That the name Limonov is pronounced “Lee-mwah-nov” is one of two main things that Kirill Serebrennikov’s “Limonov: The Ballad” teaches us about Eduard Limonov, the Russian radical, poet, dissident, emigré, returnee, detainee, bête noire and cause célèbre who in 1993 co-founded the ultra-nationalist National Bolshevik Party. The second is that, as imagined in this adaptation of Emmanuel Carrère’s 2015 fictionalized biography, for all the shifting identities and attitudes he assumed over the course of his controversial life, his persona as an aggravatingly self-aggrandizing solipsist never wavered.
A sharper film could have excavated his contradictions to illuminating effect — the rise of populist, crypto-fascist political movements and their self-ordained maverick leaders being a not-irrelevant phenomenon these days. But Serebrennikov, in love with the posture of the rebel that Limonov adopted without being terribly interested in what, at any given moment, he claimed to be rebelling against, mistakes the trappings for the substance...

Reflecting the peculiarities and contradictions of the man who gives the film its title, Limonov: The Ballad is a strange, stilted, inventive, kaleidoscopic, challenging, imaginative and — above all, and perhaps entirely intentionally — irritating biopic of the Russian poet-punk-prisoner-gadfly-neo-Fascist Eduard Limonov (né Eduard Veniaminovich Savenko in 1948). To paraphrase the novelist Julian Barnes’ review of Emmanuel Carrere’s sort-of novel, sort-of biography on which this film is loosely based, Limonov: The Ballad is a work viewers may enjoy having seen more than they would enjoy seeing it.
It’s anybody’s guess how many will make the actual effort to watch this 138-minute ramshackle romp about a man who, before he died in 2020, applauded Russia’s annexation of Crimea and fought on the side of the invaders in Ukraine’s Donbas and Donetsk regions. Limonov’s unsavory sympathies would likely turn off most Western viewers, apart from the fearless fans of dramas about political monsters.

“Life in space is impossible,” the opening crawl of Gravity informed us — and every movie about a space station certainly seems to agree. Here’s yet another crew experiencing breakdown and terror in the vacuum. While this one avoids the hoariest clichés (the helpless victim behind sealed doors), it also swerves into action when its very premise seems designed for psychological terror instead.
Kira (Ariana DeBose) is a newcomer to the International Space Station, welcomed aboard by the half-American, half-Russian crew. She’s barely begun her second day when nuclear war breaks out back on Earth. The US commander, Gordon (Chris Messina), and his Russian counterpart, Nicholai (Costa Ronin), are both ordered to secure the station. That could have been the premise for a tragically effective, dramatic thriller, with six scientists trying to figure out whether they can trust one another and re-establish contact with a ruined world. Instead, all hell breaks loose.

This article contains spoilers for "I.S.S."
One of the first major theatrical releases of 2024 is the sci-fi thriller "I.S.S." With a minimal cast and an intriguing premise, the film essentially plays out like a slasher film in space where nobody can trust anyone else, and everyone is at risk of dying. It's a lethal, twist-filled ride at the International Space Station and, as anyone might have guessed from the trailers alone, not everyone is going to make it out alive.
The ending of the film leaves much to discuss as it arguably leaves viewers with more questions than it does provide answers. Who survived? What fate awaits those survivors? What is happening on Earth? What about the cure for radiation sickness? We're going to talk about it and try to get to the bottom of it all. Let's get into it.

There’s something about January that just makes us crave movies about comically stupid aviation and space travel mishaps. Whether that stems from a sincere desire for post-holiday palette cleansers or Pavlovian conditioning from a lifetime of studios dumping their misfires in the first six weeks on the calendar is beside the point. This is the time of year that brought us the basic cable heroism of “Plane” and the joyless asininity of “Moonfall” and the wide spectrum of mediocrity that exists between them. In that sense, “I.S.S.” is just another entry in a proud cinematic tradition.

Watching the science-fiction space thriller I.S.S., I couldn’t help but get the feeling that maybe this claustrophobic and talky material might be better suited as a stage play than as a movie, where audiences might be anticipating something a bit more compelling along the lines of a Gravity or an Alien.
Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s competent direction of Nick Shafir’s Black List script never manages to set the screen on fire as it is more focused on the increasingly tense relations between two trios – one American astronauts, the other Russian cosmonauts — aboard the International Space Station just as war between the two countries breaks out on Earth, causing great complication and conflict for the six.

