Update: The attorney general of Ohio dropped charges against NewsNation reporter Evan Lambert, whose arrest last week in East Palestine drew an outcry from the network and journalism groups as an infringement on his First Amendment rights.
“My office has reviewed the relevant video and documentary evidence, and is dismissing the charges against Evan Lambert as unsupported by sufficient evidence,” Attorney General Dave Yost said in a statement.
“While journalists could conceivably be subject to criminal charges for trespassing in some situations, this incident is not one of them. The reporter was lawfully present at a press conference called by the Governor of the state. His conduct was consistent with the purpose of the event and his role as a reporter.”
Lambert was charged with resisting arrest and criminal trespass, both misdemeanors.

The Biden administration has taken pains to distance itself from Donald Trump’s treatment of the media — which the 45th president delighted in railing against as “the enemy of the people.”
And in late October, Attorney General Merrick Garland officially announced that the Department of Justice will no longer investigate members of the media for their news reporting — including for the possession of classified information. In his remarks, Garland celebrated an independent press as “vital to the functioning of our democracy.”

Dirt biking is one of the most exciting and adrenaline-pumping sports out there. For many people, it’s the perfect way to get out and explore the great outdoors while getting a fantastic workout. And, of course, there’s the bonus of being able to show off your skills to your friends.
Dirt biking is a form of off-road motorcycle racing that takes place on natural terrains such as dirt, grass, and sand. Unlike motocross, which is held on manufactured tracks, dirt bikes allow riders to test their skills on more challenging and varied terrain.
Racing Dirt bikes requires a high level of skill and fitness, as riders must be able to handle their bikes at high speeds over rough terrain. But for those who are up for the challenge, dirt bike races provide an exhilarating way to experience the great outdoors.

The Justice Department formally announced new rules designed to greatly limit prosecutors’ ability to obtain phone and email records of journalists.
The rules, unveiled Monday by Attorney General Merrick Garland, came after the revelation that the DOJ subpoenaed information from reporters for CNN, Washington Post and The New York Times, part of an effort that started during Donald Trump’s administration and largely played out without the journalists’ knowledge. The journalists were not targets of an investigation but were believed to be part of an effort to probe the source of leaks to the news media.
Garland wrote in a memo (read it here) that the department “will no longer use compulsory legal process for the purpose of obtaining information from or records of members of the news media acting within the scope of newsgathering activities.”

Updated, with comment from the Post’s Fred Ryan: Representatives from CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post met with Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday to talk about new rules designed to limit prosecutors from subpoenaing journalists’ records in an effort to find their sources.
The meeting came after the three media outlets reported that some of their journalists had received notice that federal prosecutors had secretly obtained phone and email data starting during the Trump administration. The disclosure apparently was connected to leak investigations.
President Joe Biden has called such a practice “simply, simply wrong,” and the Justice Department subsequently announced a change in policy to no longer seek subpoenas to obtain such records during leak investigations. But the news outlets and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press said that they had a series of unanswered questions as to how the seizure of records happened,...

Justice Department Will No Longer Subpoena Reporters’ Phone And Email Records In Leak Investigations
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Saturday that the Justice Department would no longer subpoena the phone and email records of reporters during leak investigations, after recent revelations that prosecutors secretly sought such information from journalists at The Washington Post, The New York Times and CNN.
In a statement, Psaki said, “As appropriate given the independence of the Justice Department in specific criminal cases, no one at the White House was aware of the gag order until Friday night. While the White House does not intervene in criminal investigations, the issuing of subpoenas for the records of reporters in leak investigations is not consistent with the President’s policy direction to the Department, and the Department of Justice has reconfirmed it will not be used moving forward.”

