Jai Courtney, Celeste Barber, Deborah Mailman, Matt Day, Tom Budge, Genevieve Lemon and Jack Thompson have been cast in director John Sheedy’s second feature Runt, with cameras rolling on Monday (October 23) in Western Australia.
However it is Lily Latorre, who plays 11-year-old Annie, and adopted stray dog Squid in the title role of Runt, who will be the stand-out stars as their characters make up the champion dog agility double-act that might just save the family’s sheep farm. Latorre’s brother Jack is also in the cast.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is only days away, and the Amazon Prime Video series has earned mostly rave reviews with a few mixed reactions (and one flat-out pan) as critics returned to Middle-earth.
As Variety chief TV critic Caroline Framke wrote in her review: “It’s safe to say that Amazon throwing the weight of its coffers at this property has resulted in a perfectly winning adaptation that unfolds swashbuckling adventures with clear reverence and affection for the considerable mythos behind it.”
Set during the Second Age of Middle-earth (thousands of years before the events of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Hobbit”), the prequel series reintroduces characters from Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, including a young Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo). “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Amazon Studios’ ambitious fantasy series based on the works of author J.R.R. Tolkien and reportedly the most expensive television series ever made, premieres Sept. 2 on Amazon Prime Video. But as the social embargo lifts, critics and fans who have seen the first two episodes ahead of time are flocking to Twitter to share their opinions on the highly anticipated series.
Eric Francisco, senior film/TV writer at Inverse, hailed “Rings of Power” as “big, bold and beautiful” but indicated uncertainty as to whether the prequel series will “sit alongside” Peter Jackson’s film trilogy or “deserve Tolkien’s name.”
“For now, it’s all the maximalist pizazz one might expect from a historically expensive production,” he wrote.
I've seen #RingsofPower and I can say for certain you're in for a treat. Big, bold, and beautiful to behold. Tbd if it'll sit...

Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” TV series will cost approximately $465 million to produce one season, Variety has confirmed.
Radio New Zealand reported that the series, which is currently filming in the country, will spend Nz$650 million on Season 1, which converts to $464.2 million in U.S. dollars. Sources confirmed to Variety that the hefty price tag is accurate although it does include startup costs for launching the series that will presumably be spread out over multiple seasons.
The cost for “Lord of the Rings” far exceeds other pricey TV series like HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian,” which all cost roughly $15 million per episode. Previous estimates for “Lord of the Rings” put the production budget at $500 million for multiple seasons, not to mention the $250 million cost just for the rights from author J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate.

The first season of “Lord of the Rings” will cost Amazon a lot of castar. The retail giant will spend around $465 million to film the first season of its upcoming fantasy drama based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books.
That figure comes courtesy of New Zealand’s Minister for Economic Development and Tourism Stuart Nash. Amazon is filming the series in the Kiwi country, using the same location as Peter Jackson’s popular film trilogy.
“Amazon is going to spend about (Nz)$650 million in season one alone,” Nash told New Zealand’s “Morning Report,” which translates to roughly $465 million U.S. dollars. That spending amount will trigger a tax rebate of Nz$160 million ($114 million U.S.).
“This is fantastic, it really is,” Nash continued. “This will be the largest television series ever made.”
Amazon declined to comment. An individual with knowledge of the production confirmed that figure is correct.

If there is a definitive reason for genre fans to maintain their Amazon Prime subscriptions (besides the free 2-day shipping), it’s the company’s long-gestating untitled Lord of the Rings television series. The New Zealand-based production successfully endured a lengthy pandemic-era hiatus to complete its pilot this past fall, and continues work on subsequent episodes. Yet, the recent exit of cast member Tom Budge seems to signal that the purportedly billion-budgeted series is facing creative difficulties.
Budge revealed his departure from the ensemble of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series with an Instagram announcement, which was complemented by a thematically-appropriate vintage Johnny Cash performance of “Ring of Fire.” However, the circumstances over his exit were not exactly pun-worthy.

Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” television series is so massive it’s reportedly costing $1 billion to produce five seasons, and no one is more blown away by the scope of the production than actress Morfydd Clark. The Welsh performer and “Saint Maud” breakout is tackling the role of young Galadriel, famously played by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson’s original “Rings” trilogy and “The Hobbit” films. The scale of the “Rings” television series is so huge that Clark seems content never to return to such big-budget productions again.
“In many ways, I’m at my happiest and most fulfilled doing more intimate projects like ‘Saint Maud,’” Clark said in a recent interview with NME. “I feel like I’ve got my fix of the massive stuff by doing ‘Lord of the Rings.’ The amount of [people working] on this show is continually mind-blowing. James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels are already back in production in New Zealand, and the next massive Hollywood project expected to resume filming in the country is Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings” television series. New Zealand talent agency Bgt Actors Models & Talent has issued an open casting call for “funny looking” actors or people with scars, burns, missing bones, and more (via The Guardian) to most likely appear as extras in the series. Bgt provided extras for Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” film franchise.
Bgt is located in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, and is calling for actors in the area who have “facial burns, long skinny limbs, acne scars, deep cheekbones, a bulbous or interesting nose, ears that stick out, facial lines, missing bones, large eyes, skinny faces, and more.” Also desirable are “androgynous men and women, hairy hairy people of all ages and ethnicities,...

Actress Mirrah Foulkes makes her directorial debut with “Judy & Punch,” a violent and revisionist tale that looks more like “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” goes to the puppet show than your classic Punch and Judy story. The period piece, which launched at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019 and was followed by a robust tour on the festival circuit, finally hits theaters in the U.S. on April 24, courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films.
Set in an anarchic town known as Seaside, which happens to be nowhere near the sea, married puppeteers Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herriman) are struggling to resurrect their marionette show. The show is a hit thanks to Judy’s deft puppeteering skills but due to Punch’s jealousy-fueled ambition — and his tendency to hit the bottle too hard — the show is thrust into tragedy. With the streaming wars heating up, the major players are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into prestige series designed to keep subscribers hooked. And now that Game of Thrones has wrapped up, there’s a big gap in the market for dragons and swords and everyone’s eager to fill it. Netflix was first out of the gate with the excellent The Witcher and HBO is going with their Game of Thrones prequel show, but the biggest will undoubtedly be Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings.
We still don’t have many details on it, other than that it’ll be a mega-budget show set primarily during the Second Age (with the events we saw in the movies taking place in the Third Age). But we do also know that it’ll be shot in New Zealand, in order to capture the “primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth.

British actor Maxim Baldry (Years and Years) has signed on for a lead role in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series, I have learned.
Baldry was first linked to Lotr last fall but he didn’t have a deal for the show, which was why Baldry was not part of Amazon’s Lotr cast announcement in January that included 15 other actors.
“We still have a few key roles to cast,” Amazon Co-head of TV Vernon Sanders said at the time. Baldry is believed to be playing one of those key roles, and his deal has just closed, I hear.
He joins previously cast Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers and Daniel Weyman.

Just to make things clear yet again it’s important to realize that the Lord of the Rings project coming to Amazon isn’t going to be based off of the same story that Peter Jackson took on years back, but will be showcasing other parts of Middle Earth that will help to round out the stories that we’ve come to enjoy so much. So far it sounds as though the majority if the cast has been selected, and will include individuals such as Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel TV series has rounded out its cast and begins filming soon.
Amazon’s mysterious, purportedly billion-dollar-budgeted Lord of the Rings TV series will take place Long before the events of Peter Jackson’s movies. Setting the tone for this small screen return to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the first two episodes will be directed by J.A. Bayona, who helmed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
The Lord of the Rings TV series is set during Middle Earth’s Second Age – that’s thousands of years before Bilbo Baggins, Gollum or Aragorn ever existed! Moreover, the end of said age was a full millennium before the Wizards even arrived in Middle Earth, which makes the series a prequel in an epochal sense.
