," a really weird anomaly of the early 2000s fantasy craze. Make no mistake – that film does not need a vulgar auteurist re-evaluation or even a defense, as it is a very bad movie filled with problematic character archetypes, terrible dialogue, and even worse CGI. You don't have to watch it to understand or enjoy "Honor Among Thieves," so unless you have some liquid assistance and some friends with you, we recommend you skip this in your "D&d" lore recap.
That being said, if you absolutely have to watch "Dungeons & Dragons," do it for one single reason: Jeremy Irons. Portraying the evil mage Profion, his entire character boils down to him just wanting to control the entire land for vague sociopolitical reasons.

Entertainment One (eOne) has tapped “John Wick” writer Derek Kolstad to develop a “Dungeons & Dragons” TV-series pitch.
Dungeons & Dragons, which has been adapted for the big-screen before, is a popular board game from the Hasbro-owned Wizards of the Coast. (Wizards of the Coast also created the popular Magic the Gathering card game.)
Following a $3.8 billion acquisition, Entertainment One is also now part of Hasbro, which knows a thing or two about board games.
In addition to this small-screen development project, which we are told by an insider with knowledge of the process is in the “very early stages,” eOne is also working with other writers on other D&d projects. One of those is a new “Dungeons & Dragons” film, which is being directed by Jonathan Goldstein and Jonathan Francis Daley.
As first reported by TheWrap, Kolstad co-wrote “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” series for Disney+. He is represented by APA,...

[Note: With High Fliers Films re-releasing The Rizen on VOD this week, here’s a reposting of our review from the films original DVD release back in early 2018]
The Rizen is a UK indie-horror film set in a black hallway during the early days of the Cold War in 1955. You can tell this a period piece by the handcrafted, vintage style black walls and black floors. If this movies set design got any darker it would write poetry and start cutting itself.
I had a hard time getting into this film before I even hit the play button. The title is The Rizen. No, not “the risen” as in “the dead has risen” if you’re referencing zombies, or “He has risen” if you’re referencing theological zombies.

Bruce Payne was a perfect bad guy in the 90’s. The persona he affected was just straight up malevolent, mean, arrogant, and straight to the point and in your face. In other words the guy was the kind of bad guy that would do what he said and not mince words. The trouble is that as with all bad guys he did need to get defeated. For the 90’s he was brutal, and the villainous roles he took on after that were just as brutal, but eventually his time kind of faded. In fact it seems that after his role

Horror was in a weird place in the early 1990s. Most of the big franchises of the ’80s had more or less run their course, and in their place were a handful of new “icons” that would be turned into franchises whether it was warranted or not: the Child’s Play movies continued to be a growing concern, as did Candyman and Hellraiser and Leprechaun. One attempt to launch a new franchise that never quite took was 1991’s Warlock, which inspired two sequels of varying quality before calling it quits. All three films are now gathered together on Blu-ray for the first time as part of the Warlock Collection, the latest in the Vestron Video Collector’s Series from Lionsgate.
The original Warlock is genuinely something special—maybe not a new classic, but certainly a really good version of what it is. It’s a film with an impressive...

Love them or hate them, low-budget British crime and gangster films will never die. I know some see these types of films as guilty pleasures, but I have a genuine soft spot and overall appreciation for them. They can’t all be winners (I’m looking at you Full English Breakfast!), every now and then you get a film like Age of Kill or Orthodox. When the snobs cry about these films being mindless or silly, they seem to forget that no matter how good or bad the film in question is, it’s a great way for talented people to begin a career in the world of film. Maybe people should stop complaining about how much Robert Downey Jr. makes in his Marvel outings and maybe focus their energy...

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...
Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.
Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.

Wesley Snipes will be hitting our scenes this summer in action sequel The Expendables 3. And if you are one of many people who’ve been wondering “where the hell has this guy been?” well the answer is: serving a three-year sentence for tax evasion. In fact, it was Snipes’ legal problems that forced him to turn down the role of Hale Caesar in the first Expendables film, a character that had been conceived and written especially for him. Snipes was not allowed to leave the United States without the court’s approval, and the role eventually went to Terry Crews.
Just before disappearing into jail in 2010, Snipes made Gallowwalkers, about a cursed gunslinger whose shooting victims turn into zombies; its poster tagline ‘Live by the gun. Die by the gun. Come back for more’ tells you all you need to know.