Update, 3:53 Pm Pt: Joe Biden told reporters Friday that it was “simply wrong” and that he would not let the Justice Department seize phone or email records from reporters during his tenure.
Biden told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that the practice was “absolutely, positively, it’s wrong. It’s simply, simply wrong.”
“I will not let that happen,” Biden said.
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer responded, “That is really encouraging news, especially those of us, we are all biased,” referring to concerns among journalists that such actions stifle the reporting process.
CNN reported on Thursday that its Pentagon correspondent, Barbara Starr, was informed that during the Trump administration, prosecutors had secretly obtained her phone records, presumably as part of a leak investigation. The Washington Post reported recently that three of its journalists also had their phone records for that year also seized.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and 64 media organizations have sent a letter to the LA County Sheriff’s Department today condemning the arrest of Kpcc/LAist reporter Josie Huang.
Huang was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice on Sept. 12 after the Saturday night shooting of two L.A. County Sheriffs. A crowd of agitators gathered outside St. Francis Medical Center, where the shooting victims were taken. The crowd blocked the emergency entrance and exit and chanted, “We hope they die,” the sheriff’s department said in a tweet. Huang states she was merely trying to cover the volatile scene when she was arrested.
The letter called for obstruction charge against her to be dropped and for the department to take steps to avoid future arrests of working media members. Earlier, SAG-AFTRA also protested Huang’s arrest.

The weekend’s images of protests of the death of George Floyd also saw widespread reports of members of the media being attacked, harassed, injured and arrested as they covered everything from peaceful marches to looting and unrest.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, run by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, said that they “are in the process of documenting at least 100 different incidents of aggressions against the media over the weekend” — from May 29 to May 31. The numbers may go higher as incidents are reported from Sunday evening. Of the more than 60 assaults on journalists they have tracked, 10 include damage to news equipment.
Still to be determined is how many of the incidents involved police action against journalists covering the protests, as reporters shared stories of being injured by members of law enforcement.

A tweet from the Minneapolis State Patrol on the early morning arrests of CNN reporter Omar Jimenez and his crew has drawn sharp criticism for its inaccuracy.
Jimenez and his camera crew were arrested during a live CNN broadcast early Friday while covering the Minneapolis protests over the death in police custody of George Floyd. The entire incident unfolded live on CNN’s New Day. Jimenez could be seen identifying himself as a reporter while holding his CNN badge and telling State Patrol officers his crew would move wherever police needed them to. Jimenez was placed in handcuffs and walked away by the officer. He was then followed by the rest of the camera crew, who also were placed in handcuffs and taken away. They were later released after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz intervened.

Police arrested CNN journalist Omar Jimenez and his crew on air early Friday during a live broadcast in Minneapolis, as they covered riots sparked by George Floyd’s death, sparking intense outrage as well as an apology by Minnesota governor Tim Walz to top executives at the cable-news network. CNN called the arrests a “violation of First Amendment rights.”
The correspondent was taken into police custody even though he identified himself, and his media credentials were clearly visible. Their camera continued to record during the arrests. By 7:40 a.m. eastern, Jimenez had been released and was back on air. Governor Walz told CNN he “deeply apologizes” and said the arrests were “unacceptable.”

“The Endless Summer” movie filmmaker Bruce Brown, through his Bruce Brown Films, LLC, has sued Nike and Footlocker for trademark infringement after the sports company allegedly used the title in a promotional campaign.

How to Stuff a Wild Bikini
Blu ray
Olive Films
1965 / 2.35 : 1 / 93 Min.
Starring Annette Funicello, Dwayne Hickman, Mickey Rooney
Cinematography by Floyd Crosby
Directed by William Asher
Sam Arkoff and James Nicholson, the men behind such teen-friendly drive-in fare as Reform School Girl and High School Hellcats, caught a monster wave with 1963’s Beach Party and hung on for three long years before sinking into the sunset with Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, a haunted house spoof starring Tommy Kirk and a frail Boris Karloff.
It was a wild ride sustained by Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon and a rotating cast of fun-loving deadbeats who would become as familiar to 60’s audiences as Eugene Pallette and Hugh Herbert were to depression era movie fans. As weighty as a cherry popsicle in July, the movies were aimed at high schoolers but the gags were older than dirt – vaudeville humor with that Coppertone tan.

Washington — Those who sat in on the At&T-Time Warner antitrust trial last spring became all too familiar with a sound that, with a flick of a switch, pervaded the courtroom: The static-like sound of white noise, designed to muffle moments when attorneys for both parties huddled with U.S. District Judge Richard Leon to resolve disputes in private bench conferences.
Those moments took up a substantial amount of time during the trial, and now the Justice Department wants transcripts of those meetings released.
The government is asking that the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals order that the transcripts be unsealed, except for portions that the parties already have agreed contain confidential information.
Among the topics discussed during the bench conferences were objections to witness questions and testimony, along with evidentiary issues, as well as a number of Leon’s rulings.

