Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s new body horror satire, The Substance, screened at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend, and the reactions have been (mostly) very positive - although it sounds like the movie has its share of shocking moments.
The film focuses on an acclaimed actress turned celebrity host of a daytime exercise program (Demi Moore) who gets replaced by a younger star (Margaret Qualley), sparking a confrontation between the two women that ultimately turns violent.
The Substance reportedly features some pretty extreme gore, but the scene that's sparked the most discussion is a brutal fight between Moore and Qualley's characters - complete with graphic, full-frontal nudity.
“I had someone who was a great partner,” said Moore of her co-star. “We were obviously quite close at some moments… and naked. But there was also a levity [in shooting those scenes].”
Moore also noted that the film “pushed me out of the comfort zone,...

Moore plays a fading Hollywood star whose career is set to be axed by misogynists when she’s offered a secret new medical procedure
Coralie Fargeat, known for the violent thriller Revenge from 2017, now cranks up the amplifier for some death metal … or nasty injury metal anyway. This is a cheerfully silly and outrageously indulgent piece of gonzo body-horror comedy, lacking in subtlety, body-positivity or positivity of any sort. Roger Corman would have loved it. It’s flawed and overlong but there’s a genius bit of casting in Demi Moore who is a very good sport about the whole thing. And as confrontational satire it strikes me as at least as good, or better, than two actual Palme d’Or winners: Julia Ducournau’s Titane and Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness.

Certainly the grossest, most way-out-there, and dare-you-to-lose-your-dinner film to debut in the Cannes competition so far, Coralie Fargeat’s “Revenge” follow-up “The Substance” premiered in the Palais Sunday night after a morning press screening that saw plenty of expected walkouts. Surely the same volume of repulsed exiters carried over to the premiere public screening, where Greta Gerwig’s jury got their first glimpse of the otherwise since-secretive film whose synopses and press notes tell you little. Mubi has distribution rights, which the company purchased just before the festival started. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich calls it an “instant classic.”

There’s a story Alfred Hitchcock always liked to tell about how, when he was five years old, his father dropped him off at the local police station near his home in East London. William Hitchcock left a note for the coppers explaining that his son had been misbehaving. A policeman locked young Alfred in a cell for a few minutes and explained, “This is what we do to naughty boys.”
When Hitchcock recounted that story to Dick Cavett he was in his 70s, but the incident continued to leave a profound mark on the director. He said he was still “terrified of the police” because of that and drew a connection from that to the feelings of guilt and wrong-men-on-the-run paranoia that seeps into so many of his films.
The funny thing is, though, father characters are almost entirely absent from Hitchcock’s work. There are a few: Cedric Hardwicke...

Exclusive: Succession’s Sarah Snook, now the toast of the town for her dazzling one-woman performance playing 26 characters in a breathtakingly innovative staging of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, will likely head to Broadway early in 2025 once she’s had a break, and if she wants to do it.
There are tentative, in no way definite, plans for the production to be filmed for the National Theatre’s Nt Live.
Look, movies and television are great art forms, and I love ‘em to bits like everybody else, but nothing beats watching an artist at the top of their craft live on a theatre stage. And in Snook’s case in The Picture of Dorian Gray, she’s able to command every inch of the Theatre Royal Haymarket stage.

If Sarah Snook felt at all concerned about how to follow her career-defining, award-winning turn as Shiv Roy on Succession, a fear of ever reaching such heights again, of even coming close to filling that professional hole, then she must now feel rather blessed — if also, every night, unbelievably exhausted.
Snook returns to the London stage for the first time since 2016, when, pre-Shiv, the relatively unknown Australian actress shone opposite Ralph Fiennes in The Master Builder. Now, she carries the massive weight of Kip Williams’ bravura adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s only novel. Snook plays not just the eternally young but damnably debauched Dorian Gray, but every one of the 26 parts in two unbroken hours of ceaselessly kinetic, highly choreographed, tech-heavy action. And she’s phenomenal.

