From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

A few months ago, Madonna announced that she would direct a biopic of her own life. It came after Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, which were produced by Elton John and Queen’s Jim Beach respectively. Joining this musical canon – albeit as a footnote – is Dave McLean’s Schemers,in which the shrewd promoter tells his origin story of hustling through the music scene of 1980s Dundee.
McLean begins his adaptation with a dubious nod to Trainspotting, showing a cuckolded thug chase young Davie (Conor Berry) down a cobbled Scottish street. This glaringly hackneyed reference is followed by many more, yet the strength of Berry’s carefree performance manages to cut through the threadbare pastiche on occasion.
Berry cuts an endearingly insouciant figure as Davie, with a long, skinny frame and a neat mop of hair. When a broken leg dashes his football dreams, Davie organises a gig to impress local...

After big awards haul at the Oscars 2019, Bohemian Rhapsody could land a second movie, according to Queen's music video director Rudi Dolezal. According to pagesix.com, the director says the band and its management are lining up behind a sequel to the smash hit Bohemian Rhapsody. Dolezal, who directed videos for the band, and became close with late Freddie Mercury during his life, gave a hint on a possible sequel during an interview about Queen's manager Jim Beach. "I'm sure he plans a sequel that starts with Live Aid." Dolezal added that the follow-up film is now "being heavily discussed in the Queen family".

In what has been an ever-changing scenario since the race for the 91st annual Academy Awards began in earnest at the beginning of September with the fall festival trifecta of Venice, Telluride and Toronto, the hunt for Oscar has been as confounding and difficult to call as ever. The so-called precursor awards have been all over the map. Critics groups, BAFTA, and DGA drifted towards Roma; the Golden Globes loved Green Book (which also took the top PGA honor) and Bohemian Rhapsody; BAFTA showered seven wins from 12 nominations on hometown favorite The Favourite; everyone seemed to root for Spike Lee’s best-in-decades BlacKkKlansman; SAG gave their top prize to box office behemoth Black Panther; an early frontrunner was A Star Is Born; a latecomer was Vice.
The Academy nominated all eight of these films for its top prize, but the outcome remains murky and will probably stay that way right...

Bohemian Rhapsody soars on the strength of a performance by Rami Malek, who got under the skin of iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in a way that has made him the prohibitive favorite in the Oscar Best Actor race. The film chronicles the formation, rise, and adversity weathered by the band before its titanic 1985 Live Aid turn that is still considered one of the greatest concert performances ever turned in by a super group. The picture has been a passion project for guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, who were the creative consultants on the film and who rose to fame with the late Mercury and bass player John Deacon.
Considering that its director Bryan Singer was fired two weeks before production was completed, the film has surprisingly soared like no rock biopic before it, on the strength of the performances and a rocking soundtrack featuring Queen’s signature tunes.

Talk about a dramatic twist: Bohemian Rhapsody took home the biggest award at the 2019 Golden Globes when it was named Best Drama. The Freddie Mercury biopic starring Rami Malek beat out A Star Is Born, If Beale Street Could Talk, Black Panther and BlacKkKlansman. Aside from original song, A Star Is Born was shut out from the major awards, stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper did not win. Malek won in Cooper's category and Glenn Close in Gaga's for her work in The Wife. Executive producers Graham King and Jim Beach accepted the award. "Wow, now, that was unexpected. Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. That's amazing," King said. "The power of movies is that it...

When Sacha Baron Cohen left the Freddie Mercury biopic back in 2013, it was hard to imagine another chameleon who could step into the skin of the flamboyant 1970s-80s musical genius who died at 45 after battling AIDS. Then came Mr. Robot star Rami Malek who went from playing a paranoid introvert on the USA series, to portraying one of the rock world’s loudest game-changing extroverts in Bohemian Rhapsody. Stepping into the shoes of a recent celebrity is one of the most daunting assignments an actor can face; how do you meet the expectations of audiences familiar with the subject without coming off like a Las Vegas impersonator? But after an extensive physical and psychological prep, Malek fit the part of Mercury like a glove.
How did the role of Freddie Mercury come to your attention? Were you tracking it?
I was not tracking it all. I was unaware of it.

