“The longest [running] Black family drama on television leaves a legacy of knowing that these stories are worthy, knowing that there’s an audience for them,” declares producer/director DeMane Davis about the legacy that “Queen Sugar” will leave on the TV landscape. For our recent webchat she adds, “It’s not a show that has a lot of bells and whistles. It doesn’t need it because it has these faces. It has this skin. It has this hair and then it has these directors of photography,” she says, “who know how to light that skin, know how to get light into the eyes, so that you see the depths of someone and you see the layers. There’s nothing like this on television.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.
Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.
In Variety’s Power of Women cover story celebrating the series’ legacy, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker said she was “euphoric” about bookending the series as director and insisted she was wholly “satisfied” with the farewell ode.
“‘Queen Sugar’ is the longest commitment I’ve ever had — and we’re talking relationships too — and I did my very best every single day,” DuVernay explained, sitting alongside executive producer Oprah Winfrey. “In the end, there was no sadness; I was just so pleased, so proud. It's the last chapter of the Bordelon family's story in the seventh season of the Queen Sugar TV show on OWN. As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Queen Sugar is cancelled or renewed for season eight. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustrated when their viewing habits and opinions aren't considered, we invite you to rate all of the seventh season episodes of Queen Sugar here.

There were plenty of highs and lows on Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 4 from the surprise of Darla's past to Prosper proposing to Sandy, but only one character had me yelling at the screen.
Micah.
How could Micah do that to his mother? How could he dredge up one of Charley's worst moments and try to sell it for profit or his own fame?
Micah isn't some desperate college student in need of money. He's not going to get kicked out of school or lose his place to live if he can't pay the bills. His parents are wealthy, and they pay for everything.
So there's no financial reason for Micah to sell out someone he cares about for a quick buck.
Was it to fit in with Zane and the crew at Ivory? If so, that's just pathetic. Zane has made it clear that his only interest in Micah depends...

Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay are two of the creative leaders honored for Variety’s 2022 Power of Women presented by Lifetime. For more, click here.
Oprah Winfrey has spent most of her career talking, so it’s a little surprising that the only sound you hear from the porch of her second home in Maui is absolute silence. Forget about the ocean waves or rustling palm trees. Ok, if you’re lucky enough to hang with Oprah for an entire afternoon, this zen will be interrupted by the periodic squawking of wild roosters. In such a tranquil retreat, you can think clearly, cradled in the beauty of all that Hawaii has to offer.
It’s this very place of refuge, in fact, where Winfrey set a trap for filmmaker Ava DuVernay that would launch one of their greatest collaborations: OWN’s “Queen Sugar.”

When “Queen Sugar” star Dawn-Lyen Gardner’s Charley Bordelon was missing from the trailer and key art for Season 7 of the OWN drama series, fans questioned where the middle Bordelon sibling had gone.
When the footage debuted, Variety reported that Gardner would not be a series regular for the final season’s 13 episodes, noting that at the end of Season 6, the character made her reconciliation with estranged husband Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett) more official, accepting his remarriage proposal and planning to move back to Los Angeles. With the primary action of Season 7 taking place in the fictional Louisiana parish of St. Josephine, Charley’s storyline would instead be tracked in a number of episodes across the season.
But ahead of the debut of Tuesday’s season premiere, Gardner took to social media to explain that she “did not participate” in the making of the show’s final hours.

The Bordelon family's return for their final season wasn't as much of a bang as was expected, but more of a slow burn.
Something was missing from Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 1, or should we say, someone.
Dawn-Lyen Gardner chose not to return as a regular cast member this season, and her absence was felt during this premiere.
Charley was such an integral part of this series that simply having her name mentioned or her face show up on the phone wasn't good enough. Queen Sugar may follow the Bordelon family, but Charley's journey led viewers into this world.
Charley struggled to feel a part of this family. Her determination, intelligence, and love helped save it from the brink. And with Sam Landry again trying to destroy the family farm, it feels like they need her now more than ever.
But Charley and Davis are offscreen, as Charley chose to pursue her political career in California,...

Even if last season’s finale of the OWN drama Queen Sugar ended on a high note, with the Bordelon land being declared a historical landmark (and keeping the villainous Landrys from taking it), it’s safe to assume there’s more drama to come in the seventh and final season, which kicks off September 6. The series, created by Ava DuVernay and based on the novel by Natalie Baszile, has put the Bordelon siblings — Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph-Angel (Kofi Siriboe) — through the paces over six seasons and we can only hope there’s a happy ending in store for them all once the series finale arrives later this fall. Wesley tells TV Insider that playing Nova all these years has taught her much in her own life. “She’s taught me self-care. That’s a big thing I’ve taken away, is just learning how to...

