The 2024 BAFTA TV Awards very much celebrated the best of British TV tonight as the majority of big-name stars and more recognizable shows fell away to British shows and stars. The likes of “Succession” and “The Last of Us” went home empty-handed at the Royal Festival Hall. “Top Boy,” “The Sixth Commandment,” and “Such Brave Girls” claimed the three big prizes at the ceremony hosted by comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett.
“Top Boy,” Netflix’s hit show about two London drug dealers dealing with gang violence in East London, won Best Drama Series over “The Gold,” “Happy Valley,” and Emmy hopeful “Slow Horses.” Producers Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind came backstage to discuss their victory, which came for the fifth and final season of the fan favorite.

The service featured a series of personal tributes, including a bronze statue of his beloved late dog Buster that had been placed on a leopard-print throw.
A photograph of a smiling O’Grady was placed at the front of the Grade I listed parish church surrounded by arrangements of lilies.

At 89, the beloved British actor is still striving. In fact, she’s just published a new memoir, Old Rage, in which she lays bare her anger and anxiety over work, life and love…
When Sheila Hancock first sat down to begin writing her new memoir in 2016, the volume in question was intended to be an inspiriting book on the subject of old age. Its pages would, she hoped, describe fulfilment and contentment as well as how best to keep your aching back straight (believe me when I tell you that her spine would induce awe in even the sternest pilates teacher). “People are always stopping me in the street,” she says. “‘You’re a legend!’ they tell me. ‘It’s wonderful, the way you keep going!’ I thought: maybe I can write something helpful about how life can be quite lovely even at my age [she is now 89]. But then… life turned awful.

Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour series 1-8.
Love them as we do, a great episode of Endeavour isn’t only down to the central pillars of Morse, Thursday, DeBryn, Bright and Strange. It also takes memorable turns from the host of actors playing one-time characters who leave their own indelible mark on the detective drama. After ruthlessly whittling down the possible choices to a mere handful (there are so many to choose from that the true villains deserve a list all to themselves), here are some of Endeavour’s most memorable guest stars. Tell us who tops your list below.

This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
Grrrngh, click, vroom. Hear that? The sound of a series revving out of the muddy furrow in which it’s languished for two episodes, and getting back on track. Episode three gave us much less Matthew in the tower, and much more Diana spontaneously sprouting tree branches from her fingertips and playing interdimensional cat’s cradle with the gleaming strings of life. Witch stuff, not spy stuff! And all the better for it.
Episode three was also all the better for a shift in Matthew’s behaviour. There was just the one growl, and an entirely pardonable one seeing as it was directed at Kit Marlowe, a character whose self pity would have anybody baring their teeth. We saw the return of Matthew the diplomat, a man acting like he’d learnt a few things from his centuries of experience instead of...

This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
Tell me, how was dinner? Before diving back to the gloomy past, A Discovery of Witches took a gulp of fresh air in the modern day and dropped in on Sept-Tours. With Sarah and Em there under Ysabeau’s protection, the table was being laid for what promised to be a primo scene between the mortal-enemies-turned-housemates. And then… pouf, nothing. It was straight back to the 16th century for another round of bad Matthew. Fingers crossed that the characters we invested in from season one are better served in future episodes.
Satu’s quest to learn about her powers and destiny, for instance, is worth more to fans of season one than political Elizabethan intrigue. Right now though, Satu’s story is only being used as a parallel to Diana’s own search – the dark witch and the light, both seeking answers about their destiny.

It’s almost time to step back into the magical world of A Discovery of Witches, with the second series beginning this weekend – and to mark this occasion we spoke to the leading star Teresa Palmer, who will be reprising the role of Diana Bishop in this enchanting production.
Palmer talks about the thrill of playing Diana again, and how strong a female lead she is. She talks about what fans can expect of the second series, while also giving us a brief flavour of the third season (we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves), which she was filming at the time our interview took place. She also talks about the joy in working alongside co-star Matthew Goode, while giving a nod to the brilliant icons of British arts that are Lindsay Duncan and Sheila Hancock, who also feature in the show. Season 2 will follow Diana as she seeks out “England’s most powerful witch” to aid her journey, while she and Matthew continue their search for the Book of Life.
Tom Hughes joins the cast of season 2 and will play Kit Marlowe, a poet and playwright. Steven Cree, Sheila Hancock and James Purefoy also join.
Purefoy will play Matthew’s stepfather Philippe De Clermont, who is the founder of the Congregation, while Cree portrays vampire Gallowglass De Clermont. Hancock will...

