It’s been a headline-making weekend at the Kelly-Giffords household in Tucson, Arizona.
The couple celebrated the news Friday that Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly had been re-elected to his first full term representing Arizona, winning a tight contest with Republican Blake Masters. The film from Oscar nominees Julie Cohen and Betsy West, documents Giffords’ arduous rehabilitation from a near-fatal shooting in January 2011, a tragic event that stopped her ascent as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

Legend has it that one filet of sole with lemon and butter altered the path of Julia Child’s life. With one omelette, she set in motion a change of the kitchen culture in America. Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s mouthwatering Oscar-shortlisted documentary Julia (a highlight of the 20th edition of Doc NYC and executive produced by Oren Jacoby) implicitly gives credit to this fish and these hens, and explicitly to the woman who appreciated so much the culinary treasures they had to offer. Seen on camera praising Julia Child and giving great insight into the hidden world of French kitchens is her friend Danièle Delpeuch, personal chef to former French President François Mitterand.

With Labor Day so close, and if you’d didn’t feel confident about a summer vacation, then here’s a bit of help in planning a Fall getaway. Sure, this could be considered a feature-length travelogue, but it’s a whole lot more than that. It’s certainly a history lesson with lots of “talking heads” sharing great insights and anecdotes. But really it’s a celebration and appreciation of a place we might not have fully embraced until it was withheld from us for nearly a year and a half. Ah, but it’s officially reopening this month, so prior to your travel itinerary why not head off to the local multiplex for a look back on all the wonders to be savored On Broadway.

They say the neon lights are bright,
on Broadway.
They say there’s always magic in the air…
Let's be thankful that On Broadway doesn’t open with those famous lyrics from the song of the same name. Bob Fosse already did that, using George Benson’s funk-inspired 1978 rendition to launch All That Jazz over images of a throng of auditioning theatre wannabes. It’s showtime, folks, and that song is a hell of an introduction, but it's been done.
The release of Oren Jacoby’s doc feels perfectly timed, having been completed and screened at the Hamptons International Film Festival back in 2019 but delayed for general release until now as the city is on the verge of re-opening to crowds...

A promotional video writ large, “On Broadway” feels like the kind of hotel programming a tourist might find playing on a loop at the Times Square Marriott Marquis.
Brought to the screen by film and theater director Oren Jacoby (“Constantine’s Sword”) and produced by Broadway insiders, this earnest but oddly superficial documentary zips through decades of artistic impact without taking enough time to create its own memorable impression.
All the elements are there, beginning with an ostentatiously celestial range of talking heads. Alec Baldwin, Helen Mirren, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, John Lithgow, James Corden, Christine Baranski and others show up briefly, each delivering a pithy statement about how important The Theater is. Only a few — including Tommy Tune and George C. Wolfe — get a chance to say anything truly noteworthy or unexpected. For the most part, it seems we’re supposed to be impressed by their mere presence.

After charting Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s rise to the top of the legal world, the filmmaking team behind “Rbg” is reuniting to tell the story of a different kind of trailblazer: Julia Child, the television chef and cookbook author who taught America how to eat.

We can assume that all the Tony nominees hope to hear their names announced this Sunday from the stage of Radio City Musical Hall. But while playwright Kenneth Lonergan says it would be nice if “The Waverly Gallery” wins Best Revival of a Play, he mostly hopes to hear the name of his 87-year-old leading lady.

Lonergan himself is no stranger to awards, winning a screenwriting Oscar for 2016’s “Manchester by the Sea,” but he has never won the Tony. He is also no stranger to controversy, particularly when it comes to his relationship with Hollywood. Since famously...

Shadowman, directed by Oren Jacoby, screens Friday January 12th through Sunday January 14th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). The movie starts each evening at 7:30pm.
In the 1980s, Richard Hambleton was the Shadowman, a specter in the night who painted hundreds of startling silhouettes on the walls of lower Manhattan and, along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, sparked the street art movement. After drug addiction and homelessness sent him spinning out of the art scene for 20 years, the Shadowman gets a second chance…but will he take it? Shadowman plunges the viewer into the chaotic life of a forgotten artist, from early fame as a painter and denizen of the Lower East Side, through his struggles with heroin, to his surprising comeback as street art exploded to become one of the most popular and lucrative art movements in the world.

