Mystery, myth, and legend-investigating YouTube channel The Why Files has gone lots of places in pursuit of the truths that (maybe) lie hidden all around us.
Now it wants to go on your feet.
The Why Files (which has 3.4 million subscribers and brings in nearly 30 million views per month) teamed up with sneakerhead platform SoleSavy and producer Garrixon Studios to create The Hecklekicks, a limited-edition sneaker inspired by its mascot Hecklefish.
The Hecklekicks come in a black, white, and red colorway with Why Files branding and Hecklefish packaging. They’re made of Napa leather, Italian suede, and a Vibram outsole, and go on sale March 9. They’ll only be in stock for 10 days; after that, they’re gone.
“We are excited to bring another amazing product to the fans of The Why Files,” Jen Gentile, CEO of The Why Files, said in a statement. “Our goal is to have quality...

Michael Gordon isn’t one for subtlety. The songs that the New Jersey artist makes as Mk.gee froth and fizz and occasionally freak out, making their unwieldy production not just noticeable, but an integral part of the songwriting. Take “New Low,” the brisk two-minute opener to his exceptional debut album Two Star & The Dream Police: its percussion has the lightness and congeniality of a schoolyard hand-clapping game, but it’s set atop a wobbling synth bass that underlines his contemplative lyrics. He sounds both resentful and filled with pity, pointing...

Proud Boys member Marc Bru was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot – and he declared in court that he would storm the Capitol “all over again.”
Bru was convicted in October 2023 of five misdemeanor counts and two felony counts of civil disorder and obstruction of an official proceeding.
He declined to offer a defense during his trial and did not add anything substantial aside from repeating that he never consented to the proceeding.
“You are outside of your jurisdiction,” Bru stated instead of giving a closing argument. “You have trafficked me and you have committed war crimes against me.”
While facing the consequences of his guilty verdict for two felonies and five misdemeanors, Bru showed little concern while standing before the court, calling D.C. District Chief Judge James Boasberg a “clown” and a “fraud.”

February––particularly its third week––is all about romance. Accordingly the Criterion Channel got creative with their monthly programming and, in a few weeks, will debut Interdimensional Romance, a series of films wherein “passion conquers time and space, age and memory, and even death and the afterlife.” For every title you might’ve guessed there’s a wilder companion: Alan Rudolph’s Made In Heaven, Soderbergh’s remake, and Resnais’ Love Unto Death. Mostly I’m excited to revisit Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, a likely essential viewing before Megalopolis.
February also marks Black History Month, and Criterion’s series will include work by Shirley Clarke (also subject of a standalone series), Garrett Bradley, Cheryl Dunye, and Julie Dash, while movies by Sirk, Minnelli, King Vidor, and Lang play in “Gothic Noir.” Greta Gerwig gets an “Adventures in Moviegoing” and can be seen in Mary Bronstein’s Yeast,...

Rock Hudson was one of the biggest stars of the 1950’s and 60s: the most handsome leading man who romanced the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Day, Jane Wyman, Barbara Rush, Julie Andrews and Gina Lollobrigida on the silver screen. But he was living a secret life off-screen — he was gay.
The new Max/HBO documentary “Rock Hudson All That Heaven Allowed” examines his double life and the lengths that were taken to ensure his LGBTQ+ identity wasn’t revealed It wasn’t until 1985 did the truth make the headlines when he became the first famous Hollywood star to die of AIDs.
Barbara Rush, who appeared in three films with Hudson including 1954’s “Magnificent Obsession,” told me in a 2019 L.A. Times interview that it was no secret in Tinseltown that he was gay. “His agent [Henry Willson] decided that there had been enough about the rumors about Rock being gay.