This A Discovery of Witches article contains spoilers for the ending of Season 1.
A Discovery of Witches, like Outlander, is one of the few big-budget genre TV shows that is also unabashedly romance. Based on the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness, the screen adaptation follows Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a historian and witch who, after discovering a bewitched manuscript in Oxford’s Bodelian Library, is pulled further into a world of magic and danger she has been trying to avoid since she was young. In the process, she meets and falls in love with geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), and the two become caught in the middle of the long-running tensions between witches and vampires.

"It was like you were singing... just to me." Mental illness, Morrissey and guinea pigs. Vega Baby US has released a new trailer for the indie dark comedy coming-of-age film The More You Ignore Me, a spunky 80s flick from England that already opened there a few years ago. Adapted from Jo Brand's novel and set to the songs of The Smiths, The More You Ignore Me is a darkly funny coming-of-age story of dysfunctional family life in the 1980s. The film focuses on Gina, a young mother, whose efforts to be a loving mother & wife are undermined by her declining mental health. Things deteriorate once she develops an obsession with the local weatherman, which leads to an admission to the nearby psychiatric hospital. Starring Sheridan Smith as Gina and Ella Hunt (from Anna and the Apocalypse), with Mark Addy, Sally Phillips, Sheila Hancock, and Jo Brand. This looks enjoyable,...

The coronavirus pandemic has not deterred Los Angeles-based actor-filmmakers Darwin Shaw and Will Hawkes.
The duo has launched “The Antiviral Film Project” in recent weeks as a collage of 19 shorts made by 19 film crews from 19 global communities for 19 charities, leading to three films that will be produced in traditional fashion once self-isolation ends.
“The Antiviral Film Project aims to create a new kind of international motion picture anthology about the global Covid-19 experience,” said Shaw. “It will be a journey told in three chapters — Isolation, Connection and Emergence. We will be documenting the process of virtual development in real-time, producing episodic behind-the-scenes content, taking you on the journey with us and ultimately leading to a three picture cinematic experience.”
“It is a participatory event, and our vision extends far beyond the pandemic,” said Hawkes. “We want to harness the energy of this shared focus to create stories that provide catharsis...

A bitter, proud Scottish widow decides to tick an important item off her bucket list before moving into a retirement home in “Edie,” an uneven dramedy from U.K. commercials helmer Simon Hunter, working from a screenplay by Elizabeth O’Halloran that has a big problem in tone and beaucoup clichéd contrivance. While there’s drama aplenty in the notion that octogenarian Edie Moore (the superb Sheila Hancock) yearns to climb Mount Suilven, in the Highlands, the filmmakers too often undermine the dignity of their appealing protagonist with crude slapstick. Hancock makes a determined heroine who deserves better than the knockabout and patronizing treatment her character suffers. The only thing that does not disappoint is the ravishing and varied landscape, even if it is shot a bit like a tourist board advertisement.

"I've wasted so much time doing nothing..." Music Box Films has debuted the official trailer for an indie adventure drama titled Edie, from director Simon Hunter. The film originally premiered at the Edinburgh and Raindance Film Festivals in the UK in 2017, and is finally getting a theatrical release in the Us coming up next month. The film stars Sheila Hancock (from Take a Girl Like You and Carry On Cleo) as Edie, an 83-year-old woman who "believes that it is never too late". So she packs up an old camping bag, leaving her life behind, embarking upon an adventure she never got to have - climbing the imposing Mount Suilven in Scotland (here on Google Maps). The cast also includes Kevin Guthrie, Paul Brannigan, Amy Manson, Wendy Morgan, Rachael Keiller, and Donald Pelmear. This looks exactly like the uplifting, inspiring "you can do anything you want" story that it sounds like,...

It’s a Brit sex comedy that addresses the basic facts about boy-girl petting — and not much else. A noted ‘adult’ role for Hayley Mills, it pairs her with an unlikable Oliver Reed, trying his damnedest to affect natural charm. Was Reed the reason Hayley chose as her next picture a story about a lady studying penguins?

