This week on DC’s Stargirl, a series of quieter moments and needed conversations set the table for Season 2’s finale — while also leaving us with a haunting hint of what Eclipso has planned.
As Yvette Monreal recently told TVLine (and as we ourselves predicted a ways back), the Jsa is going to need all hands on deck for the finale, and this Tuesday’s episode went about locking down that super-sized team.

This week’s DC’s Stargirl was absolutely chilling in each and every way, as Eclipso turned his attention to Courtney’s family, prompting Pat to look back on how the Og Jsa first defeated the demon — no matter the steep cost.
Episode 9 opened with a sequence set “decades ago,” in which Bruce Gordon was struggling with his debt to Eclipso, whom he had found on an island inside the black diamond and had since been responsible for the explorer’s great fame. Bruce was ready to break things off with Eclipso, but the demon insisted that he was “owed...

Ride ’em, rope ’em, bite ’em? Is this ‘Dracula Goes West,’ or ‘Fangs of the High Chapparal?’ The fading Universal-International house of horrors squeaks out a bizarre horror item that one sits through just out of curiosity… are these people serious? We respect the professionalism of Michael Pate, Kathleen Crowley and Bruce Gordon as they give their all to a dead horse of a concept. A threadbare production stages us vampiric action so tame that it’s toothless, figuratively and literally. Critical snipers suggest that the whole thing might have been some kind of in-house joke — if so, where are the laughs?

“I know you’re in there, Eclipso.”
With these words burgeoning supervillain Cindy Burman has introduced a whole new world and threat to Stargirl. After killing her father and attempting to defeat Courtney and co. it’s clear that the Dragon King’s daughter is keen on getting revenge, which is lucky as she’s just invoked the name of a deep cut character who could be a way of introducing an entirely new supernatural layer to the series.
Get ready to meet Eclipso.
1963 was a massive year for comics. At the House of Ideas, the X-Men, the Avengers, and Iron Man were bursting from the pages, changing the future of comic books and ultimately Hollywood forever. Meanwhile, their Distinguished Competition saw the Silver Age as a time for reinvention, taking classic characters like Green Lantern and The Flash and turning them into legacy characters.

The star-studded biopic Capone is due to be released via digital platforms on May 12th. Tom Hardy plays Al Capone in his later years in the movie and he looks fantastic. Linda Cardellini, Kyle MacLachlan, and Matt Dillon co-star. Al Capone is America’s best-known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that lent Chicago its reputation as a lawless city and an interesting variety of Hollywood stars have had the leading role as Al Capone in the many films that have been made that featured him as a character.
The first film about Capone was produced when he was still making headlines. The main character may be named Antonio Camonte, but there’s little doubt as to who producer Howard Hughes had in mind when...

CBS has finally scheduled its twice-delayed annual shareholder meeting for the morning of December 11 at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
During the meeting, shareholders will be asked to vote on the company’s directors — the majority of whom have joined the board, or been nominated, since September.
The unusual level of director turnover reflects a year of turmoil at CBS, which saw a high-stakes legal battle that pitted the media company against its controlling shareholder, National Amusements, and the resignation of its long-standing CEO, Les Moonves, amid allegations of sexual harassment.
Shareholders will be asked to cast ballots for 11 board members, including five returning directors: Gary L. Countryman, Linda Griego, Robert N. Klieger, Martha L. Minow and Shari Redstone.
Six independent directors were installed in September, to replace board members who stepped down with the resignation of Moonves.

Richard Parsons has resigned from the CBS Corp board of directors, including his role as interim chairman which he undertook just a month ago following the departure of Les Moonves. Parsons cited health reasons related to his fight with multiple myeloma as the reason for his sudden exit.
The CBS board met this evening and tapped Strauss Zelnick to take over as interim chairman, a decision the board said was unanimous.
“The reason for my departure relates to the state of my health,” Parsons said in the release Sunday night announcing the decision. “As some of you know, when I agreed to join the board and serve as the interim chair, I was already dealing with a serious health challenge – multiple myeloma – but I felt that the situation was manageable. Gil Schwartz, CBS’ longtime head of corporate communications, is retiring from the company, effective Nov. 1.
“As fans of arcane SEC filings have noted, I had the option of stepping away early this past summer, but given the exigencies of corporate life at that juncture, I elected to stay in place for a while,” Schwartz said in a memo to staff, which was obtained by TheWrap. “Now seems like a much more appropriate time to move on. The corporation is establishing a new direction, full of hope and promise. And I still have a lot of writing to do, in an atmosphere of perhaps some greater serenity.”
His retirement comes during a period of massive change for the company, following the forced resignation of CBS CEO Leslie Moonves (whom Schwartz directly reported to), in the wake of multiple sexual misconduct allegations. In his place, at least temporarily, is Joe Ianniello.