February, marking both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, is the kind of stretch from which a programmer can mine plenty. Accordingly the Criterion Channel have oriented their next slate around both. The former is mostly noted in a series comprising numerous features and shorts: Shirley Clarke and William Greaves up to Ephraim Asili and Garrett Bradley, among them gems such as Varda’s Black Panthers and Kathleen Collins’ Losing Ground; a six-film series on James Baldwin; and 10 works by Oscar Micheaux.
Meanwhile, the 23-film “All You Need Is Love” will cover the blinding romance of L’Atalante, the heartbreak of Happy Together, and youthful whimsy of Stolen Kisses; four Douglas Sirk rarities should leave their mark, but I’m perhaps most excited about three starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Perhaps more bracing are 12 movies by Derek Jarman and four by noir maestro Robert Siodmak. Also a major...

Powerhouse Indicator’s first foray into the Universal library yields six noir thrillers, all crime-related and all different: the list introduces us to scheming businessmen, venal confidence crooks, black-market racketeers, a femme fatale, a gangster deportee and baby stealers. The B&w features are enriched with some of the best actors of the postwar years, and the titles themselves are a litany of vice and sin: The Web, Larceny, Kiss the Blood Off My Hands, Abandoned, Deported and Naked Alibi.

It’s smooth noir sailing with this polished noir from Universal-International and its choice cast of pros — Edmond O’Brien, Ella Raines and William Bendix, plus Vincent Price doing an excellent turn as a Machiavellian businessman, a ‘frame’ expert with a side specialty in double-dealing. Director Michael Gordon earns an early credit at Universal-International with a nice look: almost all exteriors are richly photographed nighttime scenes. Ella Raines is particularly good — despite the cover illustration, she’s not a femme fatale, just a cautious independent woman.

Management firm Night Media has tapped veteran digital executive Ezra Cooperstein as president.
In his new role, the former Rooster Teeth executive will oversee business operations, including strategy and business development. This is a new position for five-year-old Night Media, which works with more than 20 YouTube creators including stunt guru MrBeast and customizer Zhc.
“After more than 12 years of building companies in the online creator space, I believe that digital talent management will play an important part in the future of the media landscape,” Cooperstein said in a statement. “There is no company doing it better than Night Media.”
Cooperstein was the founding CEO of YouTube multi-channel network Maker Studios. He then teamed up with YouTube veteran George Strompolos to build competitor Fullscreen, later selling the business to Otter Media. The UCLA grad then joined Rooster Teeth as president, a role he exited in spring 2019.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt hit the headlines again this week, with the announcement that he had signed on as a producer of DC Comics' movie adaptation of The Sandman.
While there are unconfirmed rumours that Gordon-Levitt may also star in and direct the film, the news that he is to co-produce the blockbuster with The Dark Knight Rises screenwriter David S Goyer is exciting enough.
In celebration, Digital Spy brings you 10 facts about this multi-tasking marvel.
1. Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt was born in California on February 17, 1981 to Jane Gordon and Dennis Levitt. His mother was a notable activist who ran for United States Congress in the 1970s, representing the Peace and Freedom Party.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Adams on the 85th Academy Awards red carpet Amy Adams, a Best Supporting Actress nominee for Paul Thomas Anderson's well-received psychological drama The Master, is seen arriving at the 85th Academy Awards show. Adams' competitors were the following: Jacki Weaver for David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook, Anne Hathaway for Tom Hooper's Les Misérables, Sally Field for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, and Helen Hunt for Ben Lewin's The Sessions. Hathaway, as expected, turned out to be the winner. (See below photos of Aaron Tveit and Best Director nominee Benh Zeitlin on the Oscar red carpet.) This was Adams' fourth Oscar nod. Her previous ones, all in the Best Supporting Actress category, were the following: Phil Morrison's comedy-drama Junebug (2005); John Patrick Shanley's drama Doubt (2008), with Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman; and David O. The perfection of a rose-tinted past, Doris Day’s costumes in Pillow Talk (1959) are some of the most exquisite ever worn on screen. They personify her immaculate character and symbolise the remnants of a dying era; opulence, optimism and the changing face of urbanised fashion.
Costume designer for Pillow Talk was Bill Thomas, although, as became standard with Doris Day pictures, he was not directly responsible for creating her outfits. That job fell to celebrated costume/fashion designer Jean Louis, earning him a ‘Gowns By’ credit on the film. Louis was known for his stylish and often deceptively simple garments, including most famously Rita Hayworth’s strapless black sheath in Gilda (1946). He even created Marilyn Monroe’s sheer ‘President’s dress’, immortalised at John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday celebration in 1962.

