Amazon MGM Studios has partnered with The Wonder Project to produce faith-based films and series, Variety has learned. Under the deal, Amazon has ordered the series “House of David” for Prime Video.
The Wonder Project was recently launched by veteran producer Jon Erwin and entertainment executive Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten. Dallas Jenkins, the creator and producer-director of the hit Biblical series “The Chosen,” is a large shareholder and special advisor to the company.
“When we met with Jon, Kelly, and Dallas, their clear and passionate vision for The Wonder Project and their ambition to nurture universal stories of love, triumph, and spirituality moved us.” said Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios. “We are very excited about the scope, scale and storytelling involved with ‘House of David’ and look forward to sharing this epic and many others with our global Prime Video customers.”

Amazon MGM Studios is getting spiritual.
The company announced Wednesday that it’s brokered a partnership with the recently formed Wonder Project, which bills itself as an independent studio designed to “develop series and films rooted in spirituality.” The latter is led by veteran producer Jon Erwin (Jesus Revolution) and former Netflix and YouTube exec Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, and counts The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins among its largest shareholders and special advisers. As part of the new pact, Prime Video has already ordered its first project, House of David, to series.
Per Amazon, the logline reads: “House of David follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. A prophet prepares to overthrow him — anointing the outcast shepherd boy David as a second king. As Saul’s fury grows, David navigates love, violence and politics in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace.

Because Van Helsing season 5 is the show’s final run, expectations are high that the vampire apocalypse series will be able to end on its own terms and provide closure to fans. Showrunner Jonathan Lloyd Walker, who took over from Neil Labute in season 4, recently confirmed on Twitter that production has wrapped, so fans won’t have long to wait to see a conclusion to the story of Vanessa Van Helsing, the descendant of the famed vampire hunter who has the power to reverse the conversion of humans into bloodsucking fiends.

Syfy said today that production has resumed on the fifth and final season of Van Helsing, its action-horror series from Nomadic Pictures and Dynamic Television. Sons of Anarchy alum Kim Coates has joined the cast along with Ali Liebert and Steve Bacic.
Coates — who co-starred as “Tig” Trager on Soa — will play Count Dalibor, the husband of Olivia who, despite his best intentions, makes some disastrous choices. Liebert will play Nina, a vampire with a colorful past that involves Julius (Aleks Paunovic) and a hidden agenda that entails a lot of death. Bacic will portray the father, a wild vampire who dresses in animal skins and has been hiding in an abandoned mine with a child.
Kelly Overton, Jonathan Scarfe, Tricia Helfer, Keeya King, Paunovic and Nicole Munoz star in Van Helsing, which its producers say is the first drama series to restart filming in Canada — namely Kamloops and Vancouver.

When spirits are trapped, they tend to get angry, making life a living hell for residents of a small Alaskan town that's riddled with the restless dead in Ghost Wars. The new Syfy series premieres this October, but before it does, you can get an idea of the ghoulish encounters to come in a new trailer featuring Vincent D'Onofrio, Kim Coates, and Meat Loaf Aday.
"Set in a remote Alaskan town that has been overrun by paranormal forces, the series focuses on local outcast Roman Mercer who must overcome the town’s prejudices and his own personal demons if he’s to harness his repressed psychic powers and save everyone from the mass haunting that’s threatening to destroy them all."
Ghost Wars stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Kim Coates, Avan Jogia, Kandyse McClure and Meat Loaf. Simon Barry serves as the creator/showrunner, while the show is written and executive produced by Dennis Heaton.

The dead will not rest in a small Alaskan town on the new Syfy series Ghost Wars. With a cast that includes Vincent D'Onofrio and Meat Loaf, Ghost Wars had a paranormal presence at Comic-Con this past week, and Syfy has now revealed the first trailer online.

