Vampires and werewolves are big business in mainstream media, with a veritable feast of TV shows and movies being dedicated to the mythical creatures across the decades. So when something comes along that slots straight into the mainstream zeitgeist with its gothic visuals and sexy vampires fighting pesky swearwolves, you know what’s coming next. Yup, sequels and prequels! As mentioned in our previous episode that sunk its teeth into the fun but flawed Underworld from 2003, director Len Wiseman found love with his leading lady, Kate Beckinsale. And, if you’re being massively cynical, you could perhaps suggest that their star-struck Hollywood romance is one of the main reasons a follow-up to the first movie was green-lit. Or maybe it was the decent box-office, cool world-building or maybe even the lashings of S&m clad characters? The first movie, as we discussed previously, is flawed and far from perfect but you know what,...

As far as short films go, the good ones are those that have just a single plot line and do not complicate things by adding other superfluous things to embellish the narrative. The new short film The Shepherd is an example of such a film. Based on the novella of the same name by Frederick Forsyth, The Shepherd is an evocative short film that rekindles our faith in miracles. The Shepherd is a Christmas story directed by Iain Softley and stars John Travolta and Steven Mackintosh. Miracles of Christmas are well known in cinema, and the heartwarming tales serve as a great reminder of the importance of not losing hope, as help might be just around the corner. Mixing the festive spirit with an important story about the brave pilots of World War 2, The Shepherd becomes a tale about sacrifice as well. All of it is done in a seamless manner,...

"All I wanted was to come home to spend Christmas with you." Disney has unveiled an official trailer for a short film called The Shepherd, based on the book about a Raf pilot's miraculous flight. This project is co-produced by none other than fellow filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, who's enthusiastic about adapting this story. On Christmas Eve in 1957, a fighter pilot on his way home from a distant mission gets lost mid-flight over water and needs a miracle to land safely. It will, of course, be streaming this December just in time for the holidays. Cuarón explains: "I was a long-time admirer of this story and, being old friends with Iain, he was the perfect match to bring this beloved narrative to life on film for the first time." I'm nice to hear this kind of support. He was inspired by the success of last year's short Le Pupille, which we've also added below.

Itvx is the new name for ITV Hub, and with that name change, we get a whole new batch of streaming content. The Confessions of Frannie Langton, an adaptation of Sara Collins’ 2019 novel of the same name, tells the tragic story of a former slave who is sent from Jamaica to London and ends up working for a wealthy couple, where she falls in love with her mistress.
Set in Georgian London, the show is a beautiful, painful and queer story. It’s a British period drama which puts a Black woman at the helm – while defying the stereotypical former slave figure often painted in period dramas. Frannie (Karla-Simone Spence) is educated, well-read and outspoken, but more importantly, she has the ability to fall in love.

Eight. That’s how many types of bread you can choose between in the world’s biggest sandwich franchise. And that is the reason none of us will ever be truly happy. Eight different varieties of bread, from Hearty Italian to Herb and Cheese to 9-Grain Multi-Seeded to another five, just in case those first three aren’t the most absolutely perfect breads for us.
Because we deserve the best, don’t we? If there’s another bread out there that could slightly increase our happiness, then it should be ours. It’s not enough to be satisfied that we have any bread at all, that lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise doesn’t slide out between our fingers each lunchtime; perfection is the aim, and therein lies our curse.
The first three episodes of Soulmates, a six-part relationship anthology drama with a sci-fi premise, are about the corrosive effects of the modern drive for perfected happiness.

"You've got exactly four days to prevent a murder." Rlje Films has unveiled an official trailer for a serial killer thriller titled The Postcard Killings, adapted from the bestselling book of the same name. A New York City detective investigates the death of his daughter, who was murdered while on her honeymoon in London; he recruits the help of a Scandinavian journalist when other couples throughout Europe suffer a similar fate. His investigation leads him to discover a serial killer imitating art, and announcing his arrival in different cities with a postcard. Jeffery Dean Morgan stars in this along with Famke Janssen, Cush Jumbo, Joachim Król, Steven Mackintosh, and Dennis O'Hare. This looks considerably better than expected, but also looks like most other serial killer mystery thrillers. "It all makes horrible twisted sense..." Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Danis Tanovic's The Postcard Killings, originally from Collider: In The Postcard Killings,...

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for all five seasons of “Luther.“]
For fans of BBC America’s “Luther,” after waiting five long years for the fifth (and likely final) season, it might be somewhat anticlimactic that the entire experience ends in just four roughly hour-long episodes, although it’s a season that comes packed with a wallop. Star Idris Elba has called this season “‘classic’ Luther,” and it very much is. It’s a celebration of what’s come before with deliberate connections to the very first season – although each is more of an emotional one than directly narrative – as the title character is forced to reconcile with the psychology and relationships that defined the series’ inaugural, definitive season.
Season 5 picks up where the last episode of season 4 left off, with the aftermath of Benny Silver’s (Michael Smiley) devastating death. Serial killer Jeremy Lake (Enzo Cilenti) is on the loose, on a murderous spree after his and Dr. Vivien Lake...

Chicago – As a wee lad, one of the first records I bought was Elton John’s Greatest Hits. The album was magnficent, each song expressing the very emotion it sought to deliver. With that basis in mind, I approached John’s biopic “Rocketman” with a hope of deliverance. It felt flatter than a pancake under a steam roller.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Everything was off. The casting of Taron Egerton as the title character, although he gave it the old college try, never felt like Elton. The use of John’s music as fantasy elements (as if it were a movie musical) would have been fine if the film had followed through with that particular magic. The part time use was jarring, and the numbers had a “Mamma Mia” (not a compliment) quality to them … director Dexter Fletcher (“Eddie the Eagle”) bit off more than we could digest. And finally, the focus on Ej’s numbing drug use.

