Kurt Wallander is set to take on more cases after European drama Young Wallander was renewed at Netflix for a second season.
The streamer launched the first season of the series, produced by Banijay-backed Yellow Bird UK and based on Henning Mankell’s novels, in September.
Swedish actor Adam Pålsson stars as the eponymous detective with Argo’s Richard Dillane and Black Mirror’s previously Leanne Best also starring. Pålsson takes on the mantle of Wallander after he was played by Kenneth Branagh in a BBC adaptation of Mankell’s books.
The show is a modern reimagining of the detective story with Kurt Wallander navigating the increasingly violent environment of present-day Sweden. In the first season, after he was unable to save a teenager from a gruesome attack, Wallander had to learn to cope with his guilt in order to solve the crime.

Warning: contains Young Wallander finale spoilers.
Kurt Wallander’s first murder case left him disillusioned and questioning the point of it all. He’d solved the murder and identified the culprit, but was justice done? Was it hell.
After spending weeks discovering who was behind the murder of Malmo teenager Hugo Lundgren – time in which he was beaten up, stabbed, saw his best friend in Intensive Care, and lost his mentor – Wallander was left wondering if any of it had made a jot of difference. The killer was shielded by wealth and status and would likely slide out of his cuffs thanks to expensive lawyers and shady deals.
It was too much for Wallander to take. Unable to keep his emotions separate from his work, he decided he wasn’t suited to police life and quit the Malmo polisen, never to investigate again.

They say you know you’re getting old when policemen start getting younger. By shaving decades off grizzled veteran Inspector Wallander, Netflix’s latest will age us all. This six-part crime drama transforms Sweden’s most famous detective into a fresh-faced junior officer. Confusingly for fans of Henning Mankell’s hit crime novels and the previous screen adaptations, Young Wallander is young now. This isn’t a period prequel delving back into the character’s past, but a reimagining taking him back to day one, in the present.
Present-day Malmo isn’t a safe place to be. At least, not for the residents of the Rosengard estate, a place ruled over by drug dealers and gang violence. When we meet Wallander (Adam Pålsson), he’s living a solitary life there in a small apartment and keeping his job quiet from the locals who don’t exactly hold the police in esteem.

While the international media industry grapples with the tectonic shifts triggered by the growing proliferation of streaming services, Zdf Enterprises is riding the wave of change by seizing opportunities, creating new business models and forging partnerships with the likes of Netflix and other digital players.
As the world sales, licensing and co-production arm of German broadcaster Zdf, Zdfe has long established itself as an independent player in both domestic and global markets and it is quickly adapting to the sector’s new reality.
The company has also expanded its sales and production operations through key acquisitions as part of its overall growth strategy.
“We have tried to embrace the changes, the disruption that these platforms have brought to the market through digitization and streaming possibilities, to recognize the opportunities rather than the threat,” Zdfe President and CEO Fred Burcksen tells Variety. “We have so far been able to profit from that.

Why Kenneth Branagh Loves Mysteries, from ‘Wallander’ to ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ (Emmy Watch)
Kenneth Branagh fell into his love affair with the “Wallander” mysteries by Swedish author Henning Mankell (1948 – 2015) for “the sheer pleasure of the reading,” he told me over the phone. “It was novel by novel. I’m not usually a kind of completist in this regard, but each novel did send me to the next one, and I did read them in order, and I did find myself drawn in, hypnotically. I didn’t feel I’d met anyone quite like this before or this landscape.”
The novels are set in Sweden, in and around the town of Ystad, 35 miles south-east of the city of Malmö, in the southern province of Skåne. And that’s where the PBS Mystery series (four seasons, from 2009 through 2016) is also filmed. “It’s vast and flat,” said Branagh. “It has a strong regional dialect. It’s a curious, forgotten, unfashionable pocket of land. Over 60 percent...

