Disney’s efforts to boost diversity are under attack ahead of a key shareholder vote to elect its board that will shape the direction of the company.
Stephen Miller’s America First Legal foundation, in a letter sent to Disney’s top brass March 27, claims that initiatives to boost diversity and inclusion violate civil rights laws and have tanked the entertainment giant’s value. (Year-to-date, Disney’s stock has risen more than 30 percent.)
The group asks for the appointment of an independent monitor to investigate the issue, inspection of internal records and distribution of the missive to all shareholders in what appears to be a bid to undermine chief executive Bob Iger in a proxy fight against Nelson Peltz.
In recent years, Disney has been criticized by conservatives for adding racially diverse and gay characters in movies. In a Nov. 29 interview at The New York Times‘ DealBook event, weeks after...

Allies of Donald Trump and powerful conservative organizations are preparing to launch an offensive against “anti-white racism” should the former president retake the White House in November. According to a report from Axios, those in Trump’s orbit are gearing up for a widespread re-interpretation of civil rights laws to combat what they perceive as reverse racism against white Americans.
According to the report, this would include a mass gutting of government programs and diversity initiatives. “As President Trump has said, all staff, offices, and initiatives connected to Biden’s...

Donald Trump‘s late mother-in-law, Amalija Knavs, entered the United States under an immigration program that her son-in-law had scrapped.
On August 6, 2018, Melania Trump‘s Slovenia-born parents, Viktor Knavs and Amalija, were sworn in as U.S. citizens at a ceremony in New York City.
Their attorney, Michael Wildes, confirmed in February 2018 that the couple holds green cards and have been living in America for several years.
Trump criticized family-based immigration laws for a long time, calling such “chain migration” programs harmful to America because they could lead to terrorism and other types of crime.
The news about Melania’s parents also emerged as Trump has campaigned to limit legal immigrants’ access to citizenship and green cards, especially for migrants who benefited from government assistance like health insurance.

Aspiring television writer Brian Beneker, whose credits as a script coordinator go back more than 20 years, isn’t the only straight white male to feel that he was being shut out of a writing job because of diversity initiatives. But so far he appears to be the only one willing to seek out Stephen Miller’s America First Legal foundation, associating himself with a Trump world figure who is particularly loathed by progressives.
With his lawsuit against CBS and Paramount alleging that he faced discrimination when he did not get a staff writing job on the CBS military drama Seal Team, Beneker has become a vehicle through which Miller is waging his war on diversity and inclusion efforts in the entertainment industry. In doing so, Beneker has defined himself in a way that is likely to stick. Reached by phone, he declined to comment, as did his attorneys.

A lawsuit filed by a Seal Team script coordinator and freelancer who claims he was denied a writing position because he’s a straight white guy has already struck a chord with fellow scribes.
Many took to X to express their frustration with freelance scribe Brian Beneker, who says in the complaint that he suffered by not being part of “the favored hiring groups; that is, they were nonwhite, LGBTQ, or female.” He also called out the “illegal policy” of diversity, equity and inclusion measures.
Beneker, who has worked on Seal Team since 2017 and before that was a script coordinator on Sons of Anarchy, claims in 2019 that he questioned current showrunner Spencer Hudnut over why previous showrunner John Glenn had hired a new male writer when Glenn claimed at the time that “there were already too many staff writers and there was no room for CBS to hire [Beneker].”