Syfy will soon not be a safe place for vampires. The cable network has picked up Van Helsing, a 13-episode series from writer/showrunner Neil Labute (Billy & Billie, Full Circle) that will provide a new take on the familiar tale. Along with Labute, Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev from Nomadic Pictures (the company from which Syfy acquired Van Helsing), Simon Barry, Evan Tyler, Dave Brown, and Daniel March will all serve as executive producers on the series. Per Deadline, Syfy’s Van Helsing “centers on Vanessa Helsing, the daughter of famous vampire hunter and Dracula nemesis Abraham Van Helsing. She is resurrected five years in the future to find out that vampires have taken over the world and that she possesses unique power over them. She is humanity’s last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.” “Van Helsing represents a new mythology in sci-fi by challenging traditional vampire rules,...

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

On Saturday evening the Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced this year’s winning motion picture, television, and new media productions at the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
In what’s become a most interesting awards season, Birdman took home the big award of the night. The Oscars look to be a two horse race between Boyhood and Birdman from all appearances.
The other PGA nominees were American Sniper, Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Gone Girl, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Nightcrawler, The Theory Of Everything and Whiplash.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony is Sunday, while the Directors Guild will announce it’s winners on Saturday, February 7.

Oscar-snubbed “Life Itself” and “The Lego Movie” win documentary and animation awards
“Birdman” was named the best-produced feature of 2014 at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday night, giving the daring Alejandro Iñárritu film new life in the Oscar race for Best Picture.
“Boyhood” was considered the most likely PGA winner and the Oscar leader, but the critical favorite now finds itself in the same spot “The Social Network” was in four years ago. That film swept the critics’ awards and the Golden Globes, but then lost the PGA to “The King’s Speech,” which rode a string of guild wins to victory at the Oscars.

Ever since "The Hurt Locker" triumphed over "Avatar" at the 2010 Producers Guild Awards, it has been rather obvious to me that this precursor announcement is the skeleton key to understanding how the Oscar vote will likely play out. Why? Because — as we've noted a number of times — the PGA is the only group that shares the preferential ballot system the Academy employs. So what won this year? "Birdman" won, that's what. And for those who were chalking this up as a boring, telegraphed Oscar season… So, what does this mean for the rest of the season? It means, clearly, "Birdman" could well be poised to take the Best Picture Oscar next month. I, for one, thought "The Imitation Game" would be the one to unseat "Boyhood" this evening and assert itself as the industry favorite. I even thought "American Sniper" had an outside shot. I wasn't looking at "Birdman," though,...

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

Richard Linklater‘s personal indie “Boyhood” and David Fincher’s dark blockbuster “Gone Girl” are among the nominees for the Producers Guild of America’s top film award, the PGA announced on Monday morning.
Other nominees for the PGA honor, which tends to be a reliable indicator of Oscar potential, are Clint Eastwood‘s “American Sniper,” the adventurous comic story “Birdman,” British biopics “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything,” Wes Anderson‘s stylish “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” the driving indie “Whiplash,” Bennett Miller’s subtle “Foxcatcher” and Dan Gilroy’s dark and creepy “Nightcrawler.”

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday its list of film and television nominees for its 2014 awards, and the list is as notable for its omissions as it is for its selections.
Among the films in the running for the top prize -- known formally as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures -- are "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "Gone Girl," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "The Theory of Everything," and "Whiplash."
But it's the films that were left off the list that had awards season prognosticators in a tizzy Monday. "Selma," "Unbroken," and "Into the Woods" all failed to score nominations, leading some to wonder if those movies' Oscar chances have dimmed significantly.
On the television front, "American Horror Story: Freak Show," "Fargo," "The Normal Heart," "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," and "Sherlock" all scored nominations in the long-form television category.

In a decidedly rare movie these days, Syfy is letting you in on one of its original movies that’s less than two weeks away.
There isn’t much to know at this point, beyond the fact that there’s some potential to the concept, but at least we know who we’ll be watching.
Sci-Fi fans might want a little more info on exactly what “mutant” means, because it might turn out all too similar to “zombie,” but if you’re looking for a slick, popcorn adventure, having people emerge from their bunkers ten years post apocalypse gives you a lot of options. That’s especially true if you throw in a mysterious stranger with tales of a safe haven.
Keep an eye out for this one, though you don’t have a long time to decide.
