Despite not having made a film of his own since 2013 (the under-appreciated “Go for Sisters”), John Sayles is having quite the year. In January, his 1996 neo-Western mystery film “Lone Star” entered the Criterion Collection with a 4K Uhd edition that features interviews with director of photography Stuart Dryburgh, as well as an interview with Sayles himself conducted by “El Norte” director Gregory Nava.
Then in April, his largely unavailable 1991 inner-city saga “City of Hope” received the Blu-ray release many fans had been pining for since a restoration was screened at Sundance in 2016 for the 25th anniversary. Adding to this newfound availability of quality copies of his work, a large number of Sayles’ films are currently streaming for free on apps like Tubi, Kanopy, and Pluto TV, as well as cost-based apps like AMC+, Starz, and Prime Video.

With the 96th Academy Awards in the history books, it’s time to become obsessed over the 77th Tony Awards. Nominations are April 30th with the awards set to air on CBS on June 16 from Lincoln Center. Among the contenders for Tony nominations are many musicals based on movies including “Back to the Future,’ “The Notebook,” “Water for Elephants” and “The Outsiders”: high profile revivals such as Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” with Jeremy Strong; “Cabaret” with Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne and the Who’s “Tommy”; imports from London and transfers from off-Broadway.
Do you remember the Tony landscape 50 years ago? The 28th annual honors took place April 21, 1974, at the Shubert Theater and aired on ABC. And to say it was a star-studded affair is something of an understatement. Robert Preston, Peter Falk, Cicely Tyson, Florence Henderson hosted; presenters included Al Pacino –-let’s hope he had better...

Giancarlo Esposito cries "every time" at a particular scene in 'It's A Wonderful Life' as it reminds him of when he we was bankrupt. The 65-year-old actor - who is best known for playing Gus Fring in the AMC crime drama series 'Breaking Bad' and its prequel series 'Better Call Saul' - lost all his money following the 2008 financial crisis, and when the same happens to George Bailey (James Stewart) in the 1946 classic Christmas supernatural drama, it sets him off.He told the April issue of Empire magazine: "It's A Wonderful Life. It's always the moment where [George Bailey] realises that the money's gone. It gets me in my heart. It hit me on a very personal note before I went bankrupt [in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis], and then it resounded more afterwards. I have a poster in my closet that my daughter made; the words of Gustavo Fring, to remind...

The expansion of free streaming services continues unabated. On Wednesday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) shared some details on its ever-expanding reach and upcoming original programming at the Iab Newfronts in New York. A month after launching a new advertising sales division known as Crackle Connex, Csse reports having an audience of over 80 million monthly active users, up 100% year-over-year.
This rapid expansion was aided by the company acquiring Redbox last May, giving Csse an out-of-home presence, but the majority of the growth comes from the addition of over 160 channels on the company’s free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) and ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) services.

Csse also benefited from the addition of Crackle and Redbox buttons on [Vizio Smart TV] remotes, making the free streaming services even easier to access and front-of-mind for viewers. Thanks to new deals with the likes of Crunchyroll, Funimation, Vidgo,...

One of the most underrated masterstrokes of James Cameron's "The Terminator," and this is a film stuffed with masterstrokes, was his decision to have Dr. Peter Silberman exit that Los Angeles police station prior to the title cyborg's murderous rampage. It's not that we wanted the high-handed criminal psychologist -- who wrongfully shrugs off Kyle Reese's (Michael Biehn) claim that he was sent back in time from a post-apocalyptic future to protect Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) from a robotic assassin -- to survive the carnage. We just didn't know at the time that he would wind up being one of the series' most delectably despicable characters.
Silberman was portrayed by the incredibly prolific character actor Earl Boen, who passed away yesterday from lung cancer at the age of 81. He was very much a "that guy," i.e. an unforgettable face who turned up in countless films and television shows,...

In alignment with Gold Derby’s odds, Colman Domingo was just awarded the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy for Best Drama Guest Actor for his work on HBO’s “Euphoria.” This is the 52-year-old performer’s first Emmy nomination and win following a quarter century’s worth of small screen credits.
With the exception of “Ozark” guest Tom Pelphrey, all of Domingo’s challengers hailed from the most-nominated program of the year: “Succession.” The quartet of men who earned notices for making non-regular appearances during that show’s third season were Adrien Brody, James Cromwell, Arian Moayed and Alexander Skarsgård. Cromwell was the only returning Best Drama Guest Actor nominee in the bunch, having previously been recognized for “ER” (2001), “Six Feet Under” (2003) and “Succession” (2020).

