Director Rod Lurie, an Army veteran and West Point alum, drew upon his years of military experience while making “The Outpost,” a war film based on Jake Tapper’s book about the Battle of Kamdesh, during which a few dozen Americans were ambushed by hundreds of Taliban soldiers in Afghanistan.
“I’m a military guy, I served a long time ago,” Lurie told TheWrap’s Steve Pond as part of TheWrap’s Screening Series. “Anybody who has any connections in the military was very well aware of this just absolutely incredible f—ing battle.”
He continued, “I was approached about [the film] by a producer named Paul Merriman, who was sort of controlling a screenplay written by Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson based on the book by Jake Tapper. And this subject matter is what completely drew me in. There’s no filmmaker who has served in the military [who] wouldn’t want to make this particular film.

“He was the same age as the men who died in the Battle of Kamdesh,” reveals “The Outpost” director Rod Lurie about the tragic loss of his son Hunter Lurie, who died during production of the film at 27 years of age, like many of the men who were killed in action in Afghanistan. We talked with Lurie as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with key 2021 guild and Oscar contenders. Watch our interview above.
“When you’re making the film, it’s for not just me but all the Gold Star families who were behind us and everybody on the crew and the actors and military personnel who were there, there was this galvanizing effect,” Lurie explains when reflecting on how his son impacted the making of this deeply personal film. “We had no money. Vikings Season 6 Episode 17
“Of course I do not trust them; they lie about everything.”
While there’s little question it’s King Harald’s mission to conquer Wessex that garners the bulk of our attention in this episode, it’s the final gasp of Ubbe and the Greenland survivors that captures the indomitable spirit of the Vikings. During Vikings six year run, we’ve witnessed unspeakably horrific acts both on the battlefield and behind closed doors, but “The Raft of Medusa” demands we glimpse another dark side of the human condition that transcends the physical plane and puts on display the human cost of the desire for greatness.
It’s easy to forget the consistent excellence Vikings displays in both its extended battle sequences and individual combat fights, and while the brief three minute skirmish between Ivar’s troops and Wessex’s soldiers continues that trend,...

Vikings Season 6 Episode 14
“We should never forget our past. Ever.”
Perhaps Gunnhild says it best when she confides in her dead husband Bjorn that “the time for great heroes is over,” a statement that speaks to the loss of direction so many of the characters now experience as the Viking age reaches a crossroads. “Lost Souls” journeys through a complicated tangle of feelings that focus on the leadership vacuums a new world order sets into motion. Despite all of the upheaval, Vikings continues its string of solid episodes and deftly previews the impending battles in Rus and on the land settled by Ubbe and the Icelanders.

Keep your eyes peeled for a potential awards ambush by under-the-radar war film “The Outpost” at the Golden Globes and Oscars. While the film is currently lingering outside the upper echelons of contenders according to our combined odds, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and motion picture academy love war movies, and if enough of those voters see the film, they might find it hard to resist this 2020 success story.

“Death is universal, tears are universal. Everybody cries, everybody dies,” laments “The Outpost” director Rod Lurie about “Everybody Cries,” the song that he co-wrote with the film’s composer Larry Groupe and actress/singer/songwriter Rita Wilson.
The song features prominently throughout the film as an expression of grief and sorrow and ultimately acceptance of the inevitable need to move forward. It was particularly personal for Lurie, who tragically lost his son Hunter Lurie, who suddenly died during filming at 27 years of age, the same age as many of the men depicted in the film who were killed in action. “This is the defining moment of my life. For the rest of my life I’ll be finding purpose for my son,” Lurie admits when talking about how that profound loss will always be with him. Watch our exclusive video interview with the trio above.

“Condor,” which originally aired on AT&T’s Audience Network, will move to Epix for its second season.
The thriller series is based on the novel “Six Days of the Condor.” The first season will air on Epix in March, with Season 2 coming later in 2021.
In January, WarnerMedia shuttered AT&T Audience Network, which was home to series including “Loudermilk” and “Mr. Mercedes,” and instead turned it into a promotional network for HBO Max. Peacock picked up the first two seasons of “Mr. Mercedes” earlier this year, but has no plans to continue the the Stephen King-inspired series.
WarnerMedia made a similar move with Cinemax and turned that into a movie-centric network.
Here’s the logline for “Condor”: Joe Turner (Max Irons) has always been conflicted about his work for the CIA. But when something he’s discovered gets his entire office killed, leaving Joe as the only survivor...