Sarah Snook has revealed that Brian Cox was capable of channeling Logan Roy, even when he was not in character as the menacing media baron in HBO’s Succession.
The Australian actress, who clinched an Emmy for her portrayal of Logan’s daughter Shiv in the final season of Succession, said Cox would test the energy on set with “thunderous” outbursts.

“I think part of it’s a little of trying to just jolt the energy of the set and rustle a few feathers, get it going and moving faster. The quality of his voice can be very terrifying sometimes, for sure. Thunderous.”

Lovecraft in Re-Animator. Now, we’re traveling back in time to discuss Albert Lewin‘s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders), tells his friend Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield) that men should pursue their sensual longings, but laments that only the young get to do so. Taken with the idea, Dorian inadvertently makes a Faustian bargain to stay young forever. His wish comes true, and his boyish looks aid him as he indulges his every whim. Unfortunately, his sins take physical form on a portrait of himself, and as the years go by he must decide what type of man he wants to be.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has an incredible cast of characters that fill out the world around the central group, "the gang," and few are as funny or tragic as Matthew "Rickety Cricket" Mara, played by the fabulous David Hornsby. Hornsby is also a writer and co-producer, bringing his slightly twisted sense of humor to the series in more ways than one, but it's hard to deny his impact as Cricket. The first time fans met Cricket, he was a handsome young priest who had intense unrequited feelings for Dee (Kaitlin Olson). He went to high school with the gang, which is where he earned the nickname "Rickety Cricket" because of his leg braces, and they only continue to make his life worse as the years go on. After Dee convinced him to leave the church and told him that her love for him was only because he was a priest and unattainable,...

Few movie stars ever reach the global icon status that Sean Connery enjoyed. In his youth he was the face of arguably the first modern film franchise, James Bond. The experience took him around the globe and laid the groundwork for a career where even into his 60s, no less than Steven Spielberg would say Connery remained one of “only seven genuine movie stars in the world today.” His roles are the stuff of legend: Bond, Jimmy Malone, Professor Henry Jones, Major General Urquhart, Robin Hood, and many more.

On an early Saturday evening in Philadelphia, in a pastoral stretch of park known as the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, Questlove is making time stand still. Onstage with him are Ronald Isley, wearing a patent-leather suit and looking ageless enough at 82 to make you think of Dorian Gray; Ernie Isley, playing a guitar solo with his teeth at a comparatively youthful 71; and the rest of the current-day iteration of the Isley Brothers, along with Questlove’s Roots bandmate Captain Kirk Douglas on guitar.

German powerhouse Zdf Studios and U.K.-based Factual Fiction are reteaming for “#DorianGray,” an updated social media spin on Oscar Wilde’s classic, “The Picture of Dorian Gray.”
In Wilde’s original, first published as a novella in 1890 in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine, the self-besotted Dorian Gray sells his soul in exchange for eternal youth, a picture painted of him recording the decay of his soul as in outward appearance he remains physically forever young.
Currently being written by Maiya John, a young London-based screenwriter, the contemporary reimagining is described by Zdf Studios as “a suspenseful ride through the life of a teenager as they construct their identity.”
While navigating sex, and gender, mental health and consent, through tweets and #instagram and Tik Tok videos, Dorian Gray, as in Wilde’s central concept, projects an image of who he’d like to be, rather than who he really is.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
This week’s New to Streaming column is sponsored by Alex Pritz’s The Territory, now streaming on Disney+, courtesy of National Geographic Documentary Films.
The Territory (Alex Pritz)
There are about 180 Uru-eu-wau-wau people left in the Brazilian Amazon. This community lives off the land, protecting the Amazon from deforestation, constant threats of violence, and an expanding base of anti-Indigenous sentiment, streaming from the far-right emboldened by President Jair Bolsonaro. Over three years, filmmaker Alex Pritz spent time with these native Brazilians for The Territory, a collaborative, vérité documentary that’s both engaging and terrifying. Pritz even hands over the camera to the Uru-eu-wau-wau at one point, as the group closes their borders and prepares for an ongoing fight to preserve their land.

