Considered the first film noir to feature a leading black protagonist, Odds Against Tomorrow is a vital entry in the noir canon. Directed by legend Robert Wise and produced by star Harry Belafonte’s HarBel Productions, the gritty look at racial tension is also one of cinema’s most important films about prejudice. Created amidst growing disquiet in America, the film heralds the explosive events to come at the dawn of the 1960s and the Civil Rights Movement.
The screenplay was based on the novel by William P. McGivern (The Big Heat) and secretly written by Abraham Polonsky, who penned the screenplays for films such as Body and Soul and Force of Evil. Polonsky had been blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee, so Belafonte approached black novelist and friend John O. Killens to serve as the credited screenwriter. Getting your heart broken never feels good. It’s something we all go through at least once, though. Fortunately, our favorite shows can help us as we wallow over and eventually move past a bad breakup. We’ve picked three Sex and the City episodes that are perfect to watch when dealing with a breakup. Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York, and Miranda Hobbes always make us feel a bit better.
‘Sex and the City’ season 1 will make you feel better about your taste in romantic partners
When you’re dealing with a bad breakup, heartbreak, or even a bit of hookup embarrassment, the ladies of Sex and the City will be there to remind you that everyone has lapses in judgment sometimes. While the latter seasons of Sex and the City dealt with more intense breakups, season 1 was light and fun.

Richard Wright first appeared in season 4 of Sex and the City and unexpectedly swept Samantha Jones off her feet. Fans were initially into the relationship. After several seasons of watching Samantha strut through New York City’s often troubled dating scene, it was nice to see her find a man that seemed well-suited to her. That ended quickly, though. Fans largely despise Richard for breaking Samantha’s heart by cheating on her. We are here to defend the ever-sexy hotel magnate.
Samantha Jones had three significant love interests in ‘Sex and the City’
Samantha Jones wasn’t a woman who wanted to be tied down. Unlike her best friends, Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York, Samantha wasn’t in the pursuit of romance. She was looking for great sex and little else. Still, she had a few significant love affairs during the show’s six-season run.

William Goldman’s international conspiracy thriller provides Dustin Hoffman with an outright ‘action man’ star vehicle. The public applauded supporting star Laurence Olivier, who with just a few gestures creates a terrifying villain: “Is it safe?” William Devane and Marthe Keller co-star. We wish Roy Scheider’s character could have continued in a series of crime thrillers — he brings genuine movie star charisma. The story is by William Goldman, from his own book.

Pink Floyd are set to make an estimated £400m from the sale of their back catalogue.
It has been reported that the American private equity group Blackstone is competing with other companies such as Sony, Warner, BMG and Primary Wave for Pink Floyd’s catalogue.
According to The Times, the deal and copyrights would also include the band’s songs and master copy recordings.
The publication also reports that the band is looking for £400m but said the deal could fall apart if it goes over that number.
Pink Floyd was founded in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright, joined in 1967 by singer and guitarist David Gilmour.
Initially, the band released two charting singles and celebrated the successful debut of their 1967 album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
Earlier this year, Pink Floyd released its first new music in almost three decades to raise money for the people of Ukraine.

APA has signed the estate of The Godfather author Mario Puzo for representation.
The agency will represent the media rights to the author’s novels with the goal of sales for motion picture and streaming minseries adaptations.
Puzo is best known for Godfather, his 1969 novel that was on the New York Times best-seller list for 67 weeks and reportedly sold 9 million copies in two years. The author gained further fame when Francis Ford Coppola adapted the book into the classic film starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. Paramount may own those rights, but APA is betting that in this age of insatiable hunger for stories, there will be plenty of interest in the author’s many other works.

Another unexpected comic treasure from the mid ’70s! Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston make an irresistible pair of would-be outlaws in a tale of the modern West — high-country Montana, actually — where a gentleman rancher from New Jersey owns all the land and making an honest living is just too boring. Thomas McGuane’s hilariously laid-back dialogue pits our slacker cattle rustlers against society — but only in the pursuit of having a good time. Frank Perry’s beautifully directed show gives choice roles to a fistful of actors: Clifton James, Elizabeth Ashley, Harry Dean Stanton, Slim Pickens, Charlene Dallas, Richard Bright, Joe Spinell, Patti D’Arbanville. Call it ‘literate’ country comedy, with musical accompaniment by Jimmy Buffett. The extras include a great new interview with star Jeff Bridges.