Astronauts Dr. Kira Foster (Ariana DeBose) and Christian Campbell (10 Cloverfield Lane’s John Gallagher Jr.) barely settle into their new posts aboard the I.S.S. before war breaks out on Earth. The shocking display of bombs peppering the stratosphere comes with covert orders to take control of the International Space Station by any means necessary, instantly sowing the seeds of mistrust and paranoia in a claustrophobic thriller that favors suspense over complexity or depth.
Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish), working from a script by Nick Shafir, helms the thriller with a lean efficiency that puts the claustrophobic paranoia at the forefront. Through audience proxy Dr. Foster, I.S.S. quickly introduces the already established crew accustomed to cohabitating in their zero gravity quarters that includes fellow American Gordon Barrett and Russians Weronika Vetrov (Masha Mashkova), Nicholai Pulov (Costa Ronin), and Alexei Pulov. A battle for control of the International Space Station is the focus of director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s sci-fi thriller I.S.S. The infinity of space provides the backdrop for Cowperthwaite’s film, which restricts the action to the space station and the combatants to just six.
The six include three Americans – played by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Chris Messina (The Boogeyman), and John Gallagher Jr. (Gaslight) – and three Russians – played by Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Masha Mashkova (For All Mankind), and Costa Ronin (The Americans). Of the six, only DeBose’s character, Dr. Kira Foster, is an I.S.S. newbie. Four of the astronauts/cosmonauts are already on board the station when she arrives. Back in 2021, William Shatner became one of the few lucky people—and the oldest—to travel into space aboard the Blue Origin craft backed by Jeff Bezos. When he was interviewed after landing back on Earth, most folks expected a soaring soliloquy about the majesty of space. What they got, though, were the words of a man who had seen Earth as it truly is: a tiny, fragile homestead in the middle of an impossibly vast, profoundly empty, uncaring universe, and the fact of it being in perpetual, avoidable danger made him mourn.
It’s actually not an uncommon reaction for astronauts, to the point that there’s a psychological term for it: the Overview Effect. The release calendar for new movies over the next couple of weeks could best be described using an image of a tumbleweed lazily making its way across a desolate road. January has always been known as a dump month for Hollywood but this year is particularly bad as so many movies were pushed to later this year (or into 2025) due to the strikes last year. But it's not as though we have nothing coming down the pipeline. To that end, Bleecker Street is bringing an original sci-fi thriller in the form of "I.S.S." to a theater near you next weekend. Can it defy the odds and become a relatively rare original sci-fi hit?
As it stands, the film figures to have a muted debut. Box Office Pro currently has director Gabriela Cowperthwaite's latest taking in anywhere between $2 and $7 million on opening weekend. That's a pretty wide range but even...

I.S.S. trailer ramps up the paranoia and tension in the isolation of space amid a global devastation
Space is a scary enough place. Imagine being in space and witnessing a devastation taking place on Earth. That’s the start of the premise of the new sci-fi thriller, I.S.S., from Bleecker Street. Bloody Disgusting has just unveiled the new trailer online. The titular initials stand for the International Space Station and is the prime setting for this film. The mood starts friendly enough and showcases the crew of both American and Russian missions living in the structure in perfect harmony. Unbeknownst to them, hell is about to break loose on the planet below. As both crew teams witness vast explosions taking place on the surface of Earth, confusion, sadness, desperation and anger overcome the crew, and as they each receive extreme orders from their governments, the peace within the station dissipates.
The synopsis reads,

The Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina-led sci-fi thriller “I.S.S” has been picked up by Bleecker Street. Bleecker Street has picked up the U.S. rights to the sci-fi thriller I.S.S., directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and starring Ariana DeBose and John Gallagher Jr.
The space pic, written by Nick Shafir and produced by Ld Entertainment, marks Bleecker Street’s second collaboration with Cowperthwaite after the 2017 biographical drama Megan Leavey. Bleecker Street, which plans a nationwide theatrical release for I.S.S., also previously teamed with Ld on Sean Ellis’ Anthropoid and Max Minghella’s Teen Spirit.

