Clive Cussler, the bestselling author whose novels Raise the Titanic! and, much to his greater disappointment, Sahara, were made into movies, died Monday at his home in Scottsdale, Az. He was 88.
His death was announced by his wife, Janet Horvath, on the author’s official Twitter page. No cause of death was given.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news that my husband Clive passed away Mon.,” Horvath wrote. “It has been a privilege to share in his life. I want to thank you his fans & friends for all the support. He was the kindest most gentle man I ever met.I know, his adventures will continue.”
Although he wrote more than 80 books — with a specialty in action, adventure and undersea stories — Cussler is best known in Hollywood for the two novels that didn’t make particularly good movies. The 2005 film Sahara starring Matthew McConaughey...

So inept a film, so bland and monotonous, that it fails even to serve as the blatant ad for the certain Christian motivational book it would appear to be. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

The thriller Raise The Titanic was a $40m flop in 1980, its model Titanic alone costing millions. Ryan charts the replica's sad history...
By autumn 1977, author Clive Cussler was the toast of the publishing world. Following a decade of writing and two moderately successful novels, his third book, Raise The Titanic! was a runaway bestseller. Its popularity was a contrast to Cussler's earlier books, which had earned him a relatively meagre $5,000. But those earlier adventures - The Mediterranean Caper and Iceberg - helped establish the daring hero Dirk Pitt, a practical, earthy hero designed as a counterpoint to the suave, refined James Bond.
For Raise The Titanic!, Cussler dreamed up a scenario in which Pitt headed up a multi-billion-dollar operation to find and recover the doomed luxury liner, which sank in 1912. Their goal: to recover a mysterious, incredibly rare substance called byzantium from the ship's belly - a...

Though a name that may escape you, director Jerry Jameson has forged quite the career for himself on the smaller screen, as the man behind a plethora of TV series and movies dating back to the 1970s. Oyelowo follows his Selma star turn in Jerry Jameson’s sluggish drama about a man on the run who takes a meth addict hostage
Martin Luther King: tough act to follow. After David Oyelowo’s commanding Selma turn, here’s an unpersuasive attempt to bolster the actor’s multiplex profile: a threadbare based-on-true-events thriller that unpacks, in utterly functional manner, the mystery of Brian Nichols, an escaped convict driven to take recovering addict Kate Mara hostage. TV veteran Jerry Jameson’s sluggish direction becomes no more animated once the cops arrive; everyone’s left sitting around waiting for revelation or redemption, while the uninflected quotation of religiose self-help guru Rick Warren reaches out towards the lucrative faith-movie demographic. The actors are committed – Mara, generally waif-like, appears frail indeed – but there’s barely anything worth committing to.

As bland as its title, Captive is an indifferent home invasion thriller in which a drug-addicted single mom is held hostage by a desperate man who’d just murdered four people. Hostage movies follow such age-old patterns that it’s rare to be surprised by one and Captive is no exception. Occasionally the genre will be transformed by brilliant filmmaking, as it was in something like The Desperate Hours or Dog Day Afternoon. Not this time. The true subject should have been given energy but all I felt while watching Captive was a big yawn.
Taking place over a single day, Captive closely follows an event that took place in Atlanta in 2005. Brian Nichols (played by David Oyelowo) was on trial for rape when he overpowered and beat a female guard, then took her gun. He calmly walked into a courtroom and fatally shot a judge and a court reporter...

In March 2005, Ashley Smith was held hostage in her apartment by Brian Nichols, an escaped killer hell-bent on seeing his newborn son. As Nichols kept Smith captive for seven hours, the pair slowly came to a crossroads between hope and despair. Smith had bonded with Nichols by reading aloud Rick Warren’s best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life.
The new film, Captive, based on Smith’s account of the ordeal in her book Unlikely Angel, tells the story of how this one-time meth addict overcame her vices to survive through the worst night of her life and forge a new, productive path for herself. The film features standout performances from Kate Mara as Ashley Smith and David Oyelowo as Brian Nichols.