The Dei wars raging in Red State America have made their long-expected arrival in Hollywood. With support from one of Donald Trump’s closest aides, a Seal Team staffer has filed a discrimination lawsuit against CBS and Paramount Global claiming he was denied a writing position on the show because of being a straight white guy.
‘Defendants failed to hire or promote Mr. Beneker due to his race, sex, and heterosexuality,” the complaint from longtime Seal Team script coordinator and freelance scribe Brian Beneker reads. CBS Studios and its parent Paramount have been sued for allegedly carrying diversity quotas that discriminate against straight white men in what may be the opening legal salvo against efforts to boost diversity and inclusion in Hollywood in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision knocking down affirmative action.
Brian Beneker, a script coordinator for Seal Team, alleges in a lawsuit filed in California federal court Wednesday that he was repeatedly denied a staff writer job after the implementation of an “illegal policy of race and sex balancing” that promoted the hiring of “less qualified applicants who were members of more preferred groups,” namely those who identify as minorities, LGBTQ or women. He seeks at least $500,000, as well as a court order making him a full-time producer on the series and barring the further use of discriminatory hiring practices.

Jen Psaki has a message Monday night for conservatives endorsing the conspiracy theory that Taylor Swift is a Democratic plant ahead of the 2024 presidential election: “Shake it off!”
The MSNBC journalist opened an “Inside With Jen Psaki” segment on Swift’s history in politics by breaking down how the biggest pop star in the world went from being “notably and publicly apolitical” in 2018 to a figure that some conservatives, including Fox News’ Jesse Watters and former GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, propose to be a nefarious operative to get President Joe Biden to a second term.
Such theories come not only after her omnipresent popularity in pop culture and beyond with her Eras tour last year, but also in her support of LGBTQ Americans through the Equality Act, her endorsement of Biden in 2020 and her raising the alarm on the impact of overturning Roe vs. Wade in 2022.

He captioned the six-minute-long video, “The Biden administration is importing millions of third world immigrants to live here illegally, and at same time telling them that white people are the source of their problems. How’s that going to work out in the end?”

He continued that America has long been known as a land of opportunity, and implied that it is a meritocracy. He then claimed that affirmative action inverted that, and went on to say that when immigrants come to America they are immediately told white men are evil,...

The Supreme Court announced last week that it would take up a case considering restrictions on the most widely-used method of abortion in the United States: the abortion pill. Under a worst-case scenario for American women, that case could have triggered a full reversal of the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, cutting off access to the medication across the country. That didn’t happen. The Supreme Court said it would only consider a more narrow set of questions about regulatory changes that have made the abortion pill more accessible in recent years.

It’s no secret that Donald Trump has long promised a widespread immigration crackdown should he retake the White House in 2024. Still, in recent weeks the former president’s rhetoric on immigration has reached an authoritarian fever pitch. On Friday, Trump justified his desire for mass deportations by claiming that American schools “are loaded up with people that don’t speak a word of English.”

When asked by a voter if he would use “drones” or other military measures against the cartels, DeSantis replied, “Yes. I’ve already said that.”
“We will absolutely reserve the right if they’re invading our country and killing our people, we have the right to defend this country […] and it’s not just if they happen to come over the border,” the Florida governor added.

While Hollywood has been a longtime target in the culture wars, this time Fortune 500 firms were hit first. The initial mark was Starbucks. Then it was Morgan Stanley. The Hershey Company and McDonald’s were struck soon after, with BlackRock close behind. Since last year, America First Legal Foundation, a conservative group founded by Stephen Miller, a White House policy advisor under the Trump administration, has been filing complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against major companies arguing corporate diversity and hiring practices run afoul of civil rights laws.
Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down race-conscious admissions in colleges and universities, legal experts say Hollywood should brace for elevated scrutiny around diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and that employers in the private sector could see a surge of reverse discrimination complaints. The legal challenges will be bolstered by the court’s reasoning questioning the use of racial preferences in any context.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid took on two of Donald Trump’s most faithful scions Thursday in a segment for “The ReidOut,” saying threatening letters that Stephen Miller and J.D. Vance wrote to universities reflect an emboldened approach after the Supreme Court’s ruling that effectively struck down affirmative action in colleges.
Reid, in a conversation with activist and former president/director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill, drew a line connecting the language of the Supreme Court’s majority decision and the talking points of the late conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.
Reid then pointed to what she called a direct outcome — letters that Miller, Trump’s former senior White House adviser, and Vance, the U.S. senator from Ohio who was endorsed by Trump, sent to law schools and top universities threatening them with repercussions if they attempted to subvert the ruling.

