In 1989, Sam Kinison was riding high. As one of the most foul-mouthed funnymen to terrorize stages during the Golden Age of the Shock Comic, the hard-partying, beret-rocking dynamo was playing Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum and appearing on Married With Children and in Mötley Crüe's "Kickstart My Heart" video. (Rolling Stone also put him on the cover, dubbing him the "Beast of Comedy.") His gigs were part strip show, part heavy-metal concert, all primal-scream therapy. Rodney Dangerfield had championed him; Robin Williams and Howard Stern were fans. Three years later,...

Deadline is reporting that Josh Gad has signed on to play comedian Sam Kinison in the biopic Brother Kinison. The film was written by Rich Wilkes (xXx) based on the novel by Bill Kinison. Larry Charles (Borat) is set to direct with David Permut, Tom Shadyac and Bill Kinison on as executive producers. Steve Longi and Permut Presentations’ Chris Mangan will co-produce.
“There was nothing conventional about Sam Kinison and neither will be the cinematic interpretation of his life,” said Permut. “Larry Charles is the perfect director to bring Rich Wilkes’ incredible script to screen, and Josh Gad’s tremendous ability to morph into a role will bring great depth to Kinison’s larger than life persona.”

Seeing as Sam Kinison was one of the most influential and legendary standup comedians of all time, and also a man who engaged in a crazy, tumultuous lifestyle outside of his professional accomplishments, it seems like he would make a great subject for one of those melodramatic Hollywood biopics where some hopeful actor sports a ridiculous hairdo and apes said subject’s iconic affectations in order to make a play at golden statues and the accolades of their peers. At least that seems to be the hopes of director Larry Charles (Borat) and actor Josh Gad (1600 Penn), as Deadline is reporting they’re about to team up to bring a Kinison biopic to the big screen. The film, called simply Kinison, is based on the book “Brother Sam,” which was written by Bill Kinison and has been adapted for the screen by Airheads (most famously xXx, but let’s give the guy some credit) writer Rich Wilkes. From...

So how long has "Kinison" been kicking around? We first reported on it way back in 2008 when it was set up over at HBO with "American Splendor" team Shari Springer Bergman and Robert Pulcini tapped to adapt the book "Brother Sam" by the comedian's sibling Bill Kinison, with Tom Shadyac ("Bruce Almighty," "Liar Liar") set to the direct with Dan Fogler in the lead role. All was silent until a couple of years later, when it was revealed Shadyac was still attached, and he currently is— although only as a producer. A new writer, director and star are now moving the project along. Deadline reports that Larry Charles ("Borat," "Bruno," "The Dictator") is now at the helm with Josh Gad ("Jobs," "Love & Other Drugs," "The Internship") now set for the lead role, and a script provided by Rich Wilkes ("xXx," "Airheads"). The film will track Kinison's unexpected rise from Pentecostal...

Nearly three years ago, news surfaced of a biopic about the late, great comedian Sam Kinison coming from Bruce Almighty director Tom Shadyac. The film was originally slated for release on HBO, but then a theatrical release was also planned. Now the project is finally gaining steam again, but this time with new names attached. Deadline reports Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat and The Dictator director Larry Charles will be at the helm of the film based on the 1994 book Brother Sam: The Short, Spectacular Life of Sam Kinison by the comedian's brother Bill Kinison and Jobs co-star Josh Gad will be taking the lead. Read on! This project has been in the works for over ten years, and once started at Universal before arriving at HBO. This update from Deadline doesn't make any mention of the cable network though, so we're not sure if they're still involved. Shadyac will...

Hollywood has been trying to make a movie about stand-up comedian/ormer Pentecostal preacher/professional screamer Sam Kinison for years now, and today the project has taken two incredibly important steps forward. Deadline has learned that Larry Charles, the filmmaker behind movies such as Borat, Religulous and The Dictator, has been hired to direct the feature, while Josh Gad, the Tony-nominated star of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Broadway hit Book of Mormon, has been cast in the lead role. Based on the book Brother Sam by Bill Kinison (Sam's brother) and adapted by Rich Wilkes (xXx), the film will be titled Kinison and will begin in the early 80s as the comedian broke away from "the family business of Pentecostal preaching" and moved to Hollywood where he could start his career in stand up. By the mid-80s he was performing on Late Night with David Letterman and...

