One of the strangest stories of recent weeks was that of The Chilcot Inquiry, the results of a seven-year investigation the U.K.'s role in the U.S.-led Iraq War of 2003. The conclusions drawn in a 2.6 million-word report spoke of massive intelligence failures within the British Secret Service, but it was one particular passage that caught people's attention.
Namely an unnamed source used elements from the plot of Michael Bay's 1996 action-thriller "The Rock" and feed them to British intelligence as fact. It was surprising news, most of all to the film's co-writer David Weisberg who was e-mailed about the story by a a friend from National Geographic magazine.
THR spoke with Weisberg, who co-wrote the film's script with the late Douglas S. Cook, and the writer admitted he "had no idea" this had happened and that it "boggles the mind". He and his co-writer did research and...

Kevin Costner is in a strange place in his career, though his odd choices have managed some wins in the last few years, and Criminal is either the result of an overly powerful actor being too interested in a film’s theory, or an actor who just has a bucket list of roles he’s checking off.
Costner plays Jericho Stewart, a special breed of psychopath who fits in well for an experimental medical procedure that hopes to transfer memories from one person to another. CIA operative, Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds) is the only person who knows where he stashed “The Dutchman” (Michael Pitt), but Pope gets killed before he can tell anyone, and the CIA is scrambling now, because if the Dutchman falls into the wrong hands, he can hand over the U.S. military arsenal.
After Jericho undergoes the procedure, more than Pope’s memories infiltrate his brain.

If the Razzies institute a “Worst Nicolas Cage Movie That Doesn’t Star Nicolas Cage” award this year, Ariel Vromen’s Criminal will be a 2:1 favorite. Fugitive-on-the-run action teases an energetic 90s vibe, but as generic thrills take over, an uber-serious agenda reveals a more serious core. Could people actually believe they were making a high-class experience, here?
What’s essentially a reverse Self/Less scenario follows one of 2016’s most dimwitted plotlines, which isn’t helped by a strive to attain some semblance of straight-laced integrity. Vromen has handled loaded casts before, chilling audiences with The Iceman, but Criminal’s inexcusable waste of such a stacked, Mt. Olympus-sized cast suggests quite the opposite. You want to know what the real crime here is? Pretty much everything.

Kevin Costner is a bad man…or is he? In the upcoming film Criminal, Costner plays Jericho Stewart, a death row inmate who has had the skills of a deceased CIA operative (Ryan Reynolds) implanted in his brain. The feds do this so that they can stop an international terrorist. HitFix has an exclusive clip of the first time Stewart realizes that something’s afoot. In one of the better collection of actors you’ll find, Costner (a two-time Oscar winner) shares the scene with Tommy Lee Jones (also an Oscar winner) and Gary Oldman (an Oscar nominee). As you can imagine, Costner’s character is none too pleased to find he’s basically had a hole drilled in the base of his head. It’ll only get worse when he finds out what this all means. Criminal was written by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, the team behind The Rock.

Ariel Vromen’s next film – Criminal – is shaping up to be proof positive of the filmmaker’s ability to attract fascinating casting combinations. Where his previous movie – 2012’s The Iceman – featured Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, James Franco, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta and David Schwimmer, his forthcoming venture is bringing in names even more legendary in nature.
The plot centres around a dangerous criminal, who is tasked by the CIA to complete a dead agent’s mission after they implant that agent’s memories and experiences into his brain. Kevin Costner will feature in the leading role, with Ryan Reynolds, Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Oldman also signing up. By anyone’s standards, that’s quite a lot of testosterone, so we now have the announcement that Alice Eve will also co-star.

It’s true what they say – talent attracts talent. Further to the news that Kevin Costner is climbing aboard Ariel Vromen’s next directorial effort, Criminal, it now seems that powerhouse actor Gary Oldman is also looking to catch that ride.
The action-thriller, which sees the memories, knowledge and skills of a dead CIA operative transplanted into a prison inmate in an effort to complete a dangerous mission, comes from screenwriters Douglas Cook and David Weisberg – both of whom wrote Double Jeopardy. Ariel Vromen takes the helm for the first time since 2012’s The Iceman. Kevin Costner is said to be locked on to the role of the prison inmate, while Oldman would play a CIA chief.
If the film comes together successfully in this way, it becomes one of the more interesting projects to enter the pipeline. Firstly, the plot would suggest an interesting subversion of the usual good guy/bad guy roles.

The movie follows a dangerous prisoner, played by Costner, who has the memories of a dead CIA operative implanted in him in a bid to stop a potentially catastrophic threat.
Oldman recently apologised multiple times for anti-Semitic remarks he made during a Playboy interview, where he defended Mel Gibson for his past comments.
"Once I saw it in print, I saw that it was insensitive, pernicious and ill-informed. I am a public figure, I should be an example and inspiration and I am an a-hole. I am 56. I should know better.