Troye Sivan is the latest star to cover a Queen classic ahead of the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. His version of “Somebody to Love” follows 5 Seconds of Summer’s “Killer Queen” and Shawn Mendes take on “Under Pressure” with Teddy Geiger.
For Sivan’s cover, the singer-songwriter transforms the classic anthem. Stripping away the gospel influence of the original, he turns the undertones more atmospheric and tender. The change makes the request for “somebody to love” more somber and vulnerable than the confident optimism of Freddie Mercury’s original.

Rami Malek gives a musical performance for the ages as Freddie Mercury, but this Queen biopic is all glam and not enough rock.
It is always a curiosity when star and a star vehicle are at odds. Sometimes this is because a performer does not gel with the material, but in the case of Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, it is due to his vast surpassing of it—like a shooting star leaping through the sky. With the responsibility of portraying Freddie Mercury, one of the undisputed musical geniuses of the 20th century, what he achieves is less a performance and more an act of necromancy. For it is some kind of magic trick when he conjures the spirit of Queen’s lead singer before our eyes, which will be more than enough for audiences who want to relive the music and brilliance of a man who thought the best...

As the Fall Festival train continues and distributors continue to roll out their awards season goodies, 20th Century Fox bypassed the idea of a fest unveiling and presented the first screening of their Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, last night on the Fox lot in L.A. If the idea was to firmly plant Rami Malek among top contenders for the Best Actor Oscar, then it was mission accomplished.
In front of invited members of the Academy, SAG nominating committee, select guilds, and a handful of awards bloggers, Malek proved beyond a doubt he was the right choice to play iconic Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in a performance that just pops off the screen, alternating between high energy and high drama, and brilliantly capturing both the man and the performer in all his complexity and style. Much to the surprise of no one, 20th Century Fox and Bryan Singer have officially parted ways.
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, revealing that Singer is no longer attached to direct Bohemian Rhapsody, the musical biopic about the life and legacy of Freddie Mercury, after his erratic behavior allegedly brought production to a standstill late last week.
Filming on the starry pic, which sees Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek as the late Queen frontman, was expected to resume after Thanksgiving. But Singer’s “unexpected unavailability” meant cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel was forced to assume directorial duties for a number of days, leaving Fox with little choice but to remove Bryan Singer from his post.
This decision comes off the back of numerous reports of escalating tension between Singer and Rami Malek, who voiced his concerns to Fox about the filmmaker’s “unreliability and unprofessionalism.” At one point, Tom Hollander,...

But after seeing the actor in action thanks to a recent set video (seen above), we can safely say that 20th Century Fox picked the right man for the job.
While we don’t know too much about the film just yet, it will reportedly spotlight “a 15-year period, starting in 1970 when Mercury met his bandmates, up through their legendary Live Aid performance in 1985.” Now, with production well underway, the rest of the cast is starting to assemble and today, Deadline brings word that two more key roles have been filled.

Perhaps it was too good to be true. Over the weekend news emerged that Sacha Baron Cohen was to write, produce, direct and star in the forever developing Freddie Mercury biopic. It was a surprising turn of events for the once-attached actor, and while there was even a source quote from Queen's manager Jim Beach made during the Artist & Management Awards, it turns out there has been a bit of a misunderstanding. Addressing the issue on his website, Queen member Brian May chalked it all up to a joke gone awry: "[Reports don't] mention a small joke that Jim threw in during his acceptance speech. He said that, in response to enquiries about the progress on the Freddie feature film, that Sacha Baron Cohen had been re-engaged to write, produce, and direct the film, as well as starring in all four major roles! I’m afraid some folks might have taken it seriously!

For the last time, no, Sacha Baron Cohen will not be rocking you as Freddie Mercury. The 43-year-old prank-loving British actor, best known for onscreen alter egos such as Borat, and Ali G, was in 2010 attached to a biopic about the late Queen frontman, one of the most iconic rock singers of all time, who died at age 45 in 1991. Baron Cohen left the movie project in 2013. On Thursday, the band's manager, Jim Beach, sparked excitement among fans with some curious comments while accepting the Peter Grant award for outstanding achievement in managerial skills at the 2015 Artist and Manager Awards: He said Baron Cohen had returned to the project and would even do more than just star in it....

