Exclusive: Betsy Brandt is set to executive produce and star in the newly greenlit Lifetime movie The Bad Orphan. Chloe Coco Chapman will make her television debut alongside Brandt and additional cast members Mark Taylor (Reacher) and Eve Edwards (The Good Doctor).
From writer Doris Egan, the psychological drama centers on Jessica (Brandt) and Karl (Taylor), loving parents to Rhiannon (Edwards), who after years of trying to add to their family are elated to adopt Gabby (Chapman), an 8-year-old orphan born with personal challenges. Their ideas of a perfect family come into question when they discover that Gabby is a troubled little girl, and the family begins to believe things aren’t what they seem.
As the unsettling behavior of their “child” worsens and lies are uncovered, cracks in the family dynamic form with Jessica increasingly becoming concerned that adopted daughter Gabby is a threat to their family.

The Good Doctor this week carefully peeled back the layers of Morgan’s hardened exterior (though not too much) to reveal a woman who so desperately wanted her mother’s approval.
While Shaun was focused on giving Carly a “parade,” Morgan was hard at work, determined to save the life of her difficult-to-please parent: famed painter Caroline Reznick (Smallville‘s Annette O’Toole), who was admitted to St. Bonaventure with potentially fatal clusters of small blood vessels in the brain. Mary and Catherine, the favorite head-clashing duo is out of the castle and into the woods on this week's Reign episode "Three Queens." After a carriage attack, the pair escape and are forced into servitude in exchange for food, where they pretend to be mother and daughter. How ironic.
Executive Producers Doris Egan and Laurie McCarthy sound off explaining that the idea for this episode comes from a more fun-loving place: "It's just been so dark and tense and it's just so hard to, you know, be Mary...and it's time for them to have some fun." Well said. We're more than ready for some screen time with this pair.

Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 5 – “V.”
Written by Doris Egan
Directed by Marc Munden
Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz
Much of Black Sails‘ first season has been methodical character-building, and while “V.” doesn’t let up on putting effort into constructing these people and their lives, its centerpiece is something the season has been needing since its opening moments – a battle on the open seas. This is a series about pirates, after all, and the payoff for waiting for a sequence like this is surprisingly effective. Just on the technical level, this is something that a lot of viewers will have been waiting to see. The strategy that Flint executes to get his ship in position to board another is the kind of risk-reward move that fits with the captain, who is constantly in danger of losing everything. Using a pirate prototype of a sniper, the crew weathers a...

Exclusive: Writer-producer Doris Egan (House) has signed a two-year overall deal with CBS TV Studios. Under the pact, she will join the studio’s high-profile new CW drama Reign as co-executive producer. Created by Laurie McCarthy and Stephanie SenGupta, Reign, a soapy reimagining of the teenage years of Mary Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane) in the French Court, is one of the buzziest new CW series and landed the coveted post-Vampire Diaries slot on the fall schedule. On Reign, Egan will work with McCarthy as SenGupta departed the project last week. Egan, repped by Wme and Rain Management Group, was co-executive producer of House for six years. She most recently was co-exec producer on Starz’s upcoming pirate drama Black Sails, from producer Michael Bay, and also developed/co-wrote a Frankenstein series with Laeta Kalogridis at the premium net.

Just a few updates today, but they're fun.
Grimm premiered to surprisingly strong ratings last night (6.5 million viewers, 2.1 million in the 18-49 demo), or as NBC puts it in the press release, the "largest non-sports 18-49 audience on the night by any network since last year's "New Year's Rockin' Eve" on ABC (2.8 rating)."
What makes this news particularly great is that the show aired opposite the most watched baseball game in the last seven years, and after one of the lowest rated episodes of Chuck ever (the show hit a series low in the key demo, according to TV by the Numbers).
NBC is re-airing the Grimm pilot tonight at 9 pm and the episode will also be shown on Syfy this Tuesday at 7 pm.
Here is the synopsis for next Friday's episode, "Bears Will Be Bears:"
A barbaric family history is revealed when Nick and Hank investigate a case of breaking and entering.

