“The ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony’ is truly music’s highest honor because we’re honoring artists that are generational,” says Joel Peresman, CEO of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. He also served as an executive producers for the live broadcast that aired on November 3, 2023 on Disney+. Watch our video interview above.
“They’re not one hit wonders,” he continues. “They’re not people that come and go. They’re artists that have had lasting impact on other artists, on society, on culture, their impact is immeasurable.” The 2023 honorees included Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners.
Elliott made history as the first female hip-hop artist inducted, and Peresman addresses critics who complain that certain artists inducted don’t fit the “rock & roll” mold. “Well, rock and roll is a broad tent,” he asserts.

Chris Pratt admits he wasn’t very smart with his first big paycheck after breaking into Hollywood.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Sway in the Morning, the actor opened up about his “made it” moment as well as learning about the importance of financial literacy later in life.
When Pratt was asked if he was frugal with the money he initially earned from acting because of his modest beginnings, he quickly responded, “No!”
“I was under the impression that I would never run out of money,” the Guardians of the Galaxy star explained with a laugh. “The first paycheck I got, I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ I had lived on very little money for a long time, so the first big job I got … was a TV movie. I got paid $75,000.”
He went on to sing his own rendition of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”: “I was like,...

Mariah Carey is the quintessential crossover artist, with a catalog of hits that bridges the gap between pop, R&b, hip-hop, and house music. Though the so-called elusive chanteuse has shied away from the latter genre in recent years, she seems headed back into the fold. Just days after hopping on an R&b remix of Muni Long’s “Made for Me,” Mariah has dropped a deep house mix of “Portrait,” the closing track from her underrated 2018 album Caution.
Clocking in at a whopping 16 minutes, “Portrait” is the singer’s longest remix to date, including completely reworked vocals and snippets from her new Audible podcast, detailing how she approaches the remix process. “We usually just let the beat be anything,” she explains. “It didn’t have to be specifically in the same key or the same vibe…as the original. So you can just be free.”

Over the past week or so, Apple Music has slowly unveiled the titles included in its list of the “100 best albums.” Today, the top 10 albums were revealed, with Miss Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill claiming the No. 1 spot. Rounding out the top five are Michael Jackson’s Thriller; The Beatles’ Abbey Road; Prince’s Purple Rain; and Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
The top 10 also includes Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life; Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version); Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; Nirvana’s Nevermind; and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
In all honestly, it’s a pretty safe top 10, especially considering the drama that unfolded when Apple unveiled picks 11-20 and slotted Adele’s 21 at No. 15 and Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at No. 18 — ahead of albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds,...

“You don’t wanna know how alone I’ve been,” Billie Eilish sings halfway through her excellent new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. If Sir Elton John‘s career had only spanned the 1970s, he would still be a music legend, an icon of glam and progressive rock. Fortunately, he forged on, segueing into each new era of rock and branching into film and Broadway with comparable success and his signature aplomb and style. As John celebrates his 76th birthday, we’ve undertaken a nearly impossible task — narrowing a huge catalogue of memorable compositions down to the 25 best.
John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, and showed an affinity for playing the piano at a young age. In 1967, he answered an ad for songwriters and met Bernie Taupin, which led to a long and successful collaboration, with Taupin writing lyrics to which John composed music. It took a few years of struggling, but in 1970 they had their first top ten hit with “Your Song.” In 1972, “Honky Chateau” became his first of seven...

The estate of the late pop star George Michael has revealed plans for the iconic singer to return to the stage as a hologram.
Michael died on December 25, 2016, at the age of 53, due to dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and a fatty liver. Despite his death, Michael’s estate has continued to generate substantial income, and new accounts from his company project a rise in earnings due to the planned hologram performances.
According to official documents filed in the U.K., Michael’s hologram will resume “live public performances” as early as next year, an announcement that has raised questions about the ethics of posthumous concerts.
Michael’s former Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley was enthusiastic about the idea of a return to the stage via hologram. However, Ridgeley admitted he questioned the ethics of using Michael’s likeness and emphasized that any decision would be made in consultation with the estate.