Exclusive: David Permut’s long in the works film about the late comic Sam Kinison has taken form. Larry Charles, who helmed the Sacha Baron Cohen comedies Borat, Bruno and The Dictator, has signed on to direct and Josh Gad is set to play the pentecostal preacher-turned-manic standup comedian. Kinison has a script by xXx scribe Rich Wilkes, based on the book Brother Sam by Bill Kinison. Permut will produce, Tom Shadyac and Bill Kinison will be exec producers, and Steve Longi and Permut Presentations’ Chris Mangano will co-produce. “There was nothing conventional about Sam Kinison and neither will be the cinematic interpretation of his life,” said Permut. “Larry Charles is the perfect director to bring Rich Wilkes’ incredible script to screen, and Josh Gad’s tremendous ability to morph into a role will bring great depth to Kinison’s larger than life persona.” The film picks up the Kinison story in the 80s,...

Josh Gad, who made a name for himself starring in the original Broadway production of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's "The Book of Mormon," is set to take the lead in director Larry Charles' Kinison , a biopic of the legendary standup comedian, Deadline reports. Scripted by Rich Wilkes ( xXx ), Kinison began as an HBO Films project titled Brother Sam that Tom Shadyac was, at one time, attached to direct with Dan Fogler formerly attached to the title role. Based on the memoir "Brother Sam: The Short, Spectacular Life of Sam Kinison" by Bill Kinison and Steve Delsohn, the film will chart Kinison's life as an evangelist through his rise as a comedian up until his tragic death in 1992. Gad can be seen on the big screen later this month as Steve Wozniak in...

Late comedian Sam Kinison fathered a lovechild, according to DNA tests obtained by a friend who has been paying child support for the girl for years.
The funnyman, who was joined by rockers including Steven Tyler and Billy Idol in his 1988 novelty cover of The Troggs' Wild Thing, died in a car crash in 1992.
Now his pal, comic Carl La Bove, is claiming Kinison slept with his wife more than 20 years ago and fathered a child with her.
La Bove has been paying maintenance for nearly 13 years after splitting from the girl's mother, but he has now filed legal papers claiming the child is Kinison's.
DNA tests taken from the funnyman's brother Bill allegedly show a 99.8 per cent likelihood the late TV star is the father of the unnamed offspring, who is now 21.
The test results also rule out any possibility La Bove is the father.
Bill Kinison says, "She looks like she'd be Sam's daughter. Sam and Carl lived a lifestyle that was pretty promiscuous... I'd want to get that off me too."...

In addition to being a hilarious comedian, Sam Kinison was a fascinating character. A former Pentecostal preacher, his loud, abusive style was unmatched, not to mention his trademark scream. Now Tom Shadyac wants to bring the Kinison experience to the big screen. Variety reports that the Ace Ventura: Pet Detective director, in conjunction with HBO Films, has begun developing a biopic about the late stand-up. Screenwriter Rich Wilkes (Airheads, xXx) has been hired to write the script, which will be based on the memoir Brother Sam: The Short Spectacular Life of Sam Kinison by Bill Kinison, Sam's brother, and Steve Delson. Shadyac has been trying to get the project made for the past ten years, first having the film set up at Universal before moving to HBO where it was going to be made as a TV movie. The big question is, of course, who they get to play Kinison.

No matter how praiseworthy HBO's forays into motion pictures might be, their films like Temple Grandin and You Don't Know Jack are almost always confined to the small screen. However, it looks like the story of the late, great comedian Sam Kinison is big enough to warrant a big screen release. Variety now reports the long-gestating biopic of Kinison not only has Tom Shadyac (Bruce Almight) attached to direct, but will also be given a theatrical release. Based on the 1994 book Brother Sam: The Short, Spectacular Life of Sam Kinison by the comedian's brother Bill Kinison, the film has been in the works for about ten years. Shadyac and producer David Permut have had the project had been set up at Universal for years until they took the project to HBO Films as a TV movie. That was back in 2008 when Dan Fogler (Fanboys, Balls of ...

Sam Kinison may have gotten his start on the small screen, but a long-gestating biopic of the late comedian is now headed to the big one. HBO Films has attached Tom Shadyac ("Bruce Almighty") to direct a feature film based on the memoir "Brother Sam: The Short, Spectacular Life of Sam Kinison" by Bill Kinison and Steve Delson, reports Variety. Rich Wilkes ("The Jerky Boys") will write the screenplay, which will follow Kinison from his childhood as the son of a preacher and track his rise to fame as one of the...
