The world of special effects makeup often feels like a dying art, with studios and streamers increasingly pursuing CGI and digital FX over practical artistry. Now, there is absolutely room for both styles and different films call for different methods, but gone are the days where the average moviegoer can recognize the name of a special effects makeup artist. Diehard fans are, of course, the exception to the rule, and there's at least one name that horror fanatics all know by heart and are stoked as hell to see on an end credits crawl: Steven Kostanski.
For the uninitiated, Steven Kostanski is one of the most fascinating voices in genre cinema working today. His films "The Void" and "Psycho Goreman" are both well-loved favorites, he finally gave the "Leprechaun" franchise a solid film with "Leprechaun Returns," and Kostanski's...

Screenwriter Robin Swicord hasn’t seen “Practical Magic” in the 25 years since it was released. For her, it’s hard to remember much about the film outside of “trying to figure the movie out and do my best to write something that would get made and be worth it,” she told TheWrap in an exclusive interview. Swicord is Hollywood’s go-to screenwriter when the town needs a book adaptation. Her writing has defined a generation from her 1994 adaptation of “Little Women” to working with perceived unadaptable material like 2005’s “Memoirs of a Geisha.”
“Practical Magic” is a bittersweet topic for Swicord, though, due to changes with the script that would eventually be credited to her, as well as Akiva Goldsman and Adam Brooks. Creative clashes with director Griffin Dunne compelled Swicord to “write that one off,” she said. A surprising admission given the film’s beloved status by many, especially when fall rolls around.

Manborg. Father’s Day. The Void. Leprechaun Returns. Psycho Goreman. There’s been a throwback element to all of the feature films we’ve gotten from director Steven Kostanski so far, and his next feature will be no different. Variety has confirmed that production has wrapped on Kostanski’s horror comedy Frankie Freako, which is said to be a “commemoration of various practical FX-led projects including Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Ghoulies Go to College“. Well, if you say your movie pays tribute to Gremlins 2 and Ghoulies 3, you’ve already sold me on it.
Shout! Studio holds the U.S. distribution rights to Frankie Freako, but release plans have not yet been announced.

It seems as though Psycho Goreman isn’t the only hunky boy in filmmaker Steven Kostanski‘s cinematic universe; Variety reports horror comedy Frankie Freako is on the way.
While Psycho Goreman introduced writer/director Kostanski’s take on ’90s tokusatsu, centered around an intergalactic conquerer, Frankie Freako will unleash a maniacal rock-n-roll party monster.
Frankie Freako stars Conor Sweeney as he accidentally lets loose “a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the rambunctious ruffians and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip, all while going on an unexpected journey of self-discovery.”
Adam Brooks (Psycho Goreman) and Kristy Wordsworth star alongside Sweeney.

In Netflix’s Partner Track, the rom-com is a bait and switch for a story less about finding your love and more about finding yourself.
The 10-episode first season, which dropped on the streamer on Aug. 26, follows Ingrid Yun (Arden Cho), a talented and determined first-generation Korean American and senior associate who is looking to secure a junior partnership at her high-profile law firm.
But as she finds — with the help of her friends, family and a few love interests — her persistence and ingenuity might not be enough to overcome the racism and sexism of her white male-dominated workplace.
Based on the book by Helen Wan, showrunner Georgia Lee drops viewers into a glossy world where on the surface, seemingly the biggest challenge for the beautiful, intelligent and fiercely good lawyer is only whether the men she dates are good enough to be her partner.

Don’t Return focuses on a college student who, after the death of his father, returns to his family home (the opposite of the UK retitling of this film!) along with his best friend and girlfriend, only to uncover some bad memories from his childhood that he didn’t even realise were there.
Much of Don’t Return feels as formulaic and uninspiring as the title but the are glimmers of what could have been. Its shining light might just be its two leads. Richard Harmon plays Rodger, the brilliant mathematical college student returning home. It’s a fairly understated performance, the character isn’t very flash and Harmon is, like his co-lead Echo Andersson, best when the scenes are at their most emotional.

