Russell Albion “Russ” Meyer was born in California in 1922 and spent WWII as a combat photographer. In 1953 Playboy magazine debuted and Meyer was one of its first centerfold photographers. Meyer had a knack, and a passion, for photographing gorgeous, busty women and felt that the gals in the nudist camp movies that were popular in the ’50s were far too plain-looking for his tastes. In 1959, Meyer scraped together $24,000 and made The Immoral Mr. Teas, a quaint, colorful, and cartoonish movie about a nerdy fellow whose life is constantly interrupted by beautiful large-breasted women in various stages of undress. There was no sex in Meyer’s film and he made no pretense of presenting nudity as a lifestyle choice, as did the nudist camp movies. It was a simple and honest film about...

Each year, the Tribeca Film Festival fills out its schedule with a variety of events that extend far past the typical film fest fare, including their signature Tribeca Talks program and a continuing bent towards the possibilities of Virtual Reality. This year’s slate is no different, offering up intimate chats between industry luminaries (did you know that Robert Rodriguez and Barbra Streisand are pals? they are!) and special screening opportunities for projects both new (Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s “The Vietnam War”) and classic (a “Godfather” one-two punch). There’s a little something for everyone here.
This year’s Tribeca Film Festival takes place April 19 – 30. Check out some of our must-attend events below.

After inking a deal with worldwide sales firm Aldamisa International in February to tackle her first directorial endeavor since 1996's "The Mirror Has Two Faces," Barbra Streisand has settled on a project: a love story based on the relationship between photographer Margaret Bourke-White and author Erskine Caldwell. Deadline's "exclusive" says the film is untitled at the moment, but it was reported as "Skinny and Cat" as far back as June of last year by Showbiz 411's Roger Friedman before the Aldamisa deal even happened, so it's obviously something the multi-hyphenate has been eyeing for some time. Babs is getting back behind the camera. Barbra Streisand, the legendary singer and actress, is set to direct her fourth feature film, her first since 1996. The as-yet-untitled story centers around the romance between groundbreaking photographer Margaret Bourke-White and author Erskine Caldwell, who collaborated on several projects together in the 1930s and '40s. Streisand's previous forays into film-making have all been hugely successful. She made her directorial debut in 1983 with “Yentl,” and went on to helm 1991's “Prince of Tides” and 1996's “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” All three films garnered 14 total Academy Award nominations, and “Prince of Tides” was nominated for Best Picture (though Streisand was famously excluded from that year's Best Director category). Unlike the other three films she's directed, Streisand is not slated to appear in the Bourke-White/Caldwell movie. Casting is currently underway, and shooting is expected to start sometime before the end of the year.

Barbara Streisand is looking to direct her first film in over 16 years. Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett are in line for starring roles, reports Reuters, but despite this the project is yet to be green-lit due to financing issues. Barbra Streisand hasn't directed a movie since "The Mirror Has Two Faces" 16 years ago, but the 70-year-old actress has announced that she plans to direct "Skinny and Cat," a script she'd originally written 25 years ago.
The movie will tell the story of photographer Margaret Bourke-Whiteand and author Erskine Caldwell.
But there's a catch -- Streisand can't get started until she collects enough money for the independently financed film. Her hope is to collect $20 million and begin shooting in January 2013 with already-signed leads Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett, reports Time.
Streisand had originally planned to star in the film herself opposite Robert Redford, but was derailed when Farrah Fawcett put her own spin on Bourke-Whiteand's story to TV.

Barbra Streisand is undeniably still a huge cultural figure-- witness the ticket prices for her upcoming concert at the new basketball stadium in my neighborhood if you don't believe me-- but she hasn't starred in a film in over a decade, unless you count her appearances in Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers (out of respect for her talent, we'll ignore those). The Russ Meyer Show Featuring Kitten Natividad takes place in St. Louis this Friday, June 15th at The Way Out Club. Details at the end of this article.
Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, and Tom Stockman
There was no sex in Meyer’s film and he made no pretense of presenting nudity as a lifestyle choice,...

Russell Albion “Russ” Meyer was born in California in 1922 and spent WWII as a combat photographer. In 1953 Playboy magazine debuted and Meyer was one of its first centerfold photographers. Mondo Topless (1966) is Russ Meyer’s send up of the swingin’ 60′s, a pseudo-documentary portrait of San Francisco, and most of all, a tribute to Meyer’s favorite subject; naked women! The 61-minute sort-of-documentary is sparse, even by Russ Meyer standards – just a rock soundtrack by The Aladdins accompanied by an overexuberant announcer who provides double entendre narration as stacked women dance about displaying their figures. Mondo Topless, which seems relatively wholesome now, was definitely a product of its time and requires historical perspective (and, despite the name of this column, it Is available on DVD).
With today’s endless cornucopia of internet porn, it’s hard to believe that less than 50 years ago, there was an...

The 55-year-old Hungarian maestro Béla Tarr has announced that The Turin Horse will be his final film. The statement is in keeping with the austerity, solemnity and high seriousness of his work. The movie begins with an unseen narrator telling us, over a black screen, that in 1889 Friedrich Nietzsche went suddenly insane after throwing his arms around an abused horse in Turin. "Mother, I'm stupid," he said and never recovered. The narrator's statement ends: "Of the horse we know nothing."
This is followed by a starkly monochrome film in six chapters of life on a remote, impoverished farm occupied by an elderly man (bearded like an Old Testament prophet and called Ohlsdorfer by the intermittent narrator), his pretty, unnamed daughter and their spavined horse, for whom, unlike the British Black Beauty, the American Seabiscuit and Bresson's Christ-like donkey Balthazar, they don't appear to have a name. The dialogue is sparse,...

After his first, and very popular, top ten for Blogomatic3000 on virus outbreaks in the movies, author and critic Kim Newman is back once again with and all-new Top 10 inspired by the eminent release of the awesome comedy horror Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which hits stores next week…
The clever joke at the heart of the witty horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs Evil is that college kids who go camping in the backwoods have seen so many movies about degenerate, inbred killer hillbillies they’re terrified even of basically sweet-natured, if ill-groomed folks like the eponymous duo played by Tyler Lebine and Alan Tudyk. In truth, the American cinema hasn’t been especially enlightened in its depiction of the rural poor of the Appalachians and other mountainous backwoods regions, but it hasn’t presented quite as overwhelmingly negative a vision as you might think.

On Sunday night March 14, TCM is showing a Tina Louise tribute. It is surprising but wonderful that TCM is recognizing the extremely talented redhead who had a very interesting and prolific movie career. First up at 8Pm is Tina in her Golden Globe award winning movie debut as sexy farm nymph Griselda in God's Little Acre (1958) from the novel by Erskine Caldwell. This is followed by the Beach Party knockoff For Those Who Think Young (1964) starring James Darren and Pamela Tiffin standing in for Frankie and Annette with Tina as a sexy singing stripper who moonlights as a math tutor. Also starring is Bob Denver before he and Tina got stranded on Gilligan's Island.
When I asked Pamela Tiffin about Tina, she exclaimed (in my book Fantasy Femmes of Sixties Cinema), “Tina Louise was one of the most beautiful females I’ve ever seen in my life.