Tw: Miracle Day Episode Two
So here we are at Episode Two, "Rendition," written by my dear friend Doris Egan. I worked with Doris on a show called Tru Calling, and was thrilled to get a chance to work with her again. Doris has been writing at House for the last few years and probably thought she'd gotten away from tense last-minute medical solutions. Not so fast!
So are you ready to walk through the ep with me. As always – Spoilers Ahead!
First – tarmac action. And here is the wonderful Dichen Lachman from Dollhouse. And then we get to see Gwen separated from her baby. Russell was very clear that all we would have to do is put Eve Myles in this scene and trust her to fight like a tiger. And clearly, she does.

“Miracle Day – Rendition”
The second episode of the new season of Torchwood slows down a little, but still hands the viewer a lot to digest. Rex, who at the end of episode one had announced that he was extraditing the team to America, is being railroaded by a colleague and former lover, Lyn (played with effective evilness by Dichen Lachman), who is taking over the arrest. Rhys and Anwen are sent back home as Jack and Gwen are loaded on a plane for the states. Most of their time is spent on the flight, but even on a plane, a lot can happen.
Esther is suddenly making unwanted waves as she is trying to get more involved with the Torchwood investigation. Her inquiries and interest are catching the eye of someone that doesn’t want Torchwood to come out of this alive. However, the reasons for that are still a mystery.

With all the extra people, resources are finite. It's said that in four months' time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can't be a natural event – someone's got to be behind it. It's a race against time as CIA. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. In 1987 the horror genre was dominated by the slasher fad of that decade. Zombies were mostly something seen only in Italian gorefests with the name Fulci attached. Ghosts and supernatural films were few and far between. Vampires ... well, vampires had been neutered and reduced to whiny flouncy boys by the likes of Anne Rice.
Seemingly out of nowhere came a film that introduced a young audience to a new, hip breed of bloodsucker in The Lost Boys. These vamps, while retaining the inherent sexiness of Rice’s Louis and Lestat, were, by their actions, a callback to the more vicious creatures made popular by the likes of people like Christopher Lee. The Lost Boys was nothing short of a cultural phenomenon and a film that served as a touchstone for the zeitgeist of the time.

Russell T. Davies is bringing Torchwood to the New World in the series’ fourth season to be carried by Starz. This reboot entitled Torchwood: The New World, will “follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue.” With the original Torchwood team disbanded as it was at the end of the mini-series Torchwood: Children of Earth last summer, the underground alien-fighting force is “like a legend now … it’s like something that’s ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers.” Rex Matheson and Ester will team up with Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) for this fourth season. The roles of Rex and Ester have yet to be cast.
Davies describes the dynamic for the reboot:

Much like "Doctor Who" did a minor reboot of itself earlier this year, its spin-off series "Torchwood" is set to do the same with the upcoming fourth season of the show which premieres on Starz next Summer.
Entitled "Torchwood: The New World", the story follows CIA agent Rex Matheson and an analyst named Esther who are trying to stop an alien menace.
As the setting is after the events of 'Children of Earth', Torchwood itself has long been disbanded and is now a legend talked about only in whispers at the highest echelons.
The threat forces the pair to find out what Torchwood was and seek out the surviving members of the crew. Soon, Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and Gwen (Eve Myles) come together with the new duo to once again save the world.
Like 'Children', the ten-episode season will be a single story arc, and the threat itself...

The Chicago Tribute reports that John Shiban, Doris Egan, Jane Espenson and John Fay will all write episodes for the show's upcoming fourth series. Captain Jack may have lost the majority of his crew but Starz is bringing on one heck of a replacement team - of writers, that is. Russell T. Davies and Starz previously announced that Series 4 will tell one international story spanning over ten episodes, as opposed to free-standing weekly installments. Now, The Chicago Tribune is reporting the addition of several excellent writers to his team: John Shiban (Breaking Bad, X-Files, Supernatural), Doris Egan (House, Tru Calling, Numb3rs) Jane Espenson (Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and John Fay (Torchwood).
And speaking of Buffy, James Marsters is anxious to return as Harkness' former lover and fellow time traveler, Captain John Hart. Speaking about Davies, Marsters says, "If he doesn't call me, then I am going to find him. I will tickle him until he bleeds."
I think I'll keep something like that in mind if Series 4 is less than fraktastic.