The boundaries of creativity are as limitless as space itself in sci-fi horror, meaning no shortage of fantastical and monstrous aliens that have terrorized the big screen over the decades. It opens with a gladiator-level war of attrition between two middle school-aged siblings in their backyard. The game is called “crazy ball” and the loser gets buried alive. Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre) pick-up their respective dodgeballs, throw them as far behind themselves as possible, and run after the other as fast as they can to try and take advantage of the five-point bonus “butt shot” rule. Writer/director Steven Kostanski shoots it like battle with blaring score, close-up scowls, and pools of mud leading towards the inevitable “switcheroo” that makes it so you can steal victory from the jaws of defeat with a punch to the gut. And through it all is the playful absurdity we can expect from a movie titled PG: Psycho Goreman.
The sequence’s best part, however, is an outlier lasting just a few seconds. Kostanski shifts the vantage point to what appears to be an upstairs window.

"The kind of genre cinema we dream of." Rlje Films has debuted a new official trailer for the upcoming VOD release of a wacky horror sci-fi comedy titled Psycho Goreman. We featured a teaser trailer earlier in the year before the film's originally planned premiere at SXSW (before the fest was cancelled). This is the latest film from Canadian filmmaker / SFX artist Steven Kostanski (who most recently made The Void) and it instead premiered at Monster Fest and the Sitges Film Festival this year. PG, or Psycho Goreman, is about two kids who, using a magical amulet, force the evil monster who showed up to obey their childish whims, and accidentally attract a rogues' gallery of intergalactic assassins to small-town suburbia. Starring Nita-Josée Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey, and Matthew Ninaber as PG. This looks ridiculously awesome and totally kooky and I am so looking forward to it.

Two underrated Ryan Reynolds movies, Buried and Definitely, Maybe, are now streaming on Prime/Hulu and Netflix, respectively.
About two decades ago, Reynolds’ only claim to fame was a little sitcom titled Two Guys and a Girl. An uninspired show which tried to imitate iconic comedies of the time, it hardly predicted the future that was in store for one of the two male leads. In the years that followed, Reynolds would star in numerous roles, some good, some bad.
Honing his comedic timing through films like Just Friends, The Proposal and The Change-Up, the actor eventually landed the part of Deadpool. Rectifying the mistakes made during the atrocious X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds delivered a film that honored the zany comic strips on which it was based, and gave Fox a franchise that could rival even Marvel’s.

Deadline reported earlier this afternoon that Rlje Films and Shudder, both companies under the AMC Network umbrella, have acquired at least the North American rights for Steve Kostanski's PG: Psycho Goreman. The film was set to have its world premiere at SXSW earlier this year. We're saying North American because Rlje Films works primarily in America while Shudder has territories in America and Canada. Written and directed by The Void’s Steven Kostanski, the film revolves around siblings Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre), who unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord (Matthew Ninaber). Using a magical amulet, they force the monster to obey their childish whims, and accidentally attract a rogues’ gallery of intergalactic assassins to small-town suburbia. Adam Brooks also stars. ...

Canadian filmmaker Steven Kostanski (Manborg, Leprechaun Returns, The Void) is back with Psycho Goreman, a horror-comedy that was just acquired by Rlje Films and Shudder. “Featuring a supporting turn from Kostanski’s Astron-6 collaborator Adam Brooks (and a few other surprise cameos), PG (Psycho Goreman) introduces emerging stars Nita-Josée Hanna and Owen Myre as Mimi and Luke, a perpetually bickering sister/brother duo who unwittingly resurrect […]...

Exclusive: PG: Psycho Goreman, the horror comedy that had been bound for the Midnight section at SXSW before the festival was shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic, has been acquired by Rlje Films and Shudder. Rlje Films is planning a late 2020 theatrical release, while Shudder will premiere the film on its platform in early 2021.
“PG: Psycho Goreman is a perfect movie for all of us who grew up in a video store,” Rlje Films chief acquisitions officer Mark Ward said. “It has so much heart, thrills and fun that we believe this could be a franchise.

