Arm was so damaged from the plane crash that doctors recommended
amputation. However his father stopped the procedure right before it
started, and he recovered to play guitar again.
Allen was paralyzed as the result of a 1986 car accident.
Played mostly Gibson Firebirds and Explorers, but sometimes used a Les
Paul Doublecut.
Allen and his wife Kathy had 2 daughters, Amy and Allison.
Allen wrote the music to Lynyrd Skynyrd's rock anthem "Freebird".

His wife Kathy, who had been his high school sweetheart, died suddenly following a miscarriage in 1980, when she was 27. They are buried side by side in Jacksonville, Florida.
He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2006.
