Warning: contains major finale spoilers for ITV’s Red Eye.
By the end of ITV’s Red Eye, Richard Armitage’s character Dr Matthew Nolan had been awake for (approximate calculation) a gazillion hours. Even if he hadn’t been shot saving Hana (Jing Lusi) from that bullet, he’d still have ended the series in a hospital bed due to exhaustion-related organ failure and having blood sugar lower than the Mariana Trench.
Dr Nolan will pull through though, and when he does, he may require a lucid breakdown of what the hell just happened. From car crashes to stapler-surgery to a rogue CIA plot to end the Anglo-China nuclear partnership, all the way to that heroic bullet jump, here’s how everything landed after Red Eye’s surprisingly tight finale.

George Clooney discussed his pivot from in front of the camera to behind it during the promotional rounds for his latest directorial venture “The Boys in the Boat.”
The film is centered on the University of Washington’s rowing team, from their Depression-era beginnings to winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in Hitler’s Nazi Germany. It stars Callum Turner, Joel Edgerton and Peter Guinness, among others.
“It’s more fun, you have a lot more control. I get to boss them around and I don’t have to learn how to row,” Clooney said in an interview with Sky News. “Directing is a fun thing to do. It’s fun to come in in the morning and it’s fun to write a screenplay and then have somebody build a set that you wrote, it really is.”
“As you get older, you need to have other things to do.

Plot: The story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. This inspirational true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.
Review: As a director, George Clooney has delivered many themes, tones, and genres. With The Boys in the Boat, the actor-turned-filmmaker aims for the same inspirational sports tales that have long been Oscar fodder. From Seabiscuit to Unbroken to Rocky, underdog tales have always been rousing cinematic experiences that unify audiences in rooting for the plucky athletes that no one ever thought about. The Boys in the Boat hits all of the requisite notes and formulaic moments that have turned countless movies into box office hits, but this tale never quite moves the needle from a smattering of...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “The Boys in the Boat,” the latest historical drama directed by George Clooney, about the rowing crew team that competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In theaters since December 25th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Joel Edgerton is Coach Al Ulbrickson, who mentors rowing crews for the University of Washington during the 1930s Depression. He leads a rag-tag bunch of underdog rowers, including Joe Rants (Callum Turner), through techniques and timing that makes them one of the best collegiate rowing teams in the country. When the opportunity to qualify for the 1936 Olympics come about, this unexpected and one-of-a-kind team get the opportunity to go for the gold, at an Olympics that is hosted by Herr Adolf Hitler. Can good old American sportsman save the day?
“The Boys in the Boat” is in theaters since December 25th. Featuring Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Peter Guiness, Hadley Robinson and Thomas Elms.

As promised the onslaught of 2023 sports films marches, or in this case paddles, on. Hot on the heels of last week’s historical sports drama, comes this one based on a popular book from a few years ago. It’s not about wrestling, like Friday’s flick, but it is set in the past, though nearly fifty years before the Von Erichs. But there is an Olympic connection. This one concerns a larger team of young men defying the odds and overcoming hardship to go for the gold, rather than fame and fortune.

For a while it seemed like George Clooney was his generation’s heir apparent to Cary Grant, a bona fide movie star whose limited range is rendered irrelevant by his irrepressible charisma. And then he started directing films and, at least out of the gate things seemed momentarily more interesting. His 2002 directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, came on breezy but grounded, certainly the most approachable take on a Charlie Kaufman screenplay ever mounted. And 2005’s Good Night, and Good Luck, his tribute to the mandarin days of television news, was at least palpably committed to lionizing Eisenhower-era liberal resistance. In other words, he looked to become the heir apparent to Robert Redford, auteur.
It didn’t last. The title of Clooney’s The Monuments Men, just about sums it up. His obsession with what he perceives as the achievements and moral clarity of those (read: Americans) who lived...

In the latest directorial effort from George Clooney, the filmmaker takes on an inspiring true story. The Boys in the Boat, based on the popular novel by Daniel James Brown, tells the tale of a 1930’s rowing team who find themselves on the way to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The new feature boasts terrific performances from Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Peter Guinness, Jack Mulhern, and more. If you are looking for a little goodness and inspiration this movie going season, you may want to set sail with The Boys in the Boat.
Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with the film’s stars, Joel Edgerton and Callum Turner. Having the interview take place in-person was a nice treat as well. We started off on a great note as Turner had a little fun with my “slate.” Then the conversation began. The two opened up about taking on this particular story,...

