Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.
Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”
Young’s temperamental, jealous but nonetheless loyal and caring Paulie Pennino was Rocky’s best friend — he would defend the Italian Stallion if someone insulted him. But he was a problematic friend who shouts at Adrian during her pregnancy,...

UK-based company is aiming to ”move faster and come onto projects even earlier”.
Dave Bishop has been CEO of London-based sales, production and financing agency Protagonist Pictures for five years but Cannes 2022 is just his third time on the Croisette in the top role. Two years of the Covid-19 pandemic have kept Bishop mostly in the UK and reliant on Zoom.
The squeeze on talent has been a particular test. “We’ve spent a lot of time building relationships with [US] agents, managers and financiers,” says Bishop. “What’s been frustrating over the past couple of years is not being able to travel to the US.

In a further expansive move, London-based Protagonist Pictures is teaming with Madrid’s Mogambo, executive producers on “1917,” for a multi-year, multi-title strategic financing and production partnership.

They added in a statement that the partnership will focus on jointly green-lighting prestige third party filmmaker-driven titles with budget ranges of 5 million-25 million, as well as strategic co-productions and development.

Nearly two decades after scoring an audience award at Sundance for “Two Family House,” a smartly understated yet deeply affecting indie about a Staten Island factory worker who deeply regrets stifling his showbiz ambitions, director Raymond De Felitta steps back up to the plate with “Bottom of the 9th,” another dramatically solid and emotionally satisfying drama that pivots on a long-shot attempt to fulfill long-delayed dreams.
De Felitta — whose resume also includes “City Island,” “Rob the Mob” and the 2016 TV miniseries “Madoff” — takes an admirably restrained approach to a familiar scenario that could have come off as sappy in the wrong hands. At the same time, however, he allows his most valuable players, led by Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara, more than enough freedom to make vivid and compelling impressions within the lines he has drawn.

"It's going to take a while for people to get used to you being back." Saban Films has revealed the official trailer for an indie crime / sports drama titled Bottom of the 9th, based on the true story of a man named Bobby Stano. A tragic mistake lands 19 year old baseball phenom Stano, played by Joe Manganiello, in jail before his burgeoning professional baseball career gets off the ground. Now age 39 and fresh out of prison he works to win back his respect, his family, his lost love, and just maybe continue his dream of becoming a professional baseball player. Also starring Sofía Vergara, Burt Young, Denis O'Hare, James Madio, Michael Rispoli, Yancey Arias, and Vincent Pastore. This looks pretty basic, another former inmate redemption story mixed with a older-player baseball film. Might intrigue a few people, mainly baseball fans. Here's the first official trailer for Raymond De Felitta's Bottom of the 9th,...

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to “Bottom of the 9th,” an upcoming drama that stars Joe Manganiello and Sofía Vergara. It marks the joint acting debut for the real-life couple.
“Bottom of the 9th” is the story of a man who returns to the Bronx following a 17-year stint in prison for a violent mistake he made as a young man. His imprisonment deprived him of a professional baseball career, and ruined his relationship with the love of his life. The film is slated for a theatrical bow on July 19.
“Bottom of the 9th” is from director, screenwriter, author and musician Raymond De Felitta, the filmmaker behind “City Island” and “Madoff.” The film was written by Robert Bruzio and was formerly titled “Stano.” Manganiello is best-known for his work in “True Blood” and “Magic Mike.” Vergara stars in “Modern Family” and previously appeared in “Hot Pursuit” and “Chef.

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

It’s rare that I find myself questioning the judgement of Martin Scorsese, but after having seen The Wannabe, which he co-executive produced with Dean Devlin, it’s inevitable, even if it is short-lived. Directed by Nick Sandow, the film tells the story of Tom & Rose, an ambitious couple, but not well endowed with common sense or street smarts. The film is based upon real-life events that occurred around the trial of mafia boss John Gotti, an unusual case of celebrity obsession, if you will.
The Wannabe, as silly as the title sounds, is just that. It’s the story of a social outcast who dreams of being a big-shot gangster and tried very hard in his own, pathetic way, to make those dreams a reality, when all it really accomplishes is chaos, death and destruction. On it’s own, this is a fairly generic, albeit not poorly made movie of average entertainment value.

Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt': Alfred Hitchcock heroine (image: Joseph Cotten about to strangle Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt') (See preceding article: "Teresa Wright Movies: Actress Made Oscar History.") After scoring with The Little Foxes, Mrs. Miniver, and The Pride of the Yankees, Teresa Wright was loaned to Universal – once initial choices Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland became unavailable – to play the small-town heroine in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt. One of the better films from the first half of this year was definitely Raymond de Felitta’s crime caper Rob the Mob, which charted the rise and fall of Tommy and Rosemarie Uva (played excellently by Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda), a real Queens couple who brazenly stuck up New York clubs habited by big-time mobsters as part of an unlikely crime spree. In my four-star review, I wrote:
Thanks to stellar performances from Pitt and Arianda, Rob the Mob works as both a deceptively complex mafia epic and as a wildly entertaining, Bonnie and Clyde-esque romance.
Part crime drama, part relationship comedy, Rob the Mob was one of those movies that really shouldn’t have worked but did so spectacularly. And as it heads to Blu-Ray and DVD this week courtesy of Millenium Entertainment, We Got This Covered is thrilled to debut an exclusive deleted scene from the film.

There are many ways a person can commit suicide, quick and easy or long and slow, but the end result is all the same. One way, for example, would be to deliberately do something to royally piss off the mafia. Yes, that would just about guarantee your own demise. With this in mind, let’s talk about a film, based on a true story…
By its title, Rob The Mob does sound like it should be a comedy about the mafia. In fact, it is actually a very funny film. I’d even say it holds its own against My Cousin Vinny (1992). As appealing as that is on the surface, it gets better. Not only is this a funny, entertaining movie, but it’s also based on a true story. The events in this film, or at least parts of it, actually happened… in real life!

Title: Rob The Mob Director: Raymond De Felitta Starring: Michael Pitt, Nina Arianda, Andy Garcia, Ray Romano. ‘Rob the Mob’ portrays the Bonnie & Clyde of the 90s, the contemporary Robin Hood couple who stole from the Mafia to give to the poor…with the love-dove-thieves alone being the poor in question. The American crime drama, is set in New York City in 1991, where small-time crooks Tommy (Michael Pitt) and Rosie (Nina Arianda) – who are madly and passionately in love with one another – specialise in robbing mafia social clubs. As they go deeper down the rabbit hole, they stumble upon a score bigger than they could ever imagine, [ Read More ]

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. That’s certainly the case in Rob the Mob, Raymond De Felitta’s jaunty, disarmingly human crime caper about Tommy and Rosemarie Uva, a real Queens couple who brazenly stuck up social clubs habited by members of two major New York crime families, and got away with it – until they didn’t.
When we first meet Tommy and Rosie, they’re embarking on an ill-advised robbery, one which will land Tommy in prison for 18 months. Immediately, the motivations behind their life of crime are clear; of course, the financial incentive is there, but there’s a heated romantic spark driving their activities forward as well. So crazy in love that they feel invincible, the two lovebirds instinctively feel that the world is theirs for the taking.
Once Tommy’s out, it’s not long before the two are scheming again, despite Rosie’s...

Miami - We've so often seen Andy Garcia performing in an Italian-American gangster guise – from “The Untouchables” to “Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead” to, of course, his Oscar-nominated breakout role in “The Godfather Part III” – that it's easy to forget the Havana-born actor's Cuban heritage. Or perhaps not so easy in Miami, Garcia's hometown from the age of five. Back in town for the Miami Film Festival premiere of his new film “Rob the Mob,” Garcia is greeted with a collective roar of affection by the local crowd packing out the city's spectacular Gusman Theater; earlier that day, when we meet for a chat in the Standard Hotel restaurant, he has the breezy assurance of a man who knows his way around. His old high school, he points out, is a short distance down the street, while a number of his films have played the festival...

