While it is Diana Prince’s sacred duty to defend the world, it has now become Wonder Woman’s duty to protect the future of DC Comics and the superhero genre in general. That’s thanks to the film’s solid 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, positive reviews and $100.5 million in opening weekend ticket sales. It should come as no surprise that a sequel is already being discussed.
Today’s Wonder Woman is more than a simple sex symbol, thrown into other superheroes’ movies to run down the beach Baywatch-style, provide an impressive spin and plucky attitude and rock a flashy cape and boots. Thanks to this new installment, she now represents something else entirely.

Wonder Woman is the first female-driven superhero movie to hit multiplexes since 2004's disastrous Catwoman – and in between these two comic-book–cinema poles, there's been a glut of films with masked and/or caped dudes fighting injustice and taking on imposing foes. But what's remarkable about this blockbuster (opening-weekend box office haul: $100.5 million domestic, $223 million globally) is that it may be the first comic-book film in which the obstacles aren't solely demigods, diabolical villains or a dark, tragic backstory but, rather, a society predisposed to hold back women. And while the new movie,...

So many handsome, ripped men in Hollywood named Chris, so little time.

Elle Magazine recently sat down with Chris Evans and discussed a number of topics. From politics, sports, and dating, the interview covered the gamut of information you would expect. (It also includes a shirtless photo of Mr. Evans with whip cream on his chest. Sometimes there's not enough a person can do to forget an image.) One tidbit of information the interview gave was his comments on a potential Black Widow movie.
"That's a good question. It would really just clean up, wouldn't it? Scarlett [Johansson] is so good at everything she does. She's played such a crucial part in the other films. She always makes her presence so felt—even when there are 50 different superheroes running around onscreen. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens at some point in the future. I'm sure Scarlett would be open to it."

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
Iconic, textured, and scarred beneath the surface, Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Logan puts the “human” in “superhuman.” In honor of his recent farewell as the man formerly known as Wolverine, we’ve asked our panel of critics to name the best performance in the history of superhero movies.

My head tells me the correct answer is probably something like Heath Ledger’s swan song as “The Dark Knight”‘s rabid Joker or Michelle Pfeiffer as the kinked-up Catwoman in “Batman Returns.” But my heart’s in a cage — Nic Cage, to be specific. I recently revisited the...

Thanks to Movie Hotties, we have a video which breaks down the actresses they consider to be 2016's hottest movie stars. It should hardly surprise you to learn that the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Munn, Morena Baccarin and even Jessica Alba dominate the list, but which of them comes out on top? That would be Suicide Squad's Margot Robbie. It's been a breakout year for the Australian actress, and after taking on the role of Harley Quinn in that movie, she'll next take the lead in Gotham City Sirens. That movie will see the character apparently working alongside villains Catwoman and Poison Ivy. Of course, let's not forget about the guys! 2016 also saw the likes of Chris Evans, Ben Affleck, Chadwick Boseman, and Will Smith impress, but there's currently not a video putting the spotlight on them. So, for now, check out the rundown below and be sure...

On Tuesday, December 27, Carrie Fisher passed away at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack.
The actress, who immortalized the role of Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” franchise, had gone into cardiac arrest four days earlier when she was flying from London to Los Angeles. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was being treated and later died.
Her tragic and sudden health issues shocked Fisher’s “Star Wars” co-stars and devoted fans, who took to Twitter to send prayers and messages of hope. Though days later, upon hearing the news of her death, the entertainment world and celebrities expressed their heartbreak on social media.

Across the 13 movies released under its banner so far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured some of the crème de la crème of Hollywood acting talent. Apart from the lead actors who it has made into stars – Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt spring to mind – it has also managed to coax a lot of very big names into roles of various sizes and importance.
Unfortunately, while it is great to see these familiar faces turning up in superhero movies, often they are portraying characters who demand a lot less of them than we are used to. A lot of Marvel’s villains alone have been played by some great actors in less than fulfilling roles, including Jeff Bridges, Mickey Rourke and Hugo Weaving.

Marvel fandom already has a very high opinion of Chris Evans from his work on their superhero films, being open about his anxiety, to charity work and behind-the-scenes friendships. Now the actor has gone and shared an adorable letter from the very beginnings of his budding career. "Wow. My dad found the letter I sent to Dozens of casting directors during my junior year. Hilarious. #bestsummerever" the Boston native wrote on Twitter earlier today. Wow. My dad found the letter I sent to Dozens of casting directors during my junior year. My name is Christopher Evans and I am a high school junior with an intense passion for theatre.