Former Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons has been named CBS’ interim chairman, in an appointment that the board approved unanimously, the company said.

Parsons was an advisor to CBS’ controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, as she navigated her bruising battle with Les Moonves over control of the media company. The former CEO has since resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct from a dozen women.

Two months shy of his 80th birthday, music industry veteran Doug Morris is vacating his seat on CBS Corp.’s board of directors. The announcement came Sept. 9 on the heels of news that Les Moonves was stepping down as chairman and CEO of CBS amid a cascade of sexual assault allegations.
Morris, the only executive to have held a chief position at each of the three major music groups, joined the board in 2007 when he was chairman and CEO of Vivendi’s Umg. Last year Morris collected some $332,000 in compensation and stock, according to an SEC filing by CBS, for his service on the board.
Morris spent 2011 through 2017 as CEO of Sony Music, home to Adele, Bruce Springsteen and Tony Bennett, among many others. His first ascent to the top of the C-suite came in 1994 when Morris took on the role of president and COO of Warner Music U.S.

After months of bitter legal battles with National Amusements and two waves of sexual-misconduct allegations, Les Moonves is officially out as chairman and CEO of CBS, enabling Nai chief Shari Redstone to declare victory again.
The exit of Moonves marks the end of his 24-year run at the company as one of media’s most imposing chief executives. As part of the settlement, he and CBS are donating $20 million to one or more organizations that support the #MeToo movement.
The company was silent on the terms of a possible settlement with Moonves, who had been negotiating a $100 million exit package. However it said the charitable donations have been deducted from any severance benefits Moonves would receive, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct.
Moonves’ departure comes as part of a sweeping series of agreements that formally end hostilities between CBS and the media company’s controlling shareholder.

CBS announced late Sunday that it has reached an agreement with longtime CEO Les Moonves that will see the executive exit the company he has led for the last 15 years, effective immediately.
The CBS board also reached a settlement to end its nasty legal fight with its controlling stakeholder, National Amusements Inc. In May, CBS filed a suit against Shari Redstone and National Amusements, a family-run business that controls roughly 80 percent of the voting power in both CBS and Viacom.
Joe Ianniello, who has served as the company’s COO since 2013, will take over as president and acting CEO, while the board searches for a permanent successor. The chairman position will remain open pending the appointment of a permanent CEO.

The ticking clock and a growing sense of unease among CBS Corp.’s board of directors helped accelerate the settlement talks that will shape the future of CBS and decide the fate of chairman-ceo Leslie Moonves.
Moonves has been on a tightrope for more than a month after sexual harassment allegations were leveled against him by six women in a New Yorker expose published on July 27. The exec was already knee-deep in a battle with CBS’ controlling shareholder, National Amusements Inc. (Nai), over control of the company.
During the Labor Day holiday weekend, settlement discussions on both fronts were held among a small army of lawyers, representatives for Nai and members of CBS’ board. A final exit agreement for Moonves is expected to come together “within days, not weeks,” according to a source close to the situation. Exclusive: Just weeks before the fall TV season starts, the bitter legal battle between CBS and National Amusements over corporate control and a possible merger with Viacom may be coming to an end.
The Les Moonves-led company, which fired the first cannon with its May 14 breach of fiduciary duty suit, and the Redstone family dominated holding company are in settlements talks, we’ve learned.
With a myriad of issues on the table in the now multiple lawsuits, the recently started sit-down has not come to a conclusion over the fate of CBS CEO Moonves, who has been accused of sexual harassment and sexual assault. Two law firms are conducting independent investigations into the allegations and broader questions about workplace conduct, reporting to the sub-committee of the CBS board of directors.
The Moonves matter is currently being treated as separate from the ongoing talks as the duel investigations proceed, sources say.