It feels like we haven't had a good mob movie in a long time. We're talking real Italian-style paisanos; tracksuits, wife-beaters, food metaphors, and grease everywhere. Raymond De Felitta may have been feeling the same kind of nostalgia in the air, because his new movie "Rob The Mob" plays out like a hundred dollar tip to the genre. Recent films that dealt with organized crime range from Academy Award nominees and winners ("American Hustle," "The Departed") to the wrongfully ignored ("Lawless," "Killing Them Softly") or ones that somehow went terribly off the rails ("Gangster Squad"); but none of those dealt with the mafia as we know it from the '90s classics like "Goodfellas," HBO's "The Sopranos" or "Donnie Brasco." Well, De Felitta takes a true story that occurred in the early '90s, adds two energized leads, a pinch of bearded Andy Garcia and a screenplay that goes down...

For a few months in 1992, Thomas and Rosemarie Uva struck a combination of disbelief, annoyance, and even a little terror in the hearts of New York’s underworld as they held up a series of social clubs belonging to the Gambino and Bonnano crime families. She’d wait in the car, while he ran in with an Uzi and robbed and humiliated the wiseguys inside, reportedly messing with his victims’ hair and making them drop their pants. In the grand scheme of mafia-related atrocities, Tommy and Rosemarie’s antics were relatively minor, but they make an ideal subject for director Raymond De Felitta, who likes modest tales told in miniature, life-size stories that betray deeper, bigger issues at play. Rob the Mob is his version of a mafia epic crossed with a lovers-on-the-run movie — a romance about two down-and-outers that reveals the workings of a whole citywide ecosystem of crime...

A few days ago we had a chance to sit down with Andy Garcia, Ray Romano, and director Raymond de Felitta to talk about their upcoming flim “Rob the Mob.”
The film is set up in New York City, 1991. Small-time crooks Tommy (Pitt) and Rosie (Arianda) have two things in common: a crazy-passionate love for one another and—after they’re caught robbing a florist on Valentine’s Day—prison records. Trying to go straight, Rosie lands a job at a debt-collection agency and persuades Tommy to join her. But soon Tommy is skipping his shifts to do something much more interesting—attend the landmark trial of Mafia hit man Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, whose graphic testimony could finally bring down flamboyant Gambino-family boss John Gotti.
Tommy’s fascination with the mob is deeply personal; when he was a boy, he saw his father suffer a brutal beating beat at the hands of local gangsters.

When it comes to New York City filmmakers, you have your Woody Allens and your Spike Lees and Martin Scorseses, but in recent years, a new breed of filmmakers has emerged trying to tell some of the other 8 million stories set in the city. Granted, filmmaker Raymond De Felitta is not exactly a young new face, having made his first short back in 1990, but with his last movie City Island and his most recent one, Rob the Mob , he has painted two very specific portraits of New York City and its people that makes him a filmmaker that really understands how to translate that onto the big screen. Rob the Mob stars Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda as young married couple Tommy and Marie Uva, who after being released from prison on two-bit crimes get the idea to use the crime family's...

Love between equals is a gangland rarity. Tony Soprano, Michael Corleone and Henry Hill never sought partners, but instead women whose curiosity they could buy off with diamonds, furs and a McMansion. That makes Tommy Uva (Michael Pitt) a different kind of goon. Like the Mafiosi he grew up around, he could use a few years on a psychiatrist's couch to get over his daddy issues. But Tommy's life doesn't revolve around his father, but rather his girlfriend Rosie (Nina Arianda), and their brief, dizzying, deeply stupid crime spree. “Rob the Mob” is director Raymond De Felitta's love letter to Thomas and.

