In the heart of the home of the movies, California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday put pen to paper and made the new $330 million increase in California’s film and television tax incentives a reality.
Facing a recall election in September, the longtime studio-friendly Democrat swooped into Netflix’s backyard Sunset Gower Studios on Wednesday to sign the bill.
With the stroke of his pen, California is now offering a whooping $660 million to encourage and juice production here, at least for the next two years. In that context and with an emphasis on diversity, $150 million of the new funding is intended to aid in the building or revamping of much-needed soundstages in and around Los Angeles County.

On Saturday, Donald Trump visited Paradise, California, the town ravaged by the ongoing Camp Fire, which he mistakenly referred to as “Pleasure,” before California Gov. Jerry Brown corrected him. So on Monday’s episode of “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert offered a helpful clarification he thinks Trump could understand.
“Pleasure, Paradise, it’s easy to get them mixed up,” Colbert joked. “Just remember Mr. President, ‘Pleasure’ is the dancer. ‘Paradise’ is where she works.”
While visiting the site of California’s deadliest-ever wildfire over the weekend, Trump said: “You don’t see what’s going on until you come here. And what we saw at Pleasure, what a name, right now.”
“We just left Pleasure,” he continued.

The California Film Commission announced Monday that nine upcoming films have received tax credits to shoot in the Golden State as part of California’s expanded Film & TV Tax Credit Program.
Among the films receiving credits are the upcoming remake of “Scarface” — which will see the story of Tony Montana moved from Miami to L.A. — the film adaptation of the acclaimed HBO series “Deadwood,” and an untitled Universal film directed by “Get Out” filmmaker Jordan Peele as part of his exclusive deal with the studio.

In 2014, California Gov. Jerry Brown approved revisions to the Film Commission’s tax credit program in response to an exodus of higher budget films to other states like Georgia. The new system allows projects previously barred from credit by the old program to be eligible, including TV pilots, hour-long TV series, and most notably, feature films with budgets of more than $75 million.
This has led major Hollywood studios to return to California for some of their projects, including Marvel Studios, which has filmed most of their recent work at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta but is filming next year’s “Captain Marvel” in California. Disney also filmed Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle In Time,” which had a budget of $103 million, in California as well.

Another upcoming film that has just received credit but would have been ineligible under the old system is Fox’s action-drama “Ford vs. Ferrari.” Reporting a production budget of $78 million, the film will tell the true story of the intense rivalry between Ford and Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans after Enzo Ferrari refused to let Henry Ford II buy his company, resulting in Ford upsetting the Italian company at the race by designing the iconic Ford Gt.
Other high-budget projects that have received credit include Fox’s upcoming adaptation of Jack London’s “Call of the Wild,” Paramount’s next “Transformers” film “Bumblebee,” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.”
The next application period for feature film tax credits will be held June 18-22.

Leslie Van Houten, the youngest member of Charles Manson’s cult, has been granted parole and could be released from prison if she is allowed to do so by California Gov. Jerry Brown. One of the people hoping for that release is famed transgressive filmmaker John Waters, who formed an unlikely friendship with Van Houten more than 30 years ago. In 2009, Waters wrote a five-part essay series titled “Leslie Van Houten: A Friendship,” in which he discussed at length how he met and bonded with the former death row inmate and why he believes she should be set free. “She looks.

The romance novel legend vented to us about the recent increase in L.A. burglaries -- and he firmly believes the passing of Prop 57, which Gov. California has filed its opposition to IMDb's attempt to stop a controversial new law over the display of an actor's age. The state tells a California federal judge that the statute is more about contracts than speech.
California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the law in September after Hollywood's biggest actors' guild lobbied for the change. SAG-aftra aimed to combat age discrimination by forcing certain websites to remove age information upon request.
In November, IMDb filed suit and demanded an injunction on enforcement. The Amazon.com subsidiary argues the law is "unconstitutionally over-inclusive because it requires IMDb to censor...

With the first fiscal year for the new California film tax incentives now complete, the California Film Commission on Thursday issued a report that said the $220 million in funding that became available in fiscal year 2015-2016 generated $1.5 billion in direct in-state spending from film and TV production, including $600 million in below-the-line wages. Signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in September 2014, California’s incentive program, dubbed Program 2.0, replaced the existing, first-generation film and TV tax credit program. The Internet Movie Database, otherwise known as IMDb, and other entertainment database sites are now legally bound to remove the age of an actor if they request it. Why? It all comes down to discrimination. We know the entertainment business has always been sexist but it's also known for being ageist. Most recently Renée Zellweger had to defend herself from a critic who felt she shouldn't age or change her appearance but when it comes to lesser known actors whether you get, or are even able to audition for, a job may depend on those hiring knowing your age. A few years ago actor Junie Hoang sued IMDb for revealing her true age, which she said cost her jobs in an industry obsessed with youth. As she put it, "In the entertainment industry, youth is king." She lost, and appealed, then lost again. But SAG-aftra and others have been working...

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Saturday that requires entertainment database sites such as IMDb to remove an actor’s age if asked by the actor to do so. Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier), who authored the legislation (Ab 1687), affirmed that subscribers should have control over whether their ages and dates of birth are on subscription websites used for employment purposes. “Ab 1687 provides a necessary clarification in the law that will help prevent age-based discrimination for individuals seeking employment in the entertainment industry,” Calderon said in June, when the measure passed the Senate Judiciary Committee. California Gov. Jerry Brown on Saturday signed legislation that requires certain entertainment sites, such as IMDb, to remove — or not post in the first place — an actor’s age or birthday upon request. The law, which becomes effective Jan. 1, 2017, applies to entertainment database sites that allow paid subscribers to post résumés, headshots or other information for prospective employers. Only a paying subscriber can make a removal or nonpublication request. Although the legislation may be most critical for actors, it applies to all entertainment job categories. “Even though it is against both federal and state law, age discrimination

On Monday, lawmakers in California passed legislation banning probation under certain conditions for people convicted of sexual assault. The state assembly bill, which was unanimously passed with a 66-0 vote and is now awaiting Gov. The Los Angeles County District Attorney is urging Gov. Jerry Brown to keep Charles Manson alleged former follower Leslie Van Houten behind bars. District Attorney Jackie Lacey penned a five-page letter to the governor, asking that he deny parole to the former follower because she "poses an unreasonable risk to public safety." In April, a Board of Parole Hearings panel found Van Houten suitable for parole. Now, Lacey is urging Gov. Brown to reverse the panel's decision. "She clearly lacks insight, genuine remorse, and an understanding of the magnitude of her crimes," Lacey wrote in the letter obtained by multiple outlets.

It’s only been a few months since California Gov. Jerry Brown tripled incentives for film and television productions and the results are already being felt in Los Angeles. On-location movie and TV productions in the greater L.A. area increased by 11.4 percent in the first quarter of 2016, according to a new FilmL.A. report. And California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program is being credited with the spike to 9,703 shoot days in the region between January to March.