Brian May has said that the recent announcement surrounding Sacha Baron Cohen's return to the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic was "a small joke".
The Queen member says that Jim Beach's announcement at the Artist and Manager Awards 2015 on March 26 shouldn't be taken seriously.
On his website, May wrote: "[Beach] said that, in response to enquiries about the progress on the Freddie feature film, that Sacha Baron Cohen had been re-engaged to write, produce, and direct the film, as well as starring in all four major roles!

Baron Cohen, who was originally attached to star as Mercury in the biopic, pulled out of the project in 2013 over creative differences with the Queen bandmates.

After exiting the project more than two years ago due to creative differences, Sacha Baron Cohen reportedly was back onboard the untitled Freddie Mercury biopic this week.
According to the band's manager Jim Beach viaThe Daily Mail, Cohen will now star in, write, produce and direct the film as well.
That was surprising news considering that when Cohen left the project, it was reported that the existing members of the band Queen did not like the direction Cohen was going with the material. Cohen reportedly wanted a gritty hard-r take on the gay singer's life, whereas the band members wanted a more PG, family friendly version.
So have Cohen and the band come to a new agreement? If so what tone will the project be heading for now?
Turns out the report has been dismissed as false. Queen guitarist Brian May has posted on his website that Beach was only joking,...

The saga of the long developing Freddie Mercury biopic is as operatic as "Bohemian Rhapsody." Once promisingly slated to star Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor bailed from the movie after he couldn't come to an agreement with the surviving members of Queen over the tone of the movie. Throughout, there has been a lot of talk, but not much action. Dominic Cooper, Daniel Radcliffe, and Ben Whishaw were tossed around as possible stars at various points, while Stephen Frears, Tom Hooper, Dexter Fletcher, and even David Fincher were all mentioned as potential directors, with varying degrees of likeliness. Meanwhile, a script by "The Queen" screenwriter Peter Morgan has been kicking around for a while. Now it looks like the remaining members of Queen are not only going back to Cohen, but giving him total creative power. The band's manager, Jim Beach, during the Artist & Management Awards (man, there are awards for.

Sacha Baron Cohen has rejoined the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic.
The comedian, who previously exited the project after reportedly falling out with the remaining members of Queen, will now help to write, produce and direct the movie, as well as taking the lead role.
Music Week reports that the band's manager of 40 years, Jim Beach, announced Baron Cohen's re-appointment at the Artist and Manager Awards 2015 last night (March 26).
Skyfall actor Ben Whishaw had been singled out by Queen drummer Roger Taylor as a preferred replacement for Baron Cohen back in 2013.
The band also expressed concerns that the comedian's involvement would turn the project, based on the late singer's life, into "a joke".
Sacha Baron Cohen can next be seen in the Louis Leterrier-directed spy spoof Grimsby.
The comedy, which also stars Rebel Wilson, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Gabourey Sidibe, Isla Fisher and Annabelle Wallis, will be released on July...

An unreleased series of duets from Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury is reportedly set for release this fall. The songs, which were recorded by the pair in 1983, have yet to see the light of day.
Mercury's former Queen bandmates, Brian May and Roger Taylor, broke the news of the duets this week. May and Taylor said that there will be “something for folks to hear” in the coming months, according to The Times.
The pair has been working on readying the tracks, with May reportedly calling the project "exciting, challenging, [and] emotionally taxing. But cool."
While the songs were originally recorded decades ago, the project was never completed on account of a truly bizarre spat. Jackson reportedly brought a llama to the recording studio during the sessions with Mercury, something the late singer was less than pleased with. "They got on well," Mercury's manager Jim Beach said in an interview. "Except...

Three years after Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Freddie Mercury in a film about the late Queen lead singer's life, Cohen has dropped the project. According to Deadline.com's Nikki Finke, the issue was a creative one, as Cohen wanted the film to be an R-rated look at Mercury's life and death, while the band -- which has "script and director approval," per Finke -- had hoped for PG feature.
The news is surprising, not just because Cohen has long wanted to play Mercury; in October of last year, Queen guitarist Brian May posted an update about the film on his website and sounded excited about its progress.
Ah … I promised news of yesterday's Queen band meeting. Well, it was just Roger and Jim Beach and myself … we are a small cottage industry !! Our main agenda was the Freddie film … which, I'm happy to tell you, is on course.

