Exclusive: Ahead of its Berlinale debut, Screen talked to the producers behind the buzzed-about John le Carré adaptation, which cost $5m per episode.
With a budget and creative team that most film producers can only dream of, it’s easy to see why Susanne Bier’s The Night Manager is among the most anticipated projects to screen at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.
It’s a sign of the times, however, that the project isn’t a feature screening in main competition but in fact a six-part TV series whose first two episodes are showing in the glittering TV strand Berlinale Special Series.
The BBC-amc co-commission combines acclaimed source material from iconic spy novelist John le Carré, Oscar-winning director Bier, a cast including Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Debicki, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander, and in-demand screenwriter David Farr.

It’s safe to say I had some rather high (or low depending on your movie-cheese tolerance) expectations for Ice Soldiers. After all, the film comes from the pen of Jonathan Tydor, who wrote the fantastically over-the-top and ridiculously cheesy Dolph Lundgren-starring sci-fi horror Dark Angel, aka I Come in Peace, back in 1990 and despite a substantial 13 year gap between scripts (he last wrote and directed the Eric Roberts film The Kings Guard in 2000), I still had hopes that this films concept meant the movie would err on the (right) side of insanity…
The film follows a scientific expedition that unearths three genetically engineered Russian super soldiers (the titular Ice Soldiers) frozen in ice since the height of the Cold War. Bodies that have been buried beneath the...

LONDON -- United International Pictures (UIP), the overseas releasing arm for Universal, Paramount and Dreamworks, said Friday it plans to re-release Pride & Prejudice in the U.K. and Ireland with the title's extended U.S. release ending. The distributor said the decision to re-release the movie comes on the back of a wave of British press coverage and debate over the alternative ending used for the movie in the U.S. Made by Working Title for Universal, the U.S. version of Pride carries an extended scene at the end with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Fitzwilliam Darcy playing out a longer, more lingering romantic clinch. Producer Paul Webster said: "We were absolutely delighted in the continued interest in Pride & Prejudice and are excited about the opportunity to show the US ending to the British public." Directed by Joe Wright from an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel by Deborah Moggach, Pride is produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, for Working Title Films, and Paul Webster, and executive produced by Debra Hayward and Liza Chasin. Jane Frazer takes co-producer credit.
