The so-called “Strictly curse” has been a tabloid mainstay for at least a decade, founded on the idea that participating on Strictly Come Dancing (whether as a celebrity or a professional dancer) threatens the status of the relationship you’re in when you sign up.
Stories of its destructive power arrive like clockwork each winter. Along with forgotten B-listers and stars of Holby City and/or EastEnders hitting the dance floor, hysterical headlines will report on Strictly duos left so erotically charged in pasodoble rehearsals that they dump their spouses.
Presenter Claudia Winkleman has repeatedly shot down the curse, once saying that it’s less a supernatural occurrence as merely the Strictly experience being “intoxicating”. It is also true that dancing is an obvious aphrodisiac. Regardless whether you're rehearsing an intimate routine or not, dancing releases endorphins and makes you happy (it’s science!). Similarly, throwing yourself into a diligent...

Tracy Barlow will be arrested for murder in 'Coronation Street' next month. The pawnbroker - played by Kate Ford - killed Kal Nazir (Jimi Mistry) and Maddie Heath (Amy James-Kelly) back in May when she set fire to Victoria Court and the past is now set to catch up with her when she is confronted by police in front of her friends and family in the Rovers Return pub. Earlier this year, the villainous character stole keys to Carla Connor's (Alison King) flat and used a candle to sneak around but...

In anticipation to the start of the series, which runs up to Christmas, the first previews of the contestants rehearsing ahead of the live shows have already been released online.
But along with the conscientious training, tough competition - and, at times, chemistry - comes salacious speculation about romance between the celebrities and their dance partners.

The Syndicate Season Two. BBC
B Van Heusen
Kay Mellor’s The Syndicate was one of the BBC’s biggest success stories of 2012. The lottery based dramedy ruffled some feathers at Camelot but viewers loved watching the action unfold as a group of soon-to-be unemployed store clerks hit the jackpot. The second season of the show features an all new syndicate comprised of hospital workers. Like their counterparts in season one, the five victors soon learn that money isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be.
Mark Addy, Natalie Gavin, Alison Steadman, Siobhan Finneran and Jimi Mistry played the quintet at the heart of the action while Mellor takes on the dual roles of writer and producer. The first of the six episodes airs on Tuesday 19 March on BBC1. Viewers stateside can catch up with season one of the show which is available between now and March 31 through Acorn Media’s streaming service.

Most of you will know Stuart Hazeldine for his blazing debut feature Exam, a tense and claustrophobic thriller starring Jimi Mistry and Colin Salmon, but you may also know him as a prolific Twitterphile and one of Hollywood’s hottest screenwriter.
With credits like The Mutant Chronicles and the as-yet-unproduced Paradise Lost adaptation (originally cast with Bradley Cooper and Benjamin Walker before the funding got pulled), as well as a whole host of uncredited rewrites on the likes of The Day The Earth Stood Still, and spec scripts for sequels to Alien and Blade Runner, he is a force to be reckoned with, both as a writer and as a director.
Stuart was kind enough to give me some of his time and discuss his career to date and his directing methods, as well as 3D, Stress and, er, Tripods…

The afterschool special is alive and well in immigration drama “Festival Of Lights,” an amateurish independent film tracking the evolution of one family in their path from Guyana to America, and the roots they leave behind. Forgive a generation of filmmakers, well-intentioned, but unaware that nuance and subtlety are missing from their arsenal, soldiering on with incidence. “Festival Of Lights” is nothing if not busy, hop-scotching around hot-button satellite issues to the main concern of immigration like Darren Aronofsky’s camera operator lost in the K-hole. “Festival Of Light” follows young Reshna (Melinda Shankar) from her childhood in Guyana to her teenage lifestyle in America. As a child, her father Vishnu (Jimi Mistry) would take her to the Diwali festival, as they enjoyed the street fair as a family despite a hostile atmosphere that threatens their livelihood. A frantic home invasion by guerillas occurs just next door: Reshna’s...

Lights Out: Prasad’s Feature Debut a Messy, Stagnant Immigration Drama
Previously working as a documentary filmmaker, director Shundell Prasad makes her fiction feature debut with Festival of Lights. Here she explores issues of identity and immigration with a family fleeing 1970s Guyana for a better life in the United States. However, despite the population she highlights, mostly unseen or unheard in mainstream Western cinema, the end product is a contrived soap opera of cliché and predictability. Top that off with an extremely grating, off-putting lead performance, a weak screenplay and a rather uninspired look, and you have what feels like a film school conversation piece inspired by innately better material, which something like Mira Nair’s similar 1991 film, Mississippi Masala (yes, different region and immigration experience explored) simply blows out of the water in comparison.
Beginning during a period of political turmoil, we are introduced to Vishnu (Jimi Mistry...