Remember that Freddie Mercury biopic guys? It looks that’s still in the works and that we’ll finally get our chance to watch Sacha Baron Cohen as legendary Queen frontman…but not yet! Apparently, things are moving forward, but no release date before 2014.
On the other hand, at this moment we know the project should start filming this spring. Guess that’s the good news for today.
Let us first remind you that this movie should center on Queen’s early years and conclude with the band’s Live Aid performance in 1985.
Peter Morgan is behind the initial script while Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson have been hired to do the rewrite.
As you probably remember, we previously had some rumor that Stephen Frears will direct the biopic, but now – it looks that’s not going to happen. Who will come on board as a replacement? We’ll have to wait and see.

Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Freddie Mercury in an untitled movie about the Queen frontman back in September of 2010. Over two years later, it appears the project may finally go before cameras.
Last week, Queen guitarist Brian May posted an update about the film on his website:
Ah … I promised news of yesterday's Queen band meeting. Well, it was just Roger and Jim Beach and myself … we are a small cottage industry !! Our main agenda was the Freddie film … which, I'm happy to tell you, is on course. Much of our discussion was about contractual things … it's pretty complex …. and determining who is responsible for what. The pieces are all falling into place, though we are now on a slightly later schedule - filming is now scheduled to start in the Spring, with Sacha Baron Cohen playing Freddie. The film should be ready for release early in 2014.

One of the more immediate recognitions of perfect casting in recent years, the news of Sacha Baron Cohen tackling the role of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, has excited fans of both talents since the biopic was announced in 2010. Development has stuttered in the interim though, even as the film's producers reinforced the film's active status, but after a confirmation this past summer -- in the form of director Stephen Frears growing close to helming the project -- a new tidbit from Queen guitarist Brian May himself has reignited the discussion even further. Following Queen's early years as a band through to their 1985 Live Aid performance, the biopic has had the major resource of May taking an intimately involved position within its development, and now a recent meeting with fellow member Roger Taylor and manager Jim Beach has left him with quite the optimistic tone. “Our main agenda was the Freddie film which,...

The magnetic Queen singer is still attracting fans, 21 years after his death – yet he was remarkably hard to fathom. Can a BBC documentary, and a Hollywood film starring Sacha Baron Cohen, cast any new light on the man behind the legend?
In November 1991, days before he died, Freddie Mercury met his manager to discuss how best to reveal to the world that he had Aids. Once they had agreed the wording of an announcement, the 45-year-old singer began to wonder how he would be remembered. "You can do what you want with my music," he said, "but don't make me boring."
He got his wish. Twenty-one years later, Mercury is still the rock star's rock star, exerting enough magnetism to reel in new fans who are too young to remember him firsthand. There is a Hollywood biopic starring Sacha Baron Cohen in the works, and next month a new BBC documentary,...

Last September, it was reported that Sacha Baron Cohen was attached to play Freddie Mercury in an upcoming bio-pic to be written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon). Gk Films is partnering with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Productions and Queen manager Jim Beach on the film’s production, and it’s due to begin shooting next year.
Well now the screenwriter has revealed some more details about the film, stating that it will focus on Mercury’s life, from the early days of Queen to the band’s legendary performance at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid in 1985. However Morgan also went on to say that the movie would not examine Mercury’s final years and his AIDS-related death in 1991.
“I didn’t want to write an AIDS movie, to be honest with you,” Morgan told Cinema Blend. “I just looked at the period– It’s sort of...

A movie chronicling the rise of Queen frontman and singer Freddie Mercury is in development and has Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) attached to play the glam British rocker. The screenplay is being written by Peter Morgan, the same fellow that, ironically enough, wrote the screenplay for The Queen. Morgan's Mercury biopic doesn't as yet have a title.
The project has the blessing of the three surviving members of Queen, John Deacon, Roger Taylor and Brian May. May and Taylor will contribute to the film by supervising the musical choices for the movie which will include songs from both Queen as well as the solo music that Freddie Mercury performed on his own.
Producing the movie is Graham King (The Departed) along with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal through their Tribeca Productions. Queen manager Jim Beach will also be a producer on the movie.