On May 13, CBS chairman-ceo Leslie Moonves was preparing to declare war on parent company National Amusements. In text messages, he sought to psych up his team by quoting from “The Godfather.”
“Mattresses tomorrow a.m.,” he wrote to Joseph Ianniello, his chief operating officer, invoking Sonny Corleone’s description of going to war with a clan. He sent the message on TigerText, the disappearing message service, the day before CBS filed a lawsuit in an effort to strip Nai of control of the company.
“We won’t forget the cannoli too” Ianniello wrote back, in another “Godfather” reference.
“And take the gun,” Moonves wrote back. “We need it.”
The messages were among a handful of TigerTexts that were turned over to Nai in ongoing litigation in Delaware Chancery Court. Nai, led by Shari Redstone, has been trying to assert control over the runaway company, of which it holds 80% of the voting stock.

Shari Redstone’s National Amusements has returned fire at CBS, suing Leslie Moonves and most of the CBS board of directors as the battle for control of the company escalates.
The 66-page complaint filed Tuesday by National Amusements Inc. (Nai) in Delaware Chancery Court seeks to block the CBS board’s effort to dilute Nai’s overwhelming voting control in the company. The complaint also challenges the legality of Moonves’ severance package, asserting that the rich pact was never reviewed by the full CBS board. The Nai lawsuit follows CBS’ stunning decision to file suit May 14 against its controlling shareholder, claiming that Nai’s agenda in pursuing a merger of CBS and Viacom was detrimental to the interests of other CBS shareholders.
“As Nai’s complaint makes clear there was no ‘threat’ or ‘interference,’ and indeed there was no action that could possibly warrant the CBS directors’ unprecedented, unjustified, and...

National Amusements has blasted CBS Corp.’s legal effort to dilute the company’s voting power in the company as “irresponsible” and “inexplicable” in legal filings with the Delaware Chancery Court, where CBS’ request for a temporary restraining order is expected to go before a judge this afternoon.
The filing from National Amusements Inc. (Nai) also revealed the name of the CBS board member accused on Monday of bullying behavior toward Shari Redstone, the CBS Corp. controlling shareholder and National Amusements president at the center of the battle for control of the company. The filing cited independent CBS director Charles Gifford for his involvement in “certain incidents” in 2016 and 2017 that made National Amusements uncomfortable with his continued service on the board.

The battle over Network Ten, Australia’s No. 3 broadcaster, just intensified. Its largest shareholder, Bruce Gordon, teamed with Fox co-Executive Chairman Lachlan Murdoch to make a bid — possibly topping CBS’ announced plan to buy the company. The Australian government cleared the way for the bid this week when it overturned its media consolidation restrictions. The broadcaster filed for voluntary administration protection, similar to bankruptcy, three months ago. Bids…...

Al Capone is America’s best known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that lent Chicago its reputation as a lawless city and an interesting variety of Hollywood stars have had the leading role as Al Capone in the many films that have been made that featured him as a character.
The first film about Capone was produced when he was still making headlines. The main character may be named Antonio Camonte, but there’s little doubt as to who producer Howard Hughes had in mind when he and director Howard Hawks filmed Scarface during the Great Depression. Camonte shares more than the same initials with one Al Capone, who was about to begin his eleven-year sentence for tax evasion when the movie was released...

When you get Roger Corman and Vince Price together you tend to get a stylised horror film that is hard not to love. While Tower of London may not be their best collaboration, it is an interesting take on Shakespeare’s play of the nefarious King who killed his way to the top…
Corman’s film though is a more mix-and-match tale for Richard III which pulls in Macbeth and Hamlet to make the tale much more ghoulish. Featuring ghosts that haunt Vincent Price’s Richard of Gloucester it is very clear that Price relishes the prospect of taking on a Shakespearian role, but hams it up for all it is worth.

