Which do you prefer when it comes to crazy, maniacal, downright dirty and savage families looking to chop up some grade-a human flesh? I guess, it all comes down to personal preference, but isn’t preference drawing a fine line between comparing and downgrading the other? Well, you’re in luck, because another horror movie rip-off is in tow, and this time it brings the flesh by the pound, or pounds? I think it’s the latter. Today, we’re going to be discussing, a little bit of comparing, and see who claims victor, while the other takes the road less traveled in 2003’s Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here), and Tobe Hooper’s 1986 follow-up in the Leatherface mythos, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (watch it Here). Both are delightful, both are cult classics, ad both stack up well against each other. But who takes the cake,...

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just made its way online, and with this one we’re celebrating the birthday of the late, great director Tobe Hooper by looking at one of his more underrated horror films: the 2004 release Toolbox Murders (watch it Here)! You can hear all about it in the embed above.
Toolbox Murders is technically a remake of the 1978 film The Toolbox Murders, but it’s very different from the source material. Written by Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, this one has the following synopsis: Young couple Steve and Nell move into a once fashionable, but now decaying, apartment block in Los Angeles, and soon realise that a number of young female residents have met unusually violent deaths. Before long, Nell makes some disturbing discoveries about the building’s manager and her fellow tenants.
The film stars Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Marco Rodríguez, Rance Howard,...

October has been a pretty exciting month: we celebrated our 250th episode of the podcast with Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, then tackled one of Jason Voorhees’ best entries with Friday the 13th Part 2 before getting real serious with Bryan Singer’s Apt Pupil.
We’re closing out the month with a seasonally appropriate film: Rob Zombie‘s 2009 return to the Halloween franchise, Halloween II. Important note of distinction, however, we’re talking about the Unrated Director’s Cut.
In the film, it’s been two years since Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) faced down Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) but she’s still suffering from serious Ptsd. Despite Annie (Danielle Harris) and Sheriff Brackett’s (Brad Dourif) claims that she’s safe, Laurie is spiraling as Halloween approaches.
Not helping matters is Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), who has written an insensitive new book about the murders. As Michael returns to finish what he began,...

I think it’s pretty safe to assume that no one had exceptionally high hopes for Peacock’s take on Twisted Metal. A comedic adaptation of an over-the-top car combat franchise that hasn’t seen a new entry in over twelve years – it feels like everything was stacked against this odd little streaming project from the very start. Thankfully, the end result was a surprisingly entertaining show that managed to combine original storytelling with enough nods to the original source material to keep both fans and newcomers consistently engaged.
That being said, there’s clearly still room for improvement here, which is something that the show itself acknowledges towards the end of the experience with its tease of a more game-accurate second season. With that in mind, we’ve come up with this list highlighting six reasons why we’re excited for a second season of Twisted Metal, as while...

Love him or hate him, Rob Zombie has become one of the prominent and unique voices in the modern horror landscape. His style is immediately recognizable, his choices in aesthetics, casting, and music practically codified. I say this not to criticize Zombie; he’s one of my favorite current filmmakers, and I like or love nearly every single one of his movies.
With two of his films celebrating an anniversary this year – Lords of Salem turns 10, House of 1000 Corpses turns 20 – it seemed like the right time to revisit his filmmaking career so far.
Today we’re ranking Rob Zombie’s entire live action filmography to date…

Before becoming one of the most divisive filmmakers in horror with the likes of Halloween and The Munsters, Rob Zombie was just a musician trying his hand at the film industry. House of 1000 Corpses came together fairly quickly following a failed attempt to reboot The Crow, but the rock star’s Hollywood career almost never was due to post-production controversy that left his directorial debut on the shelf for three years.
Production on Corpses was completed in 2000 before Universal Studios refused to release it due to its objectionable content. MGM later came on board to distribute it in 2002 until a tongue-in-cheek remark by Zombie caused them to cancel the deal. Finally, Lions Gate signed on and released it in April of 2003, launching Zombie’s film career as well as a franchise that would be followed by 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects and 2019’s 3 from Hell.