Exclusive: Millennium Films has acquired Criminal, a spec script by Douglas Cook & David Weisberg, who are best known for The Rock. This one is an action movie about the right man in the wrong body. In a last-ditch effort to stop a diabolical plot, a dead CIA operative’s memories, secrets and skills are implanted into an unpredictable and dangerous prison inmate in hopes that he will complete the operative’s mission. Jc Spink, Chris Bender and Mark Gill are producing. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, Christine Crow and Jake Weiner are executive producers. Millennium is giving this one the fast-track treatment it gave Olympus Has Fallen, which went from script acquisition to screen in 13 months. That $70 million budget film has crossed the $160 million global gross mark with enough territories ahead to feel optimistic it will cross $200 million on the Antoine Fuqua-directed Gerard Butler-starrer.

Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote Red, which went on to become a hit action comedy and is getting a sequel in theatres August 2013, also written by the Hoeber Bros. Now summit wants them to write a female action comedy.
Per Deadline, the film will be a female-centric action vehicle in the vein of Ocean’s Eleven. The script will be based on a pitch by David Weisberg and Douglas Cook.
There’s no title or cast yet, but the damn thing isn’t even written yet; so calm the hell down.
Hollywood seems to be making a push for female driven action flicks. There’s this film and two others trying to use the formula from The Expendables, one is even called Expendabelles!

Exclusive: After scripting Red and seeing it hit as an action comedy built around an aging cast, Jon and Erich Hoeber have been set by Summit Entertainment for another action comedy. This one doesn’t have a title, but I’m told it’s a female-centric Ocean’s Eleven-esque action film that originally was set up as a pitch by David Weisberg & Douglas Cook. The scribes also wrote the Red sequel, which brings back the original cast and adds Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and David Thewlis to the mix. As for the untitled action comedy, it’s produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian with Benderspink exec producing. Verve reps the scribes.

It stars Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and an entire prison island full of great character actors. Ryan looks back at Michael Bay’s The Rock…
By now, Michael Bay's latest giant robot opus, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon has assaulted cinemas with its chunky metal fists, and made a metric ton of money in the process. In its wake, like a shrieking Greek chorus, we've heard the usual derision that greets everything Bay makes.
The movie-watching world, therefore, appears to be separated into two sharply defined camps. On one side, we have the vocal group, who appear to think that Michael Bay is the antichrist with a steadycam rig, and on the other, a quieter faction, who keep paying money to go and watch his films.
Now, I'm not exactly a huge fan of Bay's movies, but then, I don't hate them, either. It's true that his films are never anything more than loud,...

The real "Bourne" franchise may have stalled, but we continue hearing about new franchise possibilities involving a female version of the amnesiac spy. The latest is Bold Films' "Blank Slate," an action thriller that Heat Vision reports is based around the idea of a female convict implanted with the memories and fighting abilities of a fallen CIA agent. The script is from Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, who penned one of my favorite action movies of all time (in spite of how ridiculous it is), "The Rock."
In addition to the obvious "Bourne Identity" comparison, the plot synopsis also reminds me of "Face/Off," "The Eye," "La Femme Nikita" and the 1996 Ray Liotta movie "Unforgettable," in which a detective takes an experimental drug that allows him to acquire memories of other people in order to track down his wife's murderer. Not to put down the originality of "Blank Slate," which...

Video game movies still aren't a hot commodity yet (maybe after Prince of Persia?), but it doesn't mean we can't be excited for more adaptations coming up (like BioShock, too). SlashFilm has learned that writers Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, of The Rock and Double Jeopardy previously, will be adapting the video game Darkest of Days released by Phantom Efx last year (for Xbox 360 and PC). The project is being produced by Joe Roth (Hellboy II, Alice in Wonderland, Knight & Day) and is currently be shopped around to Hollywood studios by CAA. You've got to hear what the plot of this game is, though, it's pretty awesome! Here's a brief synopsis of the introduction to our protagonist and story in the Darkest of Days video game. In Darkest of Days, the player controls Alexander Morris, a soldier fighting in General Custer’s army during the Battle of Little Big Horn...

Last spring, Stan Lee and Disney struck up a deal to develop three superhero-ish projects: Nick Rachet, Blaze, and Tigress. It was all very hush hush, with no indication as to what these new heroes would be other than potential comic books and franchises. But whatever they were, they had lured in the talents of Richard Lagravenese, Gary Goldman, and Zoe Green.
But now we know who and what Nick Rachet is. According to The Hollywood Reporter,
Rachet now has the Douglas Cook and David Weisberg at the keyboard. While we haven't heard much from them since Double Jeopardy, they've been busy writing Captain Kidd and Vespers for Disney.
Not surprisingly, Nick Rachet is an action star ... kinda. In real life, he's a mild-mannered and bumbling police officer but in an online game, he's a tough, sneering badass named Nick Rachet. His avatar ends up escaping from the game and...

Stan Lee might have changed the face of comic books with his many Marvel superhero creations such as Spider-Man and the X-Men, but even in his twilight years, the legendary creator continues to have some tricks up his sleeve.
