Proto-punk legends MC5 will release their first album in over 53 years this October, with Heavy Lifting arriving just months after the deaths of guitarist Wayne Kramer and drummer Dennis Thompson, MC5’s last surviving original members.
Back in 2022, Kramer first revealed that the band, along with producer Bob Ezrin, were working on an all-star album that would serve as the first MC5 LP since their High Time was released in 1971.

The LP, titled Heavy Lifting, was originally announced back in 2022. It will finally see the light of day on October 18th, one day before MC5 get inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame via the Musical Excellence Award.
Kramer co-wrote 12 of the album’s 13 songs with Brad Brooks, who served as the band’s singer during their final years before Kramer’s passing. First single “Boys Who Play With Matches” can be streamed below.
The album features a number of prominent guests, including Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Alice in Chains’ William DuVall, Guns N’ Roses’ Slash, Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath, and Living Colour’s Vernon Reid, among others.

Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson, the founding MC5 drummer and the last surviving original member of the pioneering proto-punk group, died Wednesday, The Detroit Free Press reported. He was 75.
An exact cause of death was not given, though Thompson had reportedly suffered a series of medical issues in recent months, including a heart attack in April.

The devastation of the fire that ripped through West Maui on Aug. 8 is hard to comprehend. It killed at least 97 people and damaged or destroyed 2,200 structures, and the estimated cost to rebuild is $5.5 billion.
In the first few days after the fires, stars including Jason Momoa and Mia Tyler implored tourists to stay away. In the weeks since, many have, even as most of Maui’s hotels remained open. According to The New York Times, on Oct. 9 — the day after West Maui began a staged reopening — there were more than 4,500 arrivals in Maui, down 27 percent from the same day in 2019.
On Nov. 1, with the reopening of the West Maui section that stretches from Kahana to Ka’anapali, only the devastated town of Lahaina remains closed.

Roger Waters, in classic Roger Waters fashion, suggested he’s not ready to rule out the possibility that Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel might’ve been a “false flag operation” during a recent interview with Glenn Greenwald.
During the conversation, Waters couched his discussions of the attack — during which Hamas militants killed more than 1,4000 people, many unarmed civilians, and took hundreds of hostages — in heavy speculation. For instance, he said his initial reaction to Oct. 7 was, “let’s wait and see what happened,” and that his second was: “How the...

Roy Orbison felt Elvis Presley‘s label wasn’t that great. He said the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll wasn’t a big fan of the music he made at that label. Orbison had a lot to say about his own experiences there. Regardless, the head of the label received an incredibly important honor the same night Elvis did.
Roy Orbison was on the same label as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins
During a 1988 interview with Rolling Stone, Orbison discussed signing on producer Sam Phillip’s label, Sun Records. Sun Records boasted many early rock ‘n’ roll artists, the most famous being Elvis. “Well, Johnny Cash was on Sun Records — he was making unusual records,” Orbison remembered. “And Presley was there, and Carl Perkins. I was really impressed with that little chicken on the Sun label, because it represented something unique.” The chicken in question was on the label’s logo.

David Gilmour has shared a documentary detailing alleged antisemitism from his former Pink Floyd bandmate Roger Waters, adding another chapter to the decades-long feud between the musicians.
Gilmour retweeted a post about the documentary, entitled The Dark Side of Roger Waters, from the Campaign Against Antisemitism, which produced the report. In the video, BBC journalist John Ware interviews Norbert Statchel, Waters’ former saxophonist, and Bob Ezrin, the music producer who helped helm Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Both men, who are Jewish, recalled experiences in which Rogers said things that were antisemitic.
Statchel retold an instance in which Rogers imitated a stereotypically poor Polish woman as a reference to his Jewish ancestors, and another in which the bassist expressed outrage at a restaurant serving “Jew food.” Erzin recalled Waters describing Bryan Morrison, Pink Floyd’s manager at the time, as a “fucking Jew.” The report also unearths a 2010 email in...