Walpurgisnacht, also known as Walpurgis Night or Hexennacht, is a pagan holiday celebrated on the night of April 30th. It is named after Saint Walpurga, an eighth-century nun who Christianized parts of Germany. However, the holiday has roots in pagan traditions that celebrate the coming of spring and the triumph of life over death. It is also associated with witchcraft and supernatural phenomena, making it a perfect occasion to indulge in some spine-chilling horror films.

Rob Zombie’s The Munsters put a colorful spin on the classic black & white television series last year, and this year Neca is bringing action figures based on the film to the table.
Officially put up for grabs this week, 7″ scale action figures of both Herman Munster (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and Grandpa Munster (Daniel Roebuck) are in stock now!
Neca previews the two action figures…
“Neca introduces Herman Munster as an Ultimate action figure! This creature brought to life by Dr. Wolfgang was accidentally made with the brains of a comedian but has still managed to catch the eye of the vampire Lily. This 7” scale action figure is loaded with features and accessories direct from the movie, like a copy of Herman’s album Electro-Shock Daddy-o! Also includes Edgar Allan Poe book, extra interchangeable head and hands. Comes in display friendly 5-panel packaging with opening front flap featuring custom artwork by Daniel Horne.

It's genuinely surprising that the peculiar Transylvanian family residing at 1313 Mockingbird Lane was never updated for modern audiences until 2022. "The Munsters" TV show ran on CBS for only two seasons in the mid-1960s and then sat dormant for decades until Rob Zombie finally revived the series, transforming it into a Technicolor feature film that eventually landed on Netflix. The final product served as more of a prequel to the TV series that focused on the bizarre courtship between Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie) before settling down with Lily's grandfather The Count, their son Eddie and their niece Marilyn.
Regardless of whether you're a fan of the 2022 film or not, (/Film's review wasn't exactly kind), Zombie felt like the perfect choice to direct. "The Munsters" was a dream project for the musician and filmmaker who had long been obsessed with the original series and subsequent TV...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Rob Zombie is an incredibly successful recording artist, known for songs like "Dragula" and "Living Dead Girl," as well as his song "More Human Than Human" with the band White Zombie, with nearly 6 million albums sold. That is one heck of a career spanning over three decades, and that's not including the man's movie career, which has been going steady for 20 years now, dating back to 2003's gory cult classic "House of 1000 Corpses." But, unlike his music career, Zombie's movie career got off to an incredibly rocky start — and at first, it seemed like his debut feature would never see the light of day.

Rob Zombie's first feature film, 2003's "House of 1000 Corpses," is a filthy little nightmare of a movie. Shot for only $7 million, Zombie's film took a lot of tonal and visual cues from Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but filtered through the director's ultraviolent heavy metal sensibility. The film was bleak, violent, grimy, and uncomfortable. It also didn't make a lot of sense. What, for instance, was the true nature of the subterranean cyborg named Dr. Satan? It wouldn't be until the 2005 sequel, "The Devil's Rejects," that the true nihilism of the film's villains would be explored. Zombie didn't seem to care much about the victims of the wicked Firefly family -- mostly traveling students and tourists who stumble into the Firefly's unsavory roadside attractions -- choosing instead to focus on a family who have found solidarity in their mutual evil and innate need to kill and destroy.

Aside from the fact that she’s got one of the most unforgettable names in Hollywood, Sheri Moon Zombie is what you might call cool. There was a brief moment she entertained the thought of becoming an MTV VJ. However talented she may be, though, it’s her role as legendary rocker Rob Zombie’s wife for which she is most recognizable. 1. Sheri Moon Zombie isn’t Her

Ever since the early days of film, horror fans have been comparing and contrasting the scariest moments of our favorite movies. We love to share the specific scenes that get under our skin, hoping that we’re not the only ones afraid to turn out the lights. Ranking these moments also gives us a sense of accomplishment and we compare and contrast to find the films that test us the most. If we can watch the scariest moments imaginable and come out the other side, we might just be brave enough to take on the real world.

Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman and Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily in The Munsters
A reworking of a classic series which achieves something surprisingly similar in tone, The Munsters is not what most people would expect from a Rob Zombie production. It’s whimsical, it’s family friendly, and it’s really very sweet. A large part of that is down to Zombie regular Jeff Daniel Phillips, who plays the newly created Herman Munster, a monster just getting his bearings in the world when he meets Sheri Moon Zombie’s Lily, who will become the love of his life. Like a big screen sitcom with wild colours and a loud rock soundtrack, the film is definitely a niche work, but will delight many longstanding fans. When I meet Jeff, he tells me that he numbers amongst them.
“I was a huge fan growing up, definitely. And everybody else was also.

When Rob Zombie first announced his interest in adapting classic sitcom The Munsters, star Jeff Daniel Phillips told me, fans of the series were nervous. They expected what most of us do from a Zombie film – a gorefest with a cynical take on life and lots of gratuitous violence, starring the director’s wife. This is a very different piece of work from the cult director, however, and only the latter of those things applies. It’s surprisingly close to the spirit of the original, but with an added layer of meta-humour which, though often playing with irony, somehow also manages to be full of heart.
Sheri Moon Zombie plays Lily (of course), whilst Phillips is Herman, freshly made from not-so-fresh parts and just starting out in the world. As the film opens, with Lily’s father The Count rising from his coffin and putting his back out, Lily is on a date.

A couple days ago, writer/director Rob Zombie shared an image from the alternate ending to his feature directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here). An ending that would have shown Sid Haig’s character Captain Spaulding giving a ride to final girl Denise (Erin Daniels) in his Museum of Monsters and Madmen truck. In the film, Spaulding gave Denise a ride in a convertible – and Otis (Bill Moseley) was revealed to be in the backseat. In the deleted ending, Denise would’ve been dragged into the back of the truck by Spaulding’s pal Ravelli (Irwin Keyes). Zombie has now shared another image from the alternate ending that shows Haig and Daniels in the truck, before Ravelli emerges from the back.
Unfortunately, it’s not likely we’ll ever see footage of this alternate ending, because all of the cut scenes were lost while the movie was passed from studio to studio.

The screenplay for Rob Zombie’s feature directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here) can be found online, and is quite different from the film that made it to theatres in 2003. Not only was Grampa Hugo revealed to be Dr. Satan, but there are scenes in the script that were filmed and cut – and Zombie has no access to the footage, as it was lost while the movie was passed from studio to studio. Among the differences is an alternate ending… and Zombie took to Instagram to share a rare still from the film’s original ending! In this image, we see Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen truck:

Welcome to our inaugural episode of Kill Counter: Face-Off Edition! In this series, we’ll be pitting films against each other to see which one had most the bone-breaking carnage between the two contestants. Today, we have a couple of Rob Zombie classics for your viewing pleasure.
First up, House of 1000 Corpses starring Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon Zombie, Karen Black, Walton Goggins, Rainn Wilson, and Chris Hardwick. Released in 2003, the black comedy horror film centers on a group of teens who are kidnapped and tortured by a psychotic family, during Halloween, after traveling across the country to write a book. While initially receiving unfavorable reviews from critics, the film was a box-office success and has since achieved a cult following.

In discussions about slasher infamy, all roads lead to Haddonfield. The Halloween franchise has amassed a convoluted franchise canon since the late 1970s, filled with retcons and redos as recently as Halloween Ends — including Rob Zombie‘s universally divisive 2007 remake. Countless horror screenwriters, including Josh Stolberg (no stranger to “Revenge of the Remakes”), attempted to plot an angle that’d continue Michael Myers’ story after Halloween: Resurrection — but the tragic 2005 death of producer Moustapha Akkad left the franchise in his son Malek’s hands and veered into a new direction. It was only a matter of time before Halloween would become another 2000s remake statistic, with no shortage of filmmakers lining up to pitch their spin on Haddonfield’s boogeyman.