Domingo was given this honor based on his brief yet powerful performance in the second-season “Euphoria” episode “Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys.

James Cameron's 1991 ultra-blockbuster "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" bears some of the usual logical inconsistencies that will come baked into any time travel story, but its premise is easy enough to wrap one's head around. In the future, human beings will invent artificial intelligence in the form of a computer system called Skynet. Resenting humanity, Skynet will immediately wage war on humanity, starting with the explosion of a nuclear bomb on August 29, 1997. By 2029, Earth will be a machine-driven wasteland with the planet's scant human survivors waging a ground war with an army of metallic robot skeleton warriors called Terminators.
In the 1984 film "The Terminator," Skynet, losing the war, manages to send one of its Terminators (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back in time in order to murder Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) who is destined to give birth to a boy named John who will grow up to lead the human resistance. Sarah will...

When Carol Burnett was announced as being a guest star in the final season of “Better Call Saul,” awards pundits everywhere had the same thought: would she be the one to finally break the show’s Emmy curse? Indeed, the AMC drama is 0-39 at the Emmys so far and has seven more nominations this year. However, there’s a wacky Emmy rule you may not know about that prevents Burnett from earning a guest actress nomination at next year’s ceremony.
The Emmy rule in question states that “only performers appearing in less than 50 of the eligible episodes can submit in the Guest Performer categories.” What does that mean in layman’s terms? “Better Call Saul” split up its sixth and final season into two parts, with episodes 1-7 competing at the current 2022 Emmys and episodes 8-13 competing at the 2023 Emmys. Burnett has so far appeared in three episodes...

In 2019, Billy Porter made history as the first openly gay Black man to win a Primetime Emmy for acting. Prior to his Best Drama Actor victory for “Pose,” the only such nominee across all performance categories had been Tituss Burgess, who received his first of four supporting bids for the sitcom “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” in 2015. Now, two years after limited series lead Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood”) joined this groundbreaking group, newest member Colman Domingo has a shot at emulating Porter by taking the gold for his guest work on the HBO drama series “Euphoria.”
To date, Domingo has appeared in eight episodes of “Euphoria” as recovering alcoholic and drug addict Ali Muhammad. The second-season installment for which he is nominated, “Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys,” involves Muhammad and his Narcotics Anonymous sponsee, Rue Bennett (Zendaya), temporarily parting ways after she crudely shirks his friendship. Fox is clearing out some more series as it plans for the 2022-23 TV season.
The latest cancellations come in the form of freshman drama Our Kind of People and freshman comedy Pivoting. Our Kind of People launched in the fall with an A+ cast consisting of Yaya DaCosta, Joe Morton, and Morris Chestnut.
It was a sudsy primetime soap created by former mixed-ish showrunner Karin Gist and executive-produced by Empire's Lee Daniels.
The series didn't get the warmest of welcomes from viewers, averaging 1.3 million viewers and a 0.3 rating, coming in just ahead of the already canceled Big Leap.
While the numbers were far below what the network expected, it was a consistent performer, which can help shows eke out a renewal in this day and age.
A recent report from Deadline said that the series was a strong performer on the Fox-owned Tubi, which gave the network pause when it was considering canceling it.

“In a world of ones and zeroes, you are the absolute master.” So declares the late Dr. Silas Stone (Joe Morton) to his son Victor (Ray Fisher) aka Cyborg in Justice League. Thanks to Silas’s cutting-edge technology and some help from a Mother Box, Cyborg has not only super-strength but also complete control over the internet. “No firewall can stop you, no encryption can defy you,” Silas intones via tape recorder.

Jack Huston of “Boardwalk Empire” and “House of Gucci” has been cast as the pivotal and mysterious character Lasher in AMC’s “Mayfair Witches” series, the cabler announced on Friday. The series is based on the Mayfair trilogy by “Interview With the Vampire” author Anne Rice.
Lasher is a shape-shifting demon who has been linked to the family of witches for generations after being summoned in the 1600s. Rice described him as “a slim, pale, elegant figure with dark eyes and dark hair and a hypnotically seductive power over any of [the Mayfairs] reckless enough to entertain him.”
The character first appeared in Rice’s novel “The Witching Hour” in 1990, which was followed by 1993’s “Lasher” and 1994’s “Taltos.” He was voiced by Joe Morton in the 2000 audiobook.