Roger Waters has long denied he’s antisemitic. His former collaborators — including the celebrated producer Bob Ezrin — are telling a different story.
A new documentary, The Dark Side of Roger Waters, includes claims from Ezrin and former Waters saxophonist Norbert Stachel. Both are Jewish, and both claim Waters made offensive remarks about Jewish people to them. The documentary, a 37-minute project produced by the U.K. group Campaign Against Antisemitism, also includes screenshots of a 2010 email Waters wrote to his team that suggested emblazoning his famous inflatable pig with a Star of David...

Roger Waters has long been accused of antisemitism, in part because of his frequent condemnation of Israel and in part because he has a tendency to use … inflammatory stage design to get his politics across. A new investigation by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), however, quotes prominent Jewish musicians who claim to have experienced antisemitism from the former Pink Floyd bassist firsthand.
In a documentary entitled The Dark Side of Roger Waters, BBC journalist John Ware interviews Norbert Statchel, Waters’ former saxophonist, and Bob Ezrin, the music producer who helped helm Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Both men are Jewish. According to Statchel, after learning that the saxophonist was of Ashkenazi Jewish descent — with ancestors who were murdered in the Holocaust — Waters offered to “introduce” Statchel to his dead grandmother, then began an impression of a peasant Polish woman.
“Now you’ve met your grandmother! How do you feel now?...

Alice Cooper has formally announced his new album, Road, out August 25th. In anticipation, he’s shared the lead single, “I’m Alice.”
As the album title implies, Cooper brought in his touring band to cut the new LP, injecting a concert-like energy to the recordings. For example, “I’m Alice” is a raucous number with fiery axework from lead guitarist Nita Strauss, and acts as a theme song of sorts: “I’m Alice – I’m the master of madness; the sultan of surprise!”
“For Road, I wanted the band to be involved in the foundation of all the songs,” said Cooper in a press release. “I only see these guys when we’re on the road. So, I wanted them to be as tight as they are for the show but on all new material. When you have a band this good, I believe in showing it off, and...

“This is a song of surrender,” Bono ad-libs on a low-key, acoustic version of U2’s 1984 epic “Bad,” one of many highlights from their fascinating new album, Songs of Surrender. Instead of the massive, impossibly moving showstopper about young heroin deaths that floored Live Aid nearly 40 years ago, “Bad” here becomes an acoustic ballad, complete with delicate cello and wildly different lyrics that transform the song into a meditation about giving in to the passage of time and the loss and resignation that comes with that process.

Near the end of U2’s new album, Songs of Surrender, the band kicks into the familiar opening chords of their 1980 breakthrough single “I Will Follow.” But there are no drums, bass, or electric guitar, and Bono quickly begins singing new lyrics that better fit his perspective on life at age 62, rather than 22.
“I was on the outside when you said, you said you needed me,” he sings. “In the mirror a reflection of the boy I can never be/A boy tried hard to be a man/His mother...

Lou Reed: The RCA & Arista Album Collection (Sony Legacy)
In a nutshell: If you are a Lou Reed fan, you should get this seventeen-cd box set regardless of how much of its contents you already own. Everything has been remastered; I compared the sound on six albums I have earlier CDs of (I did not compare the new CDs to my old vinyl, as that's apples and oranges), and on five the sound is greatly improved, more focused and with greater clarity; The Bells in particular has its murky sound fixed but retains its darkness. The exception is Take No Prisoners; it may be, given the circumstances under which this concert was recorded, that there wasn't much to work with there, but the sound is just as good as before. Throw in a very nice book -- not booklet; this thing's hardbound and roughly 11"x12" -- with co-producer Hal Willner's reminiscences,...

"What the f--k does he know about rap…" Ezrin, 66, - who was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2004 - is best known for his work with Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Pink Floyd, among others. "Unlike other creators in his genre like Jay-z, Tupac, Biggie or even M.C. Hammer for that matter, it's unlikely...

As directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn proved with 2010's "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage," they can take even the nerdiest, most seemingly inoffensive band, and turn out something fascinating, amusing, insightful and even at times moving. And on paper, tackling shock rocker Alice Cooper—whose onstage persona inspired decades of artists to actively piss off parents—should be an obvious next step. Yet surprisingly, and disappointingly, the filmmakers—along with third co-director Reginald Harkema—miss the mark with the mostly dull and uninvolving "Super Duper Alice Cooper," a portrait of the rock star that lacks the very edge and sense of danger that the artist himself exuded in his prime. And given the access the team behind the movie had not only to Cooper himself, but many key players around him, frustration mounts as one realizes that this could've been so much more. Famed promoter and manager Shep Gordon,...

Jared Leto has had many public identities, starting with his breakthrough role as the inscrutable (and illiterate) love interest of Claire Danes on My So-Called Life. Since then he's proven to be one of his generation's most committed actors, losing 28 pounds to star as a heroin addict in Requiem for a Dream and gaining 60 pounds to play John Lennon's assassin in Chapter 27. But Leto left aside a thriving film career – which also included Fight Club and American Psycho – to remake himself as the lead singer of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Here's eleven of my favorite new rock tunes for your early spring listening pleasure. Enjoy the melodic sunshine, people.
"Eskimo Kiss" The Kooks Junk of the Heart (Astralwerks)
Not sure why my fellow critics insist on dropping the "sounds like The Strokes" tag on these Brits. And some scribes have whined they aren't "edgy" enough. So what. I hear more of The Kinks and The La's as reference points. And to me, that's much better company if you love more pop in your rock. Case in point, the infectious ear candy of "Eskimo Kiss," my pick hit from their latest long player (LP). Currently on tour in the U.S. of A.
"Stay At Home" Yellow Ostrich Strange Land (Barsuk)
Speaking of the Strokes...I hear more than a hint of their aggro-guitar pop rock in this very fine track from former Wisconsinite/current New Yorker Alex Schaaf. His newly...

One of the best things about today’s modern music world is the ease with which bands are able to record. Previously, bands would need to hoard bookoo cash in order to get precious studio time and present a professional sounding album. The line between amateur and professional has become radically blurred, and with major labels becoming more and more unnecessary when it comes to releasing a record, creativity has never flourished as much as it is today (just look at the output of Nine Inch Nails during their final, label-free years). Case-in-point, Crosses – or technically †††, which is not be confused with the Justice album, † – the new side project of Deftones crooner Chino Moreno. “I’ll Bite Your Face Off”, the new video from Alice Cooper, can be seen below. The song comes off the legendary rocker’s hugely anticipated new album, “Welcome 2 My Nightmare”, which will be released on September 13 via Universal Music Enterprises. Recorded with longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin, who produced the original multi-platinum “Welcome To My Nightmare” album in 1975, the LP picks up right where they left off, with Alice trapped in his own warped mind. That original album is an all-time rock classic that spawned a worldwide theatrical tour and pioneering U.S. TV special and cemented Alice Cooper as a visionary trailblazer whose influence persists today in rock, metal,...

Ke$ha is not only the queen of glitter and Jack Daniel's, but she's also a bonafide rockstar--that is, according to Alice Cooper.
Cooper's new album, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare," the sequel to his platinum 1975 concept album, drops Sept. 13. Cooper not only reunites with producer Bob Ezrin, who produced the first "Nightmare," but he also reunites with the three surviving members of the original Alice Cooper group--guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway and drummer Neal Smith-- who appear on three tracks. Other collaborators include Buckcherry's Keith Nelson, Vince Gill ("A Runaway Train") and "Tik Tok" singer Ke$ha ("What Baby Wants").
And if you're asking yourself, 'Why Ke$ha?'--that was Cooper's intention.
"I met (Ke$ha) at the Grammys," Cooper told Billboard magazine, "and I immediately looked at her and went, 'This girl is not a pop diva. She's a rock singer.' She would much rather be...