BBC One has announced production is set to begin on a final three-part series of the Sir Kenneth Branagh-led detective drama "Wallander".
Filming will commence shortly on a trilogy of 90-minute episodes which will adapt the two remaining works by Henning Mankell featuring the character.
The first will be based on the 1993 novel "The White Lioness" which James Dormer ("Spooks") is adapting. The other two will be a two-part adaptation of Mankell's final novel "The Troubled Man" which Peter Harness ("Doctor Who") will adapt.
In a statement, Branagh says: "I always approach each series of Wallander with anticipation and excitement, but this last series of films contain some of the greatest challenges the character has ever faced. It's a privilege to try to meet them, and I look forward to a great Swedish Autumn working on Henning Mankell's masterly creation."

According to RadioTimes.com, BBC and production company Left Bank Pictures have nearly adapted all of author Henning Mankell's 'Wallander' novels and will conclude the franchise by bringing the final two books to life. Kenneth Branagh is to return for a final series of Wallander.
The British actor will start filming a fourth run of the crime drama in 2015, reports Radio Times.
The BBC One series - based on the popular Swedish drama of the same name and the original Henning Mankell books - is likely to conclude with three more specials.
The new series is expected to be a one-part adaptation of The White Lioness, followed by a two-parter based on Mankell's final novel The Troubled Man.
BBC One's version of Wallander began in 2008, followed by runs in 2010 and 2012.
The series - which previously featured Tom Hiddleston among the cast - has won six BAFTAs including Best Drama Series.

From The Killing to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – Nordic Noir is red-hot. The boom in Scandinavian crime stories – most adapted from best-selling novels by the likes of Jo Nesbo, Henning Mankell or the late Stieg Larssson – has sent Hollywood agents and producers trolling in the region looking for the next big hit or the next hot on-screen star. See True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard (he's Swedish) or Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, better known as Game of Thrones' Jaime Lannister. So far, however, that success has been limited to drama. Scandinavian

Ronan Bennett, the writer behind Michael Mann's "Public Enemies," will write most of the fourth and final series in the Kenneth Branagh-led "Wallander" for the BBC and Left Bank.
The three 90-minute episodes include an adaptation of Henning Mankell's "The White Lioness" and a two-part adaptation of the very dense "The Troubled Man". Bennett is slated to handled both parts of 'Trouble', it's unknown as yet who'll pen the 'Lioness' adaptation.
Production is aiming to begin in Summer 2014 for an early 2015 transmission on the BBC and PBS. However, the BBC has not yet formally greenlit the new series.
The multi-bafta winning drama, which also starred Tom Hiddleston in the first two series, has consistently pulled in audiences over the nine telemovies to have aired thus far.
Branagh is presently directing Disney’s live-action "Cinderella" feature.

Over the past few years, Scandinavian crime fiction has been hot both at home and abroad. "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" has obviously been the biggest cultural crossover, but so too have books by folks like Jo Nesbø, Henning Mankell and Karin Fossum, along with TV shows like "Wallander," "The Killing" and "The Bridge" (the latter two of which have been remade for American television). Generally, the entire genre is seen as darker and smarter than your average crime flick or paperback page turner, and completed with a flair unique to the region. But if you need evidence that not everything from Scandinavia's creative pool brims with freshness and can be just as generic as your average TV show on U.S. primetime, than "Annika Bengtzon, Crime Reporter" has more than ample proof. To be certain, the premise is not without promise. Based on the best-selling crime novels by Liza Marklund,...

Guest column by Alice Maltin I’ve been lost in the world of Henning Mankell’s Wallander because I’m viewing the British adaptation on TV while simultaneously following the Swedish series on DVD. This is causing some confusion for me. Is that woman the killer or is it the handyman? Was it the British or Swedish one where I saw that? It’s embarrassing, I admit. For the uninitiated, Kurt Wallander is a detective in a city outside of Stockholm and is played by Kenneth Branagh and Krister Henriksson. Both actors are wonderful in the role. Kurt is dedicated to police work and everything else in life is secondary, including personal relationships. He is the...

