The Phantom Menace marks the start of the prequels era of the Star Wars franchise and the film recently completed 25 years. Despite its mixed reception, the film is remembered for its villains, particularly the Sith Lord Darth Maul, who eventually became a fan-favorite character through an expanded focus in the spin-off media.

Actor Ray Park debuted as the menacing Sith apprentice Darth Maul in the first installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. However, Maul meets his untimely demise at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of The Phantom Menace. Given Maul’s interesting look and brief screen time, fans have clamored to see more of the character in the films.
Ray Park originated the role of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace.
During an interview, Park admitted to being eager for a return to the galaxy far, far away. The primary reason for Park’s reinvigorated interest in reprising the role of Darth Maul was due to the new lightsaber design of Kylo Ren, which debuted in The Force Awakens. Here is what Park had to say about Kylo Ren’s lightsaber design and his desire to return to Star Wars.

On May 19th, 1999, the world was taken back to a galaxy far, far away after a sixteen-year hiatus from the last film, Return of the Jedi. Ever since The Empire Strikes Back was dubbed “Episode V” this lead to many believing that we would one day see the origins of Darth Vader, the fall of the Jedi and the slow rise of the empire. And now that time had come.
The first episode in the prequel trilogy lets us see a young Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) being found by master Qui-Gon Jin (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and freed from slavery to become a Jedi. He also meets his future wife, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman). Meanwhile, from the shadows Darth Sidious (Ian McDirmis), and his apprentice Darth Maul (Ray Park), manipulate the galactic republic by causing a war on the plane of Naboo in an attempt to seize power.

To describe something in the Star Wars galaxy as divisive is merely to say that it exists. With each new movie or TV series that comes out, the fandom gets increasingly fractured, with factions picking sides and digging in on multiple fronts.

Okay, we all loved the original Star Wars trilogy. George Lucas’ unique vision defined the space opera genre and gave us some epic movies that we will love for years to come. But remember when the Prequel Trilogy came out? Sure, by the time the Revenge of the Sith came out, fans were more satisfied with the story, but do you remember how much hate was directed towards Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace when it first came out? And it wasn’t just Jar-Jar Binks that people hated – it was the whole concept and many parts of the story.
Yours truly personally liked the Prequel Trilogy and we on Fiction Horizon are quite happy with how well the three movies aged, as fans have been starting to appreciate these movies more and more in recent years, especially after Disney’s Sequel Trilogy. In light of that, Variety...

The public's consideration of George Lucas' 1999 film "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" has dipped and swerved like a roller coaster. Those of us who were alive in 1999 are likely astonished to have witnessed "Phantom Menace" go from being one of the most successful films of all time, to one of the most disappointing franchise movies of all time, to one of the most outwardly hated blockbusters of all time, to one of the most unjustly maligned films of all time, to finally being considered a vital (if clunky) part of a long-running sci-fi saga with its share of highs and lows.
In truth, "The Phantom Menace" is rather bad. Lucas' dialogue is dry and dull, his characters staid and bland. It's the stiffest, most mannered sci-fi blockbuster one might ever see, lacking in personality, wit, humor, fun, or excitement. The story of "The Phantom Menace" infamously surrounds...

George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise features several iconic villains, including Darth Vader, whose presence was integral to the success of the original trilogy of films. As a result, when Lucas decided to work on the prequel trilogy, he wanted to create an antagonistic force that could rival the on-screen presence of Vader.
Darth Maul was first introduced in 1999’s The Phantom Menace.
As a result, Lucas created the fan-favorite character of Darth Maul, who was introduced in the first prequel trilogy film. However, Maul was killed off unceremoniously at the end of the film. Nonetheless, Lucas eventually regretted the decision to kill off such a beloved and fascinating character. Here is what George Lucas has said about Darth Maul’s creation and the decision to kill him off.

George Lucas’ “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” has a clear set-up/pay-off as the reason for its existence: young, innocent child Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) will grow up to become Darth Vader, a manifestation of evil. The movie’s entire reason for existence is ultimately to introduce us to this child and make us think about how far we are from the fall of the Republic, and how the Empire will arise in only a generation. These were major stakes and not a bad place to get fans excited for the first new “Star Wars” movie in 16 years. And yet when “The Phantom Menace” arrived in theaters in 1999 it was met with either a mix of fans trying to convince themselves it was good (“‘Star Wars’ has always been corny!”) or outright disappointment.