The Golden Globes have officially wrapped - with plenty of entertaining moments taking place during the broadcast. But a lot of the fun happened when the cameras weren't rolling. Here are some of the candid moments People witnessed from inside the ceremony. Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer made quite the impression with their joint presentation - and further proved their Bff status during commercial break as they hugged on stage for a long time after the lights went down at the end of their speech. The Lawrence love fest continued later, with the actress gushing over Downton Abbey's, Joanne Froggatt,...

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.

Johnny Depp may have stored up lots of moviegoing goodwill thanks to his iconic work as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, but that sentiment didn't translate into box office dollars in 2015: Depp's inability to earn much money at the multiplex this year has earned him the dubious title of Hollywood's most overpaid actor.
Forbes put out its annual list of overpaid performers this week, and Depp's 2015 numbers are especially dismal (yes, even for the star of notorious flop "The Lone Ranger"): According to the magazine, Depp made only $1.20 for every $1 he was paid for films including "Mortdecai" and "Transcendence," which earned just $47 million and $100 million, respectively. (For comparison, Chris Evans returned $181.80 for every dollar he took home in 2015, making him Hollywood's best bargain, according to Forbes.)

Over the last week, it looked like the Lynchian fever dream of a Gambit film might not come to pass, with star (and producer) Channing Tatum apparently on the brink of exiting the X-Men spinoff.
It turns out Tatum is still on board, but the incident got us thinking of some other superhero castings that nearly were but never will be:
(Nb Please take it as read that Jude Law was considered for all of these roles.)

Hugh Jackman has become so synonymous with the iconic X-Man that it's strange to think of anyone else taking on the role (even if they inevitably will). But before he had been cast, Russell Crowe was considered to play the angry Canadian mutant, and is credited with directing Bryan Singer's attention towards his fellow Aussie.
A-list hopeful Dougray Scott came even closer, and was actually cast in the role before shooting on Mission: Impossible 2 overran,...

Chris Pratt is the box office king right now, but he's still Johnny Karate at heart. What's old just might be new again for Chris Evans and Minka Kelly. On Tuesday, the former couple spent their afternoon in La together, hopping into Chris's car to make a quick stop at Hugo's Tacos. While Chris sat in the vehicle, Minka ran in to pick up their order. The spot holds a special significance for the duo, since they shared Pda at the taco stand back in October 2012 shortly after rekindling their romance, which first ended in 2007. In their second chapter together, Minka and Chris kept their relationship out of the spotlight, enjoying casual outings such as a sushi date and sweet drive. It didn't take long for the couple to hit the brakes again, though - Minka and Chris reportedly called it off again in October 2013.

Whatever your feelings about Frank Miller are, his influence over comics cannot be denied. Only Alan Moore's work in the '80s can be compared in terms of the effect it would have on superheroes - in comics, films and the public eye - over the intervening decades.
With the release of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - his second collaboration with Robert Rodriguez adapting his noir comic of the same name - Miller is back in the public eye, talking about his love of Superman and Batman and generally upsetting everyone.
To mark the occasion, we look back at the highs and lows of Frank Miller's career.

As a kid growing up in the late 80s/early 90s in a small town in Lancashire there weren’t many places to buy the comics I so adored. I had to rely on the book stall in the local market to pick up the comics I wanted to read – and those that just caught my eye. Back I had three staple titles I would collect: Justice League International, New Warriors and Guardians of the Galaxy. However these cinematic Guardians aren’t my Guardians of the Galaxy…
Back then it was the adventures of Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Starhawk and a certain Yondu Udonta, who would travel the galaxy battling the Badoon.

When it comes to films, especially action-packed Hollywood blockbusters, many of us don’t really mind if every little detail is not correct, as long as we leave being satisfied and entertained by what we have just witnessed. For some however, this is not the case. Many Marvel comic books fans get upset and annoyed by the changes that are made to their favourite superhero character when they take to the silver screen. With a whole host of Marvel-themed games on site, Gala Casino have investigated some of the major differences that these die-hard comic book fans are talking about…

My geek overdrive continues to overwhelm me. But I’m not the only one.
Less than a week away from this year’s San Diego ComicCon (which opens its doors this Thursday, July 24th, and closes them on Sunday, July 27th) Entertainment Weekly joins the national geek fest that is summertime with a bang-up double-size issue featuring a cover shot of Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Evans as Captain America with Ultron looming behind them. The issue is a stuffed-to-the-gills San Diego Comic Con preview…
And I read every single page. Including the adverts.
Now I know how those fans at the 1976 Sdcc felt when Charles Lippincott (then head of Lucasfilm’s marketing, advertising and publicity department) showed some of the first production slides of Star Wars, and (writer) Roy Thomas and (artist) Howard Chaykin previewed their Marvel Comics adaptation of the film, because the cover story,...