Not too many child actors have such an auspicious career start as DeVaughn Nixon. Nixon was eight years old in 1991 when he played Danny Dyson — the son of Myles Dyson, who inadvertently brings upon the apocalypse in “Terminator 2”. Nixon would follow up just one year later playing Whitney Houston’s son, Fletcher, in “The Bodyguard”.
“’The Bodyguard’ was incredible for me honestly, because it was the first time I had ever seen snow,” Nixon said. “We filmed in Lake Tahoe. I vividly remember Whitney was very religious, she read me Bible verses and sang to me.”
After roles in “Snowfall,” “Marvel’s Runaways,” and “Secret Life of The American Teenager,” Nixon is playing the role of a lifetime as Nixon’s own real-life father, NBA player Norm Nixon, in the HBO drama “Winning Time.” The series chronicles the rise of the L.A. Lakers during the 1980s under the leadership of team owner Jerry Buss.

Insecure received early awards for supporting actress Natasha Rothwell, in addition to Issa Rae’s win for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. By the end of the night, Rae also picked up trophies for Actress in a Comedy and Outstanding Comedy Series.

It almost felt like an episode of The Bachelorette when not one but two men proposed to Angela on Tuesday’s Season 1 finale of Our Kind of People.
We’ll get to whom she chose in a bit, but first, let’s unpack all of the wacky things that happened along the way. For starters, Taylor broke up with Nikki to be with Lauren, causing Nikki to act super emotional and borderline insane. What’s even crazier is that Taylor didn’t say why they needed to break up before Nikki stormed off and wondered if she would ever love again.

As Season 1 of Fox’s Our Kind of People comes to an end, answers have arrived regarding many of the show’s biggest mysteries. Mainly: What role did Teddy Franklin (Joe Morton) play in his former lover Eve’s downfall? It’s complicated.
In Tuesday night’s episode, “Kiss It Up To God,” Eve and Teddy’s love child Angela Vaughn (Yaya DaCosta) and her half-sister Leah Franklin Dupont (Nadine Ellis) teamed to get a confession from their father Teddy about a gun that connects them all to the events that took place at the 1984 Grand Illumination Ball that ended with Teddy’s brother Louis Franklin (B.J. Britt) dead, Leah’s mother Rose (Susan Spain) traumatized, and Eve arrested on a drug charge.
“I loved Eve, very deeply,” Teddy revealed in the finale.

2021 was an excellent year for TV.

Franchise fever has come to fruition this fall. A surprisingly solid launch for the 2021-22 season for the broadcast networks has yielded two series renewals so far and even more important, signs of life in primetime. Series launches with built-in franchises have performed well, but viewers are also checking out wholly original concepts.
CBS has given full-season orders to freshman dramas “NCIS: Hawai’i” and “FBI: International” after both shows won their respective time slots in their first week on air in Nielsen live-plus-7 ratings. The Sept. 20 fall season launch week was a predictably busy period, seeing a bevy of dramas, comedies and game shows drop debuts, as well as the return of a couple of familiar titles.
Per Nielsen, “NCIS: Hawai’i” won its 10 p.m. Monday time slot in viewers, averaging 9.3 million thus far, and it has improved the network’s performance in the slot by a whopping 381% from the same period last year.

The series attempts to be unapologetically Black, basking in Black Excellence, thrusting us into the glam and glitzy world of the Black elite in Martha's Vineyard.
It has all that delicious rags to riches, haves and have nots appeal, with Angela and the Vaughns immersing themselves amongst the saditty, hoping to carve out a place of their own.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Tuesday’s series premiere of Fox’s “Our Kind of People.”)
Lee Daniels and Karin Gist’s new Fox drama “Our Kind of People” dropped a mother of a bombshell on its protagonist in the series premiere Tuesday. In the episode, single mother and Black haircare entrepreneur Angela Vaughn (played by star Yaya DaCosta) found out the long-hidden identity of her father: business mogul Teddy Franklin (Joe Morton).
Adding a twist of the knife to that revelation — a secret which Angela’s deceased mother took to her grave — is the fact that Teddy’s daughter, Leah Franklin Dupont (Nadine Ellis), has had it out for Angela since the moment she and her daughter, Nikki (Alana Bright), moved to the Black elite community of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard to open a popup salon and pursue a grant for small business owners from the Franklin family’s Franklin Holdings.

Did you bring your scorecard, honey? Because Our Kind of People throws so much shade and clapback that you probably lost count of who had the upper hand.
Angela (Yaya DeCosta) and them weren’t playing the dozens when Karin Gist and Lee Daniels’ rich-and-wicked drama premiered Tuesday on Fox, but they might as well have been. There were so many people putting other people in their place, it felt like a Real Housewives dramatization.
