Jay Bulger lives a life that embodies a romantic’s idea of a New York City bohemian – he's been a model; actor; webisode personality; party promoter; boxer; writer, now director (to say nothing of cancer survivor). Check out his web show “Driving with Jay” (see below) or read his New York Magazine article about Paz De La Huerta, and you can see a sort of modern anthropologist at work, fascinated by personalities forming and reforming themselves in public. His current subject is Ginger Baker, the legendary Cream drummer who he profiled for Rolling Stone last year in The Devil and Ginger Baker. Baker is now the subject of Bulger's first feature documentary, nearing completion. Bulger met Baker through email, after tireless “six degrees”. They began corresponding. A few months later, he showed up unannounced at Baker's home in South Africa and somehow, convinced Baker to allow him to stay for a while.

Chase and Status have stated that they would love to work with Adele. The 'Blind Faith' duo are said to be impressed by her trashing of Lady GaGa in the UK singles chart this week and want to lay down her soulful vocals over one of their drum and bass tracks. "Adele is blowing everyone away right now," Saul 'Chase' Milton told The Star. "She’s such a cool girl too: down-to-earth (more)...

Ke$$ha has scored her first UK singles chart number one with latest track 'We R Who We R'. The 22-year-old star, who previously reached a chart high of four with her 2009 debut 'Tik Tok', zoomed to pole position after selling over 90,000 copies of her fifth release as a main artist. The song peaked at 95 in previous weeks based on downloads alone. Meanwhile, two new entries grace the upper section of the chart this week, Chase & Status's 'Blind Faith' at five and 'Yeah 3x', the twelfth UK top 40 hit from R&B singer Chris Brown, at ten. Elsewhere, positions 11-20 display risers aplenty, the most notable of which are Tinchy Stryder's 'Let It Rain', which is up 11 places from 25, album chart champion Adele and her 2008 ballad 'Make You Feel My Love', up four to 15, while Taio Cruz and Kylie Minogue's (more)...

All right, so Kanye West has had a rough couple of years. He's aired his lunacies to millions on Twitter. He's a punching bag for TV journalists. And worst of all, the only things he's created are the Kanye Interruptus meme and one lame album. (No link on that last one).
But his craziest feat in recent memory: scoring a 10 out of 10 rating for his new album on Pitchfork and launching with some of the most beautiful and controversial cover art of any hip-hop album in recent memory. (Rolling Stone gave it 5/5, too.)It's called "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," and it's very, very good--but you got that.
So what's the deal with the covers? There are five of them, all commissioned to 53-year-old New York artist George Condo, an abstract painter who came up in the '80s with the likes of Keith Haring and has several pieces in the permanent collection at Moma.

Rocker John Mayer thrilled fans at a sold-out concert on Sunday, August 22 after inviting jazz star Brad Mehldau onstage for a duet set. The singer took to his Twitter.com page last week and hinted that his concert at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl would be extra special, teasing, "Planning something so beautiful for the Hollywood Bowl show... Stay tuned..."
And Mayer kept his promise - he and pianist Mehldau wowed the crowd with a collaborative set as the sun went down over the outdoor venue. The duo covered Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary", "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith, and Led Zeppelin's "Going to California", before transitioning into Mayer's own "Stop This Train".
They ended the set with a jazz rendition of The Verve's 1997 hit "Bitter Sweet Symphony".

Traffic: John Barleycorn Must Die (Island)
This album started out, in the wake of Traffic's breakup in early 1969 and the brief existence of Blind Faith, as a Steve Winwood solo album. Really solo: Winwood, besides being a fine songwriter and possessing the most soulful vocal style of any Englishman in that era, was also more than capable of handling all the instrumental chores himself -- keyboards, guitar, bass guitar or organ pedals, and even drums.

If you should spot Eric Clapton in the next few hours, be sure to throw some streamers at him and find out what flavor ice cream cake he prefers, because the legendary guitarist turns 65 years old today. The man who was called both "Slowhand" and "God" back in the 1970s has laid out an unbelievable career for himself, contributing to some of the most iconic rock bands and songs of all time.
In the '60s, he moved around from band to band, serving time in the Yardbirds (a haven for iconic guitarists who later gave work to both Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (where Clapton had his first real chart success), Cream (a retroactive supergroup that featured fellow Bluesbreaker Jack Bruce and legendary drummer Ginger Baker) and Blind Faith (another supergroup that also featured Traffic guitarist Steve Winwood). The list of songs that feature Clapton...

Forty-four years ago this week, I attended my first rock concert. Many others naturally followed, from Blind Faith to Springsteen, Elvis Costello, U2, Lucinda Williams, and the Swell Season, along with about eight years as the #2 editor at the legendary Crawdaddy. But that first concert remains vivid, and historic, as it was one stop on what many consider the most significant (and craziest) tour ever -- Bob Dylan's first full road trip after going electric. In October '65, still in high school, I was a huge Dylan fan, especially after he went electric and hit the top with "Like a Rolling Stone" just that summer -- and got booed at Newport. I took a really bold step: ordering a pair of tickets for a Dylan show on Nov. 20 at Kleinhan's...

For a band made up of three old-school rock and roll veterans, Them Crooked Vultures have chosen a very 2009 way to debut their first single as a band. "New Fang" is the first studio recording unleashed by the supergroup that consists of Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl on drums, Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme on guitar and vocals, and the trio unleashed it on the universe via Twitter. Though the group has been touring sporadically since last month and plenty of heavy-sounding performance footage has made it to the Web, "New Fang" represents the group's first entry into an actual recording, and the results are impressive. Buoyed by a loose, insistent drum beat, a crunchy riff and a slightly psychedelic guitar lead, "New Fang" presents Them Crooked Vultures as a classic power trio and often recalls the Eric Clapton projects Cream and Blind Faith.

The superb British poster for Terry Gilliam’s latest folly The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (which opens today in the UK and on Christmas Day in the Us) is all in the details. The movie most famous for being the film Heath Ledger was in the middle of shooting when he died (and thus nearly yet another unfinished Gilliam project) is here pushing not Ledger, nor his none-too-shabby stand-ins Jude Law, Colin Farrell or Johnny Depp, but doll-faced British supermodel Lily Cole. At first and even second glance the image of a pale, naked, child-like red-head with a blank stare seems deliberately reminiscent of the notorious Blind Faith album cover designed by Bob Seidemann (look it up if you have to). It also has an obviously Alice in Wonderland quality to it, so it seems almost redundant that Cole will next be starring as Alice in the equally verbosely titled...