A slaughtered village, a mysterious swordsman, a middle-aged judge who undertakes her own investigation: The Man From Beijing (Original title: Der Chinese) contains the elements needed for a compelling suspense drama, but they fail to come together in a satisfying fashion. Based on a best-selling book by Henning Mankell, the two-part, 180-minute adaptation for German television never effectively builds tension, remaining far too slack to maintain interest. The mystery is presented in a straightforward manner that appears very easy to solve, and even the novelty of historical flashbacks is handled in a clumsy manner. On the theoretically positive side, it's refreshing to see a middle-aged woman as the protagonist. Suzanne von Borsody stars as Brigitta Roslin, a judge in Sweden whose parents are among the...

The actor went on to confirm that the final two Wallander episodes would be based on Mankell's final book featuring the character, The Troubled Man. "We would make two films (more)...

Chicago – The great Kenneth Branagh delivers yet again with a new series of “Wallander” films on PBS under the banner of “Masterpiece: Mystery!,” starting tomorrow night, September 9, 2012. These are accomplished, adult tales of loss, guilt, and mystery that should satisfy viewers hooked by the first two “Wallander” runs previously aired on PBS.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
There are moments in the premiere that are a bit too lethargic and slowly-paced for their own good but every time that “Wallander” starts to lose its way, the strong dialogue writing and fantastic work by Branagh bring it back from the brink of tedium. This is high quality mystery entertainment unconcerned with flashy visuals or quick editing. It’s about the human cost of crime.

The newly knighted Kenneth Branagh returns as grizzled and brooding Swedish detective Kurt Wallander to UK screens soon (best guess is July) for a third series of "Wallander" based on two of the novels and one of the short stories by Henning Mankell.
Speaking about the three telemovies with The Guardian, the main arc for this series will be Wallander's relationship with his adult daughter after the death of his father (David Warner).
Branagh says he hopes to turn the remaining two key novels - 'The White Lioness' and 'The Troubled Man' - into the basis for a fourth and final series.
"We've been talking of doing The Troubled Man [Mankell's recent and final Wallander mystery] in two parts, maybe with The White Lioness as well. That might provide a strong arc over what would probably be the final three English Wallanders. That would be my instinct" says Branagh.

While "Thor" will move on without him, Brit multi-hyphenate Sir Kenneth Branagh (yep, he was knighted this week) has certainly been kicking around plenty of other directorial efforts, including an adaptation of Henning Mankell's "Italian Shoes" with Anthony Hopkins and Dame Judi Dench, "The Guernsey Liteary And Potato Peel Pie Society" with Kate Winslet and an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" as well as recently boarding the long-gestating Jack Ryan reboot with Chris Pine.
On top of all this, though, Branagh is evidently working on a project much closer to home; a Belfast-set semi-autobiographical political drama based his own childhood experiences on the brink of The Troubles, an erratic time of political unrest in Britain. "What's always appealed to me was to tell a story about my own experience: a generational thing about my time in Belfast, a particular slice of dockside, working-class, Protestant life. ★★★★☆ On the small screen, keen interest in all things Nordic has exploded since the success of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, with Danish television series The Killing and Danish/Swedish co-production The Bridge being two stand-out examples. If the Larsson effect kick-started this mass public appreciation, then it's fellow Swede Henning Mankell who should be credited for laying the groundwork in the 90s with the abrasive. emotionally troubled maverick detective Kurt Wallander.

Kenneth Branagh used to find playing Wallander so grim, he went to flower shows to cheer himself up. Vicky Frost joins the newly knighted actor in Sweden to talk about the latest series – and his plans to write a drama about his Belfast childhood during the Troubles
You don't often see Kurt Wallander smiling. Frowning, yes; considering something deeply, yes; worrying away at a problem, yes – but not smiling, let alone grinning. Yet, as I watch the Swedish detective climb out of his Volvo and carry in his shopping, he is looking positively contented. Kenneth Branagh, playing the Swede, is delighted I have arrived on set in time to witness such a moment. "It's very rare!" he says after the scene has been shot. "I had to write the smile on my script so I would remember it."
