The producers of “Dancing With the Stars” are responding to the controversial casting of Sean Spicer (Season 28) and Adrian Peterson (Season 32), among others.
“We’re a silly ballroom dance show, we’re teaching people how to cha cha. The country is divided, so half of the people may have one political view and the other half have the other. At the core of it, we always just go for nice, good people,” executive producer Deena Katz told Variety following ABC’s unscripted panel at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday.
Katz added that former White House press secretary Spicer became friends with many members of the cast during his time on the show. However, there was a great deal of controversy amid his casting, with former host Tom Bergeron among those expressing disappointment over how the show was being politicized.
“I think everyone needs to, for the two hours you’re watching,...

“Dancing with the Stars” Season 32 is back and it’s a bit different Season 31 — including having a new (old) home. Here’s everything to know about the season.
Where is “Dancing with the Stars” Season 32 airing?
ABC and Disney+. That’s right. After one season exclusively on Disney+, “Dancing” returned to ABC for Season 32, which will also stream live on Disney+. It is the first series to be simulcast on ABC and Disney+. Episodes will also be available the next day on Hulu.
“I’m very happy we’re back on ABC,” Derek Hough told TV Insider in June. “I think it was fantastic that we moved to Disney+ for a season. It did great, but I think that there’s definitely [still] an audience on ABC, a very loyal audience that may have missed out on last season. It’s groundbreaking in that I’ll be on both platforms as the same time.

Former Dancing with the Stars host Tom Bergeron has opened up about the events that led to him being fired from the show after 15 years.
While appearing on Cheryl Burke’s Sex Lies and Spray Tans podcast, Bergeron explained that, when he met with the showrunner and producer in 2019, he urged them to keep the show apolitical amid a polarizing election year.
“Don’t go there,” Bergeron recalled saying to his bosses. “Just make us the wonderful escape from all that divisiveness for two hours a week.”
A few weeks later, Bergeron was given the cast list for the show’s 28th season and saw that former White House press secretary for Donald Trump, Sean Spicer, was included.
“I said, ‘Guys, this is exactly what we said we wouldn’t do,'” Bergeron explained. “And I would have responded the same way if they had booked Hillary Clinton, whom I voted for.

Tom Bergeron was once the host of Dancing With the Stars.
After being shockingly fired from the series in 2020 alongside then-cohost Erin Andrews, the series has struggled to fill the void.
Years later, Bergeron is opening up about the road to his departure to former DWTS pro Cheryl Burke on her Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans podcast.

Tom Bergeron, former longtime host of Dancing With The Stars, is opening up about his exit from the reality competition series. After hosting DWTS since its launch in 2005, Bergeron was dismissed in 2020 after being publicly critical of the show’s choice to cast Donald Trump’s White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer in Season 28.
He divulged the details that led up to his departure in a conversation with DWTS alum Cheryl Burke on her Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast Monday.
He told Burke he sat down with showrunners in 2019 and discussed potential contestants for the upcoming 28th season. At that time, he and showrunners agreed that the show would be a “wonderful escape from that divisiveness” of the 2020 election cycle.
He was then shocked to learn that the show had cast Spicer for the upcoming season.

Tom Bergeron, the former host of “Dancing with the Stars,” has spilled on “the one betrayal” that led to him being fired from the show he hosted for 15 years.
Bergeron said on Cheryl Burke’s “Sex, Lies and Spray Tans” podcast that he met with the series showrunner and a producer about the direction of the 2019 season, and was adamant that the show should stay apolitical ahead of a heated election year.
“Don’t go there,” Bergeron recalled saying to the agreement of both. “Just make us the wonderful escape from all that divisiveness for two hours a week.”
A few weeks later, Bergeron was given the lineup for Season 28 of “Dancing with the Stars” – which included former White House Press Secretary for Donald Trump Sean Spicer.
“I said, ‘Guys, this is exactly what we said we wouldn’t do. And I would have responded the same way if they had booked Hillary Clinton,...

Tom Bergeron is opening up about his dismissal from ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and the former host is not holding back.
The 68-year-old left the reality competition series in 2020 after being openly critical of the producers casting Donald Trump’s White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer in the show’s 28th season. Speaking with the Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans podcast, Bergeron detailed his perspective of the behind-the-scenes conversations that led to his ouster after hosting the hit show for 15 years.
Bergeron says that leading up to the fateful year, he had signed a new contract for three seasons. During a couple of lunches with various producers (whom he did not name), he urged them not to cast any political figures due to the pending presidential election and the increasingly divisive climate: “Make us the wonderful escape from all that divisiveness for two hours a week.” The producers seemingly enthusiastically agreed.

Former “Dancing With the Stars” host Tom Bergeron reunited with dancer and franchise veteran Cheryl Burke on the latter’s “Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) and reflected on his tumultuous exit from the long-running ABC reality competition series. Bergeron was the original host of the program and led the show for 28 seasons. He parted ways with “DWTS” after the 2019 season because the show executives did not listen to his advice about staying out of politics and cast Sean Spicer, the hugely controversial former press secretary for President Donald Trump, to compete.
“In the summer of 2019, I had two lunches — one with that showrunner person and another one with his boss,” Bergeron remembered. “I said, ‘Well look, 2019 is the threshold to an election year in America, we are a very divided country. Former Dancing With the Stars host Tom Bergeron, who helmed the show for its first 28 seasons, has opened up about his firing and what “pissed him off” about the situation. Appearing on Cheryl Burke‘s Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast, Bergeron spoke candidly to the former DWTS pro, revealing how Sean Spicer‘s casting in 2019 led to his falling out with the ABC competition series. The veteran host explained how he’d met with DWTS producers to discuss the upcoming season and suggested that they not cast any political figures due to the contentious nature of the 2020 presidential election. Bergeron left the meeting thinking they were all on the same page with wanting the show to be an escape from politics. However, he shared how he later received a “phone call from the showrunner and another producer” who told him the line-up of celebrities for the 28th season. “And...