It’s nearly time for “Queen Sugar” fans to “take flight” one last time, as we prepare to say goodbye to the Bordelon family.
OWN has released the official trailer for the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, created by Ava DuVernay and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“If we do not honor our past, we dishonor our future. Listen,” says Rutina Wesley’s Nova, the eldest Bordelon sibling, as the clip begins, previewing the tense and tender scenes that will play out over the next 13 episodes.
The first look, set to Al Green’s “Love and Happiness,” tees up the latest developments in the lives of Bordelons: Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) have welcomed their second child, a daughter, and they continue to fight for their family’s future by exorcising their personal demons — namely, his deal with the...

“Queen Sugar” has been renewed for Season 7 at OWN, with that season set to be the show’s last. Writing on the new season has begun, with production set to begin in early 2022.
“To everything, there is a season,” said series creator Ava DuVernay. “And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making ‘Queen Sugar’ with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television. To write and produce seven seasons of a modern drama centered on a Black family is a radical act in our industry and a triumph that has far exceeded every hope I held. Now I feel strongly that the story, which began as a sunrise of a suggestion from Oprah, is ready for its sunset as a dream fully realized. ‘Queen Sugar’ has been one of the true joys of my career and my gratitude is buoyant and boundless.

Across its five seasons, Issa Rae’s shrewd sitcom about the millennial goose chase for love and success against the backdrop of LA’s indifference has gradually moved in the direction of urban fantasy. Paychecks stay the same, but the clothes grow more sumptuous. Apartments sprout accent walls and lamps from West Elm. “Insecure” has always afforded its characters hefty insulation from the real world, but its newest season, filmed earlier this year, feels set in an alternate universe where people never stopped going out to eat and putting on real pants. How you respond to “Insecure” Season 5 compared to Season 4 will correlate with how you’ve welcomed the series’ subtle key change. The more in love you are with its well-worn circle of friends, the more relieved you’ll be to discover that nothing, not even a pandemic, can infiltrate their deliberately constrained world. I, for one, was delighted.

Gearing up for Tuesdays this fall? The TV lineup has something for everyone with titles like Queen Sugar, The Flash, The Bachelorette, and more returning. Below, we’re rounding up a few of the highly-anticipated titles. Queen Sugar Louisiana’s Bordelon family face life’s struggles together, which will be as necessary as ever in the drama’s sixth season. Stressed about his growing family with wife Darla (Bianca Lawson), Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) crosses moral (and legal) lines. “He wants to do whatever he can to provide for his unborn baby,” says producing director Lisa France. His outspoken sister, investigative journalist Nova (Rutina Wesley), “experiences some strong reactions to those she’s trying to expose,” France adds. At least impassioned sibling Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) is in a good place as she (secretly) romances her reformed ex-husband, Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett). The good book says joy cometh in the morning, but today’s unveiling of the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations distinctly lacked such jubilation for some.
Revealed semi-virtually by the father-daughter duo of Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones, who historically both won Emmys last year, it certainly was an extremely joyous morning Tuesday for the Princess Diana-rich latest season of Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s I May Destroy You, HBO Max’s Hacks and its star Jean Smart.
In addition, Amazon’s Underground Railroad, AppleTV+’s Ted Lasso, Disney+’s WandaVision and The Mandalorian, as well as FX’s Pose, which bowed out in June, saw some prayers answered.

“We were literally just one episode into filming when we had to shut down because of Covid,” Queen Sugar executive producer Paul Garnes says about Season 5 of the Ava DuVernay-created OWN series executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and hailing from Warner Bros Television. “We used that opportunity to reset and repivot the show to be more relevant to the audience and I think to all of us involved.”

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of Queen Sugar’s Season 5 finale
“Looking back over the season, as emotional as it was for people to watch it when it aired, it was very emotional even when we shot it,” says Queen Sugar executive producer Paul Garnes of the fifth season of the Ava DuVernay created series and its Onward finale last night.
After a 10-episode run that chronicled and detailed the coronavirus pandemic, police violence, the death of George Floyd, and the politics of division on Black America, the OWN drama based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel took the lacerated Bordelon siblings, their offspring, extended family and rural Louisiana community to an optimistic place, or sorts.