Dan Didio has written the latest iteration of the character for Villains Month, part of the new Forever Evil crossover event. It ties up a plot arc that’s been weaving through the New 52 books since their inception – the villain’s black diamond has appeared in the short-lived Team 7 title, as well as Catwoman Demon Knights and even Sword and Sorcery. So clearly his return is intended to be a big one.
But this isn’t the first time DC has tried to make Eclipso into a top-echelon threat. Not by a long length.
People go on about how many times Aquaman has been revamped, but I gotta tell you, I think Eclipso has him beat. Originally a sort of Jekyll-Hyde pastiche, he was released from within scientist Bruce Gordon whenever he was caught in the shadow of an eclipse. Cinelinx tips a hat to the new Rider on a Dead Horse DVD from Warner Archive!
This Warner Archive release is a Manufacture-On-Demand (Mod) DVD, and can be ordered directly from WBShop.com.
The Set-up
Double-crosses, greed, and murder follow the discovery of gold in the western wilderness, setting two men against each other in a race to get the gold first. Stars John Vivyan, Bruce Gordon, Kevin Hagen, and Lisa Lu.
Directed by: Herbert L. Strock
The Delivery
One of my favorite classic films is the Humphrey Bogart adventure Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It's a tale of the lust for gold and the depths men will sink to. Rider on a Dead Horse can best be described as a remake of that film, but this 1962 Phoenix Films western put some entertaining twists on the original formula. Plus, it has Dr. Baker from Little House on the Prairie as...

In a recent interview, director Guillermo Del Toro revealed that development on "Dark Universe," a film focusing on DC's supernatural characters, is now underway. Del Toro named some of the heroes — if they can be called that — of the proposed film, including John Constantine, Deadman, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Etrigan The Demon, and Zatanna. But with such offbeat protagonists, it begs the question: what of the villains?
This week in Hollywood Justice, we're going to run down a list of five villains who pose a threat that extends beyond the world of traditional superheroics, and into the supernatural.
Trigon
A foe of the Teen Titans, the extra-dimensional demon known as Trigon is also of the father of one of their members, the mysterious Raven. The threat posed by Trigon led to the formation of the modern incarnation of the team, when Raven sought their help in thwarting his plans to conquer Earth.

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it.s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it.s the year that the headline is from. It.s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 25th successful year! Steve and I collaborated last Spring on an all-Vincent Price issue of The Globe and I.ve been writing a regular monthly movie-related column since. Since there is no on-line version of The Globe, I post all of my articles here at We Are Movie Geeks. This month’s edition of The Globe takes place in 1947. The headline on the cover will scream “Al Capone Dead!” and there will be several articles about the famous gangster.

American actor Bruce Gordon has passed away just days after the death of his The Untouchables co-star Paul Picerni.
The 94 year old, who lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, died last Thursday after a long illness, according to Santa Fe Funeral Options, a local funeral home.
The news comes just a week after his TV colleague Picerni suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Llano, California.
Gordon made his Broadway debut in 1937, playing several small roles in The Fireman's Flame. His other Broadway credits include Arsenic and Old Lace, Medea, Richard II, The Lark and Nowhere to Go But Up.
His television career kicked off in the 1940s, with guest appearances on several U.S. series, including I Spy, Have Gun - Will Travel, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, Bonanza and Police Woman, among others.
In the late 1950s, he was the host of espionage docudrama Behind Closed Doors, and in the 1960s he enjoyed a recurring role on Peyton Place.
But Gordon will perhaps be best remembered for his role as mob boss Frank Nitti on classic 1960s U.S. TV series The Untouchables.
His feature film credits include Love Happy (1949), The Buccaneer (1958) and Tower of London (1962).
Information on Gordon's survivors was not made available as WENN went to press.

Fuquay-varina - It was a speedy two days with major stars dropping into my neighborhood.
On a Thursday night the man who made predicted FedEx arrived at a Durham library. Mister McFeely (David Newell) still fits in his Speedy Delivery uniform and hat as he greeted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood fans of all ages. Most of the ages were under seven. Luckily I had brought along a little kid in order not to stick out.
McFeely was at the end of a weeklong tour around the state to touch base with the kids. Lately whenever any star of kid focused tv shows comes to town, it’s part of some over inflated media spectacular stage show at the sports arena. There’s singing, dancing, indoor fireworks and motorcycle stunts meant to dazzle a three year old. Plus there’s a $18 convenience charge on the tickets. But this was not McFeely’s type of entertainment.