Flea, the rambunctious bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers has revealed through an interview with Spinner that he recently thought about quitting the band and leaving his tighty-whitey stage antics behind him.
He said he asked his compatriots for a two year sabbatical in order to regroup his thoughts. “We’ve been going really hard for a lot of years with small breaks here and there, but never a major break,” Flea said. “And I just felt like I wanted to take two years away just to really look and see if the band was something we should be doing.”
Flea attributes his friendship with lead singer Anthony Kiedis, which dates back to childhood, as an inspiration and big reason for his decision to continue making music. “I said, ‘Together let’s do this, let’s make this album, I love you, and let’s f**king rock.

Despite being the global phenomenon it is today, only a modest reception greeted Kiss’ first three albums on initial release back in the 1970s. While all very good rock albums, it seemed Kiss, Hotter Than Hell, and Dressed To Kill just couldn’t find a big audience. Between them they had what are now thought of as classic Kiss songs such as “Strutter,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” and “Parasite.” But it was the release of the stunning live album Alive! which turned Kiss fever into a full-blown pandemic.
On March 15, 1976, a mere six months after Alive!, the band released its fourth studio album, which was produced by Bob Ezrin. It had rock anthems, ballads,...

Industry insiders are reporting that rock and metal legend Alice Cooper will finally be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on March 14, 2011 at its 26th yearly induction ceremony.
Alice Cooper began as the lead singer and frontman of the band of the same name with the release of their debut album, Pretties For You, in 1969. Cooper launched his solo career in 1975 with the release of the concept album, Welcome To My Nightmare, an epic recording that was produced by the brilliant Bob Ezrin.
Cooper established himself firmly in the era of shock rock and early glam metal -- his career spanning beyond 30 years, and releasing songs such as School's Out, Poison, Hey Stoopid, and Brutal Planet. He is known for his concept albums, and theatrical live performance that featured the "execution of Alice Cooper" every night -- usually portrayed as death by guillotine. He's left such an...

Over the centuries many great philosophical questions have been posed: Who are we? What is our purpose in life? How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat yer meat?
Well, that last one wasn’t Socrates, it was Pink Floyd on arguably their most famous track, “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2,” off their rock opera album “The Wall.” Alan Parker famously depicted the anti-authoritarian school song in his 1982 film version of the Roger Waters opus, but now it seems a new film built around the song is in the works and, like most superhero movies, it’s an origin tale.
Deadline reports that producer Andy Harries (“The Queen”) wants to make a movie about the chorus of schoolchildren who sang on “Another Brick In the Wall,” the ones who didn’t need no education, who didn’t need no thought control. Described as “‘Dead Poets Society...

Alice Cooper's maintaining a very high profile this year, thanks to the whirlwind "Gruesome Twosome" tour with Rob Zombie, the recent premiere of horror comedy Suck (which featured the Coop and daughter Calico as a pair of vampire barkeeps) and a re-teaming with producer Bob Ezrin to work on new concept album The Night Shift. As if he weren't busy enough, Alice will also apparently be contributing music to Silas Gore – a rock 'n' roll horror film currently in pre-production (and the first in a proposed trilogy). More details after the break... Director Shani Grewal describes Silas Gore as "a rarity among horror movies," a blend of old-school atmospheric creepiness and modern...

"The roots of our music, our culture, had suddenly been wiped out.." When the levees broke in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans was devastated. Among the multitude of victims was the "cultural gumbo" of the city's vital music scene, built up over many decades. The city is "the crucible of music," says U2's The Edge. "Without New Orleans, there'd be no rock 'n' roll."
Music Rising, now available for free online viewing courtesy of our friends at SnagFilms, documents the efforts of musicians to help their fellow artists to continue playing and performing -- and to encourage musicians who had been forced to leave the city to come home. The film begins on a somber note, as the devastation is recapped. One musician sadly surveys the ruins of his home before leaving town, declaring that he will never return; he is emblematic of the many departed musicians.
