Barbara Rush, the classy yet largely unheralded leading lady who sparkled in the 1950s melodramas Magnificent Obsession, Bigger Than Life and The Young Philadelphians, has died. She was 97.
Rush, a regular on the fifth and final season of ABC’s Peyton Place and a favorite of sci-fi fans thanks to her work in When Worlds Collide (1951) and It Came From Outer Space (1953), died Sunday in Westlake Village, her daughter, Fox News senior correspondent Claudia Cowan, announced.
“My wonderful mother passed away peacefully at 5:28 this evening. I was with her this morning and know she was waiting for me to return home safely to transition,” Cowan said. “It’s fitting she chose to leave on Easter as it was one of her favorite holidays and now, of course, Easter will have a deeper significance for me and my family.”

What is it about small towns tucked away far from the bustling streets that is so laden with nostalgia? Perhaps it is the quaint, simple quality of life that defines existence in these spaces, or simply a case of looking back at one's past with rose-tinted glasses. "Valley of the Shadow," the third episode in the fourth season of "The Twilight Zone," examines a town named Peaceful Valley, where a reporter named Phillip Redfield (Ed Nelson) gets lost. However, Phillip's experiences in the town are far from pleasant — he stumbles upon life-altering secrets and is rendered a prisoner with almost no way out. Once Phillip learns that he can steal a technological formula that can make the world a better place, he is faced with obstacles that are designed to test his heart and his intentions as a seemingly well-meaning human being.

Vintage film restoration and distribution company Film Masters continues its tribute to the pope of pop cinema, Roger Corman, with the third installment of The Filmgroup series on Blu-ray and DVD, The Devil’s Partner, available 16th January 2024.
Corman and his brother, Gene, founded The Filmgroup to distribute their own films. While the company did produce the majority of its films, including the cult classic Creature From The Haunted Sea, it also occasionally acquired projects by other filmmakers, as is the case with The Devil’s Partner (1961). From director Charles R. Rondeau, the film is a macabre tale of an elderly man who regains his youth after making a deal with the devil. During the summer and fall of 1961, the two films were often paired as a double feature.

Directed by Bruno VeSota and produced by Roger Corman and star Ed Nelson, this six-day production has a can-do attitude that’s difficult to dismiss. Nelson plays a scientist investigating space parasites that are turning his friends into mind-controlled killers—one of those zombies is played by Leonard Nimoy. Being a Corman production it features a nifty title sequence by Robert Balser and unforgettable poster art by Albert Kallis.

They’re after you, and your wives and children! This Corman/VeSota/Ed Nelson shocker with the excellent poster is a Robert Heinlein knockoff that can’t quite sustain the paranoid pitch of other ‘parasitic possession’ sci-fi horror epics. One of the cheapest of the drive-in cheapies, it remains a must-see title just for the audacity of its ad campaign, and a random moment or two of spooky serendipity. Don’t get your hopes up if you’re coming to see Leonard Nimoy’s performance — unless his voice is enough to satisfy.

Walter Mirisch’s slam-bang, eardrum-pounding Sensurround stock footage orgy for the Centennial Year gathers an impressive lineup of big stars to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s biggest aircraft carrier battle: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune. Director Jack Smight manages the talky, exposition-laden account of a sprawling, complicated battle rather well, at least in terms of clarity. What is unwatchable pan-scanned on TV isn’t half bad for fans of big-scale war movies. Pi gives us an approximation of Sensurround (I think), and also John Ford’s short subject The Battle of Midway from 1942.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where I’m thrilled to be talking to one of the great voices working in horror journalism today, Terry Mesnard. Be it through his website Gayly Dreadful or through Scarred for Life, the podcast he co-hosts with Marybeth McAndrews, Mesnard’s analysis is always intelligent, deliberate, and playful.
Not surprisingly, before nominating a film to discuss, Mesnard did a little research to look at the movies I’ve covered in past installments. Given that so far I’ve covered films ranging from Brian De Palma staples to classic J-horror to queer giallo flicks, Mesnard had just one thought: “Bryan really needs to class up his column.” Enter the 1991 James Cummins horror comedy The Boneyard, a film that I had not even heard of before Mesnard suggested it. But when I saw the cover, featuring what appeared to be some sort of mutant poodle,...

Roger Corman began his boom year of 1957 with a marvelous bit of ‘way-out’ sci-fi — a ‘Tidal Wave of Terror’ no less. This note just arrived from Donald J.’s Seafood Emporium: “You puny, dunderheaded humans, don’t let the campy title fool you! Soon you will be ‘absorbed’ into our crabby super-mentalities, heh heh heh. We atom-age crustaceans are made of electric anti-matter — it’s incredible! Our telepathy is the best telepathy ever — everybody says so! It is what it is!” The new Blu-ray will charm fans seeking prime ‘fifties monster nirvana.