Rob the Mob is a tragicomic take on two of the dumbest real-life stick-up artists in American history, the sort of dopes you might see loudly caricatured in a five-minute segment on Spike TV.
Director Raymond De Felitta and writer Jonathan Fernandez attempt to flesh out this microscopic blip of mafia history, and they half-succeed, mostly due to their spot-on feel for early '90s-era New York City (subway cars scrawled with graffiti, crack pipe use in broad daylight) and the nicely subdued performances from Andy Garcia (as a retiring don) and Ray Romano (as an oddly principled Daily News reporter).
What they fail at is generating pathos. While De Felitta and Fernandez don't condescend to their central couple, snidely dubbed "Bonnie and Clyde" by the press,...

The New York-based, New York-centric Raymond De Felitta has been the Jean Renoir of the outer-boroughs since the tender “Two-Family House” (2000) made a star-crossed Shangri-La out of Staten Island. (His debut short, “Bronx Cheers” and the popular family drama/comedy “City Island” 2009 were set in the Bronx.) His latest “Rob the Mob,” which arrives in NY theaters Friday (March 28 in La), is situated largely in Queens, but is a radical change of pace for the director in terms of both style and subject. And it offers the best time to be had at the movies thus far this year.A caper flick-cum-love-story-cum-road movie -- even if all the roads seem to be Northern Boulevard or Jamaica Avenue -- “Rtm” is based on the crime spree, or the Is-It-Really-a-Crime? spree, committed by a pair of young lovers who robbed Mafia social clubs in the early ‘90s. In the process, they inadvertently...

On the surface, Rob The Mob looks like just another True Romance clone, with its star crossed lovers dodging bullets and getting into trouble. The only difference here is that this film is based on a true story. And not just any true story, a rather unbelievable one.
Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda play Tom and Rosie, a couple of ex-cons from Queens, New York who just got out of jail after serving time for robbing a flower shop on Valentine’s Day. They are both determined to go straight and to do so, end up working at a debt collection agency. It doesn’t take long for Tom to find himself bored sitting in a cubicle and talking on the phone all day and he soon skips work to find other forms of entertainment. Dog Eat Dog: De Felitta’s Entertaining Take of a Take
After the success of his 2009 indie feature, City Island, Raymond De Felitta turns to a scrappy ‘based on a true story’ vehicle with Rob the Mob, a film that manages to override predispositions and assume an energetic momentum that is both rewarding and engaging. An interestingly varied cast, populated by a several faces instantly recognizable from either “The Sopranos” or various Martin Scorsese films, provides the film with immediate likeability, an entertaining mix of mafia history and character study.

Well, I said in my review that the high-tension Brazilian kidnap thriller "A Wolf at the Door" was highly impressive stuff, and it seems the jury at the Miami Film Festival agreed. Not only did Fernando Coimbras' debut feature take the top prize at last night's festival awards ceremony, beating nine other films in the Knight Competition for Spanish and Latin American narrative cinema, but Coimbras was further rewarded with the Best Director award. That the jury -- led by Spanish producer Enrique Lopez Lavigne, whose credits include "The Impossible" -- chose to doubly honor Coimbras in this fashion marks a serious show of faith in a filmmaker whose snappy arthouse-genre chops have serious crossover potential. ("A Wolf at the Door" also won the Latin Horizons section last year at the San Sebastian fest, where it premiered; Brazil has a formidable candidate for Oscar submission here.) It's not as if...

Michael Pitt, sitcom star Ray Romano, Andy Garcia, Broadway sensation Nina Arianda....wait, what? Yeah, the cast for "Rob The Mob" is a bit all over the place, and even the title is a bit too cutesy but you have to admit, the trailer for this looks far more interesting, particularly as it keeps going, more than you would have previously thought possible. Set in 1992, but weirdly boasting costume and set designs that seem more 1970s, the is a based on a true story tale of a young Queens couple who robbed a series of mafia social clubs and got away with it before being targeted by both the mob and the FBI. Admittedly, director Raymond De Felitta ("City Island") isn't putting too high a bar on the proceedings, aiming for a loose, breezy vibe, so it works on that pretty modest level we suppose. Some familiar mobster faces like Andy Garcia and Michael Rispoli pop up, and Ray Romano is also here, maybe trying to shake his TV sitcom image for better or worse. Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.