The director lays on the strident messaging in this clunky film, all about the gutsy underdogs of the US rowing team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
George Clooney has been a charming and dapper Anglophile presence on the awards circuit this season while promoting the new movie he’s directed, some of which was shot not far from where he lives near Henley-on-Thames. So it’s sad to report that his film clunks harder than redwood. It is a stodgy and sententious varsity-sports underdog drama from the Depression era, a bit like his 1920s American football film Leatherheads, from 2008, but minus the comedy. Weirdly, it is as if this earnest but perfunctorily imagined film is always ordering us to feel nostalgic and sentimental about a time and place of which no one involved can have any real memory or feeling.

The scrappy ragtag team, the gruff but kind coach, the against-the-odds triumph — sports dramas rarely veer far from a basic template. It’s no surprise when the story’s athletes accomplish their unlikely goal; it’s how the director leads us there that matters. In the case of The Boys in the Boat, a telling of true events that can feel overly cautious in its admiring distance, the surprises lie in small moments and grace notes.
At the helm for his ninth feature, George Clooney follows the intimate coming-of-age tale The Tender Bar with a return to the realm of history. He puts a subdued spin on the story of unlikely Olympians — and generally avoids the stodginess of The Monuments Men. The University of Washington Huskies were working-class college kids in the depths of the Great Depression who became contenders in the rarefied realm of competitive rowing, going all the...

Hollywood is full of inspiring sports-themed movies, especially those focused on underdogs who rise to the occasion. But films about rowing teams are few and far between — until now. Director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat is a gorgeous adaptation of the Depression-era story of a group of poor but scrappy young men who find a slice of glory when they become the USA’s choice to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It is, to use a well worn cliché, a stand-up-and-cheer tale if ever there was one.
But the primary reason to cheer is the kind of unspoken underlying message within, that this is a sport where it is imperative that everyone in the boat rows as one, in unison and together physically and psychologically. This makes The Boys in the Boat not just enormously entertaining, but also important and relevant to our current world that is more divided,...

George Clooney says the Ocean’s gang could get back together after reading a “great script” for another film in the starry heist series. Speaking with Uproxx about his upcoming movie The Boys in the Boat, Clooney revealed a new Ocean’s film could find the crew from the trilogy reuniting for events set after Ocean’s 13. Ocean’s 14, anyone?
“We have a really good script for another ‘Ocean’s’ now, so we may end up doing another one. It’s actually a great script,” Clooney told Uproxx.
The outlet tried pressing Clooney for more information, though he was reluctant to share too much. When asked if the project intends to become Ocean’s 14, Clooney said, “Well… I don’t want to call it that… I mean, the idea is kind of like ‘Going in Style.'”

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Callum Turner goes on an epic quest for Olympic gold in the trailer for director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat, which Amazon MGM Studios dropped on Wednesday ahead of a Dec. 25 theatrical release.
Turner plays Joe Rantz, a Depression-era outsider who discovers joining the rowing team in college will assure him of job and housing. “We rowed out of need. The need to stay in school, the need to eat, to sleep,” an older Rantz says in a voice-over that recounts the underdog rowing team beating powerhouses like Harvard and Yale on their way to triumphing over host Nazi Germany at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

An inspirational true story turned into a bestselling novel is about to make its way to the big screen. That tends to be the natural playbook for these sorts of dramas, but this one in particular comes loaded with an extra amount of star power.
Based on author Daniel James Brown's book of the same name, "The Boys in the Boat" tells the well-documented events surrounding the 1936 Summer Olympics and the feats accomplished by the US men's rowing team from the University of Washington. As with other incredibly underdog stories, the stories of the individuals involved -- all of whom were working class athletes struggling to come out the other side of the Great Depression, almost rivals the magnitude of their achievements.
A few significant differences with "The Boys in the Boat," however, comes from its A-list director George Clooney and the historical backdrop of Nazi Germany hosting the...