For those of you not familiar with documentary filmmaker Bruce Brown, he is the man who brought us the legendary surfing film The Endless Summer (1966) and it's sequel The Endless Summer 2 (1994). He made a few other documentaries as well, like On Any Sunday (1971), which was nominated for an Oscar. I loved those movies and I'm sad to report that Bruce Brown passed away this past Sunday. Bruce Brown, director of the classic surfing film The Endless Summer, has died. He was 80.
The general manager of Brown's film company Alex Mecl says Brown died Sunday in Santa Barbara, California, of natural causes.
Brown and his 1966 documentary The Endless Summer created the modern image of surfers as spiritual seekers on a quest, rather than thugs or buffoons.
And, along with the Beach Boys, he took surfing from a quirky hobby to a fundamental part of American culture.

I live in Los Angeles, and my residency here means that a lot of great film programming-- revival screenings, advance looks at upcoming releases and vital, fascinating glimpses at unheralded, unexpected cinema from around the world—is available to me on a week-by-week basis. But I’ve never been to Cannes. Toronto, Tribeca, New York, Venice, Berlin, Sundance, SXSW, these festivals are all events that I have yet to be lucky enough to attend, and I can reasonably expect that it’s probably going to stay that way for the foreseeable future. I never attended a film festival of any kind until I made my way to the outskirts of the Mojave Desert for the Lone Pine Film Festival in 2006, which was its own kind of grand adventure, even if it wasn’t exactly one for bumping shoulders with critics, stars and fanatics on the French Riviera.

Five years after director Bruce Brown made the seminal surfing movie “The Endless Summer,” he made what many considered the definitive motorcycle movie “On Any Sunday” (1971), which included some of the world’s leading bike-race enthusiasts, including movie star Steve McQueen (whose jump over Nazi barbed wire in “The Great Escape” had been feeding adolescent fantasies since the Kennedy administration). Thirty-three years later, Dana Brown -- who helped his father turn out “Endless Summer II” in 1994 -- has directed “On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter” which includes some of the more hair-raising riders in the motocross world and some of their more spine-tingling stunts. (The film is currently in limited release.) “‘On Any Sunday’ was the film I saw when I was 11 or 12, and made me want to become a filmmaker,” Dana Brown said in New York this week. “I thought it was amazing. And then I had this apprenticeship...

Also in theaters this weekend: "The Theory of Everything" tells the extraordinary story of renowned physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his relationship with Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). In "Jessabelle," the titular character returns to her childhood home to recover from a horrific accident only to find a long-tormented spirit awaiting her return. "The Better Angels" tells the story of Abraham Lincoln's childhood in the harsh wilderness of Indiana and the hardships, tragedy, and women that shaped him. "On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter" chronicles the international sport of motorcycle racing. The documentary was inspired by Bruce Brown's 1971 "On Any Sunday.

This week, Christie’s, the world’s largest fine arts auction house, is hosting an inaugural online-only sale of what are billed as Vintage Film Posters, though it is an eclectic collection of old and new. There are plenty of familiar faces, like Reynold Brown’s Attack of the 50Ft. Woman, Saul Bass’s The Man With the Golden Arm, Giorgio Olivetti’s La Dolce Vita, Bob Peak’s My Fair Lady, and Philip Castle’s Clockwork Orange, but what is interesting in terms of the auction market is the inclusion of a number of recent Mondo posters by Tyler Stout, Todd Slater and Laurent Durieux. The auction also includes La Boca’s already-classic, four-year-old set of silkscreen teasers for Black Swan.
The poster that really caught my eye, however, and one I’d never seen before, is this stunning Deco design by one Ram Richman for Jean Grémillon’s...

Long before live sports coverage and countless reality shows saturated every corner of the television market, Bruce Brown's pioneering motorcycle racing documentary On Any Sunday blazed a trail across movie screens back in 1971. Brown, who had made his name with the equally stunning surfing doc The Endless Summer, captured a wonderful variety of motorcycle racers and fans, including actor Steve McQueen, competing fiercely (and treated like every other rider) at the height of his stardom. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Now, 43 years later, Brown's son Dana Brown has made a follow-up documentary, On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter. As might be expected, the younger Brown follows in his father's footsteps by focusing on racing, but he...