Danny Dyer is an actor who tends to take a lot of flak for his acting. In Vendetta I won’t say his performance is Oscar worthy but you get exactly what you expect, and that is Danny Dyer. He seems to lack emotion, or the ability to act it out. When playing a character who is meant to suppress all types of weakness and emotion, the performance actually fits.
Vendetta is a film that wants to be Death Wish, and that is a high level to fight for, I’d say it doesn’t get there, but in aiming so high it actually manages to have many good intensions. Dyer plays Jimmy Vickers, a “special ops interrogation officer” who returns home to find his parents have been tortured and murdered by a local gang.

From zombie outbreaks to food poisoning, here's our selection of the 10 unluckiest fictional airline companies in cinema...
You rarely see real-life airline companies in movies, and for good reason - planes in the movies are always being overrun by snakes, art thieves, the undead, and that actor who plays Hercule Poirot.
Film airline companies are so unlucky, in fact, that even the best efforts of Hollywood's finest actors, heart-throbs and action heroes - from Brad Pitt to Bruce Willis, and Jack Lemmon to Mark Hamill - can't stop their planes from dropping out of the sky or getting into some kind of mishap or other.
To this end, here's a far-from-exhaustive look at what we think are the 10 unluckiest airlines in cinema...

I really like Ethan Hawke as an actor. The guy seems to involve himself with some great film projects, which is what gives me hope that this new action thriller Getaway will be a decent film. Hawke plays a character named Brent, who is a former racecar driver with a badass Shelby Cobra. His wife is kidnapped, and to get her back he has to do everything that the kidnapper tells him to. It also stars Selena Gomez, Jon Voight, Rebecca Budig, and Bruce Payne.

If you did a double-take when you first heard that Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez were in a movie together, or raised your eyebrows when you then heard that the Getaway movie wasn’t about something involving angst-riddled teens and heart-wrenching drama… and, if you thought a selection of new images would clue you in to something beyond cars, explosions, and moody pictures of Hawke and Gomez very near each other… well, frankly, I’ve lost my train of thought.
However it all works out, this Getaway movie looks fantastic. There’s probably a really good reason that Gomez’ character has a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake for Hawke to steal, but… no, I’m kidding.
Still, it may be fun. Have a look at some hot new images, and get ready to choke on everything you ever said about Selena Gomez’ acting ability.

"The Place Beyond the Pines"
What's It About? In "A Place Beyond the Pines" Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") weaves together three vignettes starring Ryan Gosling as a bleach blonde, motorcycle-riding bank robber, Eva Mendes as a tough single mother, and Bradley Cooper as a conflicted cop. The first part of the film follows Luke (Gosling) as he robs banks to support his unexpected child and to win back the mother Romina (Mendes). Halfway through "Pines" breaks off to tell the story of Avery (Cooper), a wounded cop who discovers corruption in his department.
Why We're In: While "Pines" breaks off suddenly in various directions, the film's audacious screenplay and structure are what make it so powerful and compelling. Cianfrance's drama is one of novelistic proportions and definitely worth its long running time.

Exclusive Getaway Comic-Con Interview with Director Courtney Solomon Courtney Soloman has a knack for making small things big. As a director, he's just made his third film, Getaway, a driving thriller that stars Ethan Hawke, Jon Voight, and, wait for it, Selena Gomez. But he's been involved with dozens of low-to-mid-range budget films, turning out the sort of horror and action films that the major studios rarely focus on these days. It's a business model that pays off, and as a result, Getaway has ended up being one of the largest movies in his canon, and one that's getting a worldwide distribution deal from Warner Bros. Soloman sat down with Upcoming-Movies.com at this year's Comic-Con to talk about casting Ethan Hawke, turning a profit on smaller films, and why he decided to give Selena Gomez a grown-up role. Warner Bros. Pictures' Getaway opens in theaters on August 30th, 2013. Also on board Getaway,...