Roger Corman’s ‘sick sick sick!’ horror comedy is still a delight, and Olive’s Signature edition accompanies it with some excellent Elijah Drenner extras, including a video interview with the beloved star Dick Miller. Walter Paisley is the patron saint of underachieving artists everywhere, and this special edition has director Corman and writer Charles B. Griffith on tap to sing his praises. Robert Heinlein’s frighteningly brilliant sci-fi horror concept spawned an entire generation of biological invasions from outer space. Stuart Orme’s faithful, authorized adaptation has a lot going for it, including sensationally good, gloppy special makeup effects, and a commanding performance from a dour, authoritative Donald Sutherland.

Roger Corman’s crew of associates must have had some pretty wild times in the 1950’s, scraping around Hollywood and Venice Beach trying to bust into the film business. Perhaps these semi-bohemians stimulated writer Charles Griffith’s cynical humor gland, for the first modern black comedy feature in a horror vein became an amazing low budget ‘sick’ accomplishment for the uniquely creative Corman.

Creepy kids, am I right? The horror landscape has been littered with them as far back as The Bad Seed (1956). Every once in awhile TV too would trot out the killer tots in hopes of alluring viewers with no-good imps and smiling, murderous waifs. One such early effort is A Little Game (1971), an ABC Movie of the Week thriller that leans heavily on the psychology behind stepparent-child relations.
Originally broadcast on Saturday, October 30th, A Little Game faced off against the Top Ten rated The Mary Tyler Moore Show on CBS and the NBC Saturday Night at the Movies, but held its own due to the already strong ABC brand. The TV movie at this point was a staple of their network, and A Little Game adds the luster it was accumulating.

Shirley Jones Movies: Innocent virgins and sex workers galore (photo: Shirley Jones and Burt Lancaster in ‘Elmer Gantry’) (See previous post: “Shirley Jones: From Book to Movies.”) I haven’t watched The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), a comedy Western directed by Gene Kelly, and starring 62-year-old James Stewart as a cowpoke who inherits an establishment that turns out to be a popular house of prostitution. Henry Fonda plays Stewart’s partner. And I’m sure Shirley Jones, as one of the sex workers, looks lovely in the film. Hopefully, director Kelly gave this likable, talented actress the chance to do more than just stand around looking pretty. But then again … For all purposes, The Cheyenne Social Club ended Shirley Jones’ film stardom; that same year she turned to TV and The Partridge Family. Jones would return to films only nine years later, as one of several stars (among them Michael Caine,...

Crabs attack Stills We Love in a double-photo feature!
It’s Attack of the Crab Monsters today, folks. And we’ve got two photos for you. Best get to it. Just look:

It’s always odd to see color photos from movies that have etched themselves into our memories in black and white. Here’s a scuba-geared Pamela Duncan on location in Bronson Canyon for one of Roger Corman and Chuck Griffith’s most durable creature features, Attack of the Crab Monsters. The state of the art Telepathic Talking Crab Puppeteers are working their magic in what may be a rehearsal but is more likely a test to see if the wires will hold. The guy on the right looks like he might be Ed Nelson, who was underneath the Crab whenever it had to move, and claims Jack Nicholson was hanging around hoping to get in on the gig.

When one thinks of Steve McQueen, the last thing that pops into that person’s mind is the iconic actor acting like a loveable oaf, opposite someone like Jackie Gleason. However, that’s exactly the case when it comes to the underrated gem of a comedy, Soldier In The Rain.
A 1963 film produced by Pink Panther helmer and comedy giant Blake Edwwards, Soldier stars Gleason and McQueen, and is based on the William Goldman novel of the same name. Helmed by Ralph Nelson (best known for films like Requiem For A Heavyweight, also starring Gleason), the film itself is arguably better known for being released during the same week as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but it’s also an absolutely wonderful comedy, that still garners laugh after laugh to this day.

The latest is the seemingly endless string of irresistible DVD collections comes from the good folks at Timeless Video, who have distinguished themselves with some first-class releases of vintage TV series. The latest is their most impressive yet: the 1950s crime series M Squad which helped groom Lee Marvin from supporting actor to leading man presence. Marvin is the stalwart Lt. Frank Ballinger, a Chicago cop who is so unrelentingly serious that he makes Jack Webb look like Richard Simmons. The series was part of the wave of crime shows that flooded the networks during this era, and M Squad was one of the best. The show ran three seasons and was compromised only by the half-hour time running time which made for some abbreviated storylines. The series is a gem in terms of the kinds of cornball cliches that have become part of our pop culture. I always assumed...