The European premiere of Dana Brown’s motorcycle documentary On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter will open the action strand Savage Cinema at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, set to run in the Basque region from September 19-27.
Brown’s film is the follow-up to his father Bruce Brown’s acclaimed On Any Sunday, the iconic 1971 documentary about motorcycle racing that featured Steve McQueen.
On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter documents the passion for motorcycles around the world and features the participation of famous names from the world of two-wheels such as Robbie Madison, Dani Pedrosa, Marc Márquez and Mickey Rourke.
The film is produced by RedBull and is the first to be announced in the second iteration of Savage Cinema, the section that caters to adventure and sport cinema, a genre that according to festival director Jose Luis Rebordinos has become a rising force.

A quarter-century ago, Kevin Costner hit a double-play, following up "Bull Durham" with "Field of Dreams" and becoming king of the sports movie. Twenty-five years later, as "Field of Dreams" marks its 25th anniversary (it was released on April 21, 1989), Costner is back with "Draft Day." The movie's about football, not baseball, and Costner's character plays in the executive suite, not on the field, but his mere presence still offers a reminder of great sports movies past.
And after all, isn't nostalgia a key element of sports movies? "Field of Dreams" makes this explicit -- we long for the sports heroes of our childhood, for a supposed long-gone golden age of our preferred sport, as a way of connecting with our past and bridging the generational divide that separates us as adults from our parents. Sports movies offer more than just the drama of winners and losers, or the journey from dream to achievement,...

Think of Steve McQueen and you most likely think of him astride a Triumph motorcycle in The Great Escape or racing through the streets of San Francisco in a green Ford Mustang in hot pursuit of a black Dodge Charger in the film Bullitt or dressed head to toe in white racing overalls with his Porsche racing car in Le Mans. McQueen has always been synonymous with motor vehicles and it is common knowledge that his main interest outside of movies was motor sport, in particular a passion for off road motorcycle racing.
When Bruce Brown, director of the seminal 1966 surf documentary Endless Summer, decided to turn his hand to documenting the lives of motorcycle racers and racing enthusiasts with his 1971 film On Any Sunday, it is no surprise that he turned to Steve McQueen to not only appear in the film but to produce it as well through his own Solar Productions company.

You don’t have to surf to get stoked about Dana Brown’s recent doc Highwater. There’s a lot more than epic 15-foot tubes to admire. The son of Bruce Brown who made the groundbreaking Endless Summer (1966), Brown made his mark with Step into Liquid (2003) and now turns his lens to the beaches of Oahu's North Shore during the Van Triple Crown of Surfing.
But Brown’s coverage is no blow-by-blow rundown of competitors, ratings and elimination rounds. Aside from interviews with some of the sport’s greats like eight-time World Champion Kelly Slater, the audience is also introduced to up-and-coming stars such as the young teenagers Jon-Jon Florence and Carissa Moore as well as others who have sacrificed much for their love of the sport, including shark attack victim Bethany Hamilton and Jessie Billauer, who despite his paralysis after a surfing accident, maintains a passion for the ocean.

All you really need to know this week is that the best action/adventure in years is coming home this summer. But if you are a completist, then we have rock stars, comic book heroes and zombies. Surfing filmmaker Bud Browne has died at his home in San Luis Obispo, California. He was 69.
A former Venice Beach lifeguard, Browne was dubbed `the father of surf films' after capturing the sport's top names in action in the 1950s.
His Hawaiian Surfing Movies is a cult film for surfing enthusiasts.
Between 1953 and 1964, Browne released a new surf film each year - filmed mostly in Hawaii and Australia. These included Cat on a Hot Foam Board and Gun Ho! and captured icons like Miki Dora, Dewey Weber and Gerry Lopez in action.
The director also developed equipment which revolutionised surf movies.
His films and fearless techniques inspired surf movie's great moviemakers, including The Endless Summer's Bruce Brown, who paid tribute to his mentor in the Los Angeles Times.
He says, "It was a big deal to go to Bud's movies and to see if you were in it."...