10. “Nanny McPhee” (2005)
Angela Lansbury has often projected an air of menace, as she does playing the near-sighted great-aunt of the newly motherless Brown children in Kirk Jones’ family film. The tightwad meanie gets her comeuppance at a wedding featuring green-frosted cake.
9. “Death on the Nile” (1978)
In this successful adaptation of an Agatha Christie classic, Lansbury plays a romance novelist who might have based one of her characters a little too closely on the murder victim at the center of Hercule Poirot’s investigation
8. “Little Gloria … Happy at Last” (1982)
In this NBC miniseries, based on Gloria Vanderbilt’s best-selling memoir, Lansbury plays the teenage heiress’ aunt who conspires to seize custody of the girl (and her fortune) from her mother. Lansbury earned her first Emmy nomination for the role.
7. “National Velvet” (1944)
In only her second film, Lansbury played the older sister of Elizabeth Taylor’s horse-loving English girl who trains a gelding into a champion.

This article contains House of the Dragon episode 7 spoilers.
Laenor Velaryon is alive. This revelation sent shockwaves through the House of the Dragon viewing community, astonishing book readers and the unsullied alike. Before the moment where a newly shorn Laenor (played briefly but poignantly by John Macmillan) removed his hood, viewers were led to believe they were witnessing the darkest moment of cruel betrayals: Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), Princess of Dragonstone and wife of Laenor, appeared to conspire in the murder of her husband. And, indeed, someone was definitely lying dead in a fire, adorned in Laenor’s clothes.
Yet the son of Driftmark lives still, even if in doing so he has now abandoned his titles and ancestral home in favor of a life at sea and presumably in Essos—a land where a man’s gold is more valuable than his name.
It’s a shocking twist, not...

The most devastating horrors are often masked in beauty. In literature, the examples are numerous. Dorian Gray. The folksy country town of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." The Eloi's banal lives of ease in H.G. Wells's The Time Machine.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 6 is even more insidious in painting the charm of Majalis. Not only is their representative a charming, attractive emissary with a romantic history with Pike, but their entire culture also ascribes to the philosophy of "Science. Service. Sacrifice."

In the tradition of Star Trek outings like Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5 Episode 17, "The Outcast," in the end, the crew is forced to leave Majalis to its own culture and traditions.

20th Century Studios is developing a reboot of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for Hulu, Deadline can confirm.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a fantasy pic released by 20th Century Fox in 2003, based on the comic book series of the same name from writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill. Set in an alternate Victorian Age world, it followed a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters—including Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer—as they teamed up on a secret mission.
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman comics were first introduced in 1999. Stephen Norrington directed the original film adaptation, starring Sean Connery, which was reputed to be the reason he retired from acting—so miserable was his experience on set. James Dale Robinson wrote the script, with Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh rounding out the cast.

The summer season is upon us and, per each year, we’ve dug beyond studio offerings (though a few potential highlights remain) to present an in-depth look at what should be on your radar. From festival winners of the past year to selections coming straight from Cannes to genre delights to some high-flying spectacles, there’s more than enough to anticipate.
Check out our picks below and return for monthly updates as more is sure to be added to the calendar.
Happening (Audrey Diwan; May 6)
Diwan’s sophomore feature is an unglamorous, straightforward film that tells a simple story about an ordinary girl. It is also the single most intense, shatteringly empathetic thing I’ve seen all year. Carried by Anamaria Vartolomei’s fiercely committed performance, the ’60s-set drama takes on the subject of unintended pregnancy and illustrates how far from a political / religious issue it can be when it happens to you.

It’s a good time to be a Hong Sangsoo fan. With an NYC retrospective underway, where the South Korean director is appearing in person, and a LA retrospective kicking off next month, they offer the perfect prep for the theatrical release of his next U.S. release, In Front of Your Face. Originally premiering at Cannes last year, the film follows former actress Sangok (Lee Hyeyoung) who is back in Seoul after years abroad, staying with her sister Jeongok (Cho Yunhee) in her high-rise apartment. Ahead of a May 6 release, Cinema Guild has now unveiled the U.S. trailer.
David Katz said in his review, “By evidence, Hong Sangsoo may never make an Oki’s Movie or Hill of Freedom-type work again; our maestro is shooting for bigger emotional game. It’s fascinating to observe how idiosyncratic directors make their way towards the arthouse mainstream. With Hong, arguably, it...