After world premiering to critical acclaim at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, Ld Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller I.S.S. starring West Side Story Oscar winner Ariana DeBose has been picked up for U.S. release by Bleecker Street. The film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite from Nick Shafir’s script will hit theaters nationwide at a date that has not been disclosed.
I.S.S. marks Bleecker’s second collaboration with Cowperthwaite following 2017’s Megan Leavey, and its fourth with Ld, which in addition to that true-life military drama, produced their films Anthropoid and Teen Spirit from Sean Ellis and Max Minghella, respectively. The film follows two crews of scientists — one group American, the other Russian — aboard the International Space Station, as they conduct research towards the betterment of humanity. “Indie sci-fi thriller” aren’t words we get to say often enough, even if the reason why is obvious: Making aliens, rocket ships, and the cold vacuum of space look real is expensive. Tribeca Film Festival offering “I.S.S.” avoids that issue by taking place entirely aboard the International Space Station, which becomes the staging ground for a proxy war when a nuclear conflict breaks out between America and Russia. That premise wouldn’t have been out of place in a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury, and “Our Friend” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, working from a Black List script by Nick Shafir, comes close to maximizing its potential with help from a stellar ensemble led by Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina.

As the war in Ukraine creates ever growing tensions between the United States and Russia, it makes one wonder how it will affect the interpersonal dynamics among the astronauts on board the International Space Station. Do they ignore geopolitical strife and concentrate on their duties? Do they get into arguments over their countries’ respective positions? Or do they literally attempt to murder each other?
The last premise forms the basis of Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s tense thriller receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Nick Shafir’s screenplay (an entry in the 2020 Black List of the year’s best unproduced scripts) concerns six astronauts — three American, three Russian — working harmoniously together until war apparently breaks out between the two countries. The Americans receive a message from NASA instructing them, “Your new objective is to take control of the Iss. By any means necessary.” The question is, did the Russian...

In the expanding universe that is science fiction cinema, I.S.S. (International Space Station) directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and penned by Nick Shafir makes a solid new entry into the genre. While the performances from its stars, Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr, Masha Mashkova, Costa Ronin and Pilou Asbæk, are rather stiff, at its heart, I.S.S. is an imaginative yet bare-bones thriller that makes an impact with its limited space and budget.
Dr. Kira Foster (DeBose) and scientist Christian Campbell (Gallagher) are astronauts headed to the International Space Station. They are welcomed by a group of Russians scientists, Weronika Vetrov (Mashkova), Alexy Pulov (Asbæk) and Nicholai Pulov (Ronin), and another American, Gordon Barrett (Messina), who are already stationed there. Kira is there to test how zero-gravity effects regenerative medicine but isn’t adjusting as quickly as she thought and has to get used to constantly floating throughout space.

While the Cold War has long been over a second one brews between the USA and Russia inside “I.S.S.,” Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s frustratingly broad yet stylish space thriller that just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Considering the growing political tensions between the two countries today, this is a movie one might be tempted to adorn with adjectives such as “timely” and “urgent.” Except “I.S.S.”—a title inexplicably fashioned with three periods—is too generic a genre exercise to matter, one that vaguely orbits notions such as trust, selflessness, teamwork and the hazards of blind nationalism with the most simplistic messages to transmit about them.
Working from a Blacklist script by debuting screenwriter Nick Shafir, Cowperthwaite’s pressure-cooker outing is set sometime in the near future, introducing us via an efficient title card to the brief history of the International Space Station (Iss), founded decades ago...

Exclusive: Svetlana Efremova (The Americans) has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming fourth season of Apple TV+’s space drama series For All Mankind.
Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, For All Mankind explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended. The series presents an aspirational world where NASA astronauts, engineers and their families find themselves in the center of extraordinary events seen through the prism of an alternate history timeline — a world in which the Ussr beats the US to the moon.
The third season shifted the action to the early ’90s with a race to a new planetary frontier: Mars. The Red Planet became the new front in the Space Race not only for the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but also an unexpected new entrant with a lot to prove and even more at stake.

We continue our series of interviews from this year's Tribeca Film Festival with our conversation with Anders Banke, director of the Russian police action movie Newsmakers , which is playing in the festival's Midnight section. Action-packed and even comical at times, the police thriller is a loose remake of Johnnie To's Hong Kong police drama Breaking News , this time set on the streets of Moscow. As the movie begins, plain-clothes officer Major Smirnov (Andrei Merzlikin) has been trailing a group of heavily-armed young thugs, leading to a shoot-out on the streets of Moscow. The gang escapes, leaving another bad imprint on the abilities of Moscow's police to fight crime. Along comes Katya, an ambitious P.R. person (played by Mariya Mashkova), who decides that the best way...