One of the most celebrated street artists of the 1980s, Richard Hambleton created a collection of equally eccentric and harrowing work that decorated the walls, alleyways and sidewalks of New York City. Along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hambleton was an unrivaled challenging artist and, as his contemporaries tragically died before middle age, one of its remaining beacons of inspiration. While known for his “murder art” — chalk outlines of fictitious crime scenes splattered with red paint resembling blood — and his Marlboro Man paintings crafted from a thick tar-like substance, Hambleton’s most iconic pieces serve as the namesake of Oren Jacoby’s new documentary in theaters this week. Debuting […]...

Chicago – The 16th Tribeca Film Festival wrapped last Sunday (April 30, 2017) and the award-winning films of the festival have been named. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com was there for the first week of Tribeca and files his personal best of the films he experienced.
This is Patrick switching to first person, and I was able to see 13 media and film works, and took a turn in the “Immersive” or Virtual Reality arcade (there will a separate article on that experience). I sampled TV, short films, documentaries and narrative films, and rank them from first preferred on down, but honestly I didn’t see anything that I didn’t like, which is a testament to the programmers of this iconic film festival.
The following are the prime 13, and an indication of when they are scheduled to release…

Oren Jacoby’s documentary Shadowman chronicles the life and career of Richard Hambleton, one of three figures who dominated the outsider art scene in 1980s New York. But unlike his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who, as one of the film’s commentators waggishly puts it, each made the “good career move” of dying young, Hambleton squandered his success with a crippling drug addiction. The doc, receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, achieves its goal of shining a spotlight on its subject while delivering a fascinating true-life tale.

Before Bansky, there was Richard Hambleton. In the ’80s, Hambleton’s “spooky” silhouette paintings —which looked like someone’s shadow and which he drew late at night— appeared on the sides of Manhattan buildings. Regarded as a genius of his time, as his work was on the rise in both demand and value. Hambleton fell victim to drug addiction and became homeless. Twenty years later, the artist is rediscovered and presented with the opportunity to redeem himself.

NEW YORK -- The intelligent and subtly enunciated documentary "Constantine's Sword," written and presented by a former Catholic priest, explores the institutionalized persecution of Jews by the Christian church from Roman times to today. A parallel theme, tied to evangelical proselytizing on the U.S. Air Force Academy, highlights the danger of allowing religion to become involved in politics.
It's a quiet, well-researched film that demonstrates good journalistic credentials. Considering the global resurgence of religious influence, the film could attract progressive audiences in small urban theaters. "Constantine's Sword" is a cut above most TV documentaries, so should also do well on the small screen.
Directed by Oren Jacoby, the documentary is pegged to the experiences of narrator James Carroll. Carroll, the son of an Air Force General, says he heard the call of God early on. He joined the priesthood, but left the church after disagreeing with its support of the Vietnam War -- a position that also brought him into conflict with his father. Since then, Carroll has been a writer and journalist who has focused on the way that organized religion often supports -- or initiates -- killing in the name of a waging a holy war. The film is based on a book by Carroll, who is still a practicing Christian.
There are two main threads to the documentary. It begins with the Roman Emperor Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor. Constantine, says Carroll, used Christianity as a political force, and used the pretext of Christian conversion to wage war. It was also in Constantine's time, says Carroll, that the Jews became widely blamed for killing Jesus Christ. Carroll tackles the reverberations of this idea through history, and shows how it's been used as an excuse for violent anti-Semitism.
The second thread relates to Carroll's investigation of Christian proselytizing, instigated by the now disgraced Ted Haggard of the New Life Church, in the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The case involved officers telling their cadets to try to convert others on campus to Christianity. Carroll uses this example to demonstrate the dangers of allowing religion to infiltrate the structures of secular state-run organizations.