The Outpost is one of the more underrated films of the year. Rod Lurie’s war epic is distinctive, visceral, and a true experience that honors soldiers, while remaining clear eyed about whether they should be in danger in the first place. It’s truly an achievement by Lurie. Now, in honor of Veteran’s Day, the flick is returning to theaters for a special engagement, with added footage, making this a new Director’s Cut. For those who haven’t seen the work yet, it’s truly something, and where available, definitely benefits from top notch sound. A bit more about it can be found below… This is what I had to say about the movie when it first came out in my rave review: “Rod Lurie has a palpable passion for the material, without question, and that helps set it apart. Lurie has always impeccably cast his flicks,...

In addition to sharing that image, Gaiman, who also created the show and serves as executive producer on it, wrote a letter to the fans, in which he addressed the timeliness of the forthcoming season’s plot, which is set to include more of a focus on immigrants and diversity.
“The struggles of the gods and the people in Season 3 of ‘American Gods’ are the struggles of America,” Gaiman wrote. “We didn’t think it would prove as timely when we plotted it, nor did I think the novel would still be relevant when I wrote it over 20 years ago. Steven Soderbergh has revealed a sequel to The Knick is in the works centered on André Holland’s Dr. Algernon C. Edwards character. The original series ended after two seasons on Cinemax in 2015, but was not officially canceled until two years later, in 2017. There had long been speculation about a possible new installment. Clive Owen, who headlined the first two seasons of the medical drama, had said that he was done at the end of the second season, though the network had left the door slightly open for a new season with a new lead actor. (Owen’s character died at the end of Season 2.)
Now in an interview with The Playlist, Soderbergh confirmed a pilot script has been written by The Knick creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, with input from The Knick co-star Holland, who would reprise his role, and filmmaker Barry Jenkins.

Rod Lurie’s Afghanistan war thriller, based on the book by CNN host Jake Tapper and which Deadline’s Pete Hammond lauded as the equal of modern classics like Dunkirk or The Hurt Locker, was the No. 1 movie on iTunes on its opening day Friday. Its distributor is Screen Media, the longtime specialty outfit acquired by Csse in 2017.
Originally, Screen Media had planned to premiere The Outpost at South by Southwest and then give it a nationwide theatrical run via Fathom, but Covid-19 upended the strategy. John Lewis has always been fighting for civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration. He’s been doing it for over 60 years so to say that his narrative is relevant more now than ever is a wild understatement.
In the documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble, director Dawn Porter chronicles Lewis’s life via interviews with the 80-year-old advocate who is just as active now as he was 60 years ago. Through rare archival footage, Porter puts a long-overdue spotlight on Lewis taking us on a journey through his childhood experiences, his inspiring family, his activism during the Civil Rights movement and his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957. We also get to hear from political leaders, his Congressional colleagues and those who have been with Lewis on his journey during his life and his career.

You might expect director Rod Lurie (West Point class of 1984 with four years in military service) to push the flag-waving aspect of a film about the war in Afghanistan. Though The Outpost pays heartfelt tribute to the soldiers who fought and died during the bloody 2009 Battle of Kamdesh, he opens fire on the military hubris and stupidity that put these soldiers there in the first place. While President Obama talked of withdrawing troops, Army brass ordered a small unit of 53 U.S. soldiers to hold down Camp Outpost Keating, located...

In this current age, the war film as a piece of genre filmmaking has grown complicated. For every “America First”-heavy remake like last year’s Midway, there is something like this year’s The Outpost, directed by Rod Lurie. Based on the Jake Tapper book, this is an attempt to explore the hypocrisies of the Military Industrial Complex while also celebrating those working within the system. It’s no small task, and one Lurie succeeds at in fits and spells.
The difficulty here, as with many a modern war film, is tone. There is an impetus to honor these soldiers while also criticizing the framework that led them into what is essentially a deathtrap in the middle of Afghanistan. Screenwriters Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy do their damndest to thread the needle, but the results do wear a bit thin.

A little more than an hour into Rod Lurie’s “The Outpost,” an American soldier wakes up in a remote camp in the hills of northern Afghanistan and grumbles, “Just another f—ing day in Afghanistan.”
But the day in question is Oct. 3, 2009 — and as “The Outpost” makes unforgettably clear, it was anything but just another day.
A riveting combat movie that aims to put viewers alongside American soldiers in the midst of one of the bloodiest battles in the long-running war, “The Outpost” takes the measure of what a few dozen men endured and finds heroism not in enemies killed but in compadres saved.
In telling the story of an attack by hundreds of Taliban fighters on 53 U.S. soldiers, the film delivers one of the most harrowing combat sequences in recent memory; the sustained assault, which nearly destroyed the outpost, occupies most of the film’s final hour...