Just like a prayer, the latest trailer for the highly anticipated "Deadpool & Wolverine" arrived this morning, showing off even more of Wade Wilson's first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If bringing the R-rated Merc with a Mouth into the Marvel Studios world wasn't enough, with all the naughtiness that entails, surely Hugh Jackman picking up Wolverine's claws again will seal the deal.
Of course, since "Deadpool & Wolverine" is bringing the characters from 20th Century Fox's universe of Marvel movies into the MCU, there are even more recognizable faces who will be popping up. Along with reports of Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Elektra and the appearance of Pyro in the first trailer for the movie, the latest batch of footage shows off some returning characters from previous "X-Men" movies. Perhaps even more interesting is where those characters appear in the trailer, especially when it comes...

Hasbro introduced the world to G.I. Joe as a series of action figures in the '60s. Originally as 12-inch figures, the line was successful for the toy company. But when the line was relaunched in the early '80s as smaller-scale figures complete with accessories, such as vehicles and playsets, the whole enterprise really took off. It led to a series of Marvel Comics adaptations, animated shows, and yes, big-budget feature films.
Paramount Pictures brought the "G.I. Joe" franchise to life in live-action beginning in 2009, and several films have been produced since. The "Star Wars" prequels changed the game for the franchise, for better and worse. For one, they interrogated the idea of the Jedi as noble warrior monks by making them misguided space cops. But it also forever changed the way we look at lightsaber fights.
The original trilogy had memorabe lightsaber duels and cool stunts, of course, but the prequels reinvented them by turning the duels from samurai-esque, Mexican stand-offs into Shaolin monk fights with elaborate acrobatics. Characters jump around, twirl, and swing their lightsabers around with great intensity. Even if the sequel trilogy didn't really do all the acrobatics, they also featured more elaborate stunts in the duels (like the fantastic throne room fight in "The Last Jedi").
Unsurprisingly, making those stunts wasn't an easy task. In the official "The Making of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace" book by Laurent Bouzereau and Jody Duncan, stunt coordinator Nick Gillard explained that,...

It's no secret that George Lucas' original vision for "Star Wars" was heavily influenced by Japanese cinema, specifically the samurai, or chanbara, sword-fighting films of his youth. "Seven Samurai" and, of course, Akira Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" were direct inspirations for "A New Hope" and the misadventures of C-3Po and R2-D2. Any student who has studied martial arts will also be able to see a direct link between the ancient techniques of Japanese swordsmanship and the fighting style of Jedi Knights throughout the entire saga. Beginning with the classic duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader aboard the Death Star, the original film's stunt coordinator Peter Diamond incorporated the basic strikes, parries, and blocks that are taught in kendo. Even the concept of balancing one's internal Qi ("chi") energy became the foundation for the Force.

For those not in the know, they are also one of the services that pays filmmakers the best and are very open to smaller budget films. They do present the films with ads, but that is a small price to pay for a great selection of fun films. Scrolling their offerings by genre is also the closest one can get to the video store experience of yesteryears. Disney promised a new “Star Wars” movie every year after it acquired Lucasfilm, but the big-screen saga seemed to hit a pause with “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.” But while many would call themselves “Star Wars” fans, even they will admit that the movies in the saga are by no means created equal.
In reverse order, here is a rundown of the best and worst that these films have to offer.
11. “Episode I: The Phantom Menace”
We waited 16 years for George Lucas to return to this universe, and what did we get? Trade routes and political intrigue, blood tests for the Force, and perhaps worst of all, Jar Jar Binks. “Menace” isn’t terrible because it’s a kid’s movie; it’s terrible because it’s a terrible kids movie.
Highlight: The light-saber battle between Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Darth Maul (Ray Park) – they’re the two...

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 1, "The Apostate."
In the same way Daniel Craig made a stealth cameo as a Stormtrooper in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Mandalorian" has already featured more than one famous guest star who went unrecognizable because of costuming or makeup. This goes back to the series premiere when comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Horatio Sanz played Mando's first bounty, the blue alien Mythrol. The season 3 premiere also sneaks in "Sweet Tooth" star Nonso Anozie as the seaweed-headed pirate king, Gorian Shard. Even Din Djarin himself, voiced by Anozie's fellow "Game of Thrones" alum Pedro Pascal, spends most of the series under a helmet. The very removal of that helmet gets him excommunicated from the Way of the Mandalore, hence the episode title, "The Apostate."

