R.L. Stine fans, rejoice! We seem to be the middle of a renaissance for projects based on the writing of "The Stephen King of Kids Horror." Thanks to the popularity of Leigh Janiak's terrific "Fear Street" film trilogy, Netflix is reported to be cooking up even more movies based on Stine's slasher-mystery property. There's also a new live-action "Goosebumps" TV show in development at Disney+, which is already home to the lesser-known but genuinely sturdy "Just Beyond" anthology inspired by Stine's genre-blending graphic novel series of the same name.
Elsewhere, shooting is now underway on "Zombie Town," a film based on yet another one of Stine's horror books for younger readers. Published in 2012, the novel follows 12-year-old friends Mike and Karen as they head out to see the titular zombie flick in a theater, only for movie's brain-hungry monsters to lurch off the screen and begin wreaking havoc on their unsuspecting town.

Hot Docs has established the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Fund with a $1m gift from the Rogers Foundation.
The grant follows a $4m gift from the Rogers Foundation to purchase the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, the century-old theatre in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood that Hot Docs has operated, managed and programmed for the past four years.
Named after the late philanthropist and president and CEO of Rogers Communications, the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Fund will provide financial support to Canadian documentarians.
“Documentaries provide an urgently needed reflection of our society – warts and all,” said Hot Docs president Chris McDonald. “The Rogers Foundation’s generous support for doc makers recognises the depth of talent in this country, and provides them critical resources to tell their stories.”

★★★☆☆Making a successful feature length cartoon is a hard nut to crack. For every animated hit, a dozen sink without trace, relegated to being stuck on the DVD player just to keep the kids quiet on a wet afternoon. Fortunately, though clearly no Oscar contender, neither is Peter Lepeniotis' harmless The Nut Job (2014) a dud. Surly (Canadian comic actor Will Arnett) the squirrel has been banished from the rodent community in the inner-city park where he lives. Desperate to find food to survive on the mean city streets Surly, and his rat friend Buddy (Robert Tinkler), discover heaven - the seemingly abandoned Nut Shop. Unknown to them, however, the shop is cover for a group of desperate bank robbers.

You don't need to have a nut allergy to experience a bad reaction to this new animated comedy, which arrives on UK shores this week seven months after its initial run Stateside. Director Peter Lepeniotis expands his short Surly Squirrel, but even at an ever-so-brief 86 minutes, the story struggles to fill out its feature-length running time.
Will Arnett lends a Mafia wise guy-style twang to the voice of Surly, a purple squirrel who finds himself cast out from his park after destroying their winter food supply. Banished by leader Raccoon (Liam Neeson), Surly and his mute rat sidekick Buddy face gnarled rodents, a Pug called Precious (Maya Rudolph) and the mob (led by Stephen Lang) as they look for redemption by way of a giant nut heist.

In Oakton, purple squirrel Surly (Will Arnett) is banished from Liberty Park after accidentally destroying the community’s winter food supply. Accompanied by loyal sidekick Buddy, Surly lands on his feet when he discovers a nut shop around the corner from the park — stocking everything from peanuts to pistachios. Bank robbers are using the business as a front for their latest heist, and Surly must get passed their guard dog if he is to pull off his own. When Andie (Katherine Heigl) and Greyson (Brendan Fraser) are dispatched by Raccoon (Liam Neeson) to replace the lost food, it’s not long before they cross paths with Surly, and must ask for his help.

Update: The Nut Job is a Huge success, making more money in its opening weekend than any other indie animated film. So, of course, the companies behind the nutty film will make a sequel! Nothing else is secured, like if director Peter Lepeniotis or any of the stars will be back. When a movie is expected to be a success, usually they have the stars sign a contract promising to come back but with a small film made out of South Korea, I feel pretty certain they did Not make a deal for future films with the film's key voices, Katherine Heigl or Will Arnett.

You probably won't go nuts for this forgettable family fluff about a squirrel antihero named Surly (voiced by Will Arnett). When the rascally rodent accidentally destroys his tribe's food supply, he's banished from their city park home and hits the mean streets of fictional Oakton. He and mute rat friend Buddy soon stumble upon the mother lode, a nut store, but their plan to ransack the nut sacks coincides with another heist, involving humans. King (Stephen Lang) has assembled a team of bumbling robbers to tunnel under the store and into the bank vault across the street. Before you crack this Nut Job, check out these five facts: 1. Chicago – It feels like when any studio besides Walt Disney or Pixar does an animated film with celebrity voices, there is a little less lacquer on it. What the other two remember, and others forget, is that it starts with a script. All the toon landscapes in the world can’t fix a dull story.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
“The Nut Job” is a case in point. It looks lovely, with well-defined characters and scenic composition – set in the “Guys and Dolls” era of caper heists. But the story lacks substance or verve, and there were stretches of dead audience silence in the preview screening. Not a good sign, because the room was populated by the target audience of kiddies. Also, the film steals gags from the Warner Brothers era of cartoons, in more of a rip-off than a tribute. All these poisonous bits add up to a long 86 minutes. That’s right,...