There are a lot of "what ifs" in the movie business. There are so many options when it comes to casting actors to play characters in movies. Superhero films are huge right now, and I love most of the actors that studios have cast to play these badass characters. Christian Bale as Batman, Andrew Garfield aa Spider-Man, Henry Cavill as Superman, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man are just a few of many. But these characters could have easily been played by other actors. It's hard to imagine that now since we're already invested in what's in front of our eyes.
I've come up with a list of actors who almost played some of these superheroes. You may already know about some of the close calls on the list, you may not, but when I was researching for this article there were a few things I didn't know before,...

The sad passing of actress Alexandra Bastedo earlier this month saw many recalling and celebrating her work on '60s spy-fi series The Champions - just one entry in the canon of cult programme makers Itc Entertainment.
Though it also branched out into film production - with the likes of 1976's The Eagle Has Landed and 1982's The Dark Crystal - Itc was best known throughout the 1960s and '70s for its raft of cult TV programming, with shows like The Champions making an indelible screen icon of Bastedo and others like her.
These shows are now world-renowned - The Saint, The Prisoner, Thunderbirds - but the team behind them still go sadly unsung.
This week, the Week in Geek is looking to redress the balance with a fond tribute to Itc Entertainment - one of the UK's very best, most influential production teams.

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Ramon Novarro in one of the best silent movies: ‘The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg’ (photo: Ramon Novarro leapfrog) (See previous post: "Ramon Novarro Ben-Hur: First Big-Budget Hollywood Movie Saved by the International Market.") Ben-Hur also solidified Ramon Novarro’s international superstardom. In fact, moviegoers outside North America helped to keep Novarro working steadily at MGM up to the mid-’30s, several years after his domestic popularity had markedly diminished — and several years after fellow male silent era stars John Gilbert and William Haines had been gone from the studio. With the passing of the decades, especially since the release of William Wyler’s multiple Oscar-winning 1959 version of Ben-Hur, starring Charlton Heston, Ramon Novarro’s 1925 movie fell into oblivion. The following is from Beyond Paradise: The Life of Ramon Novarro: As the years passed, Ben-Hur, the motion picture that would “remain, as the Bible remains” became but...

Ariel Vromen's Scorsese-style hitman drama keeps a tough grip on your attention, but fails to make its protagonist interesting, let alone sympathetic
"Goodfellas meets Zodiac" was how I described this movie on the festival circuit last year: the true-life story of Richie Kuklinski, a mob hitman and compulsive killer who whacked about a hundred people over 40 years, getting paid for something he probably would have been doing anyway. Having watched this again for its UK release, I have to say the Goodfellas part of Ariel Vromen's movie is far more prominent, and its borrowings from Scorsese more obvious.
Michael Shannon puts in a solid, unsmiling performance as Kuklinski, a guy who runs a porn distribution business, kept secret from his respectable wife, Deborah (Winona Ryder). But then he is recruited as a chillingly calm assassin by local mobster Roy Demeo (Ray Liotta), whom he later enrages by going...

I remember the first year I was really invested in the outcome of the Academy Awards. I was 7 or 8, and Titanic was up for Best Picture. My mom, who taught me everything I know about pop culture, was in serious fangirl mode over the whole thing — she had a Heart of the Ocean replica necklace, we had a 3-D puzzle of the ship itself, and she had let me watch the movie on VHS with her, fast forwarding through the naughty scenes.
But I also had a strict bedtime.
At 8 p.m. (very strict), I was told it was time for me to retire.

Hollywood is still responding to the death of actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who died over the weekend at the age of 54. Michael Bay, who cast the actor in his breakout role in Armageddon, wrote about meeting Duncan. "We found him in a gym. He cried at the first audition because he was so proud to audition for a 'Michael and Jerry movie,' he just wanted to make his mom proud. We gave him the role in the room." Tom Hanks, who starred alongside Duncan in his Oscar-nominated performance in The Green Mile released a statement. "I am terribly saddened at the loss of Big Mike," Hanks said. "He was the treasure we all discovered on the set of The Green Mile. He was magic. He was a big love of man and his passing leaves us stunned." Duncan suffered a heart attack in July and according to reports "never fully recovered.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.