This biopic of the legend Elton John is very different. It is unconventionally and expertly mounted, giving an insight into the life of the performer.
Like Elton's life, the narrative begins on a dramatic note. An outrageously dressed Elton barges into a psychotherapy session where he admits to his addiction and is prodded to tell his story, so that he may get relief from his maladies after the cathartic experience.
The narrative, in a typical trajectory of rise-fall-rise is told via dreamlike, fantasy flashbacks where Elton's songs are used to comment on the action of the moment. It is thus a sort of a jukebox musical, told entirely in an ultra-flamboyant style, from John's perspective. It aims to be seen as what amounts to a brave self-portrait.

Hey hard-rockin’ film fans, better hope the sound system at your local multiplex goes well past eleven because it’s musical biography time once more. Sure popular musicians have been recreated on screen through the years, Surprisingly the lives of Al Jolson and Fanny Brice inspired two hit films and a couple of sequels (The Jolson Story begat Jolson Sings Again while the great Streisand starred in Funny Girl then Funny Lady). Ah, but late 2018, a little over six months ago rock and roll ruled the box office (and garnered 4 Oscars) with the story of Queen in Bohemian Rhapsody. And a fictional music flick, the fourth iteration of A Star Is Born, inspired by real performers and showcasing the acting debut of a current music superstar, grabbed a gold statue and lots of filmgoers. Plus earlier this year Netflix got into the act with a “biopic” of those heavy metal hellions,...

The posters say that the only way to truly tell Elton John’s story “is to live his fantasy.” In several instances, Rocketman lazily forfeits the “Tiny Dancer” singer into the jaws of the monotonous biopic beast. But in a whole lot of others, director Dexter Fletcher’s fantastically flamboyant movie floats above the screen, soaring beyond so many of the rudimentary patterns of fact-based filmmaking. It so often achieves in exhibiting Elton’s fantasy that any doubt of fan approval can be put to rest, even if the legend’s story gets lost within his own sparkling glamor.
In Bohemian Rhapsody last year – which Fletcher stepped in to complete after the original director Bryan Singer was fired mid-production – the journey of Queen and lead vocalist Freddie Mercury was accompanied by their catalogue chronologically, from A Night At The Opera all the way to their iconic performance at Live Aid.

Elton John is a legend. No one will argue that. Nor will anyone take issue with his colorful life being given the biopic treatment. The way Rocketman opts to tell this tale, however, that’s a whole other story. Opening this week, the John biopic does not soar like its title would suggest. Worse yet, it misuses and/or wastes much of the musician’s most famous songs. This is easily the most disappointing movie of the year so far. Oscar voters may ultimately be fooled later on in 2019 by a strong central turn and a fondness for the figure being portrayed, but I’m not. This is quite the misfire. The film is, as mentioned above, a biopic of Elton John (Taron Egerton as an adult), the chart topping musician, known as one of the biggest artists ever to grace the medium. Born Reginald Dwight, he was an awkward child,...

Another rock biography with an Oscar-caliber performance so soon after Bohemian Rhapsody? Critics have been more welcoming to Rocketman, starring an electrifying Taron Egerton as the young, addicted, conflicted, gay and gifted Elton John, than they were to the story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, which had to settle for becoming the highest-grossing music biopic of all time ($900 million). The PG-13 Rhapsody took heat for sanitizing Mercury’s sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle and for being, in the words of Bill Maher, “not gay enough.” Rest assured that there’s plenty of sex,...

Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic is an exuberant, rocket-fuelled film that also added a shiny bit of much-needed glamour to this somewhat subdued Cannes red carpet. Sir Elton and his husband David Furnish were producers on the movie, which risked us seeing a hagiographic version of John’s colourful life. Instead, Fletcher gets beneath the sequins and lays the singer bare, warts and all.
First off, let’s get the Bohemian Rhapsody comparisons out of the way. Despite sharing many similarities – the dodgy producers, the failed marriages and the difficult parental relationships – there is one significant difference: Elton John’s homosexuality is declared early on, both in terms of the film’s narrative arc and in the singer’s life, and there are scenes of him having sex with his long-term partner and manager John Reid (a very dashing and dastardly Richard Madden). This, plus the swearing and drug use,...

Taron Egerton does a good impression of the flamboyant musician in this sucrose treatment, a by-the-numbers approach authorised by Elton himself
Dexter Fletcher’s rousingly good natured Rocketman is the authorised-version movie about the legendary singer-songwriter Elton John: written by Lee Hall, produced by David Furnish and exec produced by the man himself. It’s had to follow the John Lewis Christmas TV ad that everyone loved, which delivered a very similar narrative in a miniaturised version; in fact there’s a moment here with Elton musingly picking out a single-finger tune that even appears to allude to that small-screen gem. Rocketman has also, in a way, had the burden of following or living up to Elton John’s sensational songs, the masterpieces which each seem like mini-movies in themselves – or at the very least the euphoric accompaniment to the most moving final montage you’ve ever seen.

Newly revealed “Rocketman” soundtrack details include a previously unannounced duet between the movie Elton John and the Og Elton John. John and his big-screen portrayer, Taron Egerton, team up on “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” which will likely play over the end credits, if its positioning as the final cut on a 22-song tracklist is any indication.
While the rest of the soundtrack was solely produced by Giles Martin, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” was coproduced by Martin with Greg Kurstin. Interscope, which is releasing the soundtrack, confirms that “Love Me Again” was freshly written for the movie. That makes it eligible for a best song Oscar, which would put it in a category that the otherwise nomination-hoarding “Bohemian Rhapsody” wasn’t able to compete in this past year, with its obviously all-catalog soundtrack.