Just a few minutes past the midway mark of “The Outpost,” director Rod Lurie re-creates the Battle of Kamdesh, and for nearly the next hour of this intense, immersive modern-day combat thriller, audiences experience how it must feel to be caught in a sustained Taliban siege on a virtually indefensible location in Afghanistan.
Situated at the bottom of three tall mountains in hostile territory, exposed to daily attack from all sides, Combat Outpost Keating represents a terrifying example of an indefensible military position — what children, in their playground games, proverbially refer to as “the mush pot.” Adults might call it a suicide mission. And yet, on Oct. 3, 2009, 53 American soldiers found themselves trapped in this Afghan Alamo, swarmed by an estimated 400 enemy forces, in what would become one of the deadliest confrontations the Army sustained in the region.

The war in Afghanistan has not gotten much cinematic attention. Whether it’s because of films concentrating on the Iraq War more, the relatively recent nature of the conflict, or the inherent messiness of it all, there’s just a hole in the culture. Enter in Rod Lurie, who saw something in The Outpost, coming out of the Jake Tapper book The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor. The end result is not just one of Lurie’s best works, but a movie that is equally clear-headed about the war, while always being respectful to the individuals who were on the front lines. Hitting some theaters, as well as On Demand services this weekend, it’s one of the best efforts of the year, so far. This film is a war drama, depicting the events of the Battle of Kamdesh, what would be the bloodiest American engagement of the...

Next week, one of the first movies to debut as theaters reopen will be The Outpost, an adaptation of Jake Tapper’s book that tells the true story of the U.S. soldiers who battled a Taliban attack on their camp in a mountainous remote area of northeastern Afghanistan. The project, directed by Rod Lurie, tells of the soldiers’ risky assignment at Combat Outpost Keating, made all the more dangerous by the placement of the camp in a valley surrounded by the steep terrain. But it was an element of a counter-insurgency strategy, as the outpost was close to the border with Pakistan. Eight Americans died in the attack, but by the end of the day, the soldiers regained control. Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha and Staff Sgt. Ty Carter were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions during the battle. Starring Scott Eastwood, Caleb Landry Jones and Orlando Bloom,...

Rod Lurie is an incredibly underrated director. In particular, his three political films in The Contender, Deterrence, and Nothing but the Truth, really are phenomenal works. Catching up on an exciting new Trailer from earlier in the week, we have Lurie’s latest movie, the Afghanistan war drama The Outpost. Not only is the Trailer quite intriguing, the flick itself has the added bonus of planning to actually play in theaters in early July. More on that in a few short paragraphs, and of course you can see the Trailer below. First, though, lets talk about the project a little bit. The film is a war drama, centered on a small team of U.S. soldiers battling against hundreds of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, culminating in what would be the most violent skirmish in that war. Here’s the official description: “In this military thriller, based on The New York Times best-selling non-fiction book,...

Screen Media announced today the acquisition of all U.S. rights to the feature film The Outpost, based on The New York Times best-selling non-fiction book, The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor from CNN’s Jake Tapper.
In this military thriller, a tiny unit of U.S. soldiers, alone at the remote Combat Outpost Keating, located deep in the valley of three mountains in Afghanistan, battles to defend against an overwhelming force of Taliban fighters in a coordinated attack. The Battle of Kamdesh, as it was known, was the bloodiest American engagement of the Afghan War in 2009 and Bravo Troop 3-61 Cav became one of the most decorated units of the 19-year conflict.
The film was set to have its world premiere at the South by Southwest Festival before the event was cancelled. Screen Media will release the film around the July 4th weekend.

Screen Media has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to “The Outpost,” a war film starring Scott Eastwood, Caleb Landry Jones and Orlando Bloom that is based on Jake Tapper’s nonfiction book, the distributor announced Monday.

There, 53 American soldiers as part of Bravo Troop 3-61 Cav squared off against over 400 Taliban fighters in what was known as The Battle of Kamdesh. A sense of dread permeates every frame of Disappearance at Clifton Hill, a noir type tale that evokes an hypnotic mood from start to finish. Now, this isn’t your traditional film noir, trafficking in cliches and men gritting their teeth. No, this has a female centric true north, making the investigator/protagonist a woman, and it pays dividends. Whenever you can upend a genre, even in a small way, it matters. Plus, when you have a high quality lead performance to latch on to, that helps as well. Hitting theaters this weekend, the movie is an independent effort that has large ambitions. To its credit, they mostly pay off. The film is a mystery/thriller, though largely content to be a character based drama with ominous moments. After an intense prologue, we move to the present day.