David Oyelowo is a conflicted killer on the run from police in a new trailer for Captive.
Oyelowo's latest role in hostage drama Captive is a far cry from his inspirational portrayal of Dr Martin Luther King Jr in Selma.
The actor plays accused rapist Brian Nichols in a story based on real events documented in the non-fiction book An Unlikely Angel.
Nichols went on a killing spree while escaping a courthouse during his rape trial, and took a hostage in the form of a young single mother (Kate Mara).
Directed by Jerry Jameson, Captive documents a police manhunt for Nichols as his hostage simply tries to stay alive.
David's wife Jessica Oyelowo, Michael K Williams and Mimi Rogers also star in Captive, opening on September 18 in the Us. A UK release is yet to be set.

"I had to break out..." Paramount has debuted a trailer for the new film Captive, based on the true "Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero". Kate Mara plays a struggling single mother who's taken hostage when the "courthouse killer" from Atlanta finds his way into her apartment. David Oyelowo plays Brian Nichols. But the happy side of the story is that Ashley was able to talk her captor into "surrendering peacefully by gaining his confidence through her prayers and personal faith". Oh boy. Aside from that side of this story, this looks interesting. And I'll watch David Oyelowo in anything - he's such an immensely talented actor. Here's the first official trailer for Jerry Jameson's Captive, in high def from Apple: In this fact-based thriller, a single mother (Kate Mara) struggling with drug addiction is randomly taken hostage in her own apartment by a man (David Oyelowo) on...

The rise of the award-winning David Oyelowo continues with the news that Paramount Pictures has snapped up the global distribution rights to the Selma star’s latest film, Captive. The story is based on the real events that are told in the book Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero, by Ashley Smith and Stacy Mattingley.
Kate Mara (House Of Cards) plays the lead role of Ashley Smith – a single mother struggling with drug addiction and a battle for custody of her daughter. Smith is thrust into the spotlight, however, when prison escapee Brian Nichols forces his way into her apartment and holds her captive for seven hours. Nichols had been awaiting trial for multiple counts of kidnapping, assault and rape of a former girlfriend, when he overpowered law enforcement officers in the courthouse and shot the judge – Rowland Barnes – and a court reporter named Julie Brandau.

Paramount Pictures has just announced they have picked up and will distribute Captive, a new drama starring David Oyelowo (Selma) and Kate Mara ("House of Cards", Fantastic Four), directed by Jerry Jameson. The film is based on the book "Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero" by Ashley Smith with Stacy Mattingly telling the story of Smith (Mara), a single mother struggling to overcome her drug addiction and attempting to regain custody of her six-year-old daughter. Her world, however, goes dark when she is taken hostage by fugitive, murderer and accused rapist Brian Nichols (Oyelowo) for seven hours in her suburban Atlanta apartment. Armed with only her faith in God and the book "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren, she is able to survive the ordeal, changing both her and Nichols forever. The film co-stars Michael Kenneth Williams, Mimi Rogers, Leonor Varela and Oyelowo's wife, Jessica Oyelowo.

Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.

Kurt Russell Teaches Us The Art Of The Steal
By Alex Simon
If you’re a guy of a certain age (think Gen X), Kurt Russell was that actor you discovered as a child who wasn’t just a familiar face on the big and small screen, he was your buddy you grew up with. Not a peer, necessarily, but the cool, slightly older kid who lived next door who you just knew, if you played your cards right, you might grow up to be: handsome, self-assured in sports, with girls and in your place on the planet. Especially if you could hang out with him on a regular basis and learn the tricks to his magic, and magic was something Kurt Russell had from the beginning.

While actor Michael K. Williams takes some time off from portraying old timey gangster Chalky White on “Boardwalk Empire,” he's decided to change up his loyalties by playing a lead detective in a new crime thriller based on a true story. Directed by Jerry Jameson, “Captive” sees Williams joining a cast that already includes David Oyelowo, Kate Mara, Leonor Varela and Mimi Rogers. The movie follows a single mom who's taken hostage by a murderer after struggling to gain custody of her daughter and battle her drug addiction. Good lord! The drama, written by Brian Bird and Reinhard Denke, starts shooting in North Carolina this weekend, and while we'll watch Williams in just about anything, at least here he's backed by a considerable cast as well. Interestingly enough, buried at the bottom of the article is confirmation of a rumor that's been floating around for a few months: Williams also has a role in.