Hollywood is mourning Suzanne Somers, star of sitcoms “Three’s Company” and “Step by Step,” who died Sunday after a long battle with breast cancer. The actor would have celebrated her 77th birthday on Monday, Oct. 16.
Somers was known for her roles as bubbly “dumb blonde” Chrissy Snow in “Three’s Company” and single mom Carol Foster Lambert in “Step by Step.” Somers left “Three’s Company” in 1980 when her request that she be paid the same as her male co-star, John Ritter, was denied. After the end of “Step by Step” in 1998, Somers transitioned to a career in health and beauty, becoming the national spokeswoman for exercise device the ThighMaster. Over time, she built a fitness empire from TV infomercials and an expansion into e-commerce. She also made an appearance in 2015 on Season 20 of “Dancing with the Stars.”

After various bumps in the road, Dancing With the Stars Season 32 finally hit the air on Tuesday night.
What was once a perfectly satisfactory competition series has desperately struggled to recapture its former glory.
The biggest flaw in Dancing With the Stars Season 32 Episode 1 out of the gate is ABC's decision to eliminate a competitor during the season premiere.
We get it: You want the series to have stakes and highlight that anyone could be eliminated anytime.
But as a viewer, watching the arcs of the competitors is one of the best parts of the show.
Knowing what they've gone through and how they approach criticism delivers compelling stories that allow us to root for the people we like.
Unfortunately, by the end of the premiere, Matt Walsh's time on the reality TV hit was already over.

Elliott Smith’s pre-solo band, Heatmiser, is back with another previously unreleased single from their forthcoming rarities compilation, The Music of Heatmiser (due on October 6th). Entitled “Bottle Rocket,” the song was recorded in 1992 and is a transportive artifact from the band’s early days. Stream it below.
Originally included on a demo cassette that the band was using to promote themselves during their 1992 tour, “Bottle Rocket” is not only a time-capsule of sorts, but also conveys Heatmiser’s lively energy and undeniable musical chemistry. Beginning with an appropriate amount of grungy, rock riffage, the song’s arrangement opens up to a melodic chorus with a descending chord progression and call-and-response vocals. Over top, lyrics from the band’s Neil Gust carry a feeling of yearning, albeit, a bit esoterically.
As Gust has explained recently, though, those esoteric lyrics had a very specific and personal meaning. Several years prior to writing “Bottle Rocket,...

“Dancing With the Stars” is coming back to ABC for Season 32, Variety has confirmed with sources.
The move to bring the reality competition series back to the broadcast network comes after the show aired one season exclusively on streamer Disney+. For its upcoming season, the show will air on ABC while also streaming on Disney+. In addition, the show will be available the day after its linear debut on Hulu.
Reps for Disney declined to comment.
The move to bring the show back to broadcast is not altogether a surprise, particularly given the news that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) officially called for a strike against the major Hollywood studios for the first time in 15 years. With the strike, scripted TV production is likely to be impacted, meaning unscripted fare like “Dancing With the Stars” will become even more important to networks and streamers.

As it enters its 32nd season, Dancing with the Stars is facing its most significant overhaul yet. Viewers will see all the shake-ups when the series returns to Disney+. However, will fans respond to even more changes for the longstanding reality dance competition series, or will they turn it off for good?

Big changes have affected DWTS before. However, they have not always been well-received by fans. Months after season 28 ended, it was revealed longtime host Tom Bergeron had declared his final ballroom winner. Out with Bergeron was his co-host, Erin Andrews, a former DWTS competitor.
Banks faced mixed reactions from fans of the series during her first year as the series’ host. Many viewers had difficulty warming up to the former supermodel.

After being a pro and a judge, Julianne Hough will return to “Dancing with the Stars” next season as a host — and she can hardly believe it.
“It’s crazy. It’s a full-circle moment,” Hough said on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Thursday. “I was on the show and I was a dancer first, won my first two seasons back to back and then came back as a judge and that was one of the most fulfilling moments. And then, of course, to come back now as a host, it just really does seem full circle.”
Hough will co-host Season 32 with Alfonso Ribeiro, replacing Tyra Banks, who announced her exit last month after three seasons — two as a solo host and one with Ribeiro, the Season 19 champ. Hough’s new gig was met with praise from fans and her predecessors, including Banks and original host Tom Bergeron.

Everyone is stoked about Julianne Hough joining “Dancing with the Stars” as co-host next season, including her co-host himself, Alfonso Ribeiro.
“I think we are gonna be incredible together,” Ribeiro told “Entertainment Tonight.” “I think even from, like, hanging out and talking and feeling our energy together, we both see the show the exact same way and we wanna make it family again. Make it really just warm and everybody have a great time.”
Last month, Tyra Banks announced she was leaving “Dancing” after three seasons. Hough, a two-time Mirrorball champ and former judge, was soon tapped as co-host alongside Ribeiro, who joined the show last season. In Season 32, Ribeiro, who won Season 19, will assume the primary host duties on the dance floor while Hough will man the skybox.