Last Night In Soho Writer Remembers Penny Dreadful: 'We Were Just Too Soon, Weren't We?' [Exclusive]
Once upon a time, in the mid-2010s, there was a little Showtime series called "Penny Dreadful." That series, loosely based on the "penny dreadful" magazines of the Victorian period, was a beautiful gothic nightmare. Viewers were enraptured with the stories of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), adventurer Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), possibly possessed Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), and howling hottie Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett). "Penny Dreadful" was like a truly excellent adaptation of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," mixing public domain gothic characters to delightful conclusions.
The series, created by Jon Logan and Sam Mendes, only ran for three seasons. The...

By evidence, Hong Sangsoo may never make an Oki’s Movie or Hill of Freedom-type work again; our maestro is shooting for bigger emotional game. It’s fascinating to observe how idiosyncratic directors make their way towards the arthouse mainstream. With Hong, arguably, it’s come from two sources: less of a rigid fixation on male vanity, neurosis, and inebriation, coupled with plot summaries you could describe in a brief, eloquent sentence. Oki’s Movie, for instance, approaches a Faulkner-esque writer with its digressive intricacy; The Day He Arrives is like a fractal Groundhog Day. This is well-rehearsed, but there’s something to be said for emotional transparency and an examination of things “as they are,” to paraphrase dialogue from In Front of Your Face’s lead character. Another well-rehearsed question: are we yet again in self-portraiture mode, for someone with a Dorian Gray-like attic full of them?

Lotus Entertainment and Roar have boarded “French Touch,” a music-filled coming-of-age movie set in New York, starring French singer-songwriter David Hallyday and his real-life daughter Emma Smet.
The film will be directed by Shirley Monsarrat, who most recently helmed season 7 of the French teen hit series “Skam.” Jay Froberg at Roar and Jeremie Guiraud at Lotus Entertainment are producing, alongside Otto Eckstein, who also penned the original screenplay.
“French Touch” takes place in 2007 in Brooklyn, and follows Elle Leclerq (Smet) who clashes with her father Matthieu (Hallyday), a Parisian DJ and 70’s disco icon, as she discovers French house music and experiences an epic summer of musical exploration, parties and romance.

So how insane was that?
In many ways, this is the Empire Strikes Back season where Snowpiercer Season 2 Episode 9 literally lands Layton in The Swamp, while Snowpiercer Season 2 Episode 10 capped the season with Han still in carbonite... sorry, Wilford still control of the (majority of) train.
The unfortunate truth is that because the first season finale, Snowpiercer Season 1 Episode 10, was such a phenomenon, arguably the best season finale in recent memory, even the massive combined shock of the pirate train and Melanie's gone-ness in this second season finale suffered in comparison.
Season finales are measured on a different scale than typical episodes. They require satisfying resolutions to the season's conflict while intriguing us with future developments. While we are definitely intrigued, I'm betting no one's feeling particularly satisfied at the moment.
As the curtain fell on Snowpiercer Season 2 Episode 8, Wilford had regained control of Snowpiercer, and no time is wasted...

Analysis: A leaked recording of the movie star yelling at crew on his latest blockbuster is not evidence of tyranny, but the extraordinary strain of keeping the huge undertaking afloat
It is a lonely business, being a Tom Cruise fan in 2020. The heel lifts, the way his arms pump when he runs (nobody runs like Tom Cruise), his Dorian Gray looks: I love Cruise for all of it, and yet I’m aware this is a deeply unfashionable opinion, and one I’m often called on to defend at dinner parties. And so it befalls me, as Cruise’s solitary champion, to step to his aid now, like Ethan Hunt in a tuxedo taking on a posse of earpiece-wearing hitmen, as behind him an orchestra plays Nessun Dorma.