Exclusive: While Michael K. Williams‘ Chalky White character seems to be becoming a larger presence on each season of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire (I am most certainly not complaining), he’s found a movie to do during his hiatus. Williams signed with Bn Films to join Captive, the thriller directed by Jerry Jameson and written by Brian Bird and Reinhard Denke. Williams joins David Oyelowo, Kate Mara, Leonor Varela and Mimi Rogers. The film is a fictionalized thriller based on a well-known true story. While Ashley Smith, a single mom, struggles to overcome her drug addiction to regain custody of her daughter, she’s taken hostage by an escaped, quadruple murderer. Her only defenses: faith in God, a love for her daughter, and the book A Purpose Driven Life, parts of which she reads aloud to her captor during the harrowing ordeal. This leads to a surprising epiphany for both Ashley and the convict.

David Oyelowo and Kate Mara have snagged lead roles in the upcoming real-life thriller Captive, which is currently set to be helmed by TV directing veteran Jerry Jameson (Murder, She Wrote).
In Captive, Oyelowo portrays Brian Nichols, who in 2005 escaped from a courthouse jail and went on a shooting spree, killing the judge assigned to oversee his case as well as a court reporter, a sheriff’s deputy and (later) an FBI officer. Fleeing law enforcement, Nichols forced his way into the home of single mother and meth addict Ashley Smith (Mara), holding her hostage at gunpoint. The film will begin production this month, with Leonor Valera and Mimi Rogers set to co-star.
Smith’s struggle to survive is entailed in her autobiography Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of The Atlanta Hostage Hero, which the film’s screenplay was partially adapted from by writer Brian Bird (Touched by an Angel) and newcomer Reinhard Denke.

Both David Oyelowo and Kate Mara have been on a promising rise to leading man and woman status. Oyelowo is coming off a solid performance in Lee Daniels' The Butler with Christopher Nolan's Interstellar in his future while Kate Mara has "House of Cards" on her resumé and Wally Pfister's Transcendence lined up. Now the two rising stars will team up for a real-life thriller called Captive from director Jerry Jameson, who's known better for his TV work on shows like "Murder, She Wrote" and "Dallas" but has also directed films like Raise the Titanic. This new feature sounds like it could raise a lot of acclaim with an engaging story straight from the headlines that seems fit for the film festival circuit. So what's the story? Crime dramas based on real-life cases have to hew a careful line when dealing with their subject matter. It’s also important to find the right cast, and director Jerry Jameson has some solid choices in David Oyelowo, Kate Mara, Mimi Rogers and Leonor Varela for Captive. With a script by Brian Bird and Reinhard Denke adapted from Ashley Smith’s memoir An Unlikely Angel, Captive finds Oyelowo as Brian Nichols, a prisoner who broke out of a courthouse jail cell in Atlanta in 2005, shot dead the judge and several others in the court and fled.Hiding out from a manhunt, he took Smith hostage in her own apartment. The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

To have one giant money-losing tentpole is unfortunate. To have two starts to look careless, and that's what's happened to Taylor Kitsch. The actor, who broke out on TV's "Friday Night Lights," was seen as Hollywood's next great hope, picked out to star in two great big blockbusters with a combined cost of half-a-billion dollars. But when "John Carter" arrived in March, the film wildly underperformed, with Disney taking a hit of at least $100 million on the project. And after this weekend, it looks that his other film, "Battleship," is going to lose similar amounts.
The film, Universal & Hasbro's adaptation of the board game, directed by "Hancock" helmer Peter Berg, had taken the unusual step of opening everywhere else in the world six weeks ahead of the U.S, in the hope of bagging lucrative foreign coin and building buzz for the U.S. release. In 1970, one movie invented the modern disaster film. After grossing more than $100 million at the domestic box office (adjusted for inflation, it made more than any of the "Lord of the Rings"), it spawned three sequels that stretched through the entire decade. But this landmark series is now almost totally forgotten, long eclipsed by the film that so brilliantly spoofed the genre tropes it helped define. In honor of its 40th anniversary, we're looking back at the "Airport" franchise this week, one film at a time. Today, "Airport '77" which is basically "The Poseidon Adventure" on a plane.