Over the past few months, we’ve added a weekly Friday feature rounding up the new releases coming to the big screen each week, courtesy of our Mr. Rob Keeling, giving you a taste of all the brilliant(/not so brilliant) films entering your local cinemas at the weekend.
It recently occurred to me to start up a similar weekly feature, instead rounding up all* the films making their way to the shelves of your local video stores (and of course, increasingly, supermarkets) at the start of each week.
There are so many brilliant films often released in close proximity to each other that sometimes it’s just not possible to see everything you want to see on the big screen, not to mention the fact that not all films are released in a nearby cinema (particularly if you live outside of London). For the tenth edition of Film Art: An Introduction, David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson are partnering with Criterion to present Connect Film, an hour-long set of twenty videos on various aspects of filmmaking addressed in the now-classic textbook. Above: "Elliptical Editing in Vagabond (1985)." Kristin Thompson: "Most of the other Connect examples illustrate the chapters on the four types of film technique: mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, and sound. There's also a short documentary about digital animation."
More books. You may remember that Dave Kehr is quite an admirer of the writing of Arlene Croce, a dance critic for the New Yorker from 1973 to 1998. Linda Darnell, Ann Sothern, Jeanne Crain, A Letter to Three Wives DGA Awards vs. Academy Awards Pt.2: Foreign, Small, Controversial Movies Have Better Luck at the Oscars Since pre-1970 Directors Guild Award finalists often consisted of more than five directors, it was impossible to get an exact match for the DGA's and the Academy's lists of nominees. In the list below, the years before 1970 include DGA finalists (DGA) who didn't receive an Academy Award nod and, if applicable, those Academy Award-nominated directors (AMPAS) not found in the — usually much lengthier — DGA list. The label "DGA/AMPAS" means the directors in question received nominations for both the DGA Award and the Academy Award. The DGA Awards vs. Academy Awards list below goes from 1948 (the DGA Awards' first year) to 1952. Follow-up posts will cover the ensuing decades. The number in parentheses next to "DGA" indicates that year's number of DGA finalists if other than five.

Doris Day may have been — once again — absurdly bypassed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors, but at least she'll be getting some much deserved recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca). Day, 87, has been named the recipient of the L.A. Critics' Career Achievement Award of 2011 — or 2012, as the ceremony will take place early next year. (This year's winners will be announced on December 11.) The first Lafca award winners were announced in 1975. The annual Career Achievement Award was instituted the following year. Since then, a mere four women have been recognized for their contributions to the motion picture industry: actresses Barbara Stanwyck (1981) and Myrna Loy (1983), editor Dede Allen (1999), and now Doris Day. Male recipients — sometimes two per year — range from auteur John Cassavetes to comedian/auteur Jerry Lewis, from producer John Calley to silent-era pioneer Allan Dwan, from animator Chuck Jones to filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Ann Blyth is Turner Classic Movies Star of the Evening tonight, as part of TCM's "The Essentials" film series. [Ann Blyth Movie Schedule.] Opera- and Broadway-trained Ann Blyth began her film career in the mid-1940s at Universal, appearing in light B musicals opposite Donald O'Connor and/or Peggy Ryan, among them The Merry Monahans, Chip Off the Old Block, and Babes on Swing Street. Blyth's big break came in 1945, when — following back surgery — she played Joan Crawford's pathologically selfish daughter Veda in Michael Curtiz's classic film noir-cum-melodrama Mildred Pierce. A well-deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination followed, and so did leads in darker, bigger-budgeted productions, among them Jules Dassin's Brute Force (1947), with Burt Lancaster; Zoltan Korda's A Woman's Vengeance (1948), opposite Charles Boyer; and Michael Gordon's film version of Lillian Hellman's Another Part of the Forest (1948), a prequel to The Little Foxes. Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing any of Blyth's hard-to-find Universal titles.
