The camera movement in THANATOS, DRUNK is so vigorous, it is as if the images created by Chang Tso-Chi are living. It follows ordinary people through Red House, Treasure Hill, and traditional markets; its shaky, blurred texture transmitting their helplessness and melancholy. The interaction between Maggot, Ants, and Human Being converts the abstract grief into organic spectacle. The story, accompanied by music, drumming, and the humming of Nanguan master Wang XinXin, beats like a pulse and flows like blood, transmitting monstrous poignancy. The film definitely deserves recognition out of all the contenders in this year's Taipei Film Awards.