“G.I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained, special mission force.” So declares the voiceover in the theme song for G.I. Joe, the cartoon show that dominated after-school televisions in the 1980s. And by that criteria, Channing Tatum seems like the perfect choice to play Duke, leader of the Joes. Is he highly trained? Of course! Have you seen Step Up or Magic Mike? Is he daring? Anyone who caught his cameo in This is the End would give a resounding “yes”!
But the song also tells us that G.I. Joe “never gives up” and is “always there.” On that account, Tatum might fall a little bit short.
Recently, Tatum agreed to strap on a lie detector and answer questions for Vanity Fair. And to test the actor’s resolve, Vanity Fair went right for the tough questions: “You played Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Calling all Marilyn enthusiasts: Take home a part of Marilyn Monroe’s history this December.
The ultimate holiday present for cinephiles kicks off December 17 with the Turner Classic Movies partnership with Los Angeles auction house Julien’s Auctions to host the “Icons & Idols: Hollywood” sale.
A black Marilyn Monroe wool cocktail dress will be part of the auction, with an estimated price tag of 40,000 to 60,000, as well as the white sleeveless sundress worn by Monroe in the series of photographs alongside husband Arthur Miller in 1956. Stunt coordinators and performers are an essential part of the film industry. Someone has to block, stage, and perform the larger-than-life stunts that make the "movie magic" happen! Computer-generated imagery can't match the authenticity of the real thing. Even if special effects augment a sequence, it helps a scene's believability if it's (at least) partially shot with real stunts.
Lately, there has been an ongoing movement to show appreciation for stunt artists -- like when Helen Mirren told Indiewire that the Academy Awards should honor the craft. Currently, the Oscars don't have a category for best stunts, best stunt coordination, best stunt directing, or best stunt ensemble. Although the Screen Actors Guild Awards have awards in these categories, other televised award shows like the BAFTAs still don't recognize these talented professionals.

Lightsaber combat is an integral part of Star Wars DNA. The franchise is an amalgamation of many different genres, and a "laser sword" combines the futurism of science fiction with the chivalry of medieval knights. Even if it doesn't feel as exciting today as it was in 1977, Obi-Wan Kenobi's (Sir Alec Guinness) duel with Darth Vader (David Prowse) in "Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope" established a key aspect of the saga. Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) battles with Vader in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" are more epic, and conclude with shocking plot twists. Lightsaber combat grew more exciting thanks to the Star Wars prequel trilogy, where Jedi Knights wielded their weapons when they were supposedly at the height of their powers.

Qui-Gon Jinn has returned.
Star Wars fans were floored on Wednesday when Liam Neeson made his return to a galaxy far, far away in the series finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+.
In the closing moments of the Star Wars miniseries, Neeson returned to the franchise for the first time since Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999) as Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (in live-action form; he also voiced the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars). It had been teased since the premiere episode that Qui-Gon might make an appearance, but there was never any guarantee. And given how much time has passed since Neeson last played the character, it was hard to determine his interest in donning his Jedi robes one more time.
The Academy Award-nominated actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he decided to return to the franchise for a number of reasons.

[This story contains spoilers for the series finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi.]
It took a lot of patience on the part of viewers, but Obi-Wan Kenobi delivered on a season-long tease fans hoped would come to fruition.
Qui-Gon Jinn, played by Liam Neeson, returned to the franchise for the first time since 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. The moment was shorter than most would have liked, given how much time has passed since the audience last saw Obi-Wan’s (Ewan McGregor) master, but all the emotions over seeing him once more were there.
Since the premiere episode of the six-part Disney+ Star Wars miniseries, there were teases that Qui-Gon might make an appearance, as Obi-Wan tried to connect with him a number of times throughout the adventure, but without any luck.
It was only in the very last moments of the series that Obi-Wan was finally able to see Qui-Gon’s Force ghost.