When award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter — who directed the upcoming Luther Vandross documentary Luther: Never Too Much — thinks of her favorite song by the legendary singer, she selects “So Amazing,” the timeless track he wrote and produced for Dionne Warwick and later recorded himself.
But then she pauses. “I think it’s hard for me because I’m very attached to some scenes right now,” she says. Then she speaks about “Any Love,” Vandross’ autobiographical song about wanting to find the one and the sadness behind being alone. The track topped the R&b charts in the late ’80s.
“I really wanted him to be able to tell you his story as much as possible, so how do you do that with someone who’s not with us? A lot of that was thinking about the lyrics. [On] ‘Any Love,’ he was just endlessly frustrated with the absence of a romantic partner in his life,...

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.
Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

Nearly 40 years after it topped the UK Christmas pop chart and made millions of pounds for charity, Band Aid’s charity anthem has come under fresh fire for its lyrics, which critics say perpetuate racist and patronising stereotypes of African people.
The song, Do They Know It’s Christmas? was written and recorded by dozens of the UK’s most popular pop artists in response to a devastating famine occurring in Ethiopia at the time. It sold millions, and within a year had raised £8million ($10.1million) for humanitarian relief.
It also famously kept off the top chart spot Last Christmas by Wham!, a song which finally reached the top spot this year. At the time, that song’s writer George Michael donated all its proceeds to the Band Aid fund.
But Band Aid’s lyrics have not aged well, with critics now lining up to slam what writer Indrajit Samarajiva calls “a terrible,...

‘Tis the season for yuletide classics of yesteryear to finally reach the top spot on the charts as Wham!’s “Last Christmas” was awarded the U.K.’s Christmas Number One this week, 39 years after the song’s release.
The hotly contested Christmas Number One annually measures a single’s popularity in the U.K. in the week prior to Christmas, with classic rockers, pop singers, and festive tracks like Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” winning in decades past. In recent years, the Christmas Number One...

“Last Christmas” by Wham! has made pop history, topping the Christmas chart for the first time since it was released almost four decades ago.
The popular song, written by George Michael when he was a teenager and one half of the pop duo with his schoolfriend Andrew Ridgeley, has been a staple of the Christmas charts ever since, but never made it to the festive number spot before this year.
The song, whose official video you can watch below, was released in the winter of 1984, but was famously held off the number one spot that year by the UK’s charity anthem “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” sung by the collected efforts of Band Aid. At the time, George Michael, who also sang on the charity song, decided to donate all the profits of “Last Christmas” to the Band Aid...

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney recreated the classic ‘Last Christmas’ single cover from British pop duo, Wham to celebrate the holiday season. Reynolds (47) and McElhenney (46) who together own U.K. soccer team Wrexham, styled their hair and outfits to mimic those worn by Wham! stars George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley on the original cover art, reports ‘People’ magazine.
Rob McElhenney then posted the hilarious results to his Instagram on Monday with Reynolds also sharing the image to his own Instagram Stories.
Underneath the pouting black-and-white picture, the pair replaced the names of the pop stars with their own and added the logo of their beloved Wrexham soccer club in the corner of the snap. The post’s caption simply read, “Wrexham!”.
As per ‘People’, the stars also donned leather jackets to stage their own version of the 1983 Wham! studio album Fantastic. Against a red backdrop, the duo posed for the...

Alanis Morissette was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Friday (December 15th), where the self-proclaimed Wham! superfan performed her own take on “Last Christmas.”
Morissette recorded a cover of “Last Christmas” for her new holiday-themed EP of the same name, which also features “Little Drummer Boy,” “What Child Is This,” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” For her Wham! tribute on Fallon, she stayed faithful to George Michael’s 1984 original, her distinct mezzo-soprano seamlessly fitting into its melody.
Morissette also sat down for an interview with Fallon, where the pair discussed her upcoming “The Triple Moon Tour” with Joan Jett, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a speech from Olivia Rodrigo, and a questionable impression of Morissette that Fallon performed on SNL many years ago. Watch it all below.

“It took four of them to be one of me,” Cher said as Clarkson rose out of her seat and clapped. “And I’m not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!”

The BBC reports that the songsheet includes lyrics for the tracks Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide and Suffragette City, two songs that featured on Bowie’s 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
The sheet includes Bowie’s corrections, drafts and notes, and is reported to have been given to the original owner by Bowie. It was previously part of the exhibition dedicated to the musician that was launched at London’s V&a Museum and toured the world between 2013 and 2018.