Rob Zombie's "Halloween" is not very good. Of course, anyone daring to remake John Carpenter is facing a Herculean task, but Zombie proved surprisingly ill-equipped for the job. To be fair, the filmmaker has a great eye for visuals. It's his screenwriting that needs serious work, and his "Halloween" is loaded with some weak storytelling and terrible dialogue.
So I wasn't exactly jumping for joy when Zombie returned for "Halloween II." But surprise, surprise, the film turned out to be a vast improvement over the original. Sure, the lousy dialogue is still there. But, freed from having to imitate Carpenter's story beats, Zombie gets to go wild, unleashing a strange,...

The “Ultimate” 7″ scale figures are due out in the last quarter of 2022, Neca notes.
Neca also recently released a set of stylized toys depicting Rob Zombie’s trio, seen here.

Starting in fall 1964, children across America could watch CBS’ The Munsters but come January 1966, they seemingly all flipped the dial to ABC and Batman. The superhero series’ smash ratings cast a death spell on the humorous take on the classic monsters, with the exaggerated look as perfected by Universal’s horror films of the 1930s. Fred Gwynne was a delight as Herman Munster, paired nicely with Yvonne DeCarlo and Al Lewis. The sitcom transferred traditional family drama tropes to the residents of 1313 Mockingbird Lane and for 70 episodes, it was tremendous fun, revived for wildly successful syndication.
Ever since, there have been revivals in feature films, animated series, and failed attempts at series revivals. Now, here comes director Rob Zombie with his take on the classic characters, largely retaining the look of the original series, but in garish color.

In “The Munsters,” the director Rob Zombie makes a game attempt to pass off his amateurishness as attitude. It’s like watching a Tim Burton film with the cheekiness turned up to 11 and the film technique dialed down to 2. Yet “The Munsters,” the family-of-ghouls ’60s sitcom that Zombie is adapting, was such a ticky-tacky piece of gothic bat-house surrealism that the movie, broad and slovenly as it is, works more than it doesn’t. The film is a lot like its hero, Herman Munster: benignly dim-witted, Day-Glo in color, top-heavy with tomfoolery, lumbering in one direction and then the next, always cracking itself up in an innocently aggressive monster-mash way.
“The Munsters” debuted in 1964, in the middle of the age of theater-of-the-absurd American sitcoms, yet the show, if anything, was less corny, less obvious, and lighter on its feet than this overstuffed update/reboot, with its Famous Monsters of...

It was hard to picture how Rob Zombie’s film adaptation of The Munsters might play. Would it be, say, a profanity-laden ’70s period piece where Grandpa Munster was a pedophile? Instead we get the heavy-metal horror auteur’s first “kid-friendly movie”––though that is to acknowledge virtually no child would probably be into the longueurs of this oddball exercise.
With no relationship to the original sitcom, I was able to gather that it took on the nuclear family of the ’50s and ’60s, and one imagines the easy subtextual route for a modern adaptation would’ve been the destruction of this so-called unit in the chaotic 21st century. With the tipoff that the childless couple has no little Eddie Munster in this iteration, this is a wholly personal use of IP that almost comes off like Zombie re-telling the story of him and his wife Sheri falling in love...

Say what you will about Rob Zombie, but you can’t pretend he isn’t consistent. As a musician, a stage performer and a filmmaker, Zombie has made a lucrative and (mostly) artistically intriguing career out of his boundless affection for schlock. Whether it’s ultraviolent horror movies, low-budget luchador adventures or goofy monster sitcoms, his love of B-movie media always jumps out at the audience. And at his best, he convinces us to love his weird obsessions too. At his worst… well, we’ll get to that.
Honorable Mention: “Grindhouse”: “Werewolf Women of the SS” (2007)
Rob Zombie’s fake trailer from the 2007 double-feature “Grindhouse” stands out, but not necessarily in a good way. His teaser is a rather obvious riff on exploitation sleaze like “Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS,” but making her an actual wolf, with tasteless Nazi imagery and an also tasteless cameo from Nicolas Cage as the racist caricature Fu Manchu.