This article contains spoilers for Jack Ryan season 3.
Through two seasons, Prime Video’s Jack Ryan has covered some well-trodden topics for CIA spy thrillers. Jack Ryan season 1 found Tom Clancy’s titular CIA analyst on the case of an Islamic extremist’s curious bank statements. Season 2 moved the action to South America, where Jack tried to ensure the democratic legitimacy of a Venezuelan election (a welcome change of pace for the CIA).
While both of those seasons were reasonable successes for the series, Jack Ryan was still missing a prevalent element from Tom Clancy’s writings and spy thrillers in general. That’s right: the Russians, baby. America’s favorite Cold War era big bad finally makes its return in Jack Ryan season 3, albeit in a little more measured, less jingoistic way.
The bad guy in Jack Ryan season 3 isn’t so much Russia, but Russians – more specifically, a...

Between his stints in charge of A Quiet Place, John Krasinski has been going to a Loud Place – one packed with gunshots, running, and yelling. That tends to be the milieu of Jack Ryan, the Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of Tom Clancy’s acclaimed books in which he plays the title role, getting the formerly-bookish CIA analyst out into the field when deadly threats arise. Now, Krasinski is back as Ryan for Season 3 – and he’s in trouble, because now the gun-toting agents are running at him. Check out the trailer:
It’s no wonder Prime Video’s take on Jack Ryan has been such a hit – taking the well-known property and giving it room to breathe in multi-episode form, with a sizable budget to boot. And it helps having someone as charismatic as Krasinski in the lead role. Joining him in Season 3 are the likes of James Cosmo,...

Also cast as series regulars in Season 3 are James Cosmo (His Dark Materials), Peter Guinness (Cursed), Nina Hoss (Little Sister) and Alexej Manvelov (Before We Die) in the series, a co-production of Amazon Studios, Paramount Television Studios and Skydance Television.

Director Zack Snyder and HBO Max revealed the full trailer for “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” on Sunday, giving audiences the first expanded look at his four-hour version of the DC Films superhero movie.
The trailer features a battle of epic proportions between the Justice League and big bad Darkseid (Ray Porter), who was intended to be the main villain of the first cut of the film, but ultimately was not included. The clip also teases a conversation between Jared Leto’s the Joker and Ben Affleck’s Batman. “We live in a society where honor is a distant memory,” The Joker says while staring at a foggy skyline. “Isn’t that right, Batman?”
The film sees Batman, Superman, (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) teaming up to protect the world from catastrophe as Darkseid, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) and DeSaad...

There’s a lot of talk going into the Justice League Snyder Cut about Darkseid’s role in the movie, but it’s worth a reminder that Steppenwolf will still be the film’s main villain. That might illicit groans from some, due to how boring he was in the theatrical cut, but the good thing is this is Zack Snyder’s version of the antagonist. We’re not entirely sure how his characterization will differ from what we’ve seen before, but he’ll definitely look a whole lot better. And scarier.
Today, Snyder revealed our first look at Steppenwolf in his cut of the flick. The filmmaker took to Vero to share a low-res pic of the villain from behind. While we can’t see his face in this image, we can already make out how much more detailed and monstrous this depiction of the general from Apokolips is.

DC FanDome is set to deliver a lot of DC goodness later this month, and one thing we know to expect is a trailer for the Justice League Snyder Cut. It’ll be interesting to see what the trailer features and what it doesn’t, though. Obviously, we know the plot, seeing as we’ve seen this movie in a different form already, so it’ll likely tease the new additions to the film that fans desperately want to see. A brief glimpse at Darkseid, for one, will blow everyone’s mind.
We’re not sure if the ruler of Apokolips himself will make an appearance in the promo, but one of his disciples apparently will. Beyond the Trailer’s Grace Randolph says she got to watch an unfinished version of the sneak peek and, when asked by a fan if she’ll be reacting to the trailer when it’s released,...

If movies were simply judged by their educational and historical merits, “Official Secrets” would be a slam dunk. Based on real events, the drama about a British translator who leaked a top secret Nsa memo during the 2003 lead-up to the Iraq war fancies itself the next “Spotlight” or “The Post,” but its workmanlike translation is more fitting for social studies classrooms than awards conversations. Keira Knightley delivers a routine performance in a central role that is more expository than explosive, and the dramatic action builds around her character more like it would a glorified coat rack than a compelling heroine.
Based on the true story of British Intelligence whistleblower Katharine Gun (Knightley), “Official Secrets” begins with Katharine facing trial for treason in 2004 before cutting back to one year prior. While working as a Mandarin translator at Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (G.C.H.Q.), Katharine is shocked to receive...