The leather jacket worn by Michael Jackson to film a Pepsi ad nearly 40 years ago has sold at a London auction for £250,000.
Jackson wore the jacket to film a Pepsi ad in 1984, hot off the heels of his record-breaking success with the Thriller album. The Pepsi ads became notorious for an incident in which Jackson’s hair caught fire while filming, leaving him with serious burns. He later said his pain medication for his injuries was what triggered his dependence on prescription medication.
The jacket was one of more than 20 items, including a jacket originally worn by George Michael and a hairpiece belonging to Amy Winehouse, plus items connected to David Bowie, Oasis and The Beatles, that were sold at auction Friday.
Other items in the auction included ones linked to Elvis Presley, Queen and Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths. There was also a Gibson guitar that previously belonged...

Here we have a documentary, about four hours long and centered on one man, where we don’t see anyone other than the man himself as the narrator. The Robbie Williams docuseries on Netflix, titled after the very man, makes the creative choice of dissecting the man rather than telling the story in a straightforward manner. It is a unique approach, for sure, but does it really work? Let’s find out.
Lying on his bed in his sprawling LA mansion, Robbie Williams takes us down memory lane through thirty years of documented footage. The tool is a basic-looking laptop. He plays and pauses the video while candidly talking about all the highs and lows of his life. Williams describes himself as a loner who is always in bed when he is not performing on stage.

Bernie Taupin received a Musical Excellence Award at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony Friday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame cofounder Jann Wenner received a dig for his imprudent remarks on why certain people were included in his recent book, The Masters.
While promoting his interview-collection book in September, Wenner said that its lack of diversity in interview selections was because female musicians were never “articulate enough on this intellectual level,” and that Black artists “just didn’t articulate at that level.” The resultant outrage saw Wenner apologize, but he was subsequently dropped from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s board of directors.

She’d spent the past four hours witnessing speeches and performances from acts across the vast spectrum of rock, including Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, and Olivia Rodrigo. Near the end of her speech, tears started to flow as the gravity of the moment hit her seemingly all at once.

Jimmy Page made a rare live appearance to honor his “hero” Link Wray by performing “Rumble” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2023 induction ceremony on Friday.
In a pre-recorded video shown before the performance, Page discussed hearing Link Wray for the first time: “‘What is this?’ In those days, there were many guitar instrumentals, but as a 14-year-old kid who could barely play the guitar, it really had an effect on me. The vigor and the strength and the power in it. And you know something else, it was fearless. It was just phenomenal. The essence of cool.”
Fred Lincoln “Link” Wray Jr., who passed away in 2005, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Music Influence category.
The 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class also includes Rage Against the Machine, Kate Bush, Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, DJ Kool Herc, and The Spinners.

Kate Bush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday.
Outkast rapper Big Boi, who describes himself as Bush’s “biggest fan,” had the honor of introducing her into Hall of Fame. “On the surface, our music is obviously very different,” Big Boi noted. “But in important ways, it’s exactly the same. What I love about Kate’s music is that I never know what sound I’m going to hear next. She ignores everything that sounds like a formula and instead does whatever she wants to — like me. She challenges me as a listener and expands my ears and my mind.”
“[She] fills my heads with idea and expand my ambitions for what music can achieve,” Big Boi continued. “As a singer, Kate’s voice is incredibly inventive. Who sounds like Kate Bush? On stage, she’s a miracle. Her songs sound theatrical on their own,...

During his speech, the rapper recounted the legend of the party Kool Herc DJ’d in 1973 to help his sister, Cindy Campbell, raise money for back-to-school clothes, charging 25 cents for women to enter and 50 for men. “We don’t know how much money Cindy managed to raise that day or what clothes she managed to...

Actress Laura Dern introduced Crow prior to a video montage featuring testimonials from Rodrigo, Nicks, and Maren Morris. “She mapped out the chapters of our lives and has continued to be a multi-generational muse for everything we feel, always discovering a newness to reflect on in herself and in us,” Dern proclaimed. “With success came massive sales, numerous awards. But Sheryl, she makes art because she has to. For her, success has never been measured outside herself.”