Watching The Picture of Dorian Gray as a horror film in this, its 75th anniversary year, is a bit of a puzzle. It’s almost unrecognizable within the genre, though director Albert Lewin does treat the revelation of the deformed painting itself as something of a jump scare. But the overall vibe is more akin to a period drama or a film noir than anything we would consider spooky today.
That is, until you think about it a little more closely.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is an atmospheric horror film about things that don’t necessarily scare us nearly as much anymore: arrogance, beauty and the simple fact of sexuality. In this way it does actually resemble the great horror films of its time, monster movies that make much out of giant laboratories and cavernous castles, unnerving...

Above: Ticket of No Return. Courtesy of Arsenal.Ulrike Ottinger’s Ticket of No Return (1979) opens on one of the last locations I laid eyes on before the sudden, pandemic-fueled termination of transatlantic travel: Berlin’s Tegel airport, its brutalist baggage claim mostly unchanged between the era of the film’s production and this February’s Berlinale. There, Ottinger was awarded the prestigious Berlinale Camera, recognizing her formative position in New German Cinema, a celebration overdue after years of her work being overlooked while more attention was lavished on her male counterparts. Ticket of No Return follows a sloppy socialite who lands in the city to imbibe till the point of demise, a desire that felt unfortunately familiar through the darkest months of the spring’s lockdown. Now, even as we tentatively re-emerge into an opening world, Ottinger’s filmography—the subject of a retrospective via Metrograph’s online platform...

There you are, ready to watch the new Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War trailer. You’ve got a chicken tender sandwich with extra mayonnaise in one hand and a snifter of Monster Energy drink sitting at the ready on the corner of the Ikea table that you proudly repurposed into a desk. You’re basking in the glory of a new Call of Duty game that’s totally going to recapture those glory days of Modern Warfare 2 gone by. Truly, this is as good as it gets.
Then, without warning, your Cold War trailer viewing experience is shattered by the appearance of this face:
The sudden reveal of the 40th President of the United States sends you into a state of confused panic. You attempt to throw your sandwich across the room in a wild response to the terror, but its empty nutrients have left you weak. Suddenly tired,...

Above: Alternative and official UK posters for Parasite. Designers: Andrew Bannister (left) and La Boca (right). It’s been far too long since I last did one of these round-ups: nine months to be exact. A lot has changed in the world over that time of course, the most pertinent to this column being that far fewer new posters have premiered recently, and that the distractions and stresses of our current situation have led to me posting less frequently than I usually do.But, as I’ve been doing for many years, I have tallied up the most popular posters featured on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram (previously Tumblr) and by a long shot the most popular posts of the past nine months were for the two U.K. Parasite posters above. If it seems I’m giving these astonishing works short shrift by lumping them together here...

The following contains light spoilers for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 1.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels debuted on Showtime to add a fully new chapter to the dark mysteries of short stories for pulpy paper. It is called a spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful series which brought classic literary figures like Dracula and Dorian Gray to life in Victorian London. The first incarnation was set when the Society for Psychical Research looked for truths among the shadows while The Theosophical Society brought lost wisdom to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
The new series opens with its patron, Santa Muerte, played by Lorenza Izzo, as she carries the souls of the newly dead to whatever comes next. She has no tears, she says, but also no judgment. She saved the life, but left her mark on the main protagonist, Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto). Natalie Dormer plays Santa Muerte’s sister Magda.

Billed as "a spiritual descendent" of the original Penny Dreadful series which ran from 2014-2016, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Season 1 Episode 1 introduces a supernatural pantheon of beings in a hauntingly familiar context, pre-wwii America.
This being the series premiere -- and me being a huge fan of the original series -- it's hard not to spend a lot of time comparing the two.
Like its predecessor, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels boasts an impressive cast, lush cinematography, and an ambitious narrative.
However, where the original played on the well-known characters of classic gothic and horror literature -- Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, the Wolf-Man -- this new incarnation is building somethng novel and more complex around the figure of Santa Muerte, the Angel of Holy Death.
Tiago: Santa Muerte is the Angel of Holy Death. She's the one who brings dead people to Heaven.
Lewis: Oh, she's the one who does that.