The “Star Wars” prequels may not be everyone’s cup of tea — or really anyone’s cup of tea, at least for awhile there — but they are certainly going to be important to the story of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” when it hits Disney+ this week. So…do you remember what happened in those films?
No one could fault you if the answer is no. It’s been 17 years since “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” was released in theaters, and like we said, those movies weren’t everyone’s favorites. They’ve had a bit of a reassessment in recent years, with the franchise stars even marveling at the love they’re receiving now, versus back in their premiere days.
But of course, not everyone is ready to willingly revisit the prequels just yet. If you’re here, you’re likely one of those people. And that’s Ok; we’ve got you.

"The Phantom Menace" isn't the most popular "Star Wars" movie, and in a lot of ways, the long-awaited prequel and first theatrical series entry since "Return of the Jedi" wound up being upstaged by "The Matrix" and its revolutionary action techniques in 1999. However, despite its many flaws, "Phantom Menace" does feature one of the most memorable lightsaber fights in "Star Wars" history. It's the two-on-one duel that pits the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), against the double-bladed lightsaber-wielding Sith Lord Darth Maul (Ray Park).

It’s tough to know who to believe sometimes when one source is saying that an individual was on a certain set and another source says they were never there. The idea was that Ray Park was coming back to take on the role of Darth Maul in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that’s coming to Disney+, while another source is rumored to have said that Park was never on the set in the first place. But cutting Darth Maul from the series entirely feels like a good idea even if seeing him tangle with Kenobi one more time might have been

It’s no secret that Lucasfilm’s next big Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, will be filled to the brim with nostalgia and fan service. The first trailer confirmed the show will bring back Luke Skywalker, Uncle Ben, and Aunt Beru on Tatooine; the Inquisitors from the Rebels animated series will be hunting Kenobi; and Darth Vader is back for revenge. And there are plenty of rumors and leaks out there suggesting that these are only a fraction of the cameos and callbacks in this six-episode limited series. Obi-Wan Kenobi will undoubtedly deliver the easter egg-y goodness Disney fans crave.
Bringing back these elements from the Prequel and A New Hope eras of Star Wars is a no-brainer, considering the Disney+ show takes place in between the two — 10 years after Revenge of the Sith but 9 years before the Original Trilogy. Like Rebels before it, Obi-Wan Kenobi is in the unique...

As excitement builds for “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” new information continues to reveal that the Disney+ limited series was once supposed to look very different. Following last week’s news that the first batch of scripts from writer Hossein Amini were scrapped in favor of a more uplifting story, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the show was also set to feature legendary “Star Wars” villain Darth Maul. However, the character ended up being a casualty of the show’s creative overhaul, when pre-production was halted in 2020 and writer Joby Harold was brought in to craft a new story.
Original actor Ray Park (who played Darth Maul in 1999’s “The Phantom Menace”) had signed on to reprise his role as the Sith Lord, according to multiple sources in the article. In the recent past of the Star Wars franchise, the screens have gotten smaller and so has its galaxy. Sorry to break out a cliche, but Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines a "double-edged sword" as "something that has or can have both favorable and unfavorable consequences." Going by this definition, the Disney era of "Star Wars" is the living embodiment of a double-edged sword. It's given us some good moments and bad moments, and now it's given us a glimpse of an unused double-sided lightsaber.
Darth Maul (Ray Park) first brandished the double-sided lightsaber in "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace," but if you remember, the evil version of Rey (Daisy Ridley) had her own red version of one that she unfolded in "Star Wars: The Rise of...

At the box office, “Snake Eyes” is ringing true to its moniker.
The latest “G.I. Joe” installment, an origin story starring Henry Golding of “Crazy Rich Asians” fame, fell short of expectations, collecting a paltry $13.3 million in its first three days in North American theaters. Those ticket sales put “Snake Eyes” in second place on domestic charts, behind M. Night Shyamalan’s mind-bending thriller “Old” and its $16.5 million debut. It’s an embarrassing start for “Snake Eyes,” which cost $88 million to produce, not including the many millions spent on global marketing. It also illustrates the limits of franchise filmmaking at a time when studios are always on the hunt for the next big thing.
Unfortunately for Paramount Pictures and director Robert Schwentke, unfavorable reviews didn’t help elevate the profile of a reboot to a long-in-the-tooth series that already wasn’t particularly beloved by audiences. “Snake Eyes” has a 42% on...