The Nut Job
Directed by: Peter Lepeniotis
Cast: Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Katherine Heigl, Liam Neeson
Running Time: 1 hr 26 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: January 17, 2014
Plot: Rogue squirrel Surly (Arnett) discovers a nut shop that is also the front for an underground bank robbery.
Who’S It For? With its key demographics having already seen Frozen, the film may provide decent satiation for its crowd, but without any rich spectacle, only its animal-talking zaniness to carry it through an ironically turgid running time.
Overall
Looking back on the moment, it was probably intended by the Nut Job filmmakers that my Saturday morning screening of The Nut Job began with the image presented inescapably out of focus, in need of a restart that would repeat the film’s first five minutes. Even through squinted eyes, forever damaged by not being able to experience 3D even with the glasses on due to the film’s presentation itself,...

Underwhelming is the word for The Nut Job, an animated kidflick that’s nowhere in the same league as films like Despicable Me 2 or The Croods. Instead it’s more like last year’s Turbo or maybe Hotel Transylvania. Pixar aside, CG-animated films tend to be an interchangeable bunch. There’s invariably a gang of wiseacre animals, a starry cast and a climactic pursuit. The Nut Job doesn’t break the trend so much as tick every box, and while the film, based on director Peter Lepeniotis’ 2005 short “Surly Squirrel”, looks great and tries hard to earn our affection, its mediocre script and lack of memorable characters bring it down a few grades.
The story is set in fictional city of Oakton in the 1950’s, where a nut shortage is threatening the existence of the local park animals. Surly (gruffly voiced by Will Arnett) is a seasoned, tough-talking squirrel who,...

Will Arnett makes mischief as a cartoon squirrel named Surly but cartoon feature The Nut Job offers few laughs Director/co-writer Peter Lepeniotis dusts off his 2005 cartoon short Surly Squirrel and with the help of former Saturday Night Live comic Will Arnett updates the cartoon critter for The Nut Job, a feature-length adventure that borrows heavily from the DreamWorks Animation method of celebrity voice casts, four-legged heroes and enough silly slapstick for ten Looney Tunes shorts. Unfortunately, Lepeniotis’ first feature-length directing work (as well as the first animated feature from Open Road Films) fails to deliver any memorable laughs or an exciting climax that will make kids clamor for more Surly Squirrel adventures.

It was not long ago when Will Arnett mined gold with a curt, hilarious voice-acting role in Pixar’s Ratatouille as intimidating cook Horst, who brags about conquests of killing a man with his thumb. Well, Arnett’s thumb has about as much personality as his dithery voice in The Nut Job, a new animated film where the Canadian actor has the leading role. Here, however, he gives a rather unexpressive tone to Surly, a purple squirrel who is bossy, selfish and has little pity for anyone – even his mute, dependable rat sidekick, Buddy.
Surly is not just a bland protagonist, but he is intensely dislikable and Arnett’s smarmy voice does the protagonist no favors. By the film’s end, you wish that another of the actor’s characters, G.O.B. from Arrested Development, had passed you a “Forget-Me-Now” pill to remove this weak, children-aimed adventure from your memory.

This weekend, a brand-new animated comedy scampers into theaters with "The Nut Job," a furry take on the heist movie. Directed by Canadian animator Peter Lepeniotis (who has worked for both Disney and Pixar), "The Nut Job" is an adaptation of his 2005 short film "Surly Squirrel," this time expanded to feature-length and complete with an all-star cast that includes Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Katherine Heigl and Liam Neeson.
In our exclusive clip, introduced by the gloriously growly Arnett, you'll get a sense of the movie's chaotic energy (and appropriately nutty characters).

Who knew that in the city parks across America, all the furry vermin who skitter, forage and burrow exist in a grand interlocked society built around the process of collecting a communal horde for hibernation season? As nutty as that might sound (or not), it’s the crux of Peter Lepeniotis’s richly animated misadventure that evokes The Wind and the Willows (if funneled through a rigorous round of urban planning)....

The Nut Job is, oddly enough, an animated film that I’ve been looking forward to probably since long before it was even an idea. It was probably the release of Cars that got me thinking about animated films taking on classic genres of film, and a heist film seems a fair enough place to start.
The trailer manages to give us a good feel for what we’re getting into here, and even if it looks like we may lean a little heavily toward juvenile humor, there could be a pretty solid story here. Surly Squirrel (Will Arnett), a continuation from director Peter Lepeniotis’ 2005 short, is a squirrel with a lot of ideas. His wild machinations clearly get him into trouble at times, and his latest scheme seems to have caused widespread difficulty in the form of the destruction of much of the winter food supply. Now it’s time for a new plan,...

Will Arnett lends his voice to not one, but two animated blockbusters next year, and whilst all ears will be listening out for his role as Batman in The Lego Movie, he’ll first be heard leading the charge as Surly in Open Road’s The Nut Job.
The first teaser trailer launched a few weeks back, giving a great little introduction to Arnett’s leading squirrel. And after recently catching a new poster, the studio has released the first full-length trailer today, as promised, over on Fandango.
In animated 3D, “The Nut Job” is an action-packed comedy in fictional Oakton that follows the travails of Surly (voiced by Will Arnett), a mischievous squirrel, and his rat friend Buddy, who plan a nut store heist of outrageous proportions and unwittingly find themselves embroiled in a much more complicated and hilarious adventure.
