Flashbacks are tricky to pull off because they either help or hinder the story.
On The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 7, Ellie's plight to save Joel puts her in a reflective mood, delivering the HBO hit's take on the "Left Behind" Dlc from the first video game in the series.
The flashback to Ellie's time in the quarantine zone enhanced the source material in many ways because there's still much we don't know about how Ellie wound up in Marlene's care.
Are we to assume Marlene showed up at the mall before or after Riley died?
That's the most plausible scenario.
Ellie's life in the quarantine zone was far from spectacular. For many children, having a roof over their heads and proceeding with whatever career Fedra offered them was enough.
But for Ellie and Riley, that wasn't enough, and it explains why Riley departed and how Ellie was so frustrated...

Tales of revenge with a post-apocalyptic backdrop are typically very good or very bad.
The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 5 confirmed my suspicions that The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 4 was planting seeds that would sprout one episode later and leave us with more casualties than before.
Kathleen was difficult to read because, on the surface, she came off as a tyrant who murdered anyone who opposed her.
Learning about her past and how she came to be in this position of power allowed us to understand her motivations and get on board with her cause, or at the very least, understand it.
Kathleen's drive to avenge her brother's death was her ultimate undoing, but in her defense, why should her brother have been collateral to save Sam's life?
This post-apocalyptic world is cutthroat. People are turning on each other, and the others are hiding out, hoping they somehow...

Melanie Lynskey, who starred in the latest episode of The Last of Us as a ruthless warlord, has responded to criticism of her casting in the HBO video game adaptation.
The Yellowjackets star, who plays revolutionary leader Kathleen in the hit show, defended herself on Twitter on Wednesday (8 February), after America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry wrote that “[Lynskey’s] body says life of luxury… not post-apocalyptic warlord”.
In the since-deleted tweet, Curry also referenced the Terminator franchise, adding: “Where is Linda Hamilton when you need her?”
Lynskey then called out Curry for sharing a photo of her in a glamorous magazine shoot to make her point.
“Firstly – this is a photo from my cover shoot for InStyle magazine, not a still from HBO’s The Last of Us,” Lynskey wrote.
“And I’m playing a person who meticulously planned and executed an overthrow of Fedra. I am supposed to be Smart,...

Merle Dandridge — the actor who plays Marlene in The Last of Us video game and the new HBO series — has a recognizable last name. And it has many wondering if she is related to Hollywood icon, Dorothy Dandridge.
Merle Dandridge plays Marlene in ‘The Last of Us’ show and video game
HBO’s The Last of Us is a sci-fi drama based on the popular 2013 Naughty Dog video game of the same name. The show follows the story of the game, introducing a post-apocalyptic world in which a mutated fungus has infected most of the human race, turning nearly everyone into a zombie.
The story centers on Joel and Ellie, two unlikely companions who set out to find Ellie a safe haven while navigating the zombie-infested world. On their quest, the duo also faces the threat of scavengers and survivors, as well as their ruthless governing body, Fedra.

Tess's death was just the set-up for the heartache we endured on The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 3.
It's rare for a TV series to be able to introduce multiple characters in a single episode and make you care deeply for them when they die in the same installment.
If The Last of Us Season 1 has taught us anything, the world these characters reside in has little hope because the government made terrible decisions to contain the fungus.
Bill was a fan favorite in the first video game. Frank didn't get any time to shine in that game, so the series successfully fleshed out both characters and showcased their relationship over several years.
Nick Offerman was brilliant and managed to nail Bill's quirks. It's unfortunate he died because I expected a lot of back and forth between him and Ellie
However, this is a deviation from the source material I can get behind.

When news broke that HBO was adapting The Last of Us, there was excitement, but some concerns, too.
Video game adaptations haven't had the best track record when translated to the screen, but thankfully, The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 1 was an excellent introduction to the universe made famous in 2013.
Extended episodes are tricky to pull off, but by the end of the series premiere, not a single scene was wasted in setting up the characters and conflicts that will drive The Last of Us Season 1.
We'll go back to the start because there was undoubtedly a lot of excitement at seeing more of Sarah, Joel's daughter.
Sarah witnessed the outbreak's origins, and everything she went through leading to her death was harrowing.
All she wanted was to have the best birthday for her father, but instead, they had to leave their home in the dead of night because people were turning into killers.