Leaders of the Writers Guild of America have told members that they may need to extend to current contract beyond its current May 1 expiration due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Members received the message on Tuesday afternoon, a day after Variety reported that the WGA was evaluating its options for conducting contract talks with Hollywood’s major studios that were to have started on March 23. The coronavirus prevention measures appear to have made it untenable for the sides to hold a face-to-face bargaining session.
The WGA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are trying to come to terms on an extension date for the guild’s existing Minimum Basic Agreement that covers most film and TV work. The current pact is set to expire May 1. But given the upheaval to regular business brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, the sides need more time to negotiate what is sure to...

If you’ve ever had a squidgy soft spot for John Carpenter’s The Thing, then 2016’s The Void is a legit must-watch.
Of course, 1980’s style body horror shockers are simply few and far between these days. However, luckily for us, Canadian writer-director Steven Kostanski hit it out of the blood-soaked park with his criminally underrated Lovecraftian cosmic horror flick by channeling his inner Carpenter while delicately blending in some healthy dollops of twisted Hellraiser writing and potent Silent Hill imagery, too.
Nefarious cults, hellish abominations, batshit crazy doctors and secretive private investigators take centre stage in an unsettling otherworldly tale of skin-crawling dread. Not only did the pic boast one of the most eye-catching posters ever, but it also triumphed with some of the most jaw-droppingly awesome practical visual effects this side of the millennium, which cemented the Canadian filmmaker as one to watch for the future.

The SXSW festival has announced its program for the Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Special Events, Episodic Pilot Competition, and late addition Features for its 2020 film festival.
This year’s program has 135 feature films, including 99 world premieres, 9 North American premieres, 5 U.S. premieres, and 75 films from first-time filmmakers. The SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite for festival attendees who like the weird, electric and terrifying selections. It includes dark comedies, thrillers and slasher horror.
“Programming the Midnighters section this year felt especially invigorating,” Jarod Neece, SXSW Senior Film Programmer, said. “The filmmaking teams, while particularly diverse, all seem to be using their films as a cathartic lens to view the modern-day world. One trend we noticed was the presence of a strong female protagonist fighting off everything from hordes of zombies, bad dates, creepy rideshare drivers and supernatural forces. As always, genre filmmaking can be found throughout the SXSW program, and...

In the opening minutes of Tapeworm, a man (Adam Brooks) pulls into a gas station to use their restroom, only to find it occupied. Unable to hold it in, he runs into the woods where he empties his bowels on the ground. We’re then treated to a long close-up of his shit, which is covered in blood. The man, despondent at the sight of his bloody stool, continues walking into the woods. He comes upon a lake, where a young couple (Stephanie Berrington and Sam Singer) are having sex on a dirty mattress, where he startles them by taking a seat on an unused corner of the mattress. He tells them to continue, and they do.
Shot on 16mm, Milos Mitrovic and Fabian Velasco’s Tapeworm sets a tone where numbing mundanity rules over everything. It’s set in Winnipeg, and it follows the three aforementioned characters along with...

The Writers Guild of America on Friday tapped more than 30 members to serve on the guild’s negotiating committee for the upcoming contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The current three-year collective bargaining agreement, which covers most of the work done by WGA writers, is set to expire on May 1, 2020.
The looming contract negotiations have been a source of much anxiety in Hollywood as fears of a potential strike have bubbled in recent months. The negotiations are especially interesting for the WGA, which is still in a stand off with Hollywood talent agencies over how they are represented and the packaging fees agents collect for bundling talent together for networks and studios.