In the past six episodes of Strike Back’s second season on Cinemax, the series has shifted beyond a mere action tale. This isn’t the Expendables 2, filled with glitzy action and enough one-liners to make your head explode.
Strike Back is a soldier’s story. Terrorist threats are no longer Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Scott’s (Sullivan Stapleton) sole motivation. Now, they’re going up against their internal demons. Season 2 is a deeper, more personal saga.
In Episode 2.5, Scott made a connection with Rebecca (Lyne Renee), which was as physical as it was psychological. As aggressive as Rebecca was in bed, Scott recognized that she was someone who had “given up” – much like he had done before coming to Section 20. These were two soldiers, working in the field and dealing with Ptsd in their own way.

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Cinemax’s Strike Back gets off to a familiar start for action movie and spy genre fans – a known terrorist is getting ready to unleash a sinister attack and the best intelligence agents in the business must do whatever it takes to stop him.
However, this simple launching off point is hardly the story you’ll encounter in Cinemax’s first season of the series. What starts off as a Jason Bourne meets 24 tale, quickly becomes something much more as you become fully invested in these characters with each episode. Strike Back deftly mixes action and intrigue with enough sex to make Spartacus jealous. By the finale, this series earns it’s place as one of the most thrilling new series on TV and makes the spy-loving world know that this is far from a cookie-cutter action tale.

This week, we spoke with Amanda Mealing, who stars as Col Grant on Cinemax’s new action series Strike Back. In this interview, Mealing discusses the inner fire that drives Col. Grant. She also talks about the training she had to go through for the role. Although you can easily picture Philip Winchester (stars as Stonebridge) and Sullivan Stapleton (stars as Scott) going through rigorous training for their roles, you’ll be surprised to hear some of the “pains” Mealing had to endure. We also chat with Mealing about the Strike Back season finale and expectations for Season 2. Highlights: 1:00 – Why Col Grant is a powder keg who’s not allowed to show emotion 2:10 – Mealing discusses her on and off camera rapport with Jimi Mistry (stars as Latif) 2:40 – it’s “quite nice” to command Stonebridge and Scott 5:00 – twists in finale 6:20 – banter with Sully 7:33 – Mealing gets into a small fight with.

Many were skeptical when Cinemax ventured into the primetime television game, but its unique venture, the 10-part action drama series "Strike Back," combines what the network does best -- sex -- with violence. In other words, it's every man's new favorite show.
In the explosive season finale -- literally! -- counterterrorism team Section 20 races to stop their season-long nemesis, a terrorist named Latif (Jimi Mistry), from violently derailing a summit of world leaders in Budapest. At the helm of the dangerous operation are team leader Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing, "Holby City"), former Delta Force operative Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton, "Animal Kingdom") and his straight-laced partner, Sgt. Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester, "Camelot").
If you're a fan of the show, this is definitely one episode you don't want to miss. After all, there's a reason the cast list for Season 2 of "Strike Back" has yet to be revealed.

Throughout the first six episodes of Strike Back, Stonebridge (Philip Winchester), Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and Col. Grant’s (Amanda Mealing) team at Section 20 took down some of the world’s deadliest terrorists. However, each victory came at a cost. In episodes 3 and 4, Britain’s mobile Tactical Operations Unit went to Cape Town, South Africa to stop an ex-ira member named Daniel Connolly (Liam Cunningham, Game of Thrones) who was connected to Latif (Jimi Mistry). The ruthless mercenary took Capt. Kate Marshall’s life, just before Grant too his. However, Marshall’s life wasn’t the only thing Connolly killed. By killing Kate, Connolly had inadvertently killed the happiness in Stonebridge’s life. In subsequent episodes, Stonebridge became more brash – almost seeking death. Grant may have won a temporary revenge victory, but it wasn’t going to bring back Marshall or Stonebridge’s friendly innocence. Episodes 5 and 6...

We’ve got an exclusive look at tonight’s episode of Strike Back, showing off one of the more humorous moments on the series. In this clip, Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing) and Maj. Oliver Sinclair (Rhashan Stone) discuss Latif’s (Jimi Mistry) subvert actions towards Section 20. It’s a very serious moment, where Grant expresses the importance of taking risks. Then, the scene transitions to Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and & Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) who get a very inappropriate proposition while on duty. The action-packed show, which stars Sullivan Stapleton ("Animal Kingdom") and Philip Winchester ("Camelot"), received an order for 10 new episodes, which will air in mid to late 2012.
Before we start celebrating Season 2, we have to unfortunately face reality: There are only two episodes left in the season! And we can't to see what the terrorist Latif (Jimi Mistry) has in store for Section 20.

The freshman season of Strike Back is coming to a close with one last mission to find Latif (Jimi Mistry), which kicks off in Chechnya. Check out the preview clip below: Cinemax has given BuzzFocus a chance to “act out” the Strike Back life with our very first Monocular. It’s a 10X Zoom 25mm Tasco model that is branded with the Strike Back logo. Truthfully, we’ve wanted to pick a few of these up for years. Jack Bauer always seemed to have his trusty monocular on hand in the most unlikely situation on 24 . It’s also a great addition to our growing zombie apocalypse / disaster survival kit. If you’re trying to spy on a dastardly terrorist or scope out supplies trapped inside a zombie infested warehouse (you know what we’re talking about Walking Dead fans), then the monocular is an absolute necessity. The second-to-last episode of...