Stephen Miller, one of Donald Trump’s top immigration advisers, advocated using U.S. predator drones in 2018 to blow up migrant boats full of unarmed civilians, according to an upcoming book by a former administration official.
In a passage reviewed by Rolling Stone, former Trump Department of Homeland Security appointee Miles Taylor writes about an April 2018 conversation in which Miller allegedly advocated an attack on a migrant ship headed for the United States. Miller, Taylor writes, argued for the potential mass killing of civilians by suggesting they were not protected under the U.

Banning Muslims from entering the United States is a longstanding obsession of Trump’s. In December 2015, during the GOP presidential primary, he called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.

Give 2022 some credit—any year with Kate Bush crashing Top 40 radio can’t be all bad. So let’s celebrate a superbly crazy year for music, when brilliant tunes kept exploding all over the stylistic map. These are my 25 favorite songs of 2022. (Although many other gems are over on my albums list, to avoid duplicating all the same artists. Including, but not limited to: hits, flops, obscurities, pop kicks, rap hustlers, soul divas, guitar monsters, disco jams, reggaeton hipsters, punk rockers, alien superstars, and karaoke room-clearers. And Carly Rae Jepsen,...

As The Eighties began winding down, Bootsy Collins was in his element during nights on the town in Washington, D.C. Flashing his signature star-shaped shades, according to one report, he was chilling with fellow musicians — including some who’d played with Miles Davis — and sharing stories about his former boss and colleague George Clinton from their Parliament-Funkadelic days. Every so often he’d slip into one of the giddy, over-the-top voices heard on Bootsy stompers like “Bootzilla.” And he was living as large as one would expect: “We’re...

Multiple bills have been submitted to the Texas state Senate that would make providing or consenting to gender-affirming care for a minor a form of child abuse under Texas’s Family Code.
The bills are just a handful of the more than 800 legislative proposals submitted to the Texas legislature in anticipation of the new legislative session, which begins in January. The list of submissions is clogged with every form of culture war grievance one could imagine. They include bills that would ban trans athletes from K-12 sports, increase penalties for election fraud,...

Reports from Maricopa County, Arizona, election officials indicated early on Tuesday that around 20 percent of its 223 polling places were experiencing issues with vote tabulation machines. Donald Trump and other commentators responded by stoking conspiratorial fears of fraud and discouraging voters from using secure drop boxes at polling places to have their vote tabulated at central county election offices.
“Reports are coming in from Arizona that the Voting Machines are not properly working in predominantly Republican/Conservative areas,” the former president wrote. “Can this possibly be true when a vast majority...

It’s time for a new episode of the video series Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie?, and in this one we’re looking into the disturbing, tragic real world events that inspired the classic 1987 horror thriller The Stepfather (watch it Here). To find out all about it, check out the video embedded above.
Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie? is sort of a spin-off from our show Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie. Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie? dives into movies that were based on or “inspired by” true stories, real people, and actual historical events so we can try to separate fact from fiction.
Directed by Joseph Ruben from a screenplay by popular crime novelist Donald E. Westlake (who crafted the story with
Carolyn Lefcourt and Death Wish author Brian Garfield), The Stepfather has the following synopsis:

When Jake Tapper launches his new primetime show on CNN Tuesday at 9 p.m., he will have to turn from the intensely serious (an interview with President Joe Biden) to the sublime (a chat with actor Dwayne Johnson). It will be just one of many pivots the anchor will have to make in days to come.
The version of “CNN Tonight” that Tapper will lead through the midterm elections aims to provide “thoughtful, no-bulls—t context” around some of the biggest stories in the news cycle, according to a person familiar with the matter, and won’t tether the journalist to the CNN programs for which he is known best, “The Lead” and “State of the Union.” Viewers should expect Tapper to focus on fewer stories and to spend more time digging into them, and to hold forth with newsmakers and heads of state as well as authors, actors and figures of popular culture.