The WGA has appointed the members to its negotiating committee in the run-up to its talks with management’s Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for a new film and TV contract. See the list below.
The current pact expires on May 1. No date has been set for the talks to begin, and it’s not clear whether the WGA will begin bargaining before the Directors Guild, whose contract doesn’t expire until two months later. In years past, the DGA has gone first, reaching deals that have set the pattern of bargaining for the WGA and SAG-AFTRA to follow.
In the upcoming WGA talks, WGA West executive director David Young will serve as the guild’s chief negotiator, with Michele Mulroney, Shawn Ryan and Betsy Thomas serving as co-chairs. Ex-officio members of the negotiating committee include WGA West president David A. Goodman, WGA East president Beau Willimon,...

With Hollywood already fearing a strike, the Writers Guild of America has appointed more than two dozen members to serve on its negotiating committee for upcoming negotiations on its master contract.
The current three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) expires on May 1. The guild’s seven-month standoff with agencies has heightened worries that the WGA will go on strike after the contract expires.
The WGA is required to seek approval of its “pattern of demands” before meeting with the companies. WGA West executive director David Young, who orchestrated the bitter 2007-08 strike, will serve as chief negotiator. Michele Mulroney, Shawn Ryan and Betsy Thomas are the co-chairs.
Notable names on the committee include “Crazy Rich Asians” writer Adele Lim; Meredith Stiehm, one of the plaintiffs in the WGA’s suit over the legality of CAA, UTA and Wme charging packaging fees; Patric Verrone, who...

Charades, the Paris-based sales banner, has boarded a pair of stylish English-language genre films: Steven Kostanski’s science fiction comedy “Psycho Goreman” (pictured), and “Cosmogony,” a psychological thriller directed by Vincent Paronnaud (“Persepolis”).
“Cosmogony” follows Eve, who meets what she thinks is a charming guy in a bar. Yet things go terribly wrong once she realizes she has come across a psychopath and his accomplice. They engage in a death chase until she decides to fight back with the forest as her only ally.

Welcome to this week’s Major League Wrestling: Fusion review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Mlw forgot/neglected to do a recap of their own, so you’ll just be hearing from me again. Hell with it. We’ll do just fine. By the way, Austin Aries makes his big return to Mlw and he does it, right now…
Match #1: Austin Aries beat Adam Brooks
My Opinion: 3.5 out of 5 – They actually gave this time to flourish. This was an excellent introduction for both men, but it was all about Aries here. Aries dominated the wrestling and dictated the pace and purpose of every-thing you saw. Looking fitter and more agile than ever, he took his controversial drawing powers and poured them into the forge of Major League Wrestling and helped craft a bout that will serve as a weapon against any-one that doubts his abilities...

Welcome to this week’s Major League Wrestling: Fusion review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have more from one of the most interesting leagues around today. Let’s not waste any time. Here comes The Monkees…oh…oh $#!@. I got the wrong one. You know what the thing is called. Hopefully, the matches are better than my introduction.
Match #1: Air Wolf defeated Rey Fenix The following is courtesy of mlw.com:
Nineteen-year-old rookie sensation Air Wolf has become quite a fan favorite in his short time in Mlw. He may have gained a new fan in one half of the Lucha Bros — Rey Fenix. Air Wolf and Fenix squared off and while Air Wolf took a beating from Fenix, he managed to avoid being pinned by the veteran luchadore. Air Wolf had his moments throughout the match, including a pair of German suplexes that were absolute beauties.

Netflix’s ‘Nappily Ever After’ Trailer: Sanaa Lathan Plays a Control Freak Who Loses Control — Watch
Fifteen years ago, “Real Women Have Curves” director Patricia Cardoso almost made “Nappily Ever After” for Universal Pictures, with Halle Berry in the lead role. An adaptation of the bestselling first installment from Trisha R. Thomas’ eight-book series eventually found a home at Netflix. Berry’s onetime part went to Film Independent Spirit Award nominee Sanaa Lathan (“Love & Basketball”), also the project’s co-producer.
As advertising executive Violet Jones — changed from Venus Johnston in the books — Lathan is a coiffure-conscious perfectionist who believes she’s engineered herself a happy ending. Yet life begins to capsize when her doctor beau presents her with a Chihuahua instead of a proposal, and she is taken off an important work account.
