In late 2011, William Eubank took a job as second unit director of Allen Hughes’ Broken City. Hughes hired Eubank off of early footage from his feature directorial debut, Love (2011), which is a Kubrickian arthouse film that he made in collaboration with Tom DeLonge and his band Angels & Airwaves. The second-unit gig was especially meaningful because it not only landed Eubank his DGA card, but it also marked the beginning of his career-long trajectory with Broken City’s co-lead, Russell Crowe, who’s now leading his action-thriller, Land of Bad.
In 2016, while Crowe was on the promotional trail for Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, Eubank met up with him to discuss his now long-gestating fantasy actioner, World Breaker, however, despite Crowe’s interest at the time, the filmmaker was pulled away when Underwater got the green light from 20th Century Fox. "What if 'Succession' but Edgar Allan Poe?" is a pretty damn fine pitch for a horror series if you ask me, especially when it's coming from Mike Flanagan. The modern horror maestro has been a practical machine for Netflix these last several years, churning out hit after hit like "Gerald's Game," "The Haunting of Hill House," and "The Haunting of Bly Manor." He's since secured a deal to develop projects for Amazon Studios, but before he leaves, he's gifted Netflix with one final offering. Titled "The Fall of the House of Usher," the show sees Flanagan turning his eye to the works of the father of Gothic horror fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, as filtered through the modern-day world of cutthroat corporate culture and familial dynasties. So, yeah, it's "Succession" with a whole lot more literal bloodshed.

Mike Flanagan's grip on the horror genre will continue on Netflix this fall with The Fall of the House of Usher.
Netflix on Tuesday released the trailer for The Haunting of Hill House creator's next project.
The drama is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and follows the Usher family as "past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth."
It's a compelling hook and the official trailer promises we're in for a terrifying journey across eight episodes.
Will there be a way to stop this mysterious individual from the past, or will the Ushers realize that death is inevitable?
The footage raises many questions about the family's dealings, and truthfully, they may be one of the most despicable families on the small screen.

The first trailer for Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” has arrived, and it’s positively brimming with Poe. The limited series is set to premiere all eight episodes on Netflix on Oct. 12.
This first look jumps between several unsettling scenes, from lurking ravens to murderous ladies and seemingly other-worldly creatures. As Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) curtly reveals that the family will “exhaust our arsenal until the threat’s neutralized,” Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) pours over an active crime scene. "Stranger Things" might be Netflix's flagship show, but it turns out that Mike Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" is another crown jewel for the streamer. As you may already know, streamers don't release numbers as a general rule, but "Hill House" was known to be a big hit for Netflix upon release. Both critic and viewer ratings were through the roof and independent polling from Parrot Analytics in 2018 found the limited series was keeping pace with massive, long-running network horror shows like "The Walking Dead" and "American Horror Story."
But you just need to look at where Netflix put their money to tell you how big that show was for them. They went right into a spiritual sequel, "The Haunting of Bly Manor" and then greenlit "The Fall of the House of Usher" from the same Flanaverse team right after that. These are all tied together in...

Netflix has slated Thursday, October 12, for the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher, its eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The streamer also released some of the first images of the series, which you can see above and below.
Starring Bruce Greenwood, who replaced Frank Langella as the lead back in April 2022 after Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation, the series is described as an epic tale of greed, horror and tragedy. Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher, which serves as the basis for the show, features themes of madness, family, isolation and identity.
It’s been a long road for the series, which was halfway through production when Langella was fired and his scenes had to be reshot.

A subtle pattern emerged when reflecting upon the year’s standout horror moments and performances: it’s been one hell of a year for knockout monologues. A monologue relays vital information about the story or the character relaying it and supports its central themes, but there’s an art form to its delivery. Some of the most unforgettable performances of 2022 belonged to actors that delivered uncanny, showstopping monologues that glued us to our seats and left us in rapturous awe.

Even though the fireplace has been extinguished, the stories explored in Netflix’s “The Midnight Club” live on.

Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures have been behind several beloved horror-tinged Netflix series, including “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Midnight Mass,” as a result of their overall deal (now wrapping up as they head to Amazon Studios), but “The Midnight Club” marked the first show designed to be ongoing.

The Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong-created series “The Midnight Club” marked the first Netflix series for Flanagan that was intended to continue over multiple seasons, which meant that the inaugural season ended with multiple unresolved storylines and cliffhangers.
The news of the series cancellation leaves fans disappointed that those loose ends will remain unresolved, or does it?
Flanagan fulfilled his promise on Twitter not to leave fans hanging in the wake of the cancellation news, providing detailed plans for what we would’ve seen had season two come to pass.
In a blog post, Flanagan answers the mysteries of Dr. Stanton (Heather Langenkamp) and her ties to Brightcliffe Hospice’s cult past, the true identity of the Janitor (Robert Longstreet), what the Shadow is, and the fates of central characters introduced in the inaugural season.
More than wrapping up story threads, Flanagan reveals more Pike novels planned for the second season.

The Midnight Club, the latest series from genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan, is currently available to watch on the Netflix streaming service – and next up is the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher. Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for that one yet, but Flanagan took the opportunity to hype it up a bit during a recent interview with The Wrap… and even compared to the Giallo style!
Here’s what Flanagan had to say about The Fall of the House of Usher:
It’s crazy. It is unlike anything I’ve ever done, but in the other direction. My favorite way to describe it to people is like The Haunting of Hill House is kind of a string quartet, and The Haunting of Bly Manor is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and The Fall of the House of Usher...

Based on the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, Mike Flanagan‘s next series for Netflix is “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and it’s going to be unlike anything Flanagan has ever done before.
The limited series from Intrepid Pictures is “based on multiple works from Poe.” 8 episodes have been filmed, and Flanagan and Michael Fimognari each directed four episodes.
Flanagan tells The Wrap this week, “It’s crazy. It is unlike anything I’ve ever done, but in the other direction. My favorite way to describe it to people is like ‘Hill House’ is kind of a string quartet, and ‘Bly Manor’ is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is heavy metal. It’s rock and roll.”
“It’s the closest I will get to Giallo,” Flanagan adds.

This post contains spoilers for Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills.
When will evil die? That’s been the overarching question of the Halloween sequel trilogy that began with 2018’s Halloween, continued through 2021’s Halloween Kills, and completes this month with this Halloween Ends. The third movie’s title certainly sounds final, as if the lifelong murderer Michael Myers will be seeing his end. But its predecessor Halloween Kills featured a mob of Myers survivors chanting “evil dies tonight,” and still Myers lived. When will we get to learn if Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) can finally put an end to Myers’s killing spree? Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until October 31 to find out.
What Happened in the First Two Movies?
Halloween Ends is the third and final entry in a sequel trilogy from director David Gordon Green, who made his name with indie dramas such as George Washington and All the Real Girls,...

Plot: At a hospice with a mysterious history, the eight members of the Midnight Club meet each night at midnight to tell sinister stories – and to look for signs of the supernatural from the beyond.
Review: It probably goes without saying that at this point, people are going to watch The Midnight Club simply because Mike Flanagan’s name is attached to it. After the acclaim for The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor was met with a slightly less enthusiastic welcome. But, Flanagan’s Midnight Mass was a masterpiece of storytelling. If the pattern holds, The Midnight Club would be a weaker entry into the horror maestro’s oeuvre of shows. Luckily, I am glad to say that the series has broken expectations. The Midnight Club is nothing like any of Flanagan’s previous films or series but impresses nonetheless by combining an original...

Mike Flanagan is one of the most interesting and prolific horror filmmakers working right now, so much so that he's developed his own brand. Especially on Netflix, where he continues to create horror series that usually go over like gangbusters. His most recent show, "Midnight Mass," was one of his best yet. And, having followed hs career since his debut feature "Absentia," I consider myself a big Flanagan fan. So believe me when I say I take no pleasure in stating that Flanagan's latest, the Netflix series "The Midnight Club," is a bust.
Co-created with Leah Fong, "The Midnight Club" is inspired by the work of Christopher Pike, who was kind of like the dark shadow to R.L. Stine back in the day when YA horror paperbacks were all the rage. But while Stine trafficked in ghouls and ghosts (and the occasional serial killer), Pike's books were always weirder, going...

Approaching "The Haunting of Hill House" like a marathon feature film, writer-director Mike Flanagan aimed to retain as much of Shirley Jackson's bestselling story as much as possible, while expanding material -- the queer identity of Theodora, for example, could be more explicit than it could in 1959. But as with any Flanagan tale, every moment must justify itself and serve the greater story.
Monologues are vulnerable in the editing room due to their potential to lose viewer interest -- an actor has to really sell it for an audience to sit through a two or three minute speech. The "Oculus" director doesn't seem to mind; in fact, he tells Vulture that "a monologue paints a vivid mental picture if it's done right." "Hill House" features plenty of them, but one monologue was especially worth fighting for. He tells Vulture:
"I fought hard for each of the monologues in the show,...