David Chute is happy to report that Strike Back has been re-upped.Cinemax action hit Strike Back will be back to strike again in 2012, powered by strong ratings and a growing cadre of passionate fans – including many who held mock funerals when 24 was canceled. Actually I made that last past up, but as the drive to prevent terrorist mastermind Latif (Jimi Mistry) from setting off a Wmd races toward its finale, the state of suspended animation that viewers settle into between installments is strikingly familiar. My prediction is that Sb, too, will be an even bigger hit on DVD than on first broadcast, with viewers devoting entire lost weekends to the adventures of Section 20 operatives Scott and Stonebridge. And just to make ...

We’re nearing the conclusion of the freshman season of Strike Back on Cinemax. With Season 2 on the way, it’s time to start wondering whether or not the suspected security leak inside Section 20 will be revealed by the season finale. I’m hoping it’s not Maj. Oliver Sinclair (Rhashan Stone). He showed off his worth in the Tahir (Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje) mission so I would hate to find out that he was working for the other side. However, he’s been questioning Scott’s judgment a little too much of late, often bringing up criticism to Col. Eleanor Grant’s (Amanda Mealing). You have to wonder if he’s not trying to set the team up for failure. Grant’s (Amanda Mealing) vendetta with Latif (Jimi Mistry) seems genuine. Also, she’s got a pass after she took out Daniel Connolly (Liam Cunningham) in episode 4. So, if there is a leak,...

Cinemax’s first primetime drama series Strike Back is a keeper. HBO’s sibling cable network has picked up a 10-episode second season of the action series to air next year. Filming will begin in South Africa in early 2012. Returning as producing partners to Cinemax/HBO are Left Bank and Sky, which will air the series in the U.K. Also coming back are Left Bank’s Andy Harries and Sky’s Huw Kennair-Jones as executive producers, series producer Michael Casey, head of production Marigo Kehoe, series directors Bill Eagles, who will direct four new episodes, Paul Wilmshurst, who will direct two episodes, and writer Tony Saint, who will write a number of episodes and co-executive produce. There must be major deaths coming in the final episodes of Season 1 of Strike Back, which ends Oct. 21, as Cinemax declined to announce the cast for Season 2 “due to plot spoilers in upcoming...

After last week’s exciting South Africa episode, all hands are on deck at Section 20 to continue the hunt for Latif (jimi Mistry). Check out this new clip from Strike Back Episode 7. Now that Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) is “all healed up” from the attack on Tahir (Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje), he’s back with Stonebridge staging a rescue mission. This video captures the dry wit of their combat-duo relationship. In Episode 7 Section 20 negotiates the release of five European Union officials taken hostage by Kosovoan weapons, drugs and human trafficker Hasani (Mel Raido), intending to exchange the hostages for Hasani¹s cousin Rama (Zsolt Nag), who is in a Vienna prison for attacks on U.S. and British targets. One of the hostages is undercover Mi-6 terror expert John Allen (Adrian Rawlins), identified by Crawford (Iain Glen) as Latif¹s (Jimi Mistry) inside man. When the exchange in rural Kosovo doesn¹t go as planned,...

There’s one thing you can say about Strike Back, the series isn’t afraid to take risks – especially, when Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) is involved. He may get all the women, but Scott also catches all the physical flack. Stonebridge (Philip Winchester), by contrast, does not get shot or captured as much as Scott, but he’s had to suffer through emotional loss after Kate (Eva Birthistle) was very unceremoniously blown up at the end of the South African mission. I’ve said it before, Strike Back plays out like a Jason Bourne or Bond movie. Suffering and death is ingrained in the series and you don’t have to wait twenty episodes like network TV for it to happen. In Episode 5, Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Lara Croft Tomb Raider) and Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje (Lost, The Thing) guest star as new enemies to Section 20. Glen plays a typical action-movie archetype.

If you haven't been watching the Cinemax's new show, "Strike Back," then you've been missing out on a ton of secret-operative action. If you're a fan of "24," then think of "Strike Back" as its more violent, sexier cousin.
In case you haven't been following all of the action, here's a short recap of the premise.
The series follows Section 20, an elite military black ops unit within the British government that focuses on high-risk, top-priority targets--including an international group of terrorists.
And this week Section 20 is after a brutal militia leader named Tahir, played by Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje -- who "Lost" fans may know as Mr. Eko -- and he plays the twisted villan quite perfectly.
In tonight's episode, Section 20's effort to track Latif’s (Jimi Mistry) weapons supplier, which leads them to Gerald Crawford (Iain Glen), a former British Royal Marine turned arms dealer, who agrees to help them...
