Tom Cruise stopped by the graduation ceremony of the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Acting School in California this past weekend to deliver a surprise speech, delighting everyone lucky enough to be in the room (except, perhaps, the poor tenured professor who had been planning for months to speak at commencement).
Cruise has a lot to say in ten minutes, but we've decided the following five tidbits from the speech are the most interesting — or at least entertaining — of all.
1.) He was always interested in "why?"
Becoming a successful actor - or at least, a believable actor - presumably requires an abnormal amount of empathy; Cruise being forever interested in "why?" makes sense, considering his acting pedigree-slash-his interest in weird religions based off of '50s sci-fi novels.
2.) He had saved up money to travel Europe after high school, but used it to move to New York to become an actor instead.

Before she was known as the tough but empathetic Det. Olivia Benson on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Mariska Hargitay studied Meisner technique with acting coach Joanne Baron of the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Studio in Los Angeles. Hargitay was in one of the last groups of students that Baron (who now trains instructors) taught herself. Hargitay was also one of the last to take the class the way it was originally designed. The two women spoke with Back Stage and reminisced about the impact of the training on Hargitay's career. Back Stage: What was different about Joanne compared to previous teachers you'd had?Mariska Hargitay: Well, Meisner technique was different than anything I'd ever experienced. It's a really great way to be accountable to your craft and to yourself, but also it takes that kind of focus and dedication to learn anything. And this was a class that actually asked.

Los Angeles native Jemal Draco says he has always felt like an underdog. "I'm ethnic, I'm skinny, I'm short, and I'm very alternative-looking," he explains. That's why he was thrilled when writer/director Kimberly Seilhamer called him in to read for the part of Tyler in her feature-length horror film "One by One: Death's Door" after receiving his submission through BackStage.com."All horror films have the token jock that does what he wants to do and says stupid things, but Tyler is more complicated than that," Draco explains. "Kimberly wanted someone a little more alternative and different. I was just excited to have the chance to actually read for a part like this. I came in dressed in a studded vest, spiked my hair, had boots, ripped jeans, and put my hair in a Mohawk.""We searched high and low for Tylers, let me tell you," says Seilhamer. "I interviewed probably 75 to 100 Tylers.

A woman of many talents, Celeste trained at the renowned Institute Allende in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico, where she learned sculpture, bronze casting, and other artisanal methods in the same traditional way that her mother and grandmother did. She's also a serious political activist who pounds the pavement with petitions in hand, and has just co-written a screenplay about the nineteenth century African-American actor Ira Aldridge. A successful model, Celeste currently serves as one of the hosts of "Destination X," a travel show in which beautiful women do dangerous things in exotic places. When Robin Wright broke onto the scene in 1987 as the luminous, romantic Buttercup in "The Princess Bride," some in the industry thought she was going to be a huge star. Seven years later, she earned cred with Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for her role as Jenny Curran in "Forrest Gump." Scripts flooded in. Superstardom awaited her. But Wright balked, made motherhood a priority, and chose her roles carefully."I still don't want [superstardom], because what comes with it sucks, Wright says flatly. [People in the industry] want to take you into superstardom or celebrityism and all that, which I understand because it's commerce and it's a business. That's not why I'm in the business, though. It's irrelevant. I kind of went down the independent road for longer than they would've liked, I guess. Whatever, I'm happy with my career. She is not, however, happy with all of her performances. Jamie Kennedy is ramping up his producing efforts, signing on for the indie drama "In Northwood."
Nick Stahl will star in the film, a redemption tale centering on a man condemned to a mental hospital for committing murder. Kennedy described the project as taking place "at a moment when you're at a crossroads and have to choose what decisions you would make to survive."
First-time director D.W. Brown, a playwright who was Kennedy's acting teacher, will direct from his own script. The indie-financed project begins production this month.
Kennedy will produce via his Jizzy Entertainment banner. Mike Wittlin and Sandy Solowitz also are producing, with Mike Rachmil executive producing. Olivia Wilde, Dash Mihok and Shohreh Aghdashloo will co-star.
The move is part of Kennedy's bid to ramp up his feature production efforts. He wrote and starred in but didn't produce 2003's "Malibu's Most Wanted," created the Fran Drescher sitcom "Living With Fran" and created and starred on WB Network's "The Jamie Kennedy Experiment."
"I'd like to be someone who produces different things, whether it's funny or scary or dramatic," Kennedy said. "I want to show people I can produce movies without necessarily putting my face in them."...