“Stevie, stick to writing fascist speeches,” Law & Order: Organized Crime star Christopher Meloni wrote to former Trump White House Director of Speechwriting Stephen Miller today on Twitter. Earlier Miller, who allegedly helped write Donald Trump’s Jan. 6 speech, had called the actor “the guy with the most unwatchable Law & Order spin-off” and “a very angry — and very ignorant — far-left ideologue” for making fun of Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Co).

Christopher Meloni and former Donald Trump advisor and speechwriter Stephen Miller engaged in a war of words on Twitter that ended with the “Law & Order” favorite telling Miller, “Stick to writing fascist speeches.” It all started when Meloni reacted to Lauren Boebert’s latest “Let’s go Brandon!” post. The phrase is commonly used in Republican circles as an insult to Joe Biden. As the Associated Press reported in 2021, the term is “conservative code for something far more vulgar: ‘Fuck Joe Biden.'”
“There’s gotta be a Stupid Prize gop reps are competing for,” Meloni tweeted at Boebert, a Republican gun activist who serves as the U.S. representative for Colorado’s 3rd congressional district. Boebert once wore a dress with “Let’s go Brandon” printed on it and posed with Trump for a photo.

Donald Trump has identified yet another federal institution he wants to purge of qualified officials and stack with his lackeys: the National Archives.
Since this summer, Trump has told close associates that he wants to gut the nonpartisan historical agency, which the former president believes is full of anti-maga subversives, two sources with knowledge of the matter tell Rolling Stone. Trump has said he plans to make it a priority if he wins a second term, the sources say.

Donald Trump is privately fuming over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flying migrants from the Texas border to Martha’s Vineyard, telling confidants the potential 2024 rival stole “my idea” for weaponizing immigrants. Turns out, Trump was right — but his plans were more extreme than anything DeSantis has come up with to date.

Earlier this week, Florida governor Ron DeSantis took credit for sending two planes filled with migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, much to the delight of late-night television hosts. Several joked about DeSantis’ action, which was apparently part of a program to transport undocumented immigrants to so-called sanctuary destinations.
“Ron DeSantis is the governor of Florida, so why is he grabbing refugees in Texas and shipping them to Massachusetts, huh?” Trevor Noah asked on The Daily Show. “Why? So he can prove that America’s immigration system is broken? Yeah, everyone knows that.

The Department of Justice has issued around 40 subpoenas in the past week seeking information about former President Donald Trump’s plans to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The New York Times reported Monday on the number of subpoenas issued, as well as noting that two Trump advisers — Boris Epshteyn and Mike Roman — had their phones seized.
Dan Scavino, Trump’s long-term social media guru, was among those to receive subpoenas, as was Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner who has also been under scrutiny by the Jan.

Seth Meyers Mocks Laura Ingraham for Calling Cassidy Hutchinson Testimony TV ‘Audition Tape’ (Video)
In the wake of former Trump staffer Cassidy Hutchinson’s damning testimony to the Jan. 6 committee earlier this week, many Trump allies have sought to undermine her authority. That includes Laura Ingraham, who said Hutchinson’s testimony sounded like an “audition tape” for a daytime talk show – something Seth Meyers took particular delight in pointing out the irony of on Wednesday’s “Late Night.”
During his “A Closer Look” segment, the host tore into Fox News opinion hosts at large, calling out how “stunned and flailing” they seemed in the wake of the latest hearing. “They just cycled through a bunch of different lines from screaming about media bias to claiming everyone knows Trump gets angry to dismissing Hutchinson as a low-level staffer who supposedly had ulterior motives,” Meyers argued. But he took particular issue with Ingraham’s comments.