Each Christmas and Easter season, History and other cablenets air a number of documentaries on various aspects of the Bible, usually featuring talking-head experts and iffy-looking dramatic re-creations.
Often these productions take a skeptical look at the historicity or accuracy or veracity of biblical accounts, as if the last thing in the world a documentary would want to be seen doing is taking anything in the Bible at face value.
But skepticism was the last thing on the minds of reality TV mogul Mark Burnett ("The Apprentice," "Survivor") and his wife, actress Roma Downey ("Touched by an Angel"), when they set out as executive producers of "The Bible," airing Sundays from March 3 to March 31, which is Easter Sunday this year.
Joined by their faith and a love for the sacred writings of Judaism and Christianity, they have spearheaded a 10-hour, five-part dramatic series that spans the Old and New Testaments,...

History has announced that its five-part docudrama series The Bible will premiere on March 3 at 8 Pm. The 10-hour special, executive produced by Mark Burnett and his wife Roma Downey (who plays Mary), combines live action and CGI to tell the best-known stories of the word’s most popular book. Keith David narrates the series, which Burnett has been working on for two years and which was greenlighted in May 2011. Also in the cast is Portugal’s Diogo Morgado as Jesus and UK-based actors including Sean Teale (Skins), David Rintoul (My Week with Marilyn), Amber Rose Revah (The Borgias), Peter Guinness, Greg Hicks and Simon Kunz (Matchpoint). “History has a legacy of delving into important subjects to which all people are connected,” said Nancy Dubuc, President, Entertainment and Media for A+E Networks. “There’s no question the Bible is one of the world’s most significant and most popular books,...

The truth won’t be Hidden for much longer. I am eager to see the final installment of this thrilling drama but I am also mindful that whatever replaces it on BBC1 is unlikely to be as good. At this point I think it is safe to say that Hidden is going to keep us on the egde of our seats right up until the credits roll at the end of next week’s episode.
The biggest mystery of all (the one involving the Raf war hero, the bottle of Scotch, the media mogul and the politicians) has yet to be solved but we did learn a few new things tonight. Firstly, we discovered that Nigel is not Gina’s real Dad which makes sense when you consider the...

Another week, more edge-of-the-seat drama and another cliffhanger ending. Earlier this summer ITV’s Injustice took viewers on a similar kind of thrill ride before fans were left disappointed by a farcical finale. Hopefully, Ronan Bennett and the team behind Hidden will not make the same mistake because if the remaining two episodes of Hidden are as good as the first two then this will be the drama of the year.
In episode two Stevie Quirk was killed while waiting to be released to the visitor’s area of Belmarsh prison. His murder left Harry Venn feeling a little bit nervous to say the least and that is without Harry even having any idea just who is behind this whole mess. Meanwhile we got to hear David Suchet speaking in...

This week, PBS Masterpiece said goodbye to pre-World War II Britain and all that Agatha Christie has to offer, and instead transported us to modern day Italy. Any show set in Rome is bound to attract a certain number of viewers just because it is set in Rome and it is hard to be subjective as a reviewer, and critique the drama in the same way that you would if the show was set in Solihull or Lake Charles, Louisiana. I like Rome so even if Zen was awful I would probably have still watched it but in fact it was actually pretty good.

There are so many regional detectives cluttering up British television that executives have started to look abroad for inspiration. But why bother importing a foreign series and subtitling it (as BBC4 did with French crime drama Spiral) when you can simply film British actors overseas, pretending to be foreigners. First out of the gate was an English-language remake of Wallander, where Kenneth Branagh played a dour Swedish detective in a country suddenly populated by “Brits”, and now it’s the turn of late author Michael Dibden‘s Italian detective Aurelio Zen, played by the smouldering Rufus Sewell. The benefit is we get detective shows crammed with exotic scenery, with a cultural backdrop that’s unfamiliar and thus fascinating to explore. On the downside, it might take some people awhile to adjust to seeing Italians played by people who sound like they’re from the home counties, but I found myself...