Blood, gore and the smell of gunpowder! Sam Peckinpah’s booze-soaked Odyssey sends Warren Oates on a grisly fool’s errand to retrieve a rotting, fly-bitten… oh, just read the title will ya? Resolutely sordid and debased, and soaked in ugly exploitation values, the tale of ‘Machete Bennie’ nevertheless scores as Peckinpah’s last successful movie — if Edgar Allan Poe went crazy locked in a room with rotting corpses, he might have come up with this idea.

Bring back the Age of Aquarius! Olive Films returns with the company’s best Signature Edition ever. The show is an excellent choice for a special edition, as seen by the simply terrific interviews in its battery of added value featurettes. Top creative contributors have been tapped for some great memories. Rather than filming a simple adaptation, Milos Forman reinterprets the hit show, allowing Twyla Tharp’s choreographic genius to soak into most every scene — the result is a marvelous melding of theatrical and cinematic effects.

Werner Herzog’s latest documentary, a tribute to writer Bruce Chatwin, will air in Britain on the BBC, which commissioned the film for its long-running documentary series “Arena,” the pubcaster announced Tuesday.
“Nomad – In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin” is scheduled to have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 28. In the U.K., the feature-length documentary will air on BBC Two later this year as part of the broadcaster’s “Arena” strand.
Written, directed and narrated by Herzog, “Nomad” explores the creative and personal vision he shared with his friend Chatwin, the travel writer and adventurer.
Shortly before his death in 1989, Chatwin summoned Herzog with a request to see his television documentary “Herdsmen of the Sun,” about tribesmen of the Sahara. In exchange, Chatwin gave the German filmmaker the rucksack he had carried with him on his travels around the world. Thirty years later, “Nomad” sees...

“Racial Tolerance: It’s Good for America And good for Criminals!” Harry Belafonte’s second production is a noir keeper, thanks to a top-flight cast and sharp direction by Robert Wise. The big heist is on, but Robert Ryan’s anger management problem all but assures doom and disaster. It’s Wise’s last gritty action picture before moving up to big-scale audience pleasers; he pulls off some slick images with film sensitive to infra-red light.

Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid
Directed by Sam Peckinpah
Written by Rudy Wurlitzer
1973, USA
Sam Peckinpah was not an easy man to get along with at the best of times and the battles he faced in making Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, now widely considered as amongst the top dozen Westerns ever made, are legendary even by his standards. Peckinpah wanted his name taken off the film after a distraught MGM instructed the half-dozen editors (probably a world record by the films release in 1973) allocated to the film to hack the footage into something more straightforward and to their minds more marketable, reducing the run time to under two hours and most crucially shaving off the pathos riven, 1908 set bookends of the film, these bridging buttresses detailing the final fate of one of the titular characters in light of the main narrative tragedy. Say you’re putting together a syndicate. One of the first things that you are going to need is somebody to take care of your light work for you when words have run out. As a means of determining the appropriate skill set for this oh-so-important addition to your workforce, the Complex has assembled a ranking of some of the more legendary henchman ever to grace the screen. You know, as a way to gauge some of the qualities you might be looking for.
In ranking these heavies, extra points were earned for singularity of purpose, imperviousness to pain, and skill within the realm of hand-to-hand combat. Points were taken away for any actions tantamount to a betrayal of the henchman’s employer, or conspicuous behavior likely to cause more trouble than harm.
Here’s how they shook out.
10. Clarence Boddicker (Robocop, 1987)
Strengths: Professional henching is a tough, competitive business.

That is exactly what director John Schlesinger (Darling; Midnight Cowboy; Sunday, Bloody Sunday) and screenwriter William Goldman (adapting his own novel, reportedly with some help from Robert Towne) manage to do in the thrill-less "thriller" Marathon Man. Adding insult to injury, the villain I came to root for was a horrific Nazi war criminal, while the hero that bored me to tears was a pacifist Jew. Now, how could anyone manage to tip the scale toward such a monstrous character, especially when we have a Jewish hero fighting him? Well, ask Laurence Olivier, who has a grand...