Sci-Fi TV-writing vets Jane Espenson and Doris Egan will be penning the fourth season of Torchwood.
Doris Egan (Tru Calling, Dark Angel, Smallville) and Jane Espenson (Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Dollhouse, Caprica and others) are currently hard at work on the new season of the show, which will be a serialized and debut in the summer of 2011 on Starz.
For Season 4, hottie John Barrowman will return as Captain Jack Harkness, Eve Myles will be back as Gwen Cooper and casting is underway for several new characters. Filming on the Starz-bbc co-production will begin in January 2011, and though some of it will be shot in the U.K., a substantial part of the new Torchwood season will be filmed in North America.

Creator/producer Russell T Davies has started serious work on fourth season of Torchwood. Right now, that means doing his writing bit – and gathering the other writers for the 10-episode season. His team lacks nothing in heroic fantasy street cred.
According to the Chicago Tribune’s Maureen Ryan, joining Davies and returning Torchwood writer John Fay will be John Shiban (Breaking Bad, Supernatural, The X-Files), Jane Espenson (Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy), and friend of ComicMix Doris Egan (House, Smallville, Tru Calling, Dark Angel). That’s one hell of a writing staff.
Despite the presence of five writers, the season is expected to be tightly woven together, more along the lines of the third season’s Children of Earth five-parter than the first two seasons, which featured single-episode dramas.
Once Davies has fleshed out the new characters, filming will begin in North America around the first of the year.

The forthcoming season of Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood is going to have an interesting mix of writers, Chicago Tribune reports.
(Russell T.) Davies, who created the Doctor Who spinoff, will of course write several episodes of the 10-part series, but other writers for Season 4 include John Shiban (Breaking Bad, Supernatural, The X-Files), Doris Egan (House, Tru Calling, Dark Angel), Jane Espenson (Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy) and John Fay (a U.K. Torchwood writer).
Eve Myles and John Barrowman will return as Gwen Cooper and Captain Jack Harkness, along with some new team members--which is good because (spoiler alert if you haven't seen the last couple of seasons--you've been told) all the other characters are dead. Seriously. The coming season is reported to have more of an international scope--which is fine since Cardiff-based stories are getting a little old. The new characters are reported to include American characters, which...

Season 4 of racy British sci-fi series "Torchwood" looks to be more Americanized than originally thought. Following the BBC's deal to co-produce the 2011 return with U.S. cable network Starz, creator Russell T. Davies is now working with several American TV writers to help script the 10-episode order.
The Chicago Tribune reports that three new writers come from the U.S. and each has an impressive sci-fi pedigree. Doris Egan ("House," "Tru Calling"), Jane Espenson ("Battlestar Galactica," "Buffy," "Caprica") and John Shiban ("Breaking Bad," "Supernatural," "The X-Files") will all write episodes in the coming season, in addition to Davies and "Torchwood" alum John Fay.
And these won't be stand-alone episodes like those from the series' first two seasons. Davies maintains that Season 4 will follow the formula of plot-focused "Torchwood" miniseries "Children of Earth."
As previously reported, the new, bigger-budget "Torchwood" will also film in North America, filling out its whittled-down cast...

Good news for Torchwood fans: pre-production on the fourth season of Torchwood seems to be moving apace, with production set for January in the United Kingdom and North America. Overseen by Russell T Davies, Season Four of Torchwood--will will be titled Torchwood: The New World, according to publicity reports I've seen--has shored up its writing staff for the series, which is set to kick off next summer on Starz and BBC One. According to The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan, Davies will write several episodes out of the ten-installment season and has hired some noteworthy scribes to join him in the hub, including Caprica's Jane Espenson (who is also contributing a script to HBO's Game of Thrones), John Shiban (Breaking Bad), Doris Egan (House), and original-flavor Torchwood's John Fay. The new season of Torchwood, if you couldn't tell from the subtitle, will have more of an international feel than the previous seasons,...

Doris Egan, former producer on Smallville and current producer on House, sums up why fans care about continuity:
I’ve never forgotten when I was a kid, watching a show called It Takes a Thief. Throughout the series, the hero would say, “I’m a thief, like my father and my grandfather before me.” Then suddenly there was an episode where a woman asked him why he became a thief, and he told a story about having been a geologist and getting into thievery almost accidentally. And this wasn’t presented as a lie. You can tell the difference; even as a kid, I could tell the difference. They expected you to accept this – for this episode. A few episodes later we’d go back to the previous story.
I’ll never forget how betrayed I felt, because I loved that series with a love only a pre-teen can feel.