A mountaineering drama in which Sheila Hancock strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young man lacks chemistry
Related: Sheila Hancock on Edie: 'There aren't many actors still around who can leap up and down'
With its drab, overpowering score, this tedious drama is nearly as gruelling as the trek up Scotland’s Suilven, which Edie’s (Sheila Hancock) controlling late husband forbade her to take in the early years of their marriage. Freed from her role as full-time carer, and without her disapproving daughter’s knowledge, the athletic 83-year-old hops aboard a train from London to Inverness and hitches a ride west of Sutherland in the hope of completing the climb.

Existential themes tend to graft onto characters of a certain age and gender. They’re usually a man in his uncomfortable forties, still some time away from growing wrinkles and walking on canes. But in 2018, we’ve been granted some cinematic access into the life-crises of women over 40 – the Britcom Finding Your Feet came out earlier this year, as well as the French comedy-drama I Got Life! And now Edie, the third film from British director Simon Hunter, is the latest addition to this emerging archetype – and it’s the best of the lot.
Edith Moore (Sheila Hancock) is a devoted housewife, taking care of her wheelchair-bound husband of 30 years. When he dies, Edie feels finally unshackled from her loveless and often abusive marriage, and sets out on her own adventure. Many years prior, her husband denied Edie permission to climb up Mount Suilven in Scotland with her now-deceased father.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This is no twee old-lady adventure. The magnificent Sheila Hancock crafts a portrait of elder womanhood as a tangy triumph of risk-taking over regret, and resolution over resignation. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film
(learn more about this)
Stories about women taking enormous life-and-limb risks are not ones we tell often. Instead we tell stories about women fulfilling their responsibilities: to children and to husbands, mostly. Well, “I did my duty,” growls 85-year-old Londoner Edie (Sheila Hancock: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas), who spent years caring for her difficult disabled husband, who was an asshole even before his stroke. But after he dies, she’s nowhere near ready for the depressing care home her daughter (Wendy Morgan) wants to put her in.

For her latest film, the 85-year-old actor had to scale one of Scotland’s most spectacular mountains. But, as her career attests, she’s not afraid of a challenge
Two years ago, when Sheila Hancock was 83, she climbed a mountain. In her new film, Edie, she plays a woman who, when her husband dies, decides to fulfil a lifelong ambition of scaling Suilven, an imposing, 731m peak in the Scottish Highlands. With digital trickery being what it is, it would have been believable to hear that she had done it from the comfort of a studio. “Well, darling, that’s what I thought when they asked me,” she says, mock-aghast. “They said: ‘There’s this mountain, and she climbs this mountain.’ And I said: ‘Yeah, that will be blue screens.’ There was this terrible silence.”

Hancock lifts this drama about an older woman’s last-gasp adventure hiking in Scotland, but it’s familiar terrain
The always engaging Sheila Hancock gives a nice performance here, but I felt that this well-meaning film basically retreads the old ideas about the old person who in death’s encroaching shadow has one last glorious life-affirming adventure – in the odd-couple company of a much younger person who after being grumpy/baffled naturally grows to love the oldster and learns a lot from them about living life to the full.
Edie (Hancock) is someone who has sacrificed a vast amount of her life to being a dutiful child and then a dutiful carer/wife. In her grim widowhood, she finds that her alienated and embittered daughter has plans to put her in a care home. So, emboldened by memories from a recently discovered postcard of Mount Suilven in the Scottish Highlands,...

Director Simon Hunter on making Edie and the extraordinary stamina of Sheila Hancock
Edie tells the story of an elderly lady played by Sheila Hancock who after a bitter and miserable life decides to release herself from a unfulfilled life by heading off to Scotland to climb a mountain and rekindle some of the magic of her youth.
The last film I directed was a science fiction movie called Mutant Chronicles which was a pretty brutal affair. All indoors with 2000 visual effects shots, it took over two and a half years to complete.

My friend Jenny Wilkes, who has died aged 76, won an Oscar for directing the best foreign student film in 1984 with her drama, Mother’s Wedding. Four years later, she was nominated for a second Academy award, this time for Making Waves, a short film with Sheila Hancock. In 1997, her drama documentary Beyond Fear was shown on the opening night of Channel 5.
Jenny grew up in Manchester, where her parents, Arnold Wilkes and his wife, Edith (nee Robinson), ran a chip shop. She left Sale grammar school at 16 and worked as a typist for a couple of years, after which she studied for A-levels on her own initiative and read sociology at the London School of Economics. In early 1965, while still a student, she interviewed Malcolm X, founder of the Nation of Islam, then visiting Britain. A few days after returning to the Us he was assassinated and Jenny’s piece rose to prominence.
