Exclusive: After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise at Netflix, director Sam Hargrave has his eyes set on another potential franchise with a piece of IP that is revving its engines to get out the gate. Sources tell Deadline that Skydance and Mattel Films have closed a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action movie based on Matchbox, Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project will be shepherded by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

The original Spider-Man films could’ve changed the career of one Yellowstone star but he chose to turn down the offer. Tobey Maguire’s Spidey role was reportedly first offered to Wes Bentley, who now plays the despicable Jamie Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama. Wes Bentley opened up about his Yellowstone role and the role that he missed out on
Before he turned down the Spider-Man role, Bentley became a promising young star with his role as Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. Bentley went on to star in other movies like The Hunger Games, Interstellar, and Mission: Impossible 6.

Terrence Howard, best known for his roles in popular flicks such as Iron Man and Hustle & Flow, recently spoke out about his alleged mistreatment and underpayment in Hollywood. However, it appears that many viewers were distracted by something else.
This time, it is not because of his acting abilities or charming smile. Well, all the focus was on his hair while he discussed his legal dispute with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA). In an in-depth interview on Straight Talk with Daphne Phaneđ, Howard, 55, talked about his lawsuit and his allegations that he was underpaid while he was a cast member of the Fox series Empire.

It’s been a strange few weeks for Jennifer Lopez. Her recent hybrid drama-musical-self-awareness Prime Video exercise “This Is Me…Now” debuted to mixed critical reviews, and the accompanying album hasn’t necessarily burned up the charts. The good news is that Lopez has a big tentpole Netflix movie arriving on Netflix on Friday, May 24th, to distract from that endeavor, “Atlas.“

Despite there being far too many firsts still left to achieve, Black creators have indelibly left their mark on the television landscape for decades.
Just think of names like Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Lee Daniels (“Empire”), and Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), whose series went on to become credited for reviving network television, or writers like Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), and Lena Waithe (“The Chi”), who have been able to build their own sort of TV empire with the shows they have written and/or produced.
Even networks like BET, Starz, and MTV still run off of the creative ingenuity of executive producers like Tyler Perry (“Sistas”), Courtney A. Kemp (“Power”), Mona Scott-Young (“Love and Hip Hop”), and even RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”).
Often when retelling the story of Black representation on television, there is first acknowledgment of how the writers rooms initially were not reflective of what their casts looked like.

After the recorded phone call, Mo’Nique stated that Perry told singer Stephanie Mills he would only meet with Mo’Nique if her husband, Sidney Hicks, was not present. Perry requested a public apology from Mo’Nique and said that he and Oprah had nothing to do with the downfall of her career.
The drama between Mo’Nique, Perry and Winfrey dates back to 2009.

Mo’Nique praised fellow actress Taraji P. Henson this week for raising awareness about Hollywood’s pay inequality for Black women but also recalled her own attempts to shed light on the issue over a decade ago.
“It was painful to watch,” Mo’Nique told Club Shay Shay host Shannon Sharpe of Henson’s December interview with Gayle King.
“I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost,” a tearful Henson said in an interview that dominated headlines. “I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over.”
Mo’Nique said this week she sympathized with Henson’s words but noted they weren’t unfamiliar. “Taraji and I had a conversation over a decade ago in my trailer when I was doing The Mo’Nique Show.”

Almost two years ago, Netflix paid a reported $65 million for the rights to Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels’ (Precious, The Butler) possession horror movie The Deliverance. This morning we’ve finally learned through Netflix’s “What’s Next” announcement that the buzzy horror title is finally set to make a 2024 debut.
About The Deliverance: “When Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mom, moves her mother and children into a new home, strange occurrences begin to happen, and child protective services, suspects Ebony of child abuse. But when these occurrences reveal to be demonic, Ebony not only has to battle the system for her children, but she soon finds herself in a spiritual battle against a demon for her faith, her life, and for the souls of her children. Inspired by a true story.”

Netflix did its annual blitz, a big dog and pony show for the press last night, revealing its entire film slate for 2024. Lenny Kravitz usually waits for music to come to him, like the way he wrote his iconic 1991 song, “It Ain’t Over ‘til It’s Over”.
“[I was] in the hotel room after my breakup with Zoe’s mom, which was extremely emotional and painful, and I was just staying at this hotel in LA with the curtains drawn, very sad, depressed,” he says. “All I had was a Fender Rhodes, which is an electric piano. And just sat down one day and just started playing these chords.”
Kravitz’s creativity functions “like an antenna” he explains. He had a similar process writing “Let Love Rule”: “I’d written [the words] ‘let love rule’ on the wall outside of my apartment, next to the elevator. And I kept passing this thing for months, in and out of the apartment, in the elevator, in New York. And then, one day, I walked in the...

The lawsuit, obtained by People, alleges that CAA failed to act in his best interests by neglecting to negotiate a higher salary during his time on the show.

In a news conference held on Friday (December 8), Terrence, accompanied by his attorneys and his longtime partner Mira Pak, announced the lawsuit.

“Empire” star Terrence Howard is suing CAA for breach of fiduciary duty, saying the talent agency allegedly asked him to take a lower salary for the popular show. He outlined his claims at a Friday press conference.
Howard played music mogul Lucious Lyon for six seasons of the Fox drama, produced by Imagine Entertainment and what was then 20th Century Fox TV. CAA also represented the producers of “Empire” in a package deal that was lucrative for the agency, he says. As such, Howard’s legal strategy asserts, the agency did not act in his best interest by pushing for a higher salary because it had a profit participation stake through its package, so CAA had an interest in maximizing the total profit that 20th TV realized on the series. Since 2020, the practice of talent agencies receiving packaging fees on TV series was essentially banned after the Writers Guild of...

Terrence Howard sued his former talent agency CAA for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud on Friday, alleging the company urged him to take a “lowball” salary for his role on the hit TV show Empire due to a conflict of interest.
The actor, who portrayed hip-hop music mogul Lucious Lyon on six seasons of the celebrated Fox drama, claims CAA failed to act in his best interest because it also represented Empire’s co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong along with the show’s production companies in a package deal.

‘It’s time for change,” former Empire star Terrence Howard said today announcing he is suing CAA over allegedly screwing him financially over the hip hop soap’s blockbuster six season run. “We need accountability. We need access. We need to be able to share in the profits.”
In a press conference Friday at the office of The Cochran Firm, Howard accused his former agency of engaging in a lucrative packaging deal with the show’s creators and producers Imagine. Consequently, according to Howard and his legal team, the actor was bilked of “a much higher salary given the success of the show.”
“I trusted CAA to look after me, and they looked after themselves.”
At its height, the Taraij P. Henson co-starrer series hauled in around $100 million in advertising for Fox, this new lawsuit claims. Money that Howard thinks he helped generate in his on-screen role as ruthless hip-hop mogul Lucious Lyon.

Terrence Howard is suing CAA for an alleged conflict of interest in the agency’s dealings over his compensation on Empire.
In the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, Howard alleges his agents who packaged the deal with Fox prioritized the interests of themselves and the show’s producers, which it also represented, by inducing him to take below-market salaries over his six-season run starring in the series. CAA declined to comment.
“I trusted CAA to look after me, and they looked after themselves,” Howard said.
James Bryant, a lawyer representing Howard, takes issue with packaging fees, in which agents are paid directly by a studio for attaching actors or a director to a writer’s pitch. “Over the last several years, agencies have become much more powerful and found a much more lucrative way of making money,” he said. “It’s by being the packaging agent,...

Exclusive: Hulu is not proceeding with its planned limited series about Sammy Davis Jr., starring Elijah Kelley as the Candy Man, from Lee Daniels and 20th Television.
I hear 20th Television will be shopping the project to other buyers and plans to attach additional high-level talent before taking it out as part of an aggressive effort to find a new home.
The studio recently was able to set another streaming series, The Spiderwick Chronicles (co-production with lead studio Paramount TV Studios), at Roku, following Disney+’s decision not to move forward with it.
The pickup reversals for both shows come amid a content spend cut across all divisions of Hulu and Disney+ parent Disney, which the company announced earlier this year. Additionally, all media companies have been reevaluating their streaming strategies by cutting programming costs with a renewed focus on profitability.

Jussie Smollett could soon be back behind bars after an Illinois appeals court today backed the ex-Empire actor’s disorderly conduct convictions stemming from a faked hate crime and playing fast and loose with the truth with Chicago cops.
“We affirm the judgment of the circuit court of Cook County,” said appellate Justices David Navarro and Mary Ellen Coghlan for the majority in a largely procedural based opinion released Friday.
On March 10 last year, after multiple trips to court, Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in jail and 30 months’ probation over the staged early 2019 incident on the freezing Windy City streets. Proclaiming his innocence, Smollett was let out of the Cook County jail on March 16, 2022 after an Appellate Court granted a motion from his lawyers for a stay of the sentence pending appeal.

On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). Exclusive: ABC has opted not to proceed with a third season of The Wonder Years. The news comes a month after the reboot of the classic coming-of-age comedy wrapped its Season 2 run on the network.
Originally slated for a midseason return, The Wonder Years‘ second season was pushed to summer, hinting at the show’s potential fate as summer has traditionally been used as a destination for broadcast scripted series that have either been canceled or are likely to be.

When Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels thinks of those who inspired him, Patrik-Ian Polk easily comes to mind.
Known for telling groundbreaking stories centered on Black gay life — including the independent film Punks, which premiered at Sundance in 2000, and Noah’s Arc, which ran on Logo TV for two seasons from 2005-06 — Polk is a creative force who has chronicled (and continues to chronicle) the lives of underrepresented people while championing diversity way before “Dei” became a buzz term.
“[Polk] was way ahead of the curve, and he took the bullets for all of us when it just wasn’t accepted to do what he was doing,” Daniels, 63, says of Polk, 49. “His bravery is what I ran with in my career. I learned from Patrik that I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. When I say he really has inspired me — he’s a mentor.”
